      I kind of have to disagree with you when you say the maxamet is not the knife for the typical everyday user who knows little to nothing about sharpening ONLY because if you truly use the knife and ALL of its benefits (ie. Spyderco sharpening them) then you can essentially buy and use whatever you want and just let them sharpen the knives that they made....

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya but the typical every day user definitely isn't putting the knife through its intended paces. And if they somehow accidentally damage the edge in the process, they won't be able to sharpen it without proper equipment, so they'll have to send it to Spyderco, which isn't necessarily convenient. On top of that, it isn't anywhere near stainless. Anyone who lives in an environment that causes blades to corrode more quickly won't have a use for it at all.

    I tend to lean more toward the toughness attribute in my work knives. I’m a reasonably competent sharpener, but I don’t particularly enjoy it so my philosophy is to never let them get really dull in the first place and have come to prefer steels that I can more easily maintain an edge on by just stropping them back fairly quickly.

  • @ncgearguy05

    Until I started sharpening myself, I used to look into steels that would hold an edge really long before I had to pay someone and send it out to have sharpened. Now that I sharpen my own knives I really appreciate the ease of sharpening aspect. I will certainly trade some edge retention for toughness and ease of sharpening haha. So far I have sharpened AEB-L, 20CV, S35VN, BD1N, and Elmax. I disliked S35VN the most, that knife had a chip and it sucked. I completely reprofiled the 20CV and that was easier to me. BD1N was the easiest, but I would say for a higher end steel, the Elmax was my favorite to sharpen so far. This sounds like it would be a nice EDC steel for sure.

    • @81ghale
      @81ghale 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t care much for sharpening s35vn either. My favorites that balance retention and ease/satisfaction of sharpening are Hap40 and 52100. M4 is really great too, just takes a little longer unless you have some really tough stones to use. I hope they do more in 52100, that steel is great.

      Interesting, I got a KME with diamond stones recently, so I went through and sharpened a bunch of my knives in a row. A couple in S30V, S110V, Maxamet, VG-10, D2 and S35VN, most were pretty easy, but one of the S35VNs was a real bear, took much longer than it seemed like it should. I assumed it was just the blade profile, but maybe S35VN is also a bit harder sharpening than I had assumed.

      @@dinodiaz3532 I have two custom kitchen knives in AEB-L they are pretty thin behind the edge so it doesn’t take much to get them sharp again on my WE with diamond stones. If my wife didn’t toss them in the sink like a butter knife it would be much easier lol. Though I do not know what hardness these are at. I know some heat treat AEB-L pretty hard.

    The pocket clip on mine was loose and crooked, I assume because the screw head is too small and when I went to tighten it the screw just kept spinning because the D shape in the FRN gave way to the metal screw. Is there an aftermarket pocket clip that comes with screws that can be held with a tool on both ends so I can tighten it?

    Spyderco have some ingenious ways of basically getting you to re-buy what is basically S30v over and over and over again. The composition and heat treat of a steel makes a difference, but you can make a big difference too with what type of edge you put on your knife.

    I have to critique one of your comments, but please don't take it the wrong way. You're not the only one who says this, but I really wish my point will come across in the spirit it is intended. A steel's "edge retention" comes from its hardness, its wear resistance, its corrosion resistance to some extent, and its toughness. And we also know that hardness directly contributes to wear resistance in combination with the carbide type, %, and distribution. You said at 3:07, "Edge retention is not the end all be all of a steel." I completely disagree with that statement. But I am 95% sure what you meant to say was "Wear resistance is not the end all...." I don't know about anyone else, but apart from corrosion resistance, which I usually don't care about, "edge retention" is EXACTLY what I would want any steel to have. A steel to "retain its edge". "Wear resistance is not the end all be all of a steel". Now that statement I fully agree with. Carry on!

    It 's like Spyderco was trying to fix an issue no one was having. I can't imagine that RD for a new steel is cheap, so why do it just to create something that's basically the same as something that already exists?
    It feels like they did it JUST so they would have a new steel to make sprint runs of, and thus charge more for.

    To most people who are into knives, the variation is more important than the steel itself. They want the ability to say they have something that will impress other knife nerds.

      As someone who runs a channel that generates roughly 85,000 comments per year, I can tell you that isn't an accurate statement. Some people collect steel, some people collect a certain style or design, and some people just like knives. People who use knives for specialized tasks and make appropriate use of certain steels are also integrated within these groups. There are so many hybridizations of "knife people" that it's just not as simple as lumping people into a "need to impress" category.

      What I’m saying is knife steels are so good these days, they care more about the rarity of a certain knife than the steel itself. There’s a reason why all of the sprint runs and exclusives are desirable and it’s not because they’re leaps and bounds better than the standard versions. It’s because they are rare. I’ll give you an example that’s right in front you. Spyderco could literally make up a name for steel. A steel that’s remarkably like a lot of other steels. Steels that the average user wouldn’t be able to discern between had its name not been printed on the blade. But knife users will cover it if it’s less available than general variations. One only has to search the web to know this is true. While you are a larger content provider, you aren’t the only one. I can countless videos on the internet 8-10 steel variations of one knife. And they cover the rarest versions above the standard versions. It’s human nature to want something that no one else has. I’m not ignoring that because you have a platform and feel differently. And appeals to authority aren’t a very good way to make someone else see your point. This is especially true when you appeal to yourself as the authority.

      @@toddboone333 na sorry. This is just your perspective. What you're saying is true for some people, but you are limited to what you've witnessed within the community, and it seems like you're just reconfirming the same thing over and over. I thought the same way until I had a wider view of things. 85k comments / year is just way too much data to ignore.
      I'm not the authority. I'm just someone who can see the broader picture now.

    There 3 kinds of people. Some prefer their blades to roll, others prefer their blades to chip 😁

    If it’s exclusive to Spyderco, I’ll never get a chance to use it.

      Once it hits their production models I will pick up a blade with it but their sprint runs sell out quickly.

      The link for the steel I can certainly add for you. As far as the structure of my description goes, the vast majority of my viewers are in favor of it because it helps them find new offerings sorted by popular brands, or my own personal favorites. Its been this way for over a year. Everyone who regularly watches is aware of it. Not trying to be rude, but it's definitely going to stay exactly the same.

    Spyderco knives are just so ugly. I just can’t buy one.

      I hated them until I tried one, especially the compression lock its easily one of the best lock styles for both fidget-ability and strength. and the spydie hole can be vary off putting when looking at spyderco knives, until you put one to use and release all the great ways it can be operated by one hand.
      Spydercos arent the most attractive folders but they put a lot of thought and design into usability... theres a lot of sweet folders I think I want... then I fiddle around with my Para3 and release its already pocket perfection.
      Imo besides the leaf point blade tip being a bit delicate, spydercos are a true work horse knife.

    The one minute ad for yourself at the beginning got you unsubscribed
    A lot of the other knife channels are actually talking about knives

    Followed this 3 year old link to BHQ to a hilarious surprise that this same exact $140 knife is now well over $200 (not really funny at all)
