    The sequel should be a P.I. game. This way it'll give the player more freedom with cases and side quests. L.A. Noire can't do side quest or act ivies because you are on the clock. If you are a private eye, you can do anything you want. Not only will it give more gameplay variety and freedom, the narrative will be opened up for more possibilities too.

      @4th Chairman The problem here is that there's a big lack of emphasis. You have a case going on, Newspaper flashbacks on characters you haven't seen yet, Cole's flashbacks, and then all of a sudden Cole just tails Elsa and sleeps with her. For such a relevant event in the plot, there's very little build up to it (no Cole's wife, no rising romance) so it just feels cheap and mingled with less important information. Take a movie like No Country For Old Men for example, for every ounce for subtlety that movie has it also emphasizes what's important, and that's why it's a masterpiece.

    If I had to list reasons that I liked this game, I'd have to say 1: the music, both the original jazz score, and the period music played over the car radio as you cruise the streets of LA. 2: The huge open map of 1947's Los Angeles. 3: The cars. How cool is it to drive around in those great 40's cars. 4: The time period and setting. Post war Los Angeles. There's gangsters, and jazz clubs, and crooked cops and politicians, and all the things which make Chandler's Los Angeles such a great backdrop for his detective novels. 5: The story, which immerses you in your own film noir.

    L.A. Noire is definitely one of my favourite games of all time. For me, the only weak aspect is Cole's overarching story. I would have preferred him to remain more of a Columbo style character whose life beyond the cases is hinted at or largely left a mystery. I love the world building. I didn't need to be able to bowl or whatever other types of mini games people have suggested. I actually think that L.A. Noire's world is more immersive that most open world games because the open world is "just" as backdrop. I never felt the need to explore areas. When I was in a building talking to a suspect I just left after I finished - I really didn't feel the need explore everything. In games that encourage free roaming, I think you're more likely to realise that it's just a fairly shallow backdrop.

    Essentially. The billing up until this games release is you're going to have to learn to interrogate suspects and read their faces and call them on lies. But as you start the game. It quickly becomes a game, you realize, of, do their eyes dart? It's like halfway through the game. The devs realized this was the one trick pony. And so they start to make people's eyes dart who are telling the truth. Which then destroys any semblance of a system at play which you could organically participate in.

    Luke - I take what your saying regarding not being lectured in games like this compared to mafia 3 but these games are just fundamentally different in tone and narrative choice. LA Noire is largely played through the eyes of Cole Phelps and takes a observer view on everything that occurs. Cole has very few controversial opinions throughout the game and the real meat of the game is era and the behaviour of everyone within it - a major reason why I like it. In contrast, the creators of Mafia 3 have chosen to take the perspective of the protagonist more heavily as major game element. The tone, achievements and even enemies of the game partially reflects obvious cultural motivation(s) of Lincoln, who is actually has mix of social justice and moral ‘grey anti-hero’ in the game. Basically, the two games differ because LaN seeks to focus on clearer law enforcement objectives in a specific time/era while M3 is already pitched by cultural setting and narrative linked to the main character. It wouldn’t make sense for M3 to take backseat observer view on racism like LaN because some of the wider motivations of the protagonist are linked to these elements and is not aimed at ultimately at solving cases. LaN could not be like M3 because giving Cole more opinion/moral greyness would add too much complexity. If LaN was more heavily based around Cole’s motivations (that would drive the narrative) would he be expected to consider a far wider range of solutions to that of just solving cases rewarded in the game- disrupting its mechanics and end goals. Anyway, thanks for great critique!

    One thing that's always astounded me about this game is everyone tried to act like the facial tech actually worked and you could play through the game reading poker faces if you were good. Not so. In an effort to make the gameplay something more than my eyes dart and I'm lying, they don't and I tell the truth. The devs tried to pull little gotchas. Which effectively makes the player pull hair in frustration and go get the walkthrough out.

  • @shaunsteele4968
    @shaunsteele4968 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You learn halfway through the game that the facial animation was a waste of a lot of money. All it was still able to achieve was a game of do their eyes dart. And then when the devs realized that's what it is. They change the rules and never give you the new ones. You go get a strategy guide so you don't get kicked from the force.

      For those of you that haven't. It's the eye dart and they lie game. Then halfway in you feel the distinct moment where they felt the game was too easy and start having honest eye darting lawyers and stuff. And it's completely formula shattering. Just not in the right ways. In a let me pull up a guide way.

    • @shaunsteele4968
      @shaunsteele4968 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm my honest opinion. It wouldve been criticized for it. It wouldve lost review points for it. But they shouldve just kept it the eyes dart and they lie game so at least players could not use a guide and sort of feel detectivey.

    • @shaunsteele4968
      @shaunsteele4968 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you like set piece games. Set very historically. Like assassins creed. This would be up your alley. They spent so much time on 1940s la. It's a treat to just drive around in. The detective part of the game fails. But it does have a good story. If you want a better detective game that actually follows logic and will make you think. I would recommend the Sherlock Holmes games from frog something studios. Very good detective games.

    Just wanted to throw it into the discussion, that while you may not outright fail cases based on poor interrogation there are a few cases in which it is possible to accuse the wrong suspect. You will still pass the case but your rating will be low and you'll get yelled at for being a bad detective. I think this is better than restarting the interrogation upon failure because it gives you a lasting feeling of failure. Whenever I convict the wrong person I always try harder in the following case to make sure I don't mess up. So the interrogation system isn't completely pointless.

    This is probably my favourite Rockstar game now. It is quite a focused experience that has some genuinely excellent characters and a blending of a serious plot with elements of goofy and appropriate humour. The story is kinda why I like it as the gameplay is either cool, but not that interactive, or interactive but not that good. The gunplay is pretty underwhelming, the driving is fine, the melee is genuinely just not that good and the sleuthing is kinda fun, but too often not actually that difficult, however the story is great.
    I like how it kinda has an episodic feeling to it at the beginning, becoming more integrated as the game goes on, it tackles era appropriate themes really well and it is cliche but in a good way. The collectibles are also some of the best in any game, as the newspaper cuttings actually become more and more important as the game goes on.
    The main issues I have with the story are that some of the characters are just kinda rubbish. Stefan Bekowsky is so dull it hurts and Elsa Lichtmann is pretty meh as well. Jack Kelso is also imo a bit mixed and the way they do the tensions between him and Cole isn't really that impressive. The ending is really well done and symbolically vital and almost every case has a decent narrative to it. All of the sidekicks bar Bekowsky are amazing in different ways. Rusty Galloway is bumbling and a pure "bad cop" kinda character, Roy Earle is corrupt, shadey and witty and Herschel is crabby but for good reason whilst being a genuinely decent cop. The only issue with Cole really is that sometimes the responses seem a bit out of character. The bit in one of the early missions where he calls someone a left-wing parasite is imo kinda out of character and if it was to happen, should have occurred much later in the story as he became sucked into the immorality of policing. Also the twist during the homocide is really not that good and could have been done a bit better however I do think the battle with the guy was a cool concept if it made more use of the senses and the game actually had good shooting mechanics.
    It kinda feels like an adventure game in terms of what it shines at.
    This kinda epitomises what I like and dislike about Rockstar games as being kinda meh at best gameplay wise but with good characters, stories and world-building, something true of most of the GTA series, Red Dead, Bully and this, amongst others. This game however has the added benefit of not having a massive open world and being pretty structured, something which certainly improves the ability to tell stories in coherent ways.
    My main wishes if this game would be made again would be more consequence for going bad cop in terms of branching storylines, either less gunplay / melee or better gunplay / melee and a bit more difficulty to the cases. Otherwise though I love this game.

    This game is very enjoyable. Its a laid back, relaxing experience. Its a shame that Rockstar abandoned this style. I love period pieces that aren’t Medieval, Roman, the Future, or other typical stuff. I would love to see more stuff like this set in the tension of the 60’s, the roaring 20’s, the Great Depression. There are so many stories you could tell via the PI or police style of game.

    There are a few side objectives, but the main draw is the narrative.

    My absolute favorite game of all time as well. Not even close has anything else come. The hours one can waste, or enjoy, just roaming around exploring this highly detailed and expansive world is astounding. You can go down every alley and behind every house through the yards and even drive right into a swimming pool, trust me I would know :). As he pointed out though it is really the interviews and freedom you have to do it all however you wish that are my favorite elements. Well, it doesn't hurt that I LOVE the period and they so masterfully capture it and I always felt immersed completely into this time period as well as the place. The music ads a lot to it but making you find a rotary dial phone to call dispatch or use your cars radio for things like that is another way they help you experience life the way it used to be.
    I have to disagree slightly though about the driving mechanics as I definitely felt a big difference in the response and maneuverability of the different cars. Yeah one sedan might feel a lot like another but a sports car or a flat bed truck were massively different from a sedan or such. One of my favorite things to do, when in the mood for some GTA style destructive fun, was to get in a garbage truck and just plow through everything in town. Also even though maybe you couldn't completely fail, if you made some effort to play the game, I wouldn't know because I never felt any inclination to not really get into it. I always felt like I really was doing the job of this LAPD detective. I also found that it does make a great deal of difference in how things turn out if you do it right or better or just screw up or get experimental. You do get a rating on each case like a 3 out of 5 badges or whatever and it isn't easy to do it all right either. The game may be linear technically, but for me it NEVER felt that way. You can choose in what order you want to investigate things and when you choose to interview someone. This also means you may collect more evidence or talk to more people first which will effect your experience when you then talk to your suspect, for example. In short, I felt that what little flaws may be there, I think they are far less noticeable or influential on the experience for me than it was for you Luke. I would still have to give it at least a 4.9 out of 5. For anyone that this period or culture doesn't appeal to I suppose that would make quite a difference in their overall enjoyability.

    I try to pay attention to details but still find myself guessing during interrogations. Ultimately, I get most questions wrong but the story progresses nevertheless so there's no point in trying any harder. I know this has been said before countless times. I guess I'm in that group that simply doesn't "get it" but can see it's charm due to it's 1940's setting.

    I’m just not watching this, but I think the description between Mafia 3 and LA Noires depictions of racism are not the same because narratively, racism is a part of the story of Mafia 3. The main character in Mafia 3 is a mixed raced veteran in the American south during the height of the civil rights movement, and that’s a important part of the story. LA Noire happens to take place in a time where racism was very prevalent, but it’s main characters are white, and it story isn’t about racism, so of course it’s not a focus.

I remember I was going through a state of mental funk that I just couldn't shake. Then this game comes out and it was something I immersed myself into.
