Nice informative video. I have a 2002 Yamaha SX Viper and this is exactly correct. I also agree with Scott White's suggestion to flip the wear plate over if needed. I could add the Service Manual specifies a sheave width of 35. mm factory which is measured between the right and left sheaves at each of their ends. For anyone wanting to get picky on a clutch rebuild. And also when reinstalling the secondary the main axle bolt torque spec is 46 ft pounds. Happy sledding!

If you dont have thinner washers, disassemble the clutch and flip the wear plate the screws hit on. After a few thousand miles, there is a groove worn into it. The new surface sometimes is enough to correct the spacing.

    I bought a replacement belt. (GATES G-Force).
I am being told to ONLY use Yamaha OEM belts. Did I just waste my $?
    It's for a '98 VMax SX 600 Twin

I have had good results with both oem belts and aftermarket. Just make sure you have the correct belt for the sled per the belt manufacturer.

Can the washers (shims) just be removed instead of replacing with thinner versions?

They can depending on how you need to adjust the spacing. You would either have no washers for a brand new belt or tight system or start adding washers as things wear.

Hi Milo farms. My 2007 phazer won't go into any gear (I backed it out of the trailer and now it won't move). It worked fine yesterday. I tried shaking the sled and everything. Any ideas?

My best guess is something is stripped in the reverse gear box or a bad reverse motor. You could study the parts schematic breakdowns to see how it works. I would try setting the sled flat and taking the drive belt off. Start the sled and let it idle and warm up. Try to shift it to reverse or drive and wiggle the secondary clutch by hand to see if it will engage into drive. If you can get it locked into drive and there are no loose parts in the gear box you may be able to ride it.

Those bolt ends look very worn out too.
