Can you discuss the differences between Black Glimmerglass as opposed to OG Glimmerglass? The diffusion triangle is horrible as a reference (It shows Black Pro Mist leaning further from contrast reduction than Black Satin LOL) so I really have nothing to go on. Do you get more skin smoothing then from Glimmerglass and Black Glimmerglass than Black Satin? (The triangle says you do not...) and how would you compare smoothness between Glimmerglass & Black Glimmerglass? What strength do you use? Lots of very useful information could be elucidated here as you've used them all
David, thanks for introducing me to the Black Satin 3. I kept it when I switched from Canon M50 to iPhone 12 Pro Max for interviews, mostly with women artists. I really like the look. Thanks for explaining the difference - I'll probably sell the 77mm Black Satin and buy smaller Black Satin and Glimmerglass. The Black Satin will be for music and other events where a little more dramatic look will be nice; the Glimmerglass will be for the interviews. Love your improved set design.
Great thinking there! Diffusion filters I think are extremely helpful since the sensors and lenses are so sharp these days, it’s a artistic tool we can use when needed 🙏🙌
Thanks for this! I just bought my first matte box and I haven't decided on what filters I want to start my (eventual) collection with. That Glimmerglass looks beautiful.
Congrats on the matte box! Glimmerglass definitely has a very clean and polished look to it and depending on how strong you want the effect to be you could have a 1/4 for subtle effects and a 1 for stronger effects
Thanks for the comparison..i want to get a glimmerglass filter to reduce the sharpness of the image and get some highlight defusion. i'm just not sure about the strength. I was thinking to get a 1 but then saw that you use a 1/2 strength. can you recommend one or the other for my use case? thank you!(:
@@atdavidlee so a black satin 2 (currently the only one not on backorder) would be something similar to a black glimmerglass 1/2 perhaps? And a black satin 1 like a 1/4 black glimmer? I mean roughly. Is that both in terms of strenght of softening and strenght of bloom would you say?
Great content. If you don’t mind share, what do you use for the talking head shot you are doing in this video. I have been struggling to get this answer. Thanks in advance for any help.
@@atdavidlee Thanks Brother. ? Would the Glimmer Glass 1 work in your Studio setting or would I get some strange artifacts? Or would 1/4 for a cleaner look, I do not want crazy Bloom in the Studio. BTW Thank You for the insight this is a Unicorn 🦄 Topic.. hard to find the answer you seek 😂
@@atdavidlee 😂. Thanks, I like the look of the Glimmer Glass 1. I will try that one, hopefully it’s not too much as I do most of my content like your talk head shots. Otherwise I will have to buy the 1/4 for more everyday work… I wanted to get the best general use level.
@@atdavidlee I'm confused - pro mist is rated in 1/4, 1/8 etc. Are those equivalent to glimmerglass 1, 3, 5 somehow? I'd like the equivalent "strength" of black pro mist 1/8.
I am filming with a camera that doesn't have an anti-aliasing filter on the sensor. I am interested to see if a diffusion filter would help a little bit to make the details more softer so there is less aliasing problems. Wich one do you suggest? and are there more cheapers filters that also does the job?
Good question! To help with aliasing a diffusion filter might not help all too much unless you went really heavy with the intensity. You’d probably want to try softening the image in post or use a lens that isn’t sharp to help more
Thanks for the review. However, since I already have a Tiffen Black Pro Mist #1, I decided to buy a Tiffen Black Pro Mist #3 soft focus filter instead.
Thank you for your grat video. Have you any experience with using simultaneously diffusion filter and ND filter (variable ND filter) ? Isn't there any negative optical collision?
You’ll get reflections when you stack filters like that at least with screw on filters. Nothing you can really do unless you invest in a matte box and go with 4x5.65 filters
Neither wash out the image which is why I like them, only promist will milk out the image. The other two will increase highlight bloom and contrast levels the denser you go
Can you use the tiffen black satin 1 or glimmerglass 1 as kind of always on filter? Im pretty new into filters, just have the black pro mist 1/4 because its almost the only one you dont need to Import ( im from europe). The blooming is often outside to strong with the 1/4 . Not sure how hard the blooming is with the other ones . The black satin 1 seems really nice but im not sure if its already to strong.
Thanks for the question! As far as blooming strength I’d say black pro mist 1/4 is about the same strength as Glimmerglass 1. I’d recommend a 1/4 Glimmerglass to get the benefits with just subtle blooming. Black satin is really nice at a level 1 and even a 1/2 depending on the focal length. Unfortunately with filters you either have to screw them on or use a matte box, there are lenses that do bloom ever so slightly but that’s a whole other cost in itself. Haha that video was definitely a memorable one for me!
@@atdavidlee Thanks so much for the Answer. Then i just need to decide now between Glimmerglas 1/4 and Black Satin 1 ;) But leaning towards Black Satin 1 i think, hoping its not to gritty at that strength. Filming with a Sony a73 and sigma 24-70 and sony 35 1.8 . both pretty digital looking out of cam and the sigma is also very sharp.
I own sigma glass too and they can be very sharp especially on the Sony cameras, you can’t go wrong with either diffusion I still use both frequently but the 1/4 Glimmerglass I’d highly look into 👍
Nice comparison on these, I've got the glimmerglass on order the IRND glimmerglass 0.9 and 1.2, just waiting for them to come. They had a sale and each glass was only $138 each so jumped on it as soon as I saw it since 4x5 filters are expensive and thats why I avoided but always wanted them.

Great explanation and clever analogy with grain - thanks a lot! Very helpful. Do you know if the circular Glimmer glass filter has any differences in it's look compared to the 4x5 Black Glimmer glass? It seems like there's no circular Black Glimmer Glass filter on the market.
For some reason tiffen never made a black Glimmerglass in circular size 🤷🏻♂️, but the differences from what I’ve seen are that regular Glimmerglass won’t give you lifted contrast compared to the black version
@@atdavidlee Thank you for the reply! In your opinion, would circular Black Satin preserve the shadows better then circular Glimmer Glass of a similar strength?

You didn't give filter strengths. You didn't give focal lengths (read that the filtration increases with focal length, considerably). You didn't even shoot the same scenes or light the same. Quite bizarre choices for someone so versed in cine. Decidedly low-effort.
