For anyone who is interested; When Tiffen created Pro Mist Filters they created the different strengths in order to provide a consistent level of filtration across the range of focal length lenses because the filtration effect increases as the focal length of the lens becomes more telephoto. A 1/4 pro mist (black or white) will be much stronger on a 85mm lens than it will be on a 25mm lens. A common formula for using Pro Mist Filters is 1/2 Promist for 18mm and wider, the 1/4 Pro Mist for 25mm - 35mm lenses, and 1/8 for 50mm and above. I hope this is information is useful.
@@BrookedeRosa I would use the 1/4 Pro Mist for that. But as long as it's a lighter filter for any lens longer than 50mm and a heavier filter for any lens wider than 35mm that's what's most important if the goal is to maintain a consistent level of filtration from image to image.
I was torn apart for few days if I should take both or only 1/8 for my new 35mm lens and I got only the 1/8. Just got it in my hands and still decided to watch some more reviews and now your comment got me little upset I didn't purchased both, haha but we'll see how it will works :))
New sub! I’m going to test the Tiffen 1/2 with the Hollywood black magic 1/2. I want it mostly for my talking head videos because my Sony 6600 has that sharp digital look to it. I’m old, but not as old as Sony makes me look 😂
Black Pro Mist is always a solid choice. Maybe check out my videos on the Soft Fx and especially the Black Diffusion line if softening skin is your main priority.
"I am so confused on getting the 1/8 or 1/4, I have a gh5 and a bmpcc 4k, I think 1/4 is to strong for the bmpcc4k and the 1/8 is too subtle to the gh5" please help me here,
Is there any way to get a Tiffen Black ProMist filter on an Irix 15mm 2.4 with a 95mm filter thread to keep a small profile of the setup? Tiffen here don't sell the size 95mm unfortunately... The Irix also has a rear gel filter holde however, so is it possible to use that slot instead maybe? To somehow cut a small filter to size and have it at the rear of the Irix? I will also use a Speedbooster and is there alternatively a possibility to put a filter in there somehow instead? I wish to keep a small profile to my camera setup with a wide angle lens like this but still have a Tiffen Black ProMist filter on it. Any thoughts?
It was all shot on the Sony RX-10 ll which comes with a fixed zoom lens. So everything you see in this video was shot on the same lens at mostly F2.8 at various focal lengths. Since the camera has a camcorder sized censor you have to zoom in quite a lot to get that shallow depth of field you can see in the shots you are referring to. I'm pretty sure I only used the BPM 1/4 for these shots. That's really all I can tell you...
Amazing look with rx10. I was wondering how it will be look like my z90 with bpm filter and your works helps me a lot. Can i ask what picture profile did you use and how did you color graded it?
Thanks. I mostly filmed in the default Slog 2 profile for most shots. Some night scenes were filmed in Cine 2 I think. I mostly used a generic m31 LUT for grading and just did some basic contrast changes. Its orange/teal look makes almost everything look good. Some shots at the river in the beginning were graded with an "Alexa Look" Phantom LUT. Hope that helps :)
it looks like the black version retains a little more contrast and virtually the same halation, maybe slightly reduced. But at 1/8 strength it's probably not noticeable.

Great comparisons and beautiful shots thank you
Great video!! What do you think about the ‘warm’ filter version ? Tks.
Great review and explanation of the differences! P.S. Your english is perfect 🤟🏼
I have 3 ProMist. I friend gave them to me. I haven't used them yet, I need to buy an adapter. So far the 1/4 looks like something I could use.
Great, thanks for the comparison!

Great Video. Super Helpful. especially the DIY filter lol
Would the 1/4 black pro mist be great for beauty make up tutorial in your opinion?
Yes

Do these filters screw on top of other filter like vairiable NDs?
Yes. But you should always put on the diffusion filter first to get the particles as close to your sensor as possible.

I bought the regular 1/8 Pro Mist filter instead of the 1/8 Black Pro Mist filter, will there be a huge difference?
