Be careful buying a Spyderco Paramilitary 2/Para 3 from Amazon. They seem to have issues (for whatever reason) with fakes entering their supply chain with this series. I think I read somewhere that the PM2 is the most commonly faked knife on the market right now. I received a fake PM2 from them a while back, and I'm by no means the only one. They made good on it without issue, but the fake was pretty darn convincing. If there weren't a ton of videos on how to spot a fake, I might have been fooled since it was my first PM2.

Spyderco knives are pretty damn solid and you get more for the money compared to Benchmade.
I personally only have one mid-grade Spyderco, the Manix 2 in S30V and absolutely love it. I carry it alternating with my ZT 0566 with a S35VN blade. Both are badass, strong and sharp as hell. The Spyderco is a better slicer, while the ZT is built like a freaking tank.
Each serves a similar, yet slightly different purpose. It depends on what I am doing and where I am going.
Office, I take the Manix 2.
Weekend running around, I take the ZT 0566.
Either way, you can't have too many great knives.

I carry a Spyderco Para2 after having a Benchmade axis lock. I really prefer the Spydy hole opener to a thumb stud. I had the thumb stud catch on my pocket more than once. The last Benchmade I considered buying actually had a Spydy hole!
You need to clean and tune the action on yours. It should drop closed freely when you release the back lock.

Cody, love your use of “the fizz” like James May. The way you close that para 3 scares me. I’ve carried a PM2 for years and the compression lock should allow the knife to drop shut or shut with very slight wrist action. It’s why that family of knives gives me the fizz. Open and shut lightning fast with or without gloves etc. You may just need to open your para 3 and give it a clean and oiling. Your fingers never need to be in the blade path with a compression lock. God bless you and the family.

    • @kg3225
      @kg3225 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I have several para 2 and para 3s. I open them both using the compression lock like the axis lock. But all of them definitely required a break in period for the washers in them to wear down just a bit. Also the para 2s have always flipped easier for me. The longer blade gives you more leverage to flip it open and closed. The para 2 is a superior knife to the para 3 anyway.

If the Para3 blade is not dropping close when you release the compression lock you may have gotten one that has been used for a few days and then returned dirty by a previous buyer, as I suspect happened with my Para3 purchase.
I have a para3 all black hardware version in s45vn and it wasn't dropping close like my PM2 wharncliffe exclusive from cuttleryshoppe does.
I took my time and used a video by Nick Shabazz as a guide on how to take apart the para 3.
in about 30 minutes I removed the blade and phosphor bronze washers from the handle and clean the relevant parts that come into contact with the pivot with rubbing alcohol.
Then I used a q-tip (while being careful not to leave cotton fibers behind) to lightly apply baby-oil (basically scented mineral oil) to the washers.
After it was reassembled with blue lock tight to keep the screws in place, I tried opening and closing the knife and it was so smooth... I'd think it was on bearings if I didn't know better.

I had a Gerber with AS34 steel (held an edge well) for many years. It did well.
I do use a pocket clip as it helps get a knife out with 70 year old truckers arthritic hands. My preference is that the clip anchors it in the pocket tip down. That is all that keeps me from owning a Benchmade 940. I’ve had a Spyderco Para III FOR five years. It’s not perfect but meets the criteria. When I pop it from my pocket I position my thumb and forefinger in the Spyder hole and a small downward flip locks it open. Likewise, I hold the knife between thumb and fingers, edge down, activate the liner lock and gravity closes the knife securely.
The clip can be positioned tip up or tip down to the users preference.
Mine is blue in color for ease to see when working. Not a fanboy as I look for something better all the time.

I've had a 940 for a good many years (15 or so). I do have to say that the blade geometry on it is a bit thick for trying to slice through something with substance. I haven't tried to pry much with it, but it seems much more like a gentleman's folder than a hard use blade... and for that, I really miss my 921 Switchback (gave it to a friend a decade ago).
Most of my daily drivers are Spyderco. The 2 I generally have on me is a fully serrated Endura and a plain Manix 2 XL. I have plenty of others (Centofante 4, Native, Native Chief, Endura plain in ZDP-189, Honeybee, Harpy, Captain & Matriarch 2) but those two are the workhorses I keep coming back to.

Pinch your pointer and thumb together through the Spyder hole and snap your wrist down to use the weight of the handle to deploy the knife. Easier to find that grip and the way your hand lands with that deployment its in a very detailed oriented cutting position.

I like spiderco knives.... carry one all the time. I also like the byrd carcara. Very good knives.

I own both and it’s like my kids, I can’t tell who’s better, I love both equally.

I do agree with the clip part but the only knife I lost without a pocket clip is a leatherman Free P4.......Still regretting taking it off
