- Hi guys,
In this video I replace the timing belt on a 2011 VW T5 2.0 TDI.
The engine code on this van is CAAB. So other engines may differ in procedure. I advise looking through a workshop manual for specific engines.
Tools required:
•17mm socket
•Breaker bar
•Jack
•Axle stands
•Pic
•Hose clamp pliers
•Ratchet
•Extensions
•10mm socket
•Flathead screwdriver
•16mm socket
•18mm socket
•16 mm spanner
•Offset 19mm spanner
•Multispline m10
•Prybar
• 19mm 12 sided socket
•8mm Allen key
•15 mm spanner
•13mm socket
•Torque wrench
• Timing tools
Optional:
•Impact gun
• Lift
•Battery ratchet
I advise checking torque setting and filling quantities before. It is important that all bolts are tightened correctly because if not it could cause damage to the car or an accident. Also, with some bolts they are torque to yield which should be replaced so be careful if reusing bolts as they can snap.
This video is a guide on how to carry out the task and does not guarantee the result. It is recommended that a skilled technician carry’s out work on vehicles to ensure for best results.
I hope this video helps.

Just to confirm this is brilliant having used it as a guide whilst changing my cambelt today.
One thing that I did notice however was that you didn’t show the lower cam cover going back on before refitting the engine mount 😉
Thanks again - so very helpful.
Thanks for this video, it helped me a lot today when i replaced my belt. Saved a LOT of money by doing it myself.
Good video GM . Would you consider putting a narrative on the process instead of the music.?..Not sure if you have ever seen “ Heavy Recovery with Steve” on you tube. He is really good at explaining his methods when recovering heavy goods vehicles that have broken down. He hooks his followers in by his professional explanation. Just a thought😊
I have thought about it but would take more time and confidence 😂
Very helpful and really appreciated. Thanks 👍
Glad it was helpful!
VW ❤️💪💪💪
Nice.
Thanks!
Great video, just about to have a go with mine. Did you change the studs for new ones, what thread lock did you use and is it ok to torque up bolts that had already been torqued before i.e. the engine mount ones?
Thankyou. I didn’t change the studs as they were okay. I used loctite. And ideally you should replace the stretch bolts but they are okay to reuse, just be careful when tightening them as they can snap. Hope all goes well when you have a go
doing my timing belt at the minute and I was thinking I just leave the tensioner stud alone but went I took nut off tensioner stud was loose 😳 took stud off by hand 😮 . and there was no aluminum filings coming out with stud anyway I put new stud in and make sure it coming out straight and bit of loctite . timing belt was last done 100.000miles ago this probably be last belt as be due again 300.000 miles . water pump was leaking very very tiny might put small bit sealant on new one going in morning
@@greasemonkey6159 Which loctite do you use. Have looked and there's quite a few different numbers/codes, blue or red?
I used the blue one
Great video as I too have a 2.0 tdi. Can you put a link to where you got the cam locking tools from? That would be of help. Thank you sir.
Thankyou. I ordered the locking tools off of eBay and they were perfect.

That’s super-helpful; thanks for taking the time to share 👍
Looking at the manual there’s 2 types of tensioner used. I think you’ve swapped out one type for the other
I asked this question to the parts store that I purchased the parts from and they said that this was the correct kit for the engine. But it’s always a good idea to double check 👍
How long did it take??? VW wants 2000 aus dollars to do it
About 4 hours with filming it. I got quoted £650 for the job
@@greasemonkey6159 how lucky you are to live in UK. Here in Australia any thing to do with VW we get rip off big time.
