    The grin on your face belays your excitement about these knives. My local Walmart doesn’t have the white, $5.00 model as of this time, but I appreciate your heads up call last Thursday night regarding the website availability of the newly released D2 version. I ordered three while we were on the phone and they were delivered on Saturday. They are all you say they are right out of the package, smooth and sharp. What a value at the offered price. Given the quality, I really don’t see how they can sell them at the going prices. Thanks for keeping your viewers in mind when you discover good, useful products. 😊😊

      I was thinking the same ever since I first used one. The price point suggests they are "punching above their price level.

    Good video!
    I found out several years ago that some, but not all, of these ozark trail knives have great steel and great features for “cheap” knives.
    Now I gotta look for a couple of these d2 blades😁

    Those Ozark Trail knives are providing a pretty good blade for a very affordable price point. The knife components and the build quality of the knives covered in this video is impressive. For $10 or less these knives are priced for mass purchase at the big box retailer by the common man types. Simply, these particular knives work. They deploy pretty smoothly, they cut, and the slide lock allows the knife to close one handed. Thanks for your review and demonstration of these knives. - Tennessee Smoky

    I have to agree on every point about both these knives. I also use them every day at work and home. The orange one is still my favorite. Mine also has the same two different color handles that started happening after a few weeks of working at my railroad job. I thought it was the grease that did it. But must be just in the coloring they use. The green handle silver blade $5 knife is also a good one with buttery smooth action. My new orange ones arrived in the mail today, my local store sold out immediately. Fun stuff 😀

      That's another aspect regarding these knives.....it's just plain fun to get them if you can, and watch the availability. Then when you finally do get it or both variations, just fiddling around with them is akin to a kid with a new toy.

    The orange one is better with a true more pronounced drop point blade especially for hog hunters & even deer hunters. The top edge has a more rounded back near the point.
    This really helps push the guts away from the skin when gutting. Especially helpful on a hog where the front legs are closer to the back legs than on a deer. You might have to gut a hog to understand what I’m trying to say on this.

    I bought 2 of them when they came back in stock a week or so ago and they both seem to be the old version without the reversable clip. Both are smooth and sharp.

    Just a simple piece of custom heat treated s30v I made one of my skinning knives at 61.5rc and that knife cleans 15 to 20 deer a year and it will easily go 3 deer without edge touch ups or stropping and goes thru the season on one edge without issue and that is skinning, boning and parting out the deer. That same knife broke down two bull elks out in the field by my self just two pack horses with me... That knife finished the second bull and would almost still shave and would easily cleanly slice phone book paper. That edge with a quick strop up would do another 2 bulls like a razor blade would. The fine silica in the deers furr is abrasive and will absolutely eat up cheaper steels but on abrasion resistant steels like custom heat treat s30v really isn't bothered by it because it's not in contact with it that much just when opening the stomach and once that's done my edge isn't touching furr again.

    • @CumberlandOutdoorsman
      @CumberlandOutdoorsman  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      That's great. There are no doubt better knives out there, and custom made knives like the one you described are durable, and probably better than most commercial knives. The point I was making is that these knives are alot of knife for the money. The Ozark Trail D2 blade is around the 60rc in hardness, which is comparable to more expensive blades by manufacturers like Benchmade, Spiderco, and Civivi, so for a fraction of the price they really change the game in for knife manufacturers.

    D2 tool steel is a great mid-grade improved step up from the usual lower cost 440c stainless or such. The high ranking high toughness, high edge retention steels for knives would be CruWear, CPM-3V, or CPM Magnacut but be prepared to pay the money.

      No....according to my limited experience with it. I don't know if the steel is actually 3cr13. It doesn't specify what kind of steel other than it saying "stainless steel" on the package.

      Freehand or fixed angle? Either way, the vast majority of the time the problem is not fully removing the burr and/or starting at too high of a grit and not removing enough material to form a clean new apex. Or it's taking so long to get a burr that they start rushing and using too much pressure and compromise the new apex.
      If you're reprofiling or doing a full sharpening of a dull knife you want aggressive cut. 200ish or lower and always minimal pressure and create nice big obvious burrs when you're learning. 75% of your time is on that first stone and the knife should be sharp and mostly deburred before you ever move up in grit. High grits are just refining scratches and cleaning up any remaining burr.
      If you're getting somewhat sharp edges, but trying to get to paper towel cutting, hair splitting type edges, are you stropping with compound? Stropping is huge, especially if you're not confident with burr removal on stones.
      Steel and heat treat quality plays a massive role in sharpness too. Some knives just won't get ultra sharp and are too soft to get a clean burr removal. When you're learning, use knives with a proven steel from established brands and take that variable out.
      Check out Neeves Knives sharpening video playlist. He has very in depth and detailed tutorials and knows what he's talking about.

    I bought one of the five dollar fixed blades. It’s a shame we’re at a time and place that we can’t buy American and are possibly buying a product made by slaves. And often times a design that’s been stolen. But hey, we all have finances to manage and yes one stashed in places is good. If they’re cheap we will really use them. My Microtech and other high end knives I tend to baby and often find myself carrying my good knife and a folding Klein utility (which I love too)

    What is D2 steel?

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It's a type of steel developed in the early 1900's and has been used in tool and die for it's resistance to wear. It's also called "D2 tool steel."
      Contains roughly 1.55% carbon, 12% chromium, 0.25% vanadium, and 0.8% molybdenum. It's not a "stainless steel" hence the coatings used on some D2 knives to improve oxidation resistance.
      These names such as "D2" or other steel grades are given via patents with people who work in development of materials in the foundry industry.

    • @eb1684
      @eb1684 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@exothermal.sprocket Thanks for that info. I also just looked it up on the internet
      and there was an extensive description.
      Couldn't you just wipe the blade with an oily rag for oxidation resistance?
      Thanks again!

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@eb1684 Certainly just a light wipe of oil would do you well. Even if you've cleaned the blade and completely dried it, the oxygen in the air will work on the contents of the steel and oxidize it over time. Most people will have it pocketed, and there's sweat moisture that would also affect it. Main thing is just to keep it dried and a rub of oil across it. There's some corrosion resistance to steels that aren't "stainless" but it's typically less.

    • @Edcreviewer
      @Edcreviewer 24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Where d2 is highly sensitive to corrosion is from acidity, salt will corrode it of course but it's not all that bad but acidity will corrode it SO FAST.
