The moment the grinch leak was seemingly confirmed with Ken and then instantly deconfirmed with Incineroar was insanely cool and one of my favourite moments of the Ultimate buildup
The funniest part about all of these leaks is that basically nobody seemed to cared about them until official reveals and, well, that's understandable, I can t count how many fake leaks one has ever encountered.

For every 1 real leak, there are 100's or even 1000's of fake leaks. It honestly makes sence on why most of the real leaks only become very popular AFTER the big reveal. Another thing is that Nintendo is getting better at hiding things, so the amount of real leaks start to decrease. I wouldn't be surprised if one day in the *far* future you would need a hacker that has skills comparable to that of hackers who can hack classified government information.
The Grinch Leak was the best fake ever even to this day, it’s going to be 3 Year Anniversary of that leak and now it all comes full circle with this supposed Kingdom Hearts Music Leak getting people discussing Sora everywhere.
The Grinch leak 3rd anniversary kinda pass already, on September 28 a 4chan post with a ganonchad image said banjo, isaac, chorus kid, shadow, geno, mach rider, and ken are in and steve/pokemon will not.

I don't know what's funnier about the Ganondorf in Smash 4 thing: the fact that they took down the video and reuploaded it, or the fact that Smash fans caught Ganondorf in a tiny circle
One key thing about the Roy/Ryu leak was that the entire update, the classic mode videos, and soon all 3 characters and stages, were completely playable just one day before the characters were revealed and released. It was a huge day for smash fans and I can imagine the shock of the entire DLC team.

Leaks are definitely unfun. But it’s so hard to avoid them and you sometimes can’t.. resist feeling sceptical
I personally find them fun when there are conflicting ones - like how Vergeben and Grinch contradicted, so some people were team grinch and some were team vergeben. Definitely amped up the stakes.
Other than that, yea they’re boring. The Roy/Ryu one in particular really killed the vibe.

Small fix: Sakurai's POTD for Smash 4 Wii U & 3DS was on Miiverse, not Twitter.
Don't forget that Lucina's and Robin's trailer also both deconfirmed Chrom, who was also 'leaked' to join the cast, but *more importantly* it was the also the confirmation that Captain Falcon was coming back. Most of the returning cast had already been announced, and we were Falcon-less until this beautiful reveal
Even with all the Smash leaks that have happened throughout the years, I'm just glad we won't have people on 4chan or Reddit claiming that they know who the next DLC Fighter is for Smash Ultimate anymore... until the next Smash game comes out whenever that is.

Leaks are fun to look back into honestly, a shout out to my favorite leak is the 4chan post that literally just dropped a gif of King k rool dancing with Simon on a cliff as the gif foreground not long before their reveal.
It's so specific and the gif is so good
The pic-of-the-day during Smash 4's development cycle was on Miiverse, not Twitter.
Also, Pakkun is the Japanese name for Piranha Plant, so it's not that much of a stretch.
I remember when Roy and Ryu's Classic Mode endings got leaked days before their reveal. That fucking sucked. XD

Sora had the KH music stuff
I saved Byleth for last since it’s less known. Around a week before Byleth was revealed a 4chan leak claimed there’d be a FE3H DLC pack but it wouldn’t include a character. It did, however, correctly guess the stage and alts of Byleth, albeit claimed the alts were costumes

Vergeben actually addressed the Master Chief discrepancy. Apparently one of his oldest sources (that he has since cut ties with) was giving him spotty information that was more often wrong than not.
Here's the snippet on Master Chief:
"On the topic of Smash DLC, I reserve my right to not comment on that at the moment anyway. Clearly Master Chief was not the next character and it was Kazuya. The source that I split with was certain it was him after I checked with them who it was. I couldn't get back with my main source in time and they actually never wound up hearing who it was anyway. So I hedged my bets and lost. That's on me. I should have remained silent."
Vergeven is always right! If not it’s his sources fault.
I think at this point it's obvious that he has actual credible sources that he's getting his info from. But I think Nintendo are smarter this time around.
(They literay had Xander Mobus record lines for over a hundred diffent anouncer lines for over a hundred potential fighters all from reasonable to crazy just so he couldn't pin down the roster)
It's obvious that Nintendo was spreading fake info just to throw leakers off. And the Joker reveal not being predicted by anybody is evidence of this. Vergeben was a victim of the fact that had to live up to being a credible source forced to guess or pick out from potentially wrong info given out by Nintendo.
Also remember him claiming he knew about Richter and Plant despite not saying anything after their reveal and said no new DK reps, and pretty much all the DLC leaks he put out was always after someone else leaked it, like if I remember Verge was against Banjo until Shinobu said something

I would like to add that people didn't just retroactively associate Joker with jack because it sounds similar. But also because Jack Frost is an enemy in the Persona en Shin Megami Tensei series and is pretty much Atlas's mascot

There is one missed leak. Several months before the Sans mii costume was released, Nintendo took down a fan made Megalovania x Ultimate remix off TH-cam.
Alrighr but It was fan-made so no one would really suspect Megolavania would become a song
That wasn't really a proper leak Nintendo took down a handful of fan remixes like that, including Fortnite and Mario RPG ones
Another leak you should post in a future update of this video is the Disney leak. Apparently a post on 4chan back in July stated that the team at Sora Ltd. had finalized a deal with Disney to use some of their music for an upcoming project, which would be revealed later in the fall.
While this doesn’t necessarily point to Sora, the post did drop a date for the supposed reveal. Once Nintendo revealed their September direct, a lot of people dismissed this leak because the post said October 5 was the presentation date.
Well, once the direct revealed that a Smash-specific presentation will have its own date, that being October 5th, I can assume so many people collectively shat their pants. A partnership with Disney can only mean one thing…
Everyone latches on to Vergeben's leaks, but he said for months was that Steve would be in the base game, then said it would just be a stage, then said Minecraft would be involved "somehow," then said he would be early DLC, and then said he'd be in Fighters Pass 2, and everyone said "OH MY GOD HE DID IT AGAIN, HOW DOES HE DO IT?!!" He either had unreliable sources, or guessed, and everyone ate it up.
He got plenty right, but was also so consistently incorrect that I don't know why he's still considered "THE" main source for Smash leaks.
And now with the master chief thing being false, hard not to believe he was just making guesses lol

23:55 So Packun was Piranha Plant (roughly the Japanese name of it), Jack was Joker (Jack Frost being the mascot of Megami Tensei, Persona being a sub-series of that), and Brave probably the 'brave heroes'. The current leak is Sora, which we'll soon see whether or not it's actually true. I'm about 50/50 right now.

I haven't looked at a leak since Pokémon Sun and Moon. Not like it matters since we were told pretty much everything about that game anyways, but Smash Ultimate and Pokémon SwSh, and the new upcoming ones were all really fun to watch progress naturally.
...Except maybe the fact that most of the Smash DLC was disappointing, but that's just a me problem.

It made me so sad seeing Terry not getting as much hype as he should have got during the time. Terry is one of the coolest, most iconic fighting game characters and I’m shocked more people don’t know the character at least. Your missing out on some of the best fighting games, best characters, and best music ever in videogames if you haven’t checked out KOF and Fatal Fury. He is still the best DLC character and I will stand by that. He got the most love from the devs.

Whenever a character is leaked I start hoping that character DOESN'T get announced because if they do there's just no surprise, especially with there only being one character left. People are so impatient that they'll ruin the fun for everyone including themselves just to know who the character is.
Imagine hoping a leak isn't true because of the "ruined suprise" and not because you don't want that character

That last leak really needs to be a reality check for some people out there, it's easy when they are millions of people predicting wild rosters to have one predict everything accurately, it doesn't make it true in any way though.
I’d like to add that Ryu’s Classic Mode ending reel was leaked the day before his reveal, ruining that surprise further than it already was. I don’t recall if Roy’s ending was leaked too it might’ve been but not sure.
Some things that you missed:
Palutena was leaked in January 2014. People claim it was fake, but it was very clearly real. There were background elements of Battlefield that had not been seen yet that matched up with the ones in the final game.
Roy and Ryu weren't just leaked in April, but completely playable with hacked games the day prior to the E3 Smash Presentation.
Might as well add Sora to that list

It's funny, I'm a big Smash fan and I've usually been up to date with new information coming out, but not leaks. The only leak that I ever heard about as it was happening was the fake Grinch leak, due to how big it got. Aside from that, I always avoid spoiling myself with leaks.

Surprise you didn't know this. Verge said he had to cut off his source who said about Chief since the source had been wrong for over a year. He doesn't believe in Chief since before he even posted about it there was plenty of other people saying Chief hours before he did reported by PapaGeno which btw PapaGeno did got a source about Banjo in Oct 2018 which was interesting.

i must have lucked the hell out. when SSB4 and SSBU were all the buzz online, I didn't hear anything about any of the major leaks. i never even heard about the ESRB or Ryu leaks until many years later. maybe I just knew when to hide under a rock when that stuff came around I guess lol

Well that was a suprise, at 16:55 that’s me in the background. I was at E3 that year and I still have all of the goods I got at the booths. Especially the stuff from the Smash booth; I have a flag/towel I can’t decide which due to the material, a pin, and most importantly I have a Smash medal. I even still have that shirt I was wearing which I bought upstairs at a booth which sold them, I got it in the wrong size and it felt uncomfortable but it’s a little too late to be complaining about that.
I remember E3 that year so vividly, I even won the raffle the SEGA booth was holding for the SEGA Genesis collection, which I still have by the way since they gave it to me for free. I have the Persona bag and a few other misc items, but I mainly went there for Smash. I played the demos of DBZF and another game but I can’t remember it all that well since it didn’t leave much of an impression on me. But I definitely remember the Smash fighter items in those cases, like Yoshi’s egg, DK’s tie, Mario’s hat, Peach’s crown, etc. Oh and for reference, the person standing next to me is my dad since he came with me, I would have gone myself but I was just barely 18 and I doubt I could have handled myself well out there all by myself. Even if I live in Cali, it’s still quite a ways away from where I live to LA.
Anyway that just gave me a spook, I didn’t realize that someone took my picture. I just thought I should comment on it, since it felt strange. Honestly 2018 really doesn’t feel like it was all that long ago. But yet when you think about it, it has been 3 years or so... Time sure flies huh. I doubt the me from back then could ever have imagined that I’d be in the situation I’m in now. Let alone all of what’s happened in between then and now. If nothing else all of this has taught me just how important the people, placed, and things you take for granted are. Especially since I’ve lost so much since then, while certainly I’ve gained a lot too, it’s still a bit haunting seeing something that feels so close yet so far away. An experience that you lived which you would give anything to live again, but you can’t...
Sorry for the somber mood, just a little emotional seeing that y’know. A lot these emotions I can’t quite describe, but I feel them all the same. Anyway I can’t wait for Sora, he seems fun to play. Hopefully my computer is done being fixed before he comes out, I have a few things planned now that the final roster has been revealed and I can’t do them without it. Anyway have a nice day, and thank you for showing me something I hadn’t seen in a long time, it was a pleasant surprise.
Another upside to the SNK copyright leaking is that SNK fans had an opportunity to speculate which character it would be, that's extra buzz for the game.

I'm so glad you talked about the Ninka Kiwi leak from Smashboards. Nobody remembers it, especially since it was completely overshadowed by the ESRB one, however I remember it vividly, it came way before that and from a credible user in the old thread devoted to discuss and deconfirm fake leaks.
Also, at first it only stated that Bowser Jr was in a car of some sort, only after he corrected the info with the koopa clown car, so I remember people speculating it was a go kart from Mario Kart ahah. Also I remember it describing Duck Hunt as a trio of the dog, the duck and the hunter offscreen and people were trying to understand what did that mean.
Also I remember it deconfirmed popular characters like Ridley and Mewtwo.
To be honest, as much as I loved the idea of Duck Hunt, I really wished it was fake but alas 😂
To be fair with Duck Hunt and Bowser Jr., their reveal trailers also came out after the 3DS version was released, so their trailers were always going to be met with less excitement.
Which was such a dumb move too. Oooh, here's the reveal of these characters that...you already have been playing in the game.
