7:30 Black Yoshi did have an origin for its inspiration. In Yoshi’s Story 64,you could play as an unlockable Black Yoshi which could eat black-colored shy guys and other poisonous objects without receiving damage,unlike the rest of the Yoshis. There was also a white-colored Yoshi who had different attributes as well.
Not to mention, there was also a black Yoshi in Yoshi’s Island (on the DS version anyway)

9:28 the reason why the party hat was replaced with the swimmer's goggles is because Pichu was cut from Brawl... and putting Pichu's old swimmer goggles alt on Pikachu implies he got enough affection from his trainer to evolve :')
There was even a fan theory back in the day that Smash 64 and Melee Pikachu left, and Pichu evolved to replace him, and not just the goggles costume, but all of them, with the primary evidence (as far as I remember) being that Melee Pikachu couldn't wall jump, but Pichu could, and Pikachu was able to wall jump from Brawl onward.

The “rejected” Meta Knight costume was more so an evolution, both designs seem to be based on Galacta Knight, but the second version does lean more heavily into it.

Why didn't they replace another Yoshi with the crafted Yoshi of the same color, then each color would have been in the game and everyone would be happy.
Anoter could addition would have been replacing a Yoshi with their Wooly World version.

That Meta Knight change was to more closely resemble Galacta Knight.

There was also a Dark Meta Knight colour which later was changed to include the scar on the side of the mask in Ultimate.

I still remember playing Smash 4 with my friend, and I was using black Yoshi, and he was absolutely tripping... he was like “why is Yoshi throwing soccer balls??? This makes no sense!!!” and it distracted him so much that I easily beat him. Then I told him they were eggs with black spots (because the spots are the same color as his skin) and we were both just dying of laughter. Needless to say, I was heartbroken when I first saw that ⚽️ Yoshi was gone from Smash Ultimate. 😢
I'm mad because they removed the jigglypuff alt with green eyes which is its shiny they could've kept that with another hat like the flower.

I remember playing the pre release ultimate and noticing that Ridley lost 2 skins for the metal variants and it had me theorize that we would have unlockable skins in ultimate. Such a missed opportunity.
I’m pretty sure they just didn’t want people to be able to use the costume in the demo and instead put the colors to represent the costume. Ridley’s Meta costume was already shown back when he was revealed. It’s weird since Mario’s, Link’s, Cloud’s, and Bayonetta’s costumes were in the demo. They probably did it cause Ridley was a newcomer unlike the others.

I think Pikachu got the swimmer goggles in Brawl because it's a popular theory that Brawl's Pikachu is an evolved Pichu from Melee.

Slight correction on Ganondorf, his melee look is actually lifted straight from the Spaceworld 2000 tech demo that featured Links vs Ganondorf in a sword fight and Ganondorf even uses the same sword in his win animations and would later be given that sword for his smash attacks in Ultimate.
I actually like the idea of characters with alts from other games (i.e Jigglypuff with peach's crown) cause I feel it adds to the crossover. Characters having an item that they got from another series.
Doc’s red outfit in melee was more pink then red, tho later on they were split to both a solid red and pink alt. In 4 and ultimate

I really miss that white Wolf alt, it made me think of Speed racer! I think it's worth pointing out how in Melee, the daisy alt was a true costume, adding the flower motif and alternate glove/waist models whereas in brawl and 4 it was only a recolor :(
Boy Robin's changed too, his blue and green alts have weird grayish hair now and the white mage look has brown hair instead of true black, and yellow girl Robin's hair is similarly grungy looking, I think they all looked so much better in 4 😭 I miss the old green kirby too I don't like the brown/orange shoes, and red marth having a matching red tiara! I'm also pretty sure the differences to fire luigi is because the original alt was based on his sprite from super mario bros!

9:25 the reason they replaced the hat with e goggles was to honor pichu, who had the goggles skin in melee, but who was cut from brawl
The light blue Link from Smash 64 makes sense as a cut. It was a throwback to the Blue Ring from Zelda 1, which sadly a lot of younger players wouldn't get. Replacing it with a BOTW outfit made a lot of sense.
NGL I like the aesthetics of the old black tunic Link. It contrasts with his light skin and hair well.
This honestly still wants me to think that idea of Smash Brothers Ultimate having a customizable alternate costume system in which you can create 8 more palette swaps so you can put in the fire mario alt..or that pikachu with the top hat for some reason. Just adding more variety.

17:18 Actually, Marth does have quite a few changes. The white alt gradually looked less like Leif from Thracia 776, Marth's sixth alt in Brawl that was a reference to his sprite from the NES game got changed to an all blue alt in Smash 4, and he had a gold alt that was changed to look like Roy's gold alt from Melee in Smash 4. A reference to the NES game was added back into Marth's alts in Ultimate, but this time it's in reference to his official art (AKA No Pants Marth)
Little Mac's "yellow outfit" isn't a reference to the P2 outfit in Punch Out Wii, it's a reference to Little Mac's Tittle Defense outfit after beating all the other characters and winning the championship. And his "standard blue" outfit is a reference to his Major Circuit outfit. Don't know if he knows this, but I felt like the way he explained these two made them sound like generic color changes without much meaning.
Marth has had rejected alts. The one based off of Roy in Smash 4, it got replaced by an alt based on his art from Fire Emblem 1. The teal one from Brawl which more directly references Fire Emblem 3 has either been replaced or *highly* modified, to where many of the colors aren't even the same. The black alt has also been changed to include orange.

(20:35) Wario has been the only character so far that had two costumes per team colour, if I'm not mistaken. Smash 4 changed it so you can have any colour for your team; Brawl and earlier had specific costumes for red, blue and green, and if you changed costume, you changed team, and only had 3 costumes to pick from. But Wario had 6.

The blue goggles started on Pichu in Melee, and then got switched to Pikachu in Brawl. Arguably, the costume was not switched, but rather, Pichu simply evolved into Pikachu, and the Pichu in Melee is the Pikachu in Brawl.

Something I'd like to add about Luigi's alts is that in the transition from Smash 4 to Smash Ultimate his purple Waluigi alt was changed. The L on his cap was changed from yellow to purple, for one reason or another.

An idea that I just thought of which I think would be a good improvement to the current set colour swap system, is a fully customisable colour setting for each character. For example if you picked fox you can pick his for colour and visor colour separately amongst a group of options provided.
I’d still love to see a costume DLC. I don’t know how many people would want it, but I’d definitely drop some money on that.

The blue-red Mario swap is also a callback to his older design in his earlier games. (SMB1, 2, and Lost Levels for example)
1:55 Except Peach has exactly this. In fact, I'd say peach's is worse than Mario's would've been. She has one completely white costume, and one that's white with a red trim on her dress and umbrella. Mario's wedding outfit has a completely different outfit, and his Fire is pretty distinguishable since it's primarily red. Peach's are the same model, both primarily white.
Peach should had her wedding dress from Odyssey instead of just a white version of her dress

I grew up watching SML so when Black Yoshi was removed it really took away a part of my childhood.
I would've preferred Mario gaining an Ice Mario alt had that meant losing Fire Mario. Kinda wish Ice Luigi was also a thing.
The Choice Band Pikachu I always thought was neat because it was also a shiny Pikachu in a game where all the other Pokemon characters lacked their shiny forms (since Incineroar, Squirtle, and Ivysaur weren’t in Smash 4)

I feel like changing the Wario costume for Mario, into the Mario Maker was natural though, as not only is Mario Maker important, and it's a new costume with similar colors, but Wario is his own character now, and doesn't need that extra representation.
Amazing video! I wanted to point out an incredibly big misconception about Mewtwo's Melee green alt, however. Melee's Green Mewtwo, even having a big resemblence, is not based in the actual shiny Mewtwo. At the time Melee came out, Gold and Silver were the newest games, where he didn't had that green as the shiny, but rather the yellow one Smash 4 and Ultimate has. The green one in Ultimate was basically made just for the Green Team slot I think.
Aside from that, I couldn't find anything off of any of your explanations. Really miss the old Bowser alts and Wario Mario, too. As said before, great video, love me some alts
The Foreman Spike themed alt for Mario turning black actually can be a reference to Wrecking Crew 98 version for Foreman Spike who's clothes has turned darker near black.
26:37 I’m literally a couple months late on this but as a Little Mac Main I must say that the yellow alt is based on his appearance after you win the world circuit and not the Player 2 costume

-I thought the blue bowser was based on dark bowser from inside story! But imposter bowser is cool, something I didn’t know about.
-Someone else said this here, but the purple Sm4sh design was a reference to Galacta knight. They changed it to more closely resemble him in ultimate, and added a scar to the dark MK’s mask too. (They also changed the sword colors!)
-Ike’s white clothes & blue cape might be a reference to Sigurd, another FE protagonist, but idk

I really liked the black Bowser alt from Melee, kinda sad to see it has changed. In particular I liked it because when you fought Bowser in Adventure Mode, he would have the black look if you got there in time for the Giga Bowser fight, with him looking normal if you didn't. So that color was a sign of success!
To reach Giga Bowser you have to play Adventure Mode at Normal Difficulty or higher, get there within 18 minutes or less, and without using continues.
