Dr. Thomas (and Ms. Jessica and Owl!), Thanks so much for this video and for all you do for the knife community! I LOVE MAGNACUT - IT'S SO AWESOME! 😎👍
For someone who is a big knife collector and user as well as who grew up watching Mr. Rodgers regularly - this video was so funny, creative, and educational all at the same time to me! Part of what made it so funny was how fast it went from very simple Mr. Rodgers land to "Whoa, hold-up, rewind, getting a bit complicated for me and I didn't catch that" (over and over)! I really appreciate that you take the time and effort to make such videos, maintain your website, and write your book (I plan to buy) so that we can all learn more details about the hobby so many of us out here enjoy! I also like that you included the technical details and tried to present it in a simpler format for us regular folk!
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate you and your work and to let you know that: YOU ROCK DR. THOMAS! May God continue to bless your work as a scientist with wisdom, knowledge, and discernment as well as bless your family with peace, love, and provision more than you can even ask or think!

You mentioned that edge angle causes chipping, but so do manufactured burnt edges when they sharpen on grinders and belts without water being fed over them. Once you sharpen away the burnt edges your edge angle becomes better at resisting chips at that angle. But otherwise your correct 100% if there were no burnt edge. I say this because its very common in the industry and you yourself have written about this.

After watching and internalizing the whole 17-minute video, my main takeaway from it is that “knife steel snobbery” is half-baked. Steel snobs only ever judge a knife steel as superior based only in one key criteria: edge retention. I like CTS-XHP. Very well balanced. But there is always some idiot out there who will say it is trash because it doesn’t have as high an edge retention as the S110v.

I've always felt the same, that CTS-XHP's balance made it my steel of choice when procuring knives. So I guess what's cool about Magna is it appears to be a linear improvement in that exact direction. Awesome.

This video was so informative, thanks for making this TH-cam channel. I'm brand new to knife making with only two "whole" one week courses under my belt. I just wanted to buy some flat stock to practice and was immediately overwhelmed by the choices. I have no idea what I'm doing so this helped me a ton. I'll continue to practice with 1084 and 1090 to get better at forging, grinding, and heat treating, but just picked up your book to learn more about metallurgy. It's such a deep ocean of a subject and I know without a guide I'm going to get lost. The breakdowns I've seen on some metal stock websites make just a little more sense to me now. Well done.
Now, as a video production and animation professional with over 20 years of experience I have to say DON'T CHANGE A THING! Super entertaining, quirky in a good way, and fun to watch. My only critique would be Mr Own needs a microphone to not have so much room reverb. I LOVED that your wife read your script to the owl. She's such a good sport

I appreciate your work, and I started a series myself trying to help novice users understand more of what’s going on under the hood with knife steel (mine being more of a layman’s understanding, but based on looking at lots of research).

    Hahaha,
Thank You Mr. Neighbor for the very informative talk. It was hard to watch without smiling. Nice to see you have a good sense of humor Doctor Thomas and thanks to the wife too, very cute. I have learned a tremendous amount about steel from your articles but will watch anymore vids you put out. It did fill a couple gaps.

Great Video.. you made something highly technical fun and "easier" to understand. It is certainly a huge Market these days as the blade dteel is what allows Mfg's to charge the prices they do for certain Steels. Id love to see more on this subject and possibly compare and contrast the top 20 blade steels in some clinical trials.. Love the Mr Rogers production as well!! great trolley budget and Jessica / Mr Owl..

No disrespect when I admit the style of narration and how the vid is made up doesn't necessarily fit my personal taste, BUT MAN WAS THIS INFORMATIVE AND WELL STRUCTURED. Hitting "Like" therefore and hoping you understand I mean this as a huge compliment

The reason why Aogami Blue Super is so good is that it is sandwiched between softer metal, so although brittle, the cladding makes up for it by adding flexibility
