Update : I traded my 2010 Silverado LTZ 5.3, for a 2015 Silverado LTZ 6.2 and brought my range technology disabler over to the new truck. It worked great on my 10, my gas mileage seemed to improve slightly, and oil consumption stopped.
The 15, the mileage went down a small amount, oil consumption either slowed down dramatically or stopped.
I tested it for 3 weeks with and 3 weeks without. I drive about 100 miles a day 70% are highway miles the rest city driving.
Just like the 10, it works great, the engine seems happier, in my mind as a life long drag racer, I don't like the idea of 4 dead pistons and rods putting unnecessary drag on the rest of the engine. I get the concept but if I wanted a 4 cylinder that's what I would have bought. As for the 6.2, I love it, it's a beast, she runs great and sounds good too.

Not only is it annoying. It also causes lifters to lock down and the possibly wipe the cam. These lifters can only be replaced after removing the heads. Then,if the cam is bad,you have to remove engine mounts so you can lift the engine to remove the oil pan. That's the only way, short of pulling your engine,to get the oil pump from around your crank. A big job.

For anybody who doesn’t know you can run these trucks in Manual mode but put it one gear down from the highest gear (5th gear for me, since I have a 6spd) and leave it there when you’re not on the interstate and don’t need the overdrive, and it’ll still act like the normal automatic and stay in V8 mode 100%. I have ran two tanks and have not seen any noticeable difference on fuel economy. I have seen better throttle response. It eliminated the intermittent strange jerks the tranny did particular at lower speeds. I spoke with the service manager at my local GM dealer and he said warranty will not be affected. He was curious and wanted me to report on the performance results after about a months use.

I cant wait to try one of these but also FYI not all of the jerking and shuddering is due to this. There is a Torque Converter issue with all of these trucks. GM knows about it but the service guys always try to blow it off. I found the service bulletin from GM and took it in to be serviced and now they are replacing it. When you are informed there is not much they can do or say. EVERYONE should know about these TCC issues, i know we all have felt the shudder like your driving on rumble strips when you go from a coast to tipping back in the throttle.

Cool...yeh, that DoD (4 cylinder mode deal) really upsetted me for years on my 2014 Chevy Silverado 4x4 (5.3L). Finally bought a canned tuner (Diablo i3 inTune) performance tuner module. I was able to disable that DoD, disable the speed limiter, increase throttle response 10%, recalibrate for taller tires, and do their canned "Flex 91 octane" tune. Everything I did was readily apparent (the module "does what it says"). Amazing how the truck runs now. Smoother, better throttle response, better acceleration, and it holds the shifts longer (like a truck should). I was also able to "tweak" the 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4 shifts for different modes. I don't work for the company, but the best $380 I ever spent.

I drove many miles from Wi to western South Dakota at 65MPH(on state roads) in 5th gear(roughly 2k RPM) and still averaged 22MPG. Most engines are designed to run most efficiently at between 1800 and 2k RPM so don't think for a minute you're hurting it running 2 or 2200 RPM for long periods. Anyway, happy with the Range. Also, a significant amount of oil is lost due to 0w/20 oil at 210 degrees being blown out the breather tube, into the valves where they (the valves) get gummed up. Just took an 800 mile trip, and emptied the catch-can before leaving. At the end of the trip, had about 2~3 ounces of oil in it.

I have a 2014 Silverado Z71 that I purchased new. Within 30,000 miles the thing started drinking nearly 2 quarts of oil between 4,500 mile oil changes. I found that astounding and disturbing as I have a 5.3 liter in my other truck with 160,000 miles that consumes no oil. My drive is along the Lake Huron shoreline for about 30 miles a day at 55 mph and that leaves the truck in 4 cylinder mode for nearly the whole trip. Since I purchased the Range Module my oil consumption has dropped to nearly nothing between oil changes. I would recommend this to anyone.

I have 25,850 miles on my 2017 LT Z71 with the 4cyl mode active. I noticed no change in sound and I am averaging in and around town 19.4mpg. Now I live in a Foothills region of SC. The truck does do a lot of coasting and I have a K&N cold air induction system on the vehicle. I talked to a GM mechanic and he said switching from 8 to 4cyl does not change the oil consumption or wear characteristic of the engine. The mechanic no longer works for GM, he has his own shop, no real conflict of interest. I think the system name is ADEM (Active Dynamic Engine Management), it seems to work well. Now my wife has a 2019 Chevy Silverado LT Z71 purchased in December 2019 with the new engine management system. The engine varies cylinder use from 1 - 8 cylinders. With 2300 miles on her truck, with Hwy driving once a month, she averages about 22mpg. Wife's truck has no cold air induction system on it, just factory. P.S. she did not want me to put a cold air system on her new truck, the noise level is not to her taste. I will say this, the sound when the engine sucks more air with your foot in it only last for a few seconds, until the engine settles on a stable speed and RPM.
So I can only speak from my experience, but the cylinder switching in our trucks do improve mpg. GM mechanic said the engine management systems varies which injectors are turned on and timing with cylinder variation. Lubrication and coolant systems continue to work as if all 8 cylinders are active. Engine Mpg also improves significantly when you are in cruise control. The real bottom line is we drive computers. :-)

All the serious issues for the GM 5.3 V8 are related/caused by the engine management system and the repairs can cost thousands.
I have the Range Technology Modules on a 2014 GMC Sierra and a 2014 GMC Denali. Both vehicles now run as V8's should and no issues after 3 years with the Range product. Little or no difference in gas mileage and a small price to pay to avoid major engine issues. A system created to satisfy GM and the EPA, but a huge headache for vehicle owners.

GM did not iron it out, this unit is used to protect your engine, any performance increase is a bonus. They've had lifter (AFM/DFM lifters) failures in all 5.3 and 6.0 AFM/DFM truck engines from 2007 to 2021 with NO re-design. in 2022 they disabled it at the factory and in 2023 they got rid of it completely. If you have a lifter failure and catch it early you can replace the affected lifters ($2500 at dealer) and wait for it to happen again, if you let it go too long it will trash your cam and possibly your engine ($5-6000 at dealer). You can convert back to a standard non-AFM/DFM configuration with a cam/standard lifters/VLOM delete for big dollars after warranty at dealer/ private garage or install this device, remain in V8 mode for the life of your truck and avoid all of this mess.

I can’t wait for mine. The whole issue is when you jump on the throttle from rolling. Just my 2 cents, but it fails to activate v8 while decelerating. It downshifts properly, but if your still rolling and step on it the truck is in the correct gear the motor just isn’t giving it the juice and causes that shudder, I hate it. Like taking off in a stick shift without enough throttle!

Great Video. When I see folks drive these new trucks I often wonder what they do for a living to afford them. Since I can't, I'll live vicariously ;) I drive a 95 K1500 but am curious how the new ones are. It looks pretty cool and the gas mileage looks great. I was curious/jealous about the 4 cyl mode but now I understand it much better. Thanks for the video.

My 08 Z71 has a new crate motor with 3,000 miles, 33x12.50 tires and I get 14.5mpg if I'm lucky with the AFM working. I'm gonna try this thing and see if it improves, and I don't wanna possibly cause premature wear in the cylinders.

I watched this video yesterday and realized I was able to deactivate the active fuel management with my Edge G2 programmer.

Raul Cantu I had that issue with my ‘14 Silverado 1500. Then it got worse and started reading anti theft warning and wouldn’t start. I found this video and read more about it. Figured I would try it and see. My grounds weren’t that bad but I cleaned both of them under the dash pad and added dielectric grease and haven’t had any issues in 6 months.
