@@SpammytheHedgehog I do understand why Katniss breaking her promise hurt Johanna, Katniss had a good reason to break the promise. Johanna was the most tragic in my opinion. But I do believe that Annie should have been more tragic than Peeta because he had his wife and Annie did not have Finnick.
@@SpammytheHedgehog yup. As much as I was glad that Katniss offed Coin instead, because that woman was just as bad as (if not worse in some ways than) Snow, I can see it from Joanna's perspective and that must've "cut deep".
I think people underestimate just how tragic Annie's ending was, she was left mentally deranged and a single mother with the responsibility of raising a kid while suffering through PTSD and insanity without any support system. Finnick and Mags were the only support she had, and Finnick was the only one who can calm her down when she gets an episode and they're both gone.
I'd like to believe that Katniss' mom and Annie eventually became friends while in District 13. This friendship will then blossom into a kind of mother and daughter relationship and Katniss' mother looking and guiding Annie through motherhood. As even though she became broken after the death of Katniss'father and losing Prim, guiding Annie will be her chance to have a daughter and correcting her wrongs on Katniss and Prim.
Finnicks death has the same symbolic meaning as Fred Wesely's death. The unfairness of life and war. The passage in MJ when he dies, and Katniss feels like she can see his life flash before his eyes, sailing on a boat, Beetees tridant, Mags smiling and laughing, Annie in her wedding dress, etc, it's so profoundly personal and it's almost like as a reader, you feel like you're invading someone's happiest personal memories. Katniss and Finnicks friendship was so beautifully crafted, especially in MJ when they comforted each other while Peeta and Annie were in the Capitol. I wish we could have seen more of Finnick and Annie in the books and the movies honestly. They're such a beautiful couple. I'll never get over his death either.
To quote Haymitch-“there are no winners-there are survivors “. The brilliance of Suzanne Collins writing is how she could make us feel such sympathy for so many characters.
I truly think people underestimate the pain and tragedy of Johanna's life because of the way she reacts to it. She seems so strong because of her, what else have I got to lose attitude, but really her story is a really tragic one where the beginning, middle and end were just terrible.
She had to go through all that and keep living as an addict afterward. Other people had similar things happen and either they died or they had other traumatized people to be in community with
You know who had it bad? Prim. Prim was only seven (?) when she her dad died. She watched her sister starve and her mother go into shock. She got reaped for the hunger games and instead had her sister take her place. She had to spend the entire hunger games watching her sister nearly die on tv multiple times. When her sister was forced back into the arena again, Prim had to watch a Katniss blow up the arena. She had her home bombed. She watched her sister deal with Peeta. Hell, Prim was the one who talked to help Peeta. Prim was sent into battle a year to young and was blown up on the field. This girl had it tough.
I think an extra tragedy is that Peeta's whole family was killed in the district 12 bombing: both his parents and siblings. Outside of Katniss and Haymich, he had no one. I'd say maybe Haymich and Peeta are toe to toe, but they're both over Finnick for me; Haymich due to how long he suffered and Peeta over how brutally he did so
I feel every tribute from District 4 had a tragic past connected to them. Annie Cresta went mad after seeing beheading survived because of her swimming skills that district 4 was good at due to water filling in the arena. Her mother was just free meat and she had no chance. Finnick was the youngest to win at 14 but was pushed into sex slavery but killed by lizard mutation in 2nd Rebellion
Finnick was beheaded by the lizard mutts, that's why Katniss used the Holo to blow up the sewers, so that Annie didn't have nightmares about Finnick being beheaded
Sad thing is people only focus on the tragedies of finnick or annie. Mags as well had troubling background before her death. She was the first victor during the 11th hunger games. She was the first victor that was made to go on the victory tour which kept her away from her family and home. She was made to live in the victors village after she won and when the tour ended. After all that when she got older she did at least have some happiness and married but when the 75th hunger games came around she knew she needed to save annie and despite being married or possibly having children/grandchildren (this is left unclear in the movie/books) she volunteers herself for the games knowing at 80 years old she has the least amount of chance at surviving. The poor woman couldn't even really speak. She is described as having a medical condition that makes it difficult to her (katniss believes it was some kind of stroke). So mags is left to having to speech with hand gestures after that happened. I dont believe she had the most tragic story but she definitely shouldnt be left out of the conversations when speaking about people involved in the games. Also the 11th hunger games which Mags was the winner of is just one year after the 10th hunger games where snow apparently started to get into things. (The 10th hunger games was wiped from achieves so imagine how crazy it couldve been going into the 11th. Especially if someone stepped out or line etc.)
@@michellemahar9030apparently the writer, Suzanne Collins, said that After ten years She Is having regrets about killing Finnick because She never imagined how loved he would become
I think with how her character is, she would probably end up alone for many, many years. She’s the kind of person that loves deeply but doesn’t open up easily, I think Katniss was the first time in years she started having someone there for her, only for her to feel that she betrayed her. It would be very hard for to open up again.
I do too, it's too awful to think she really had no one for the rest of her life and just suffered with agonizing PTSD until she died, unable to even bath herself. I like to think maybe she found comfort in an animal, maybe a dog, or a cat. I don't think Katniss and Peeta would have left her without at least trying to make contact. I know there was a huge divide between them after Johanna voted yes for the Capitol Hunger Games, but I don't think they would have abandoned her completely knowing everything she's been through. Especially Peeta, given that they had a joining rooms in the Capitol. Although, now that I think about it maybe seeing Johanna would have sent Peeta into one of his flashbacks for that same reason, part of his torture was hearing Johanna tortured.
Same here. I also want to believe that she was able to eventually learn why Katniss killed Coin instead of Snow and realize that she didn't betray her after all. :) :(
5: Annie Alive but PTSD and Finnick died. 4: Peeta Always feeling neglected, playing games for years, lost his leg, brainwashed but survived and ended up with Katniss. 3: Haymitch PTSD, depression, alcoholic but managed to stay alive and have a bit of redemption and happyness after a long life of struggles. 2: Finnick Forced into prostitution and died at the Rebellion War. Sad ending! 1: Johanna Ended up totally alone, terrible PTSD, her heart full of hatred and feeling betrayed by everyone.
@@hehhehhehheh-wn7zz I honestly don’t think so. These books are tragic and there aren’t a lot of happy endings. I think Susanne writing that she voted yes during the last movie, solidified where she would end up afterwards. Alone and still bitter.
I think Annie should move up the list because her and finnick had finally gotten married and she was pregnant and finnick just died leaving her alone with a child. that’s very sad
In some ways, though, I might say Katniss and Prim's mother. She watched her best friend die in the second quarter quell. She got married to the man she loved and had two beautiful daughters, just to have her husband blown up in the mines. She went into extreme depression while Katniss and Prim struggled around her. She picked up again once Katniss learned to hunt, and was doing alright with her apothecary business before Prim was reaped and Katniss took her place. She had to watch her daughter nearly die dozens of times on live television, and deal with her coming home supposedly in love with Peeta. Then the whole thing repeated all over again with the third quarter quell, where she also had to deal with Katniss supposedly going to certain death while pregnant. Then her home got blown up, and she had to evacuate to District 13 with what was left of the District 12 population. She watched Katniss struggle with PTSD and saw her in and out of the hospital countless times. Then Katniss went to the Capitol, and was declared dead. Prim got permission to go to the capitol as well, before she was murdered indirectly by Gale. Not much happened to her personally, but she had to watch helplessly as her husband and daughter were killed while her other daughter suffered through extremely traumatic situations over and over again.
@@nini2488 I meannn unless Katniss told her it was a lie in mockingjay or something (Im reading catching fire rn) She coudlve believed that maybe it was real and Katniss just didn't have a chance to tell her
I prefer Gale and I do not think it should be said even that Prim was indirectly murdered by him. He may have invented the bomb that killed her but, judging on evidence from the books, I do not think that he would ever have done that and had no control over Coins decision
@@mariegetz2385I mean even in the books he knew it was his bomb and knew katniss would be mad at him forever for that, that’s why he didn’t visit her at the end of mockingjay
Peeta is so much more tragic than I thought, wow. I do have to agree that Johanna is the most tragic though, as she goes through so many trials in her life to never really see a brighter side or a happy moment. It is also especially tragic to see the toll it has taken on her mental health and her personality, similar to how we see with Haymitch but a lot more dramatic I think. Haymitch turns to alcoholism, but through that he finds some sort of comfort and identity. I don’t feel like Johanna ever really gets that comfort, even when on the morphling, and she never is able to find a real sense of identity either as it has been stripped from her over and over again… The Hunger Games is literally peak literature and no one can tell me different lmao
@@CalebCarmichael14 right? like he also was the last of his entire bloodline also the fact that sure he ended up with Katniss in the end, but he didn’t actually fully recover his memories with her. had some strong ones maybe, but not tangibly remember the 3rd quarter quell he just had the memories of what he got from watching it, meaning the one time Katniss did have real love for him in the games, those are the ones he had to just see to believe rather than have that real memory, meaning he restarted his life with her more from regrowing a love for who she is rather than who he was. I think that’s hard.
and just to add on, his whole “real or not real” game he would play trying to figure out what was real in life. he always has to second guess what was a memory or what was implanted in his brain to think, so living in constant paranoia should put him higher
people ignore Katniss's trauma, that poor girl had to lead an entire rebellion at 16 whilst dealing with extreme PTSD from two hunger games. then she lost the person that she did all of this for, Katniss literally goes mute at the end of the mockingjay from trauma (also she was seriously burned when the bombs that killed prim went off), she had to watch Peeta be help by the capitol and being tortured while knowing that the only reason he wasn't put out of his misery yet was because of her. that girl was so strong bro
I think that now after having read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, I think Snow wanted to punish District 12 and it's Victor's as much as possible. Especially people from the Seam. It wasn't even just that Haymitch outsmarted the gamemakers, Snow just wanted him to suffer.
@@diabolicallink Thank you :) I hadn't either until recently. It makes a lot of sense, since Lucy Grey was from the Seam. He probably wanted to punish all of District 12 for what happened between them, which is why he starved them the worst, forcing younger children to get tessere and chosen at the Reaping each year. What Snow has never been able to catch onto is that it's the people who suffer the most (the people from the Seam) that have the strongest will to live and the most refined survival skills. This is shown by how little survival skills the Career tributes have in the games. They have never had to starve like the people from District 12. That's why Lucy, Haymitch, and Katniss were able to survive the games. Pure survival instincts. The more you beat people down, the easier they are to control, at least that's what Snow believes. The people of the Capitol gave their political power over to Snow in exchange for the ultimate entertainment, the games. Panem et Circenses, Bread and circus; a diet of entertainment or political policies on which the masses are fed to keep them happy and docile. This provides Snow with the ultimate death grip on the nation because at any moment, the food and entertainment can stop flowing and he would let his people starve if it meant holding onto power. Lucy Grey, Haymitch and Katniss all broke the illusion Snow had tried to create of this dystopian world, proving how fragile the system is. "It must be fragile system if it can be brought down by just a few berries." Three Victor's in the last 75 years all from the Seam, outsmarted the gamemakers and made the Capitol look bad, creating "chinks" in the armor.
When I read the books I did feel like Katniss loved Peeta before she went into the arena the 2nd time. She was very conflicted between Gale and Peeta. And I think she didn't even understand her own feelings.
Agreed, I'm not sure when Katniss fell in LOVE with Peeta, but she definitely loved him after the first games. i think she fell in love with Peeta during the victory tour maybe? Idk. I don't think Katniss ever loved Gale, she just thought she did, since she was expected too. When she was in district 13 she was a scared, tired, angsty teen suffering from extreme ptsd and just needed human closeness
I always read Katniss as far more concerned with survival than interested in love. She didn't want to fall in love in the kind of world they grew up in. Gale was a close friend that she could no longer relate to after the games, so they grew apart. Gale was never a serious love interest. And Peeta was probably not someone she would have fallen in love with if it weren't for the mutual trauma. Tbh I see their entire love arc as extremely tragic.
They were young kids with so many large emotions. It is understandable she was confused and conflicted. I ever thought she was purposely messing with peta outside of what the were forced to.
@elizabetharnold1714 I totally agree. Katniss was 16. At 16, does anyone truly grasp what true romantic love is? Also being pushed into a narrative about loving someone and struggling with life/death/politics. At 16. It's kind of hard to focus on romance when all you're trying to to do is survive. Again at 16
I never really bought her having romantic feelings for Gale. But I think she entertained the idea because she didn’t get a chance to explore that freely, because of the Capital, and as a way to cling to her relationship with Gale. I think that maybe if Gale didn’t have feelings and didn’t act hurt over the Peeta act, she wouldn’t have worried too much about it either
I agree that Johanna has the most tragic life 100%. I also feel that Katniss herself deserves to be on the list too, though she’d end up in last place. She watched her best friend become a product of something she hated, leading to her witnessing the death of her sister, and was consistently used as a form of propaganda for both sides. She had it better than a lot of them, but not by so much. (Not forgetting she was a child of the Seam and lost her father, and arguably her mother, at a very young age)
I did not experience the torture Johanna endured, however I endured and survived my own trauma that has left me with a similar difficulty taking showers and I appreciate how he keeps mentioning it repeatedly. It’s a horrible thing to live with, a terrible fear to have constantly hanging over me (and embarrassment, of course). I probably sympathize the most with Johanna and I wish the movies had done a better job of telling her story.
I think Annie had the hardest life, she saw her partner get decapitated in the games, went insane, then had to see the only person that understood her and cared for her have to go back into the games against other victors who had just as big as a chance to win, then had a chance at happiness when she got married and got pregnant but then her husband died, the only person that mattered to her and only one that cared. She was alone with a baby and didn’t know how to cope.
Yeah and she also lost mags who was like a mother figure to her 😔and they don’t mention her family in the books so I’m assuming she never had one or snow killed them as well
When you realize that Annie had to deal with Finnicks death more than once as she thought he died when the peacekeepers bombed that building. And than she found out that he was still alive which gave her hope. And than she had to deal with it all over again. Off!!😰
She would've found out after the fact, if they told her at all. They had no way to communicate with anyone to let them know they weren't dead after the house bombing, nor would they have wanted to even if they could, since everyone thinking they were dead was to their advantage.
Johanna was definitely the most tragic, though I do think that her ending could’ve been better if she just tried to understand why Katniss broke her promise, and try to appreciate that Snow was still killed shortly after. That friendship didn’t have to end.
@@tammygant4216 I've been wondering the same thing. I think that's an assumption Morgan makes that everyone is accepting & rolling with it. I don't think we know how she responded. But I don't think it's super off base to guess she felt betrayed even if it only a guess.
I haven’t watched this yet but I’m gonna have to say Haymitch after hearing the list. He went into the quell with twice as many tributes and outlasted them all, almost dying himself. But his hands weren’t clean. At least Annie won by swimming and all that happened to her, was actually to others around her. She didn’t have to take a life. He had two weeks of peace before everyone he loved was killed. And then his whole life was spent going back to that place. Year after year. He may of had a somewhat happy ending but it took a couple of decades to get it. While tragedy struck the others hard, they were young with many years to live out in peace. Except Joanna… I rank her up there almost with Haymitch. Considering everything that happened to her and her loved ones but she too had the rest of her life in front of her to find peace (I hope she did).
He she didn’t, haymitch at least had people he was close with, Joanna had literally nobody except for Katniss but she felt betrayed by Katniss because she broke the promise that he made to kill snow, the one person Joanna hated the most because he was the one who caused all of her pain and suffering and never got the chance to clear up with Katniss after that, she couldn’t even clean herself due to her ptsd while also being addicted to pain meds with having no help, truly one of the most depressing stories I’ve ever heard about a fictional character
@@youwereprettylasttimeisawy1227 she didn’t break her promise , the people still killed snow , when she killed the lady instead , it was the right thing to do
@@Destiny-ze2gz Not saying it wasn't. But Katniss made a promise that SHE would finish him off, that at least if she couldn't be the one to do it personally at least snow would see the fire, the anger, the hatred in Katniss eyes from Johanna. At least Johanna could feel like she was also the one killing him by Katniss.
@You were pretty last time I saw you haymitch has gone through the games, one of the worst versions because the quarter quell is so much more than a regular hunger games. More tributes, bigger arena, higher chances of getting killed. He watches everyone die in the quell, okay. He finishes last and gets out, only to be bombarded with "congratulations!" and ptsd from a bunch of silly capitol idiots who don't know better. Then he develops serious alcoholism and tries to cope by making friends with the other victors. Over the years he has to watch children as young as 12 get killed from his district every year. Finally, he mentors katniss and peeta, etc, etc, and has to go through another quarter quell where the VICTORS are reaped this time, and faced with the bullshit of that decision. The kids he thought were safe? Going back in. The friends he's made over the years? Going back in. And most of them didn't come back out. Imagine that. Just years and years of torture Addiction? Check. Depression? Check. A line Johanna says is "they can't hurt me. Everyone I love is already dead." Haymitch had people. And literally watched them all get murdered on screen. I think that does a number on your mental health. And I think he has a much deeper hatred for Snow than Johanna could possibly imagine
@@бронза.вафля.конус they all went through games and had people they were close to. Johanna lost mags and finnick too. Haymitch managed to move past some of his previous trauma, Johanna did not....plus she also had to mentor each year as the o ly female Victor from seven.
I think something else you should have considered with Peeta, was his life before the games. Every single person on that list, besides Peeta, had loved ones. Even Haymitch and Joanna, who lost their loved ones, at least HAD loved ones growing up. Peeta did not. He was abused his ENTIRE life. By his mom and the capital. But never lost that kindness that made Katniss fell in love with him, unlike Joanna and Haymitch, who became bitter.
Ye and he had to watch Katniss take prim’s place to protect her while his siblings did not.I definitely would not have looked at my siblings the same, tho not really their fault.
I personally think that Peeta is No. 2. Yes, he gets a happy ending, and he's suffering isn't as long as some of the others, but even at the end of the series he still gets flashes where he needs to hold onto a chair so he wouldn't kill the woman he loves. Plus, his tournament in the Capital was more concentrated than for anyone else, especially once they started the hijacking process on him. They managed to squeeze years of torment into just a couple of months.
I always find the relationship between Katniss and Haymitch so interesting. They both were quite combative to each other, and Peeta is the one to point out that this is because how alike they are. Peeta is easy to mentor, but Katniss is very much like Haymitch, with regards to his reluctance to accept help; and wanting to rely on their own instincts. Also Katniss hates the idea of having to perform for the capitol like she’s at a dog show; however Peeta sees the value in impressing the capitol citizens. It’s so great seeing the relationship build between Katniss and Haymitch. I think Haymitch does view Peeta and Katniss as his surrogate children. Katniss does not see Haymitch as a father figure but she definitely appreciates everything he’s done for them; and values him as a friend.
I think Finnick is a fan favorite which is why his death hurts so many (me included) but Johanna really had it worst. After winning she ended up being alone and after the rebellion, she was still alone and now with PTSD.
I would have voted Joanna in the poll (had I seen it) and I voted her before the video started. She was one of my "favorite" tragic characters from the books and the actress did an excellent job of bringing her character to life on the big screen. After everything she went through I had hoped for at least a not-so-tragic ending for her but unfortunately that didn't happen. Definitely agree with the ranking and the reasons for each of them, you were very thorough and I don't blame you for continuing to bring up the fact that Joanna couldn't even bathe herself, that's not a mindset I would wish even on my worst enemies. Great video, Morgan, stay awesome!
I am unable to choose who had it worse. All of them suffered their own tragedy and it would be cruel to say one persons sufferring is not as bad as anothers. These books had me in tears many times, something that is hard to do normally. The worst part for me is after Prim died and Katniss returned home. Hearing the cat was just to much for her.
When I voted in the poll, I voted Finnick due to not only being prostituted, but also the note you mentioned in your character video of him about how he never saw himself as a good person. He probably wasn't (Not many people in Hunger Games can be seen as saints) but by loving Annie despite her trauma from the games, he showed some positive traits. That being said, I agree with why your choice for most tragic story belongs to Johanna. I've seen what happens when people go through their lives feeling neglected by world, bitter, and all alone, and that's worse than any hell...
I agree on the list, I only think that Finnick had also ptsd from the time he was used by the Capitol. He had to do things against his wil and to do that he had to close down his emotions and forget who he was and what he wanted. He is used as a thing / toy at that moment and must had got the feeling he was worthless. He also had to pretent he liked what all that women did to him.. And he had to deal with everthing that was said about him what wasn't true..
It's Annie. She went through The Hunger Games which gave her tons of phiscal stress, then, when she won and when came back home she was never in the right mind and the only person who could get her through it, Finnick, she had to watch him being sold. She was chosen for the 75th hunger games, Mags vollentered for her, then she watched Mags give up her life for Finnick and the others which gave her a lot of guilt. When Katniss broke the arena she was taken by peacekepers and tranported to the Capital where she was torchered with Peeta and Joanna. When she was rescued by 13 yes she married Finnick, and then had what, like a week with him before he was sent out on a misson and died. She had to raise her son all alone. Her torcher never ended, she had to be reminded every day that the love of her life passed. She is the most tragic hunger games charecter.
Katniss getting in bed with Peeta was difficult to a degree, but it was more for comfort than anything. Both of them suffered nightmares and ptsd. Having someone hold them as they slept was a sense of security. It is incredibly sweet of Peeta to do that. Peeta and Katniss still cared deeply for one another. They were still very close friends. There is a bond that people have when they face something like the hunger games.
3:01 I always wish that she had wrote in the epilogue that he became a grandfather to their children it’s never said, but it seems that in the book don’t think he really interacted with them too much he still kept himself raising wild geese, maybe even being that last part in the book playing with the girl
I think I would flip Finnick and Haymitch. Only because I can't imagine sending 23 years worth of teenagers to their death. It also appears Haymitch was alone with that pain & guilt till the 74th games when he met Katniss & Peeta. Finnick had 10 years of mentoring, 6 of which would have been spent being gifted out. (which would seem like a lifetime) but at least he had family and Annie, so he didn't have to be completely alone with his pain & guilt. ITA about Johanna though. I think Jena Malone's portrayal makes us forget how truly tragic Johanna is as a character. I'd love to see a sequel book about her and maybe see her get towards some happy ending. Otherwise, you're correct, we're just left to imagine her alone in district 7 with only her anger and PTSD to comfort her.
Love The Hunger Games content keep it up dude respect. To me it was Haimish he survived by using his intelligence but they murdered his familiy just because Snows Pride was hurt so every time he thinks of something smart he is probably reminded of that and he had to train the next "Offerings" just to watch them die again and again.
Glad to see more hunger games content from your channel! You are one of the only youtubers that gives good analysis on this series and clearly love them a lot
I think the last little bit snapped after that. I don’t think she would have trusted anyone else after that. I don’t blame Katniss for killing Coin, but I don’t blame Johanna for hating her for not killing Snow either
I didn’t see katniss as not killing snow as too horrible of a thing to be honest. There’s no way she didn’t know he was gonna be killed one way or another, it just wasn’t her who did it.
@@diabolicallink Oh yeah. Katniss knew Snow was either gonna die from his own doing, or someone else would kill him. But she promised Johanna she would kill him and Katniss was probably one of the last living people Johanna trusted
Oh Johanna is definitely the most tragic. Even after everything, she ended up with no one: no family, no real sign of friends, no children or spouse, no purpose or a job that could provide with such a purpose or even hopes for a brighter future... she started with nothing and ended with nothing. At least Haymitch had his geese and his friends, as good as children or even just a niece and a nephew (and Effie if we go by the movie of course), Katniss and Peeta got each other and their babies, Finnick's painful death had a purpose so he became a hero and Annie had a baby to adore and care for after being one of the few characters with perfectly clean hands who also did not die. Johanna gained nothing from all of this. If only we would have known she found a purpose in her job, or had been able to take in and teach children who loved her, or if she had found a new life in district 12 or any other place where she could have a fresh start, any kind of payoff or reward for herself, she wouldn't be nearly as tragic. Sadly, in real life this happens more often than not. Good deeds don't always get a reward. It goes with the theme that wars are not payless endeavors.
I definitely agree with Johanna being the most tragic. She is the only way to possibly continue the Hunger Games story post Mockingjay, where there could be a plot of her going after Katniss to avenge her betrayal.
I wonder where Morgan heard about Johanna's ending. Sheesh! I always loved her friendship with Katniss so to find out that she was betrayed by Katniss when she actually killed Coin instead of Snow and had to go back home being all alone, betrayed, and insane just really breaks my heart. :( I wish she knew that Katniss in a way did kill Snow because Snow laughed himself to death, lol, but mainly I wish that she had a much happier ending. :(
I recently read the hunger games and love it so I’m really glad your making more videos on it. I also love your Harry Potter videos as it’s one of my favourite series. :)
I hadn't really thought of who's the most tragic character in the hunger games before, but I believe that I agree with your ranking. They all had extremely tragic stories and it's really really hard to tell who's had it worse. But I have to agree with Johanna, I can't even imagine what her life turned out like after the games, no loved ones, no friends, an addiction, severe ptsd. Finnick was her closest friend after Snow killed her loved ones and he got killed. Katniss was the only other person she could consider her friend and that was ruined as well
I have watched the movies and read the books multiple times without the slightest emotion. But this got to me, i could hardly hold back tears after like five minutes
I would possibly switch Haymitch & Finnick only because Finnick's ending and not meeting his son was tragic, but it was on his own accord. He was happy to die for Katiness and a better future whereas Haymitch's desperation for his tributes time and time again, there was little he could do but watch. That's just as psychological.
One thing that was never explained was why Johanna refused Snow when she knew her loved ones would pay the price? Kinda wish the author wrote for Johanna to explain why she did that
I honestly think Cato should’ve been on the list I mean he was so close to winning, he lost his district partner, and in the movie he realized he was just as expendable as the other tributes even though he did everything right by the capitals standards, not to mention his death in the books
Coriolanus Snow also had a tragic life. Although he wasn’t tortured, he was manipulated and had to go through a lot of things in his life. He had to witness a terrible war with his family, who died shortly after as well as his unborn sibling, making him only have his cousin Tigris and his grandmother left. He had to go through starvation and people dying as well as cannibalism and desperation. He had to go to school with Dr Gaul and watch as she tortured his friends, avoxes, and people he didn’t know as a lesson to others who might try to cross her. He had to observe his love, Lucy Gray go through the arena with him being the only person keeping her alive. He had to watch Clemensia being bitten by the snakes and going through the terrifying aftermath of it, and having to lie to everyone about her condition. Then he was brought to the districts thinking it was for the rest of his life instead of a few months and going back to the capitol. Then he mentally tore himself apart thinking about Lucy Gray and going as far as trying to kill her because of his insanity. Later, he broke off his connections to his loved ones and family members by firing his cousin and marrying someone that he despised. Then he had to see Katniss go into the arena having similar qualities as Lucy Gray and singing her songs, which must have either made him incredibly angry, sad, or mentally unwell. He had to see her win and against the Capitol’s will as well as Peeta. He also had to kill many people to gain power throughout his years of participating in the government. On top of that he had to watch as his country fell apart and be publicly killed even though Katniss chose him over Coin. He lived a pretty terrible life.
Yeah, but for most part, he was the one responsible for it. Yes, the beginning of his life was tragic, but he was the one who kept the contact with Gaul while being in District 12, he could've just be with Lucy Gray. You talk as if it bothered him to kill many people to gain power. After getting back from 12, he didn't feel any bit of remorse. Yeah, his life was definitely not easy, but he made hell out of other people's lives.
I personally think Peeta had the most tragic story. He was forced into the games, heartbroken by Katniss, his family was blown to bits, he was brutally tortured and brainwashed and probably has severe PTSD. However, he does have a happy ending.
What about Katniss’s mom? She lost her husband in a tragic accident, lost her daughter in a tragic explosion, and hated by her only surviving family member because of her emotions.
The answer is Katniss of course. She was ultimately thrust into the role of fueling the morale of a rebellion that ends up killing the person she loves the most after the most cruel twist of fate she could possibly imagine threatened that very person, namely Prim. The tragedy of Prim being reaped on her very first reaping is what starts the entire tragedy that is the story of the 3 books together. This singular event devastates Katniss more than anyone and it is a complete act of pure, cosmic misfortune of massive proportions, literally the worst thing she could imagine to happen. In many ways, it's worse than Prim just dropping dead, knowing you'd have to watch her be scared and murdered on live television and your only method of protecting her is to essentially sacrifice your own life to the same torment. Sure, she had no tragic death like some of the other characters, but I'd argue she, for sure, has the most scars after coming out of everything, more than Peeta or Haymitch.
Here’s my ranking 5. Peeta: he got a happy ending 4. Annie: she still has a son which makes it a semi happy ending 3. Haymitch: he had to watch Katniss and peeta be together and he lost his closest loved ones 2. Johanna: she doesn’t have any loved ones and she has terrible ptsd and got tortured 1. Finnick: he had to watch mags die and he had just gotten married to Annie when he was killed by mutts
I think it goes like this: 5) Anne 4)finnick 3)Peeta 2)Haymitch 1) Johanna Honorary mention) Katniss (reason being, her dad dying, going into the games twice, the temporary loss of her lover, her mom being mentally absent, her sister dying right infrount of her, the physical pain.) I know it's not as much as the others but it's just what I think.
Someone who should be on the list, is katniss. Why? (SPOILERS) So. Katniss es dad died at the age of 11(I think) and her mother went... Blank. She had to be the mother of the family hunting for food taking care of prim and her mother. Yes, she had gale but- I mean we all know he a little b anyways she had to buy tseres every year and she had alot of pressure of her being entered as a tribute cause of how many times her name was in the bowl. Then, her sister was called and she had to give up everything so her sister prim wouldn't be entered. Then she found out a boy she really thought was kind and her savior was entered and she knew she would have to kill him or he would kill her. And she also had to trust her mother would take care of prim along with gale which took alot since she wasn't very helpful. Then she knew she was probably gonna die in the games. Then, she was in the games and rue died so she got really traumatised after everything that happened in the games. Yes she had peeta, but some scars never would truly heal. Then she had to watch innocent people die in front of her on the tour and she could do nothing. She knew people looked up to her but she could also do nothing for them. Then she found out she had to face the games afgain, which would be horrible since she thought she would never face them ever again. Next she had to watch more people die that became her allies. And when she found out they didn't save peeta, she was honestly ather breaking point. And everything else happened...losing prim, realizing she was on the wrong side and all that...yes she had. happy ending, but some things aren't meant to heal.
5. Annie. She suffered extreme mental illness after the games but still ended up with a son and had Finnick when he was alive. 4. Finnick. He suffered forced prostitution and threat on his family and faced an extremely painful and agonising death, but still while he was alive he had years with the love of his life. 3. Haymitch. He faced dreadful alcoholism and PTSD after the games and watched all the tributes that he trained in the arena die. Lost his whole family but ended healthily and most likely happily. 2. Johanna. She faced traumatic torturing from the capitol and the fear of water. She ended her life alone but she was such a strong woman and still survived everything. 1. Peeta. He faced horrendous and regular beating from his mother throughout his childhood. Was neglected for years, was used by Katniss and the capitol and then captured and tortured terribly by the capitol. His whole family was killed and he faced 2 hunger games. He went on missions that made His life a living hell and lost a leg. Even though he got the happy ending that he deserved, nothing makes up for his tragic life - he will never be the same again.
i also think katness was so tragic she didnt mean to start the rebbelion she only vollentered for her sister who still at the the end ended up dying anyways.
I love your Harry Potter and Hunger Games break down videos and was wondering if you would ever do a Divergent one or Maze Runner? I’ve never read either of the books and the movies never interested me but the way you film these videos I would LOVE your take on either.
Honestly Katniss was also one of the most tragic characters🥲had a horrible childhood in poverty, her father dying, her mother depressed, she had to take so much responsibility at a young age. Than she tried everything to lower the chance of prim being choosen & it still happened. Than all the stuff in the arena, her entire district burned, her sister after everythingdying by the one friend she trusted back home, ptsd from the games - she was in SO many & carried all the revolution & "living a symbol" on her shoulders. So much guilt for all the people that died in her name, the district, the bombs...Really hard life but at least she got a good ending🥲 She definetly had ptsd tho too
finnick’s death was so unfair. he did so much to keep everyone safe down there only to get left behind. it feels like no one even tried to help him up. it was frustrating watching katnis just stare at him. idk, it mightve been the right thing to do but it was still so frustrating.
Also, with Finnick, he was NEVER listened to or thanked for everything he did for Katniss or the rebellion. He just sacrificed himself over and over and got nothing in return
Where Haymitch and Peeta are ranked can be debated. However, I thought this was a fair ranking of tragic endings. Johanna's tragic ending was worse than death, in my opinion.
I almost cried for Johanna when I heard this. If I was in the Hunger Games, I would make it my first job to befriend her and try to help her as much as I can. The others are still very tragic though, I read the books before before I watched the movies and I started crying at Finnick’s death in the books. When I watched Mockingjay, the whole time I was dreading Finnick’s death, it was worse than I thought.😭 Poor Johanna though.😭😢😭😢😭😢
People who only watched the movies probably didn't realize everything that Johanna had gone through. Also, some people might not have voted for her as most tragic because she gave off such negative vibes in the movies.
In my opinion,i think the most tragic character would be the first ever person who played in the hunger games they had no mentor they had no one to go to for help so lets say there more than died for the time being but for a character shown in the movies/books its definitely Johanna she just cant go in water has no loved ones left its tragic .
Johanna's my number one too, she experienced both extreme physical and extreme emotional pain and there wasn't anything happy about her ending. I get sad whenever I think of her and I'm shocked she didn't win the poll. Finnick and Peeta had their most loved ones alive, Haymitch had Peeta and Katniss and he wasn't tortured, as awful as their lives were, I'm still very secure in my choice
Peeta’ sliced ones weren’t alive dude. U can consider Katniss and Haymitch as his loved ones but u can’t forget that Peeta’s family, his own flesh and blood were killed by snow in the district 12 bombing.
I know the hunger games in both movies and books was Katniss’ story and mostly POV, and we did see bits of how messed up and traumatised others were especially after being tortured, but I wish in the movies they showed a tad more on how Annie and Johanna were effected. Even now, apart from Finnick saying Annie asks questions to maintain reality, I dunno what the Capitol did to her or how she cooed after, especially then needing to look after a baby. Peter was horribly tortured and we see what added fear stimuli and brainwashing did to him, he’d also need to be grounded in reality for the rest of his life. Johanna was only showed to be have been tortured via her shaved head and addiction to morphlin, no couple of lines on how she was specifically tortured with water, and in the table scene in the last movie where they vote on another hunger games, Johanna is there looking clean and glamorous. Again, she isn’t the focus, but they downplayed her trauma because she seems so strong I guess..?
In the books they say "...because of his youth, they couldn't touch him for a year or two..." when introducing finnicks character. So, unfortunately, finnick was only 15 or 16 when snow started to traffic him
Honestly, if there was some kind of sequel or spin-off from Johanna's perspective, I'd be down for that. The end of Mockingjay obviously left Panem in a much better state, but such dramatic changes in the world are never clean and a lot of dark stuff can still happen in the shadows. Combine that with Johanna having no mention at all after the meeting of the victors, thus no real resolution as a character, it'd be great to get a story of her, starting with Snow's execution and going from there. I can buy that she'd be angry with Katniss short-term for not killing Snow, but A) Snow was gonna die then and there no matter what, so saying Katniss betrayed her is a bit dramatic, and B) I think Johanna's smart enough to put two and two together and recognize just as Katniss did that Coin would just be Snow 2.0. She may even realize that Coin was responsible for Prim's death, thus would definitely be able to relate to that burning need for revenge that Katniss took. So a life-long grudge and sense of betrayal seems excessive. That said, no doubt, Johanna is running almost entirely on rage, so with Snow finally gone, a good story would involve seeing Johanna finally put that rage to rest and move forward.
I would say that Peeta had it worse than Haymitch because Peeta's whole family died as well. Depression doesn't beat mental and physical abuse, and having a lost leg. But, Haymitch did also get a happy ending, but with no loved relatives. My ranking would be: 5. Annie 4. Haymitch 3. Peeta 2. Finnick and 1. Johanna.
i think peetah also went through bad torture other than the crackerjacker venom, he had lots of blood removed and got beat up regularly you saw all the scars and bruises on his face and when they went to rescue him you could see all of the torture weapons, i ultimately think that he deserves the most tragic
I agree with your ranking. Everything you said about each one, their years of happiness (if the had some), the torture they were put through, and the aftermath.. I end up coming with the same conclusion!
1 Finnick, he spent the entirety of his time with Annie also forced to protect her from prostitution, and died immediately after his life was worth living. 2 Johanna, where there is life, there is hope, she can find happiness, even if only in our minds. Finnick's story is over. 3 Peeta, he never broke his brainwashing, always doubting reality. 4 Haymitch, he recovered from his alcoholism and ended in a better enough place to find happiness free from the type of trauma peeta and Johanna went through 5 Annie, if Finnick had lived, her story would not have been that tragic, her tragedy is magnified by the loss of her support and protector.
This is a very interesting video. I think tragedy is such a difficult thing to quantify, but Johanna probably was at the top for going through everything she did and never really having any semblance of happiness at any time, whereas all of the others did have it at some point, fleeting as it may have been.
I kinda wish Jhoana could have a little spinoff story so she could fight off and finally surpass her fear of water and then forgiving KATNISS hope the writer does that
I just had this convo w my partner the other day! We said the same about Joanna, she had the most "glory" in her games but the absolute worst after her game. She deserved better!
from least to most tragic: Peeta, Annie, Finnick, Johanna then Haymitch. Peeta got a happy ending with Katniss and had two children. He worked through his trauma thanks to Katniss. I really don't think she used him as much as people thought. Yes, she did what she did to survive but in the process she got to know Peeta better after she went to the river to find him after Rue died. She risked her life to go get Peeta the medicine he needed at the cornucopia. If she was just using him would she have cared what happened to him? Peeta brought out Katniss' better nature. They comforted each other after their first Hunger Games. Johanna and Haymitch are tied when it comes to losing their family because of Snow, but I think Haymitch was punished because he used the weakness of the force field against his last opponent was just petty. In the arena you use the resources you have and that's what Haymitch did. Johanna's loss was tragic. She lost her family because she didn't want to be prostituted by Snow then years later she had to go back into the arena and face new horrors only to be captured by the Capital after Katniss blew the force field. Johanna was tortured probably a lot worse than the others because Snow knew she hated him for killing her family. She had every reason to join the rebellion against him. I really don't think Johanna should have blamed Katniss for killing Coin instead of Snow. Snow was already close to death. Coin was just Snow 2.0 and if Coin had no qualms about sending Peeta to the Capital to kill Katniss then she would have had no qualms about tossing Johanna into another arena if Johanna was a liability to her. Johanna chose to go to her home district and live out the rest of her life bitter and alone. She had choices once Snow and Coin were dead, but she chose a solitary life. Heck she could have ended up with Haymitch (lol). Johanna chose holding a grudge against Katniss to actually getting some peace. Every time I watch the movies I cannot watch Finnick getting attacked by the mutts. I really wish he had made it out. I actually wished he didn't join up with Katniss and the others in the Capital to fight. He would have been able to help Peeta in District 13 and hopefully keep Coin from using Peeta as a weapon against Katniss. I didn't want Annie to lose him, but he lives on in their son and that's why Annie's story is less tragic.
I've noticed I never see anyone mention that the most tragic thing about Peetas story is how different he is after the torture. He never really returns. He basically died in the capital & someone else returned. Even after the therapy. He still wasn't the same.
I completely agree with your ranking. It makes sense after pointing out everything that each character went through. I love Johanna and i felt so bad for her after reading the books.
Finnick could have been placed higher, he didn’t die except at the end and went through torture watching Annie in the arena and her having PTSD from it and them both having to deal with it. Then he went through more torture being a mentor.
Haymitch-made the Capitol look foolish when he won the 50th Hunger Games, and Snow killed his family as punishment that left him with terrible PTSD. Was alone in depression for a long time before he became Katniss and Peeta's mentor. Annie Cresta- Was scarred for life when her friend was beheaded during the Games. Was also forced to watch Finnick in the games. Found love with Finnick, but was left to raise a baby on her own after the father of her child's death. Johanna Mason-Was forced into prostitution by Snow after tricking tributes that she was weak in the Games. Family was murdered when she refused prostitution. Was locked up and tortured after arena in the 75th Games was destroyed. Went through terrible withdrawal in District 13. Heartbroken when she learned about Finnick's death. Felt betrayed by Katniss when she killed Coin instead of Snow as promised. Moved back to home district with nobody close to her with much hatred in her heart, an addiction to pain medicine, and couldn't even bathe herself from a crippling fear of water. Ended up like Haymitch in the aftermath of the Games, and the worst case of PTSD in the series. Finnick-Was exploited and had to deal with dull Capitol citizens drooling over him as the youngest tribute in the Games. Snow forcibly sold his body to Capitol residents, and threatened to kill his family when he refused. Knew the secret to Snow's poison. Got the reputation as a womanizer known to the Capitol or District citizens. Was agonized for Annie Creta's safety in the Games. Was guilty when forced to watch his mother figure die in the 75th Games to save him. Was broken when Annie was captured tortured in the Capitol before her rescue to District 13. Suffered and died one of the most brutal deaths in Mockingjay Part 2. Never got to live to see the birth of his and Annie's child. Found love before his death, however. Peeta-Grew up with a physically abusive mother. Lived through the horrors of the 74th Games along with Katniss. Lost a limb that was replaced with prosthetic in his first Games. Thought Katniss loved him back after came out of the 74th Games together. Got heartbroken on the train ride home. Incredibly hard for him whenever Katniss was with Gale. Even more painful when he had to keep love charade going in Catching Fire. Was used by Katniss whenever she became upset, giving himself a sense of false hope. Was taken and brainwashed by the Capitol when Katniss finally fell in love with him in the 75th Games. Fought through the brainwashing when the Capitol tried to bomb District 13 in Mockingjay Part 1. Capitol used tracker jacker venom on him in an attempt to kill Katniss when rescued to District 13. Went through a battle of his mind at the end of Mockingjay Part 1. Used by Coin for a mission he was not ready for in the beginning of Mockingjay Part 2. Suffered the lowest of lows when believed he had to die when realized what he done while brainwashed. Katniss' love for him eventually got him out of his brainwashing. Heart sank after Katniss was about to kill herself after Coin. Continued his love story with Katniss in the aftermath of the Games.
To say that Haymitch had to dit on the sidelines watching Katniss & Peeta grow their family is premature. He & Effie became closer ( which the film itself took one step further by hinting a possible romance). The story never concluded Haymitch regressing back to being a loner as he did have many friends in 12. Haymitch also got his closure to all the failed tributes he mentored by immortalizing them in the pages of the Everdeens plant guide. The only thing that gives him leverage in this poll is that he is the oldest tribute of the bunch. It's very likely Haymitch would be chosen as a Godfather to Katniss ' children and by further extension Effie a Godmother, giving strength to the films nod toward a romance between the two. Plus coming out of addiction and depression is liberating in so many ways. Whomever Haymitch was before he was chosen for the games would resurface and he would reconnect with those traits to the best his body and age would allow, he was after all according to Katniss, a bit of a looker who could have had his pick from the ladies of 12. Peeta will always have the legacy of having to ask Katniss of the memories he struggled with , not knowing what was real and what not, plus he lost his family in the bombing of 12, and we aren't entirely sure if the bakers son continued baking or painting after the war. He's one of the few characters who didn't have a sure set purpose apart from later becoming a father. In all honesty nobody ever really had any further absolution after the war, nor a driving purpose. Even Katniss' mother went on to become a Dr in another district, thecsame for Gale who wound up in some military endeavor in district 2. The story never says Johanna felt betrayed by Katniss because in the end she did get what she wanted...Snows death. It wouldn't have mattered if it were by Katniss' arrow or not. Not all promises can be kept, and metaphorically Katniss basically killed Snow 2.0 when she shot Coyne who ultimately sought to continue the legacy of the hunger games instead of putting an end to them the moment she appointed herself the new leader of panem
Every single one of these characters suffered traumas unimaginable and un-understandable unless you've been through the same kinds of hells yourself. Think we can all agree on that. That is one thing I love about Suzanne Collins´writing; no sugar coating or romanticizing things. Also, I want to add that I think Katniss´ mom moved with Annie to District 4 after the war to work in a hospital there, with District 12 being too painful to revisit after having lost both her husband and Prim. While Katniss always saw her mother as weak, depressed and neglectful, she WAS a great medical healer, and did successfully raise 2 children, being prematurely widowed, and while enduring a major depression so bad that she wasn't able to care for her children for some time. As we know, Katniss never forgives her for this, understandably. After Katniss comes home with the bread from Peeta, she starts to come back to herself and semi-function again for her daughters. If anyone knows anything about the hell of grieving your too-soon-lost-husband, while raising your child(ren) as a single mother, it would be her. And as Katniss´ mom, and a former resident in Victors Village, she would have some knowledge on how the Hunger Games can affect the victors from day to day. So Annie is not totally alone. Hopefully.
I agree with the ranking! I will say though, I would add to Peeta's tragedy: Losing his whole family in the bombing of twelve. I still do think Haymitch had to endure tragedy for longer, but that element makes it that much harder to compare the two!
I agree with your ranking! For another video idea, have you ever heard of the tales of the hunger games? It is created by another TH-camr, who created videos for every single hunger games as well imagined more hunger games after the 75th games. I think he has over 100 hunger games created, and it really expands the universe!
In my opinion, Johanna was the most tragic. She was tortured, lost her loved ones, betrayed and left the world alone.
Yep. And Katniss broke her promise to kill Snow for her.
Plus she now has ptsd from water which is horrible
I don't think anyone disagrees with you
I think people underestimate just how tragic Annie's ending was, she was left mentally deranged and a single mother with the responsibility of raising a kid while suffering through PTSD and insanity without any support system. Finnick and Mags were the only support she had, and Finnick was the only one who can calm her down when she gets an episode and they're both gone.
I just realised she lost both of them 😭 that’s literally so sad…
I'd like to believe that Katniss' mom and Annie eventually became friends while in District 13. This friendship will then blossom into a kind of mother and daughter relationship and Katniss' mother looking and guiding Annie through motherhood. As even though she became broken after the death of Katniss'father and losing Prim, guiding Annie will be her chance to have a daughter and correcting her wrongs on Katniss and Prim.
She had some years of happiness with them tho and she has her baby to give her hope and to love, Johanna has no one
@twit129 but Johanna almost never had family and she can’t bath
I really feel like her baby grounded and helped her.
It’s been like 7 years and I still haven’t been able to get over Finnicks death. Still the hardest death to accept across all fantasy franchises
same
Yep
Agree 😢
Same.
To quote Haymitch-“there are no winners-there are survivors “. The brilliance of Suzanne Collins writing is how she could make us feel such sympathy for so many characters.
I truly think people underestimate the pain and tragedy of Johanna's life because of the way she reacts to it. She seems so strong because of her, what else have I got to lose attitude, but really her story is a really tragic one where the beginning, middle and end were just terrible.
fr and it's so annoying to see people overlook her trauma
Most have only seen the films and i didn’t get the whole story in the films
She had to go through all that and keep living as an addict afterward. Other people had similar things happen and either they died or they had other traumatized people to be in community with
Her and Finnick are my favs... so yeah, I question how I enjoy this series.
@Zee Yup, Madge(sp?). She was also the one who originally gave the mockingjay pin to Katniss, iirc.
@@LyraAurora Nope, not Madge, she dies in the bombing of district 12. It was Delly Cartwright that talked to Peeta after the hijacking😊
@@mathilderasmussen8647 I the books it was delly, in the movies it was prim. Idk why they changed it.
@Zee that makes sense
Plus she thought Katniss died bc of that broadcast that said her team died during their mission in Mockingjay.
I think an extra tragedy is that Peeta's whole family was killed in the district 12 bombing: both his parents and siblings. Outside of Katniss and Haymich, he had no one. I'd say maybe Haymich and Peeta are toe to toe, but they're both over Finnick for me; Haymich due to how long he suffered and Peeta over how brutally he did so
Was going to say this also. Peeta is easy for either two or three.
Yes that’s so tragic ❤ and he was only 17 when they died
not to mention his mother used to hurt him (i think)
I feel every tribute from District 4 had a tragic past connected to them. Annie Cresta went mad after seeing beheading survived because of her swimming skills that district 4 was good at due to water filling in the arena. Her mother was just free meat and she had no chance. Finnick was the youngest to win at 14 but was pushed into sex slavery but killed by lizard mutation in 2nd Rebellion
Finnick was beheaded by the lizard mutts, that's why Katniss used the Holo to blow up the sewers, so that Annie didn't have nightmares about Finnick being beheaded
@@eilishcorkery2364 Annie watched someone get beheaded in the arena during her games.
@@eilishcorkery2364 no, in the book it's explained Anne went insane when she'd witnessed a tribute getting beheaded during the games.
Sad that Finnick never got to meet his son in both the book and movies. 😢
His death guts me every time. He was an amazing friend and he deserved to be with Annie and his son. Being a mom, it hurts me even worse now.
@@michellemahar9030apparently the writer, Suzanne Collins, said that After ten years She Is having regrets about killing Finnick because She never imagined how loved he would become
wdym he literally moved to district 12 with annie and their baby so they could become neighbors with katniss and peeta and have a fun little family
@@juliaelize3164 i don't know honestly. I only understood that our love for Finnick made her regret her decision to kill him
@@juliaelize3164 exactly, we should be allowed to live in denial
I like to believe that eventually Johanna was able to work through her fear of water and find at least one person to connect with.
I honestly need some sort of follow up on her character
I like to think she stayed with Annie, helping her raise baby Odair
5: Annie
Alive but PTSD and Finnick died.
4: Peeta
Always feeling neglected, playing games for years, lost his leg, brainwashed but survived and ended up with Katniss.
3: Haymitch
PTSD, depression, alcoholic but managed to stay alive and have a bit of redemption and happyness after a long life of struggles.
2: Finnick
Forced into prostitution and died at the Rebellion War. Sad ending!
1: Johanna
Ended up totally alone, terrible PTSD, her heart full of hatred and feeling betrayed by everyone.
johanna also got addiction from morphlings after she got tortured
I like to think maybe Johanna recovered over time. She was young when the series ended and in the epilogue Panem was no longer corrupt so maybe..?
@@hehhehhehheh-wn7zz I honestly don’t think so. These books are tragic and there aren’t a lot of happy endings. I think Susanne writing that she voted yes during the last movie, solidified where she would end up afterwards. Alone and still bitter.
@@starazaleah7483 I mean, at least she's still badass..?
The mom sucks. Horrible mother. Katniss was the real mom 😅
You do realize that the pregnancy thing wasn't real right? Her mother knew the pregnancy was a lie
I don’t feel like Johanna ever really gets that comfort, even when on the morphling, and she never is able to find a real sense of identity either as it has been stripped from her over and over again…
The Hunger Games is literally peak literature and no one can tell me different lmao
he didn't even mention that Peeta lost his entire family in the district 12 bombing
Genuinely one of the best book series ever written. I'm going to be rereading these books for the rest of my life. Absolutely peak literature
@@CalebCarmichael14 right? like he also was the last of his entire bloodline
also the fact that sure he ended up with Katniss in the end, but he didn’t actually fully recover his memories with her. had some strong ones maybe, but not tangibly remember the 3rd quarter quell he just had the memories of what he got from watching it, meaning the one time Katniss did have real love for him in the games, those are the ones he had to just see to believe rather than have that real memory, meaning he restarted his life with her more from regrowing a love for who she is rather than who he was.
Yeah, Katniss’s trauma is prolly the worst
Yeah wtf is that about
All Haymitch did was use his brain and his surroundings to win the Hunger Games. And how did Snow repay him for it?
Snow killed his family and his girlfriend. :'(
I think that now after having read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, I think Snow wanted to punish District 12 and it's Victor's as much as possible. Especially people from the Seam. It wasn't even just that Haymitch outsmarted the gamemakers, Snow just wanted him to suffer.
That’s snow for you. Hell, if you’ve read Of Songbirds and Snakes you see how truly evil and messed up he is
@@targaryen_timelord that’s honestly a good point that I hadn’t considered.
Given everything that Johanna went through, the rankinh of how tragic her story was is definately well deserved
I wholeheartedly agree
I did not experience the torture Johanna endured, however I endured and survived my own trauma that has left me with a similar difficulty taking showers and I appreciate how he keeps mentioning it repeatedly. It’s a horrible thing to live with, a terrible fear to have constantly hanging over me (and embarrassment, of course). I probably sympathize the most with Johanna and I wish the movies had done a better job of telling her story.
I hope you’re doing much better now and I hope you continue to heal ❤️
Wet wipes are awesome and such a viable option. Take care of yourself!
Honestly. I mean, if we are honest, until 13, Annie and Finnic had NO happy years together.
Yeah and she also lost mags who was like a mother figure to her 😔and they don’t mention her family in the books so I’m assuming she never had one or snow killed them as well
@@marvel096 💯 totally. I really hope Suzan Collins writes more about their story.
And the moments she thought she could have a happy life with Finnick she lost him
When you realize that Annie had to deal with Finnicks death more than once as she thought he died when the peacekeepers bombed that building.
Johanna wanted AN EYE FOR AN EYE kind of Revenge
Was that a movie ending? I don't remember from the books that they ever spoke after the meeting about a final hunger games.
Just years and years of torture
Addiction? Check. Depression?
Haymitch and Joana lost their families after winning the Hunger Games they competed in.
Johanna went through the worse when Katniss broke her promise to her about killing Snow.
Considering that Snow got trampled to death soon afterward, I don't think Johanna really cared that Katniss killed Coin instead of Snow.
Snow was killed regardless. Johanna wouldn't care if Katniss did it or not.
I wish she knew that Katniss in a way did kill Snow because Snow laughed himself to death, lol, but mainly I wish that she had a much happier ending. :(
Same. I wish they at least gave her a friend!
I recently read the hunger games and love it so I’m really glad your making more videos on it. I also love your Harry Potter videos as it’s one of my favourite series. :)
Katniss herself is quite tragic as well, but I agree with your top 5 and their placements
Love the Hunger Games! And your videos, so it's a perfect mix. Thanks for your hard work!
I also noticed Peta also lost his family as well
One thing that was never explained was why Johanna refused Snow when she knew her loved ones would pay the price? Kinda wish the author wrote for Johanna to explain why she did that
I know as a woman I would have done it fuck it I’ll fuck some men to save my family no matter how ugly
I believe you Katniss should be on the list and maybe even Rue
Here’s my ranking
5. Peeta: he got a happy ending
4. Annie: she still has a son which makes it a semi happy ending
3. Haymitch: he had to watch Katniss and peeta be together and he lost his closest loved ones
2. Johanna: she doesn’t have any loved ones and she has terrible ptsd and got tortured
1. Finnick: he had to watch mags die and he had just gotten married to Annie when he was killed by mutts
I think it goes like this:
5) Anne
4)finnick
3)Peeta
2)Haymitch
1) Johanna
Honorary mention) Katniss (reason being, her dad dying, going into the games twice, the temporary loss of her lover, her mom being mentally absent, her sister dying right infrount of her, the physical pain.) I know it's not as much as the others but it's just what I think.
Someone who should be on the list, is katniss. Why?
(SPOILERS)
So.
So much guilt for all the people that died in her name, the district, the bombs...Really hard life but at least she got a good ending🥲
She definetly had ptsd tho too
finnick’s death was so unfair. he did so much to keep everyone safe down there only to get left behind. it feels like no one even tried to help him up. it was frustrating watching katnis just stare at him. idk, it mightve been the right thing to do but it was still so frustrating.
When I watched Mockingjay, the whole time I was dreading Finnick’s death, it was worse than I thought.😭
Poor Johanna though.😭😢😭😢😭😢
2:50 don’t forget about Haymitch’s geese! He probably missed taking care of something that hates him lol
So, unfortunately, finnick was only 15 or 16 when snow started to traffic him
1 Johanna
2 Peeta
3 Haymich
4 Finnick
5 Annie
But it was a HARD decision.
Yes i agree with this
Honestly, if there was some kind of sequel or spin-off from Johanna's perspective, I'd be down for that.
Hunger Games: Catching Fire was my favorite movie out of the 4.
Johanna.
Don’t forget Peeta also lost his entire family when District 12 was destroyed by the Capitol.
i think peetah also went through bad torture other than the crackerjacker venom, he had lots of blood removed and got beat up regularly you saw all the scars and bruises on his face and when they went to rescue him you could see all of the torture weapons, i ultimately think that he deserves the most tragic
I love crackerjacker❤
I agree with your ranking. Everything you said about each one, their years of happiness (if the had some), the torture they were put through, and the aftermath.. I end up coming with the same conclusion!
1 Finnick, he spent the entirety of his time with Annie also forced to protect her from prostitution, and died immediately after his life was worth living.
2 Johanna, where there is life, there is hope, she can find happiness, even if only in our minds. Finnick's story is over.
3 Peeta, he never broke his brainwashing, always doubting reality.
4 Haymitch, he recovered from his alcoholism and ended in a better enough place to find happiness free from the type of trauma peeta and Johanna went through
5 Annie, if Finnick had lived, her story would not have been that tragic, her tragedy is magnified by the loss of her support and protector.
This is a very interesting video. I think tragedy is such a difficult thing to quantify, but Johanna probably was at the top for going through everything she did and never really having any semblance of happiness at any time, whereas all of the others did have it at some point, fleeting as it may have been.
every hunger games tribute has a tragic story i don't think we could say who has more of a tragic story, each of them they have all suffered for it
I kinda wish Jhoana could have a little spinoff story so she could fight off and finally surpass her fear of water and then forgiving KATNISS hope the writer does that
I wish Joanna knew that coin was worse than snow, because Coin was going to turn the same way that snow did, and be even worse.
You didn’t mentioned that peeta lost his whole family through the bombing of district 12.
Keep the new hunger games vids coming 🔥I recently watched all of them on Netflix and have watched all your older videos on the Hunger Games
I find it very interesting how only one person died out of the five most tragic.
When Morgan uploads, it always makes my day ❤❤❤
Every single one of these characters suffered traumas unimaginable and un-understandable unless you've been through the same kinds of hells yourself.
Your break down and conclusions are absolutely correct. ❤ Fantastic job!
Johanna’s ending is so tragic 😭 I had no idea that was her ending.
I agree with your ranking! For another video idea, have you ever heard of the tales of the hunger games? It is created by another TH-camr, who created videos for every single hunger games as well imagined more hunger games after the 75th games. I think he has over 100 hunger games created, and it really expands the universe!
