    I find using the Follow Unit advanced waypoint action for the plane guard helo works great. I usually have it start cold on the deck and it takes off and gets into position as everyone else gets spawned in and starts up their jets for a mission. Good eye candy and it stays locked in position until the mission is over or the helo lands due to fuel

      @@AIRWARFAREGROUP I give it another waypoint "landing" on one of the escorts. That should prevent that. The Helo actually despawns, from the deck, but it takes forever... So better force landing on another ship.
      Edit: Btw even with your method the Helo will land on the closest ship he can use, most of the time it's the carrier.

      @@AIRWARFAREGROUP Wht Shagrat said. I start the helo cold from the ramp, set waypoint one for it a few thousand feet in front of the carrier and set up the follow unit action on the carrier. Then set a landing waypoint on one of the escorts. Most of my missions don’t last beyond 3 hours and haven’t had any problems with this method.

      Have you tried it taking off from one of the escorts???
      Or have it despawn at a time you know none of you will be about the carrier...

    Just a heads up. Easy way to make helo follow the carrier in the same spot relative the deck is on first waypoint set it to follow the carrier. Do the following.
    Add helo to the carrier "take off from parking hot" (it will spawn on the forward deck between CATs 1 and 2.)
    Give it a waypoint not too far away. (WP1)
    On WP1 add Advanced Action "Perform Task > Follow > (have it follow the carrier. Spacing as follows (Distance -500 , Elevation 300, Interval 656)
    The result is: When the mission starts as you are pulling your Hornet up to the CAT you'll see the helo spooling up and taking off. It'll go out to WP1 then swing around and maintain a slow cruising hover at the same pace as the carrier.
    No need for measuring stuff out and matching bearings.

      @@AIRWARFAREGROUP Its all in the huge learning curve that is DCS. I learn new random crap everyday it seems. Case in point, couple comments below about simply pressing the scroll wheel and drag for quick measuring. Had no idea till I read that. The above steps I mentioned were after my own trial and error making an authentic looking battle group. Love what you guys do. Keep it up.

    For the helicopter escorting the carrier I can recommend the MOOSE script framework. Don't need to be a programmer to set it up, it's just a few lines you can copy. But that ensures, that the heli is always following the carrier with a fixed distance and the same speed, even if the carrier turns

    These videos are amazing for new people trying to get into DCS World and having to deal with the, sometimes daunting, Mission Editor. I'm a single player guy and tend to do a lot of training missions. Not shilling for scripts or anything. I'm sure there's pros and cons for each method. For example if I'm in Marianas simulating a training mission to bomb Farallon de Medinilla, I just use MOOSE to handle the AWACS, Rescue Helo, and Tanker. Maybe it's the software developer in me, but I have a very short simple script I just paste into the mission and everything is taken care of. But your method is definitely more approachable for people who don't want to script.
    Your video was very informative. Learned a couple tricks I'll definitely use in the future. Thanks for the vid'. ;)

      Nice thing about MOOSE is setting up the recovery tanker and rescue helo are dead simple first timer level projects, and if anyone actually goes in the drink the rescue helo will automatically go and mime picking the pilot up and taking him home, you can also set its home base as another ship if you want to avoid accidentally fouling the deck at all costs.

    Did something similar for Arma 2 recently, took a lot of time with photo and video research as well as tweaking with script commands, the immersion is well worth it.

      @@AIRWARFAREGROUP scripting and editing and even making custom textures is always hard at first, but the satisfaction when it works and seeing the finished product is worth it. Plus, learning what works is always beneficial for future templates. 🍻

    One thing I've been trying to do, unsuccessfully, is have the plane guard helo fly the usual racetrack orbit as it flies alongside the carrier. I'm estimating here, but think the helo ("Angel") is about a half mile out from the ship and about 500 feet up. Just estimates.

      300 feet or lower is published procedure for helicopters from what I’ve read. The MOOSE Recovery Tanker script might work for this and would just change the aircraft type and airspeed and altitude to fit.

      @@AIRWARFAREGROUP That sounds about (my sense of distance is terrible). i was on a plane guard flight once while I was a civilian employee of the Navy - there was no real practical reason for me to be on it, but I knew the right buzzwords to drop when I met with the squadron's ops department head. (I was an S-3 guy when I was in the Navy.)

      Our guy GALT is looking into it with MOOSE Scripting...but check out NAVAIR 00-80T-105 online sometime. If you download it and search, you can find all the references to SAR Helo or just type in Helicopter in the pdf search...Good stuff.

    If you want some very realistic decks i recommend the EA-6B and SH-60 AI mods, with the naval deck equipment mod. If anyone wants pics of what you can do lmk i have a lot of screenshots from me and my buddies missions where the decks look pretty much real to life for late 90’s carrier ops

    I love setting up busy, realistic decks but constantly run into the same three problems: AI taxi issues, multiplayer spawn issues (player flight delayed to start), and a lack of liveries to make a coherent CVW.

      We were able to get 16 clean multiplayer spawn points with CAT 1 used for static parking

      @@AIRWARFAREGROUP Statics parked just on CAT 1 right? I usually fly with mix AI/human players, so parking along a cat means closing off certain spawns with more parked statics so the AI don't try to launch from the closed cat. This is normally fine for all Hornets, but when client Tomcats are added to the mix, Tomcat fliers can't spawn at all unless there are 6 or more open spawn points, which then eliminates the ability of closing off a cat and using AI. There's something screwy with how DCS handles Tomcat spawns over multiplayer.

      I should clarify that my only AI I have launching are the AWACS (E-2D) and SAR Helicopter for Plane Guard) When the mission starts, they launch within the first couple of minutes.     Thanks for the video! I am a DCS beginner, what I am trying to create is, flying the Huey from a moving carrier for practice take offs and LDGs. I own the Supercarrier module and the Huey of course. Can you please help me to setup a misson like this please? I am able to setup a mission with the Huey on an Airforcebase but not a carrier. Thank you!

      Hi, meanwhile I created a small mission and I can do my traing flights- but I am not able to add static objects...when I zoom in on the carrier, I can only see the blue marking of the carrier- NOT the flightdeck itself with its positions on the deck...dont know why that is?

    My dad told me how to setup the Carrier group, but it was from the Vietnam war. There are six ships around the Carrier. He was on a Destroyer and a Destroyer Escort. He said the group always ran around 28 knots. Is it different now?

    A year later and the spots are still wrong. Some advice is to find a flight deck director to learn the spots on the deck before posting. You can only get 7 aircraft on Cat 1 (1 Row)

      Hey there, if you mean spawn on the elevator, set your aircraft as takeoff from parking or take off from parking hot. In single player mode, it will spawn you in the area between elevator 1/2 and the landing lane. Let us know how it works out. ~Juice

      Ah, should be an easy fix for ya...so, go to the main DCS menu in game, hit your settings gear icon near the top left, go to MISC. Tab and top right, F2 View Effects, hit the drop-down and select Floating. Let us know if it works for ya...this is what I have set for that affect. ~ Juice

      Strange...When I fly in formation, Floating is on too and I get the same effect. I'll check other settings, but I'm sure that's the one that has that effect. I have TrackIR external view turned off...check yours. My User External Snap Views is On.

    You really crammed a lot of jets on the bow. Usually there are about 6 to 7 jets. The idea is, to have enough space for each individual aircraft to maneuver from the spot to a cat, because if on startup a jet goes unserviceable and you need a spare or shuffle pilots to another jet, it is bad if you need to move 2-3 other jets to free enough space. There is startup video on YT with Hornets on a carrier, where the jet sits on the cat 1 lane for pre flight and they do the walk-around and full startup. You can see a lot of how they stack the planes to ensure you can get to every part of the aircraft.

    Do not use that approach for helicopter, just put the helicopter at the Alt you need, I will use 400ft usually, and give it a task to follow, thats all
