You actually said it… fix blades are just not appropriate in most settings. Knives are really not accepted socially. The vast majority of us do not live on a homestead, we spend our time in work offices and living in cities. Some of us even have to wear suits daily. A folding life can be used by all as it’s discreet. A fix blade is not. You even called the one “spooky”. That’s not something I can take to work. If I’m going camping or hiking, that’s different, but for urban environments, nothing beats a folder.

Nobody cares if you're wearing a knife. Your job may not allow for it, but there's no social problem with it. If someone doesn't like it, tell them to effoff. It will become socially unacceptable when people stop making it normal.
I am on the East Coast. Increasingly we don't carry any knives at all because carrying a knife has been banned-- or there are rules like they cannot lock or have a point.
When you said you were no longer using a folding knife, I thought for sure it cut you real bad. The orange bandage looks like they had to sew your finger back on.
I used to be a big folder guy too up until a few years ago. Being an avid outdoorsman, fixed blades are just so much more superior, for everything. I like a blade about 4" or so for a "do everything" kind of knife. I've found when doing food prep in the field, (cutting fruit/vegetables, dressing game) the longer blade is much appreciated. But its still small enough to not frighten certain people in public and do fine tasks. They're easier to clean, they don't have lots of small parts that need maintenance, they're more comfortable when carving, and they're faster to get to in a hurry. They just work better. Bark River and Benchmade are my go-to adventure blades.
Perhaps it's more common in my neck of the woods, but a lot of fellas seem to carry overly large bowie knives hanging from their belts, common enough that public spaces that normally would balk at such things have turned a blind eye to the practice. Much like you, I find it slightly distasteful as well. I've never considered a horizontal carry for a fixed blade, finding comfort in a folding automatic clipped inside my pocket. You raise valid points as ever, a fixed blade would be ideal; I prefer a knife in my hand and able to be used as quickly as possible- hence my preference for automatic knives, being able to be deployed on the draw- but a fixed blade is the natural pinnacle of such an idea. Great video as ever, Cody, blessings to you and yours.
Why are you so worried about what tools another man decides to carry and how he decides to carry them? Perhaps it is actually your attitude that is truly "distasteful".
I love that you’re going this direction! I personally carry a fixie in a leather cross draw appendix. 3.25 cutting edge 3.5 blade 7.5 total length! It is all I carry and have carried for over a year and if anything ever happens to it I will only purchase another fixed blade. As for all the people saying it’s not viable for city or people forward positions…. I WORK FULL TIME FOR A CHURCH! Not once has it ever been topic of conversation or intimidated anyone.
You do know those were seized pew pews that were bound for destruction, right? Benchmade was asked by the local law enforcement to help since they have the tools to do the job. Benchmade actually supported pro 2A candidates. I am not slhilling for them, as I refuse to buy any more of their way overpriced knives. This anti 2A stuff is just fabricated and the truth should be known.
I'm transported back to those boyhood days at the five-and-dime, standing in front of the display case of pocket knives, coveting them all. My first pocket knife was a Kamp King.
You do you and I do me. Still carrying a folding stainless steel Army Surplus vintage 1967 Vietnam issue version of a boyscout pocket knife. Was tricky to sharpen untill diamond shapers came on the market.😊
I carry my Bradford USA Guardian 3 Full flat grind in CPM 3V steel as my daily . I carry it in a kydex sheath with clips in my right front pocket . I seem to have lost all interest in folding knives, even my Strider SnG's .
Prolly 4 out of 7 days a week I carry a benchmade bugout, but have love for a fixed blade knife. If I’m feeling frisky or know I need a serious knife I take my ZT 0006 or for something smaller I have a colt CT17 (a family heirloom) that I really like. The zero tolerance knife is the finest knife bushcraft blade I’ve EVER owned. A worthy blade for any proho.
I bought the "Osborne 940", after looking/watching, a million articles/videos. Iconic, classic, and good looking, no less. BUT, after my purchase, i was instantly dissapointed. Not only is it over priced, its over hyped, in my opinion. Decent materials, but so are tons of other manufacturers. Its just extremely, underwhelming, and somewhat perplexing, just what the "big deal" is. Ive got tons of blades, from a million other manufacturers, that ive never had this buyers remorse feeling, as i do with the "Benchmade Osborne". Its relegated to the drawer, because of the ridiculous price, generic features, and im afraid to use it, mess it up. Im almost certain, ill gift it to someone, who needs a blade. Stay safe friends. - Paul.
@lesterblade Thanks!, for the life of me, i just dont get it, the 940. Way over priced, extremely underwhelming features, and the ridiculous "fan boy" following. No knife snob here, but i absolutely expect, to get what i pay for.
@inssy2588 that's a very good point. But I think, I'll gift it to someone, someday, so that it goes to a "good home". They can then use it, as they see fit, and I can be ignorantly happy, that it's being used as a tool should be used.
Phew! I thought you were gonna say you found a reason to not like the 940. Fixed and folding all have their own purposes though. I wouldn’t go out into the woods to camp or hunt without a fixed for sure, and maybe in town a small fixed wouldn’t be so bad either. But if you wanna be minimalistic that day, just going to the beach or wearing a suit a pocket knife could still do what you need. Most the time I wear a suit and don’t want a pixie clip to show, or have the outline of a knife down in my pocket (black pants show outlines and curves more than most colors) I just use my Swiss classic and slip that in there. Good enough for the fancy party or meeting. Not like I’ll be opening stuff in the shop dressed like that.
I neck carry a Mora Eldris, very similar length to that second knife. I really love neck carry. Looks like nothing, people ask me all the time what it is. When it's not appropriate I tuck it under my shirt. Mora Eldris does everything I need, this video reminded me I need to sharpen it
I have been an advocate of the horizontal or “scout” carry on everything from a multi tool to a hunting knife for as long as I can remember. Alway either had my sheaths custom made, or would modify or make them myself. Why anyone would want something sticking up 5 or so inches in your ribs, and the equivalent into your leg or back side is beyond me. Glad you figured it out! That being said, I will never give up my 940. There are places where fixed blade carry is just not acceptable. And when you want to show off just a bit, there is nobody that knows anything about knives, that doesn’t recognize that beautiful Purple Ti Spacer 😉.
It is a falsehood to apply any real pressure when stropping. Since the leather is a soft surface, if you push hard the leather will actually bend under the pressure and round off the apex, deforming/dulling the edge. You shouldn’t push hard when stropping even with a convex edge, never mind a scandi or a secondary V edge. Push with stones bc they’re flat.
Have carried a buck 110 for 30 years in a sheathe which is horizontal, in a custom made sheath called ezOpen. Which was gifted to me by the owner of EZopen co. at a rest area in north Carolina on my ride back from Florida on my 65 harley. Have always appreciated that gift and the kindness of strangers.
I'm not Biting........I like the concealment of the folding knife, kinda like Open Carry compared to Concealed Weapon the element of surprise is Paramount.... I live near Portland Oregon
A small fixed blade can be easily concealed. I've carried my Esee Izula to weddings, graduations, college campuses, etc and nobody knows unless I want them to. It's all about how you carry it
I ditched the folding knife a long time ago. All of the locking mechanisms fail eventually, even on high-quality knives. I almost lost a finger when the locking mechanism failed on the last folding knife I had. Fixed blade with full hilt is the only knife I'll carry.
Helicon-Tek makes a pouch called the Sere Pouch, that has a slot in back that you can pass a fixed blade in a sheath through. Put a Mora, an SRK, CRKT Biwa in it, just have to see what works for you, and the fixed blade just blends in. Can carry a bunch of EDC stuff as well as your wallet in it. It comes with its own belt, but can be hung off a regular belt or attached to any Molle system. Vertical carry with this pouch. Also pouch can be worn cross body for some folks.
Horizontal appendix carry is for defensive knives that are never used for anything but emergency self defense. You still keep a separate folder for EDC tasks. They're two different tools for two different jobs. One shouldn't replace the other. If you want a good EDC knife that is also a fixed blade, try a neck knife.
Legally? Are you in the US? If so, knives are "arms" and covered under the 2nd Amendment. Though West Coasters keep trying to vote our Rights away... If they keep it up, we will be like the UK and there will be knife collection boxes on the street corners for the "law abiding" to turn in their knives, and so that the criminals won't have to work too hard to find a bunch of knives to steal.
Ive worn a 5-6" fixed blade in the traditional belt knife way for years for edc. yes, in the city, and in 40+ states. This is America. people have worn knives this way for hundreds of years.
I have a multitude of different types of knives in my collection. I've always gravitated to larger knives just for the indestructibility of them. I picked up an ESSE izula 2 a while back, and i can not leave it alone. I've had it on my person or in my backpack since I bought it. I'm looking to get a horizontal carry sheath. I'm not very fond of the included one. At my jewelry store, I also sharpen knives for people. I always recommend buying a strop or making one. I even offer to break off a piece of extra rouge for them if they want. I use two different kinds green and white. Don't ever use red rouge it's very gritty. Thank you for the awesome video my brother in Christ and as always God bless you and your wonderful family.
I have a background in bladed weapons and carry both a folder and a fixed blade. Fixed for defense and folder for everything else. If the fixed hurts when you move around, adjust it. Furthermore a folder doesn't need to be mounted to the body. You can throw it in pocket and go about your day.
90% agreement. Difference is I carry left side with hilt forward. Cross draw with my right hand. I generally carry my old faithful 3 blade folder… 2” clip, 1 ½” sheep foot, 1 ½ “ pen. I have a couple of 2 ¾”-3 ½” fixed blades I carry all the time.
I switched from a benchmade 585 to bradford fixed blades about 2 years ago. The guardian 3.2 is the goldilocks for me, full flat grind in magnacut. Horizontal carry at about 1 o'clock, handle is over my right pocket next to my phone holster. Phone case keeps my shirt from covering the knife so I'm not "concealed" nobody notices it. Lays flat enough that the handle and case don't poke my daughter when carrying her on my hip. I won't go back to a folder now.
I recently read a story about a woman who's old dog got attacked by a pitbull. She had a knife on her and was able to delete the pitbull and save her dog.
Back when I wore an apron all day working in a restaurant kitchen, I started grandma carrying a paring knife rolled in the waste of my apron. You do what works for you.
I started carrying fixed blades daily in 2019 and haven’t looked back. I carry a small leatherman with a pocket clip in my front right pocket. Then a small fixed blade on my left hip belt. I don’t carry a knife appendix since I carry my pew pew there and don’t want to add bulk there. Cody have you heard of Bark River Knives? They sell fantastic fixed blades, family owned business in Michigan. Also great choice with the Wicked Wax & Wicked Clean. Awesome products!
There is a purpose for each. In some places, a fixed blade may be prohibited while an equally sized folder isn’t. A pocket folder may be more suitable for some situations where a fixed blade wouldn’t, think church or business settings.
I horizontal appendix carry a fixed blade every day. I used to neck carry a small fixed blade, but the Bradford Guardian 3 changed everything for me. They’re available in several steels, handle options, and blade profiles. Plus, they’re made in the PNW.
Nice Helko. Remember, it's not the heavy log splitter. You have the heavy universal. I bought the large splitter from your vids thinking it was yours. And I'll tell you, I'm happy you we're wrong. The splitter is incredible. Love the content Cody
Not the only way to go, but a good way to go. Love that you're always refining your loadout. Fixed blades have a fast and guaranteed deployment, and are the more durable choice. Folders do offer a lower profile and some additional portability though. IMO both have a place situationally.
This doesn’t have to be controversial at all. If you want to carry a fixed blade, I’m all for it, especially for homesteading, but you can absolutely carry a belt knife and a folder and they serve different roles. Definitely doesn’t have to replace your 940. Maybe put a finer edge on it and rely on your fixed blade for the heavy stuff. When I’m in the woods, I always have a pair of knives like this.
I carried fixed blades my whole life, now I moved to the 940. It should arrive today... I've been packing the Mach 1 from Puma, Great knife just a tad heavy...
I carry a fixed blade knife and a folding knife in my pocket. The fixed blade does most work, the folding knife is for everything else. The "difficult" to get to thing is completely stupid. That's because you're not carrying the right knife. I carry a pistol @ 3 o' clock and a smaller fixed blade behind the pistol at about the 4 o' clock position. I do this every day! I do EVERYTHING with my pistol and knives on me and half the time, I don't even feel it. If it's uncomfortable and hard to access, you're doing it wrong or carrying the wrong tools. The fixed knife is a knife you can get dirty and not worry about it. The folding knife I keep CLEAN! This is in case I need it for medical or eating purposes.
You're killing me Cody. We saved for 6 months and my wife just bought me the 940 Osborne with the green aluminum handle for my birthday this week. Now it's been demoted to non EDC. 😢
They look nice BUT if you love them your in for a treat if you discover the literal THOUSANDS of other custom fixed blades that have an even nicer finish and fit not to mention the slew of super steels...
As I’ve gotten older I’ve found the Milwaukee Fastback 48-22-1505 is as handy as it gets for day to day carry. The razor is replaceable and always sharp. I’m always using the #2 Phillips and flathead screwdriver to tighten something or open the battery compartment on my kids toys. Perhaps it’s the confidence that comes from being an East coast man but I just don’t feel the need to carry a fixed blade unless I’m in the woods 😆 All joking aside Cody, I believe if you gave it a try you would really enjoy it. Keep up the great work!
Good review on knives - the sharpening with the leather strop looks like a great way to keep knives sharp. What I like about the leather strop - it doesn't grind the blades down - as found with the majority of knife sharpening systems. Thanks for sharing this sharpening system !
As a heavy equipment mechanic who works in a building where I’m not even supposed to carry a knife, I’ll stick with a folder. Benchmade Griptillian, spyderco para, or a spyderco tenacious. Pair that with a microtech otf for cool factor and a leatherman wave for utility. Fixed blades are just too clumsy for edc
That EDC SureFire Flashlight he’s suggesting is the best. Since Wranglerstar recommended it years ago. I purchased one. Believe me, it is EDC perfection. Thank you, Wranglerstar for all you do. -Mike An East Coast Man
In my city you can carry a fixed blade as long as it isn’t visible. I’ve carried a small fixed blade for years now in a custom horizontal leather sheath on my left hip. It gets used often. At the moment it’s a cold steel mini pendleton. The best part is how much easier it is to keep clean and maintain than a folder.
Recommendation: of right handed, carrying a fixed horizontal, on the left side of your belt buckle with the handle pointing towards your center. This way you can easily draw with your right hand and still draw it with your left hand as well.
I’ve considered a fixed blade but the ease and practicality of a replaceable folding box cutter blade is my go to. I hardly use it, and have the high style pockets on my jeans rather than the slant cut you have, so I never lose it due to the clip. So the small razor blade is good enough and don’t have to create a new routine of sharpening every week, just change the blade when it won’t cut.

😂
Well i wasnt….
Hoooooboy hes changing knives again. This too will pass.

Unfortunately in the UK 🇬🇧 we are so restricted to what we can carry.
All I carry on a daily basis is a Swiss Army knife attached to my belt.
Can’t even do that here in Australia.
@@ScottMcBlane
Wow Scott, that’s 🤪🤪

The 940 will be in your pocket long after those fixed blades have been discarded in a drawer.
You don’t need to use pressure when stropping. You let the blade use its weight.
I bought a 940 because of you and I still carry one with me today everyday
So, a big vertical knife is stupid but a big horizontal one isn’t?
I'm pretty sure that's because the other guy's an a$h0le, but you're super cool. Especially with your mean looking knife strapped all special.
Bro exactly. Maybe if you have a shirt over it but front scout carry is extremely doichie
Why would I care what knife you carry or what knife you think I should carry. That’s kind of a personal decision.
Why would you take the time to watch and comment if you weren’t interested? 😂
people dont like benchmade because of their ideas on guns
You do know those were seized pew pews that were bound for destruction, right? Benchmade was asked by the local law enforcement to help since they have the tools to do the job. Benchmade actually supported pro 2A candidates. I am not slhilling for them, as I refuse to buy any more of their way overpriced knives. This anti 2A stuff is just fabricated and the truth should be known.
Are they anti?
I'm transported back to those boyhood days at the five-and-dime, standing in front of the display case of pocket knives, coveting them all. My first pocket knife was a Kamp King.
That was also my first knife. Just came across it going through some things and it really brought back some memories.
Jason has such excellent taste in blades. A true aficionado of the blade and a fine gentleman.
You do you and I do me. Still carrying a folding stainless steel Army Surplus vintage 1967 Vietnam issue version of a boyscout pocket knife. Was tricky to sharpen untill diamond shapers came on the market.😊
The Bradford guardian 3 fits me well for my small fixed blade.
My knife as well
I carry my Bradford USA Guardian 3 Full flat grind in CPM 3V steel as my daily . I carry it in a kydex sheath with clips in my right front pocket . I seem to have lost all interest in folding knives, even my Strider SnG's .
@@kevinbaughman4207 I Also have the kydex sheath but i bounce between scout carry or ulti clip in my pocket.
What happened to Spyderco. You disavowed benchmade a couple years ago...was that a paid promotion or what?
So if you carry your EDC pistol appendix, where would you then wear the knife?
- Paul.
Couldn't agree more!
@lesterblade Thanks!, for the life of me, i just dont get it, the 940. Way over priced, extremely underwhelming features, and the ridiculous "fan boy" following. No knife snob here, but i absolutely expect, to get what i pay for.
@@paultrujillo9923if you’re not using it you definitely won’t get what you paid sitting in a drawer! Use the tool and then send it back if it fails.
@inssy2588 that's a very good point. But I think, I'll gift it to someone, someday, so that it goes to a "good home". They can then use it, as they see fit, and I can be ignorantly happy, that it's being used as a tool should be used.
@@paultrujillo9923 well that works even better. Good on you sir
Only snow flakes, would be offended. People’s taste change. I got a 940 years ago. I don’t regret it at all.
I neck carry a Mora Eldris, very similar length to that second knife. I really love neck carry. Looks like nothing, people ask me all the time what it is. When it's not appropriate I tuck it under my shirt. Mora Eldris does everything I need, this video reminded me I need to sharpen it
Lost it found it In pants after fire fighting... lost it found it clipped on a metal shelf or something... I'm sure there were more I can't remember
I'll stick with the TDI in a NSR horizontal sheath or the MFCEO.
It's all about how you carry it
To anyone new to stropping.. Don't use too much pressure when you strop, it will roll the edge. Firm is fine, but don't bear down on it.
You said carrying a fixed blade was odd and only odd people carry them.....then take out 2 fixed blades and said you will not go back to folders...lol
I can legally carry a folding knife concealed but a fixed blade has to be open carried. Im not a pirate.
full sabre it is then.
In Pennsylvania you have to have a good reason for caring a fixed blade. In the open and it has to be hunting trapping or your job.

Same I love my izula 2 it's like the cheaper version of his knife
I have a fix blade nessmuk knife. can literally use it for anything.
I have a background in bladed weapons and carry both a folder and a fixed blade. Fixed for defense and folder for everything else. If the fixed hurts when you move around, adjust it.
Furthermore a folder doesn't need to be mounted to the body. You can throw it in pocket and go about your day.
Not gonna add any weird to your haunt when your already double wristing two time pieces

Plus, they’re made in the PNW.
probably meant 223 not lr for that hole in the knife i could be wrong, but i believe 22lr uses a paste and not powder, which is why it burns so dirty.
Nice Helko. Remember, it's not the heavy log splitter. You have the heavy universal. I bought the large splitter from your vids thinking it was yours. And I'll tell you, I'm happy you we're wrong. The splitter is incredible. Love the content Cody
Mora 511 isn’t a bad carry and is certainly not threatening. 940 is cream of the crop.
@maximumnewbage hit the nail on the head. Anyone with a job, not in the trades or service industry needs a folder. Period
Good points. Yeah, but I'm not always wearing a belt. I almost always have a pocket. I'm pretty stuck on the Ontario RAT Model One.
My knife doesn't say abadon on the blade. It says ICXC NIKA, You get what you pay for.

Perhaps it’s the confidence that comes from being an East coast man but I just don’t feel the need to carry a fixed blade unless I’m in the woods 😆
All joking aside Cody, I believe if you gave it a try you would really enjoy it. Keep up the great work!

Not mad at all. Started carrying a fixed blade about 4 months ago, ditched the folder, and so far, so good.
Good review on knives - the sharpening with the leather strop looks like a great way to keep knives sharp.
What I like about the leather strop - it doesn't grind the blades down - as found with the majority of knife sharpening
systems. Thanks for sharing this sharpening system !
LOL I don't know... I love my original 940, but that new burnt copper, magnacut Osbourne is calling my name :)

Foxfire is a nice name. I’ve got the books….could build a civilization with them
You don't put a lot of pressure when you strop the blade. If you do it will round the edge vs. if you put lighter pressure on it when stropping
I have to carry what I can at the time, I love Abaddon and hope Abaddon loves some of us that try to avoid such judgments.
why hope when you can be certain, repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ,
Thank you Jesus!
