The appeal of CCA to me - aside from the animation and my general affection for this period of the franchise - is that it takes two characters who have in many ways defined eachother's existence, with many similar excellent qualities as people, who've both fought eachother and along side one another, have achieved literal supernatural understanding of one another's mindset and character, and fundamentally agree on so much about the nature of the world... yet even with all that they're like "fuck this guy".
Quattro is almost like Casvals real personality that he’s suppressed for years while being Char. Then final he makes a new identity after being a narcissistic Char for years and finally balanced the scale to the other side of himself being what his father stood for and the Daikun name
In case anyone is curious, the Titans just kinda grabbed a lot of Federation stuff and had no issue wrecking it, so the state is pretty much broke by Char's Counterattack. Char knows this, and he knows the Federation isn't really in a position to stop the space colonies from doing whatever they want now, so his entire plan here is just a flimsy attempt to get the Zeon Zum Deikun fanboy funding for his plan to fight Amuro. So basically, Char is so used to getting by on charm and talent that he never actually grew up, and became the kind of person who goes, "give me the middle lane or I feed," only with weapons of master destruction.
Casvall has always been manipulative, he effectively MADE Zeon depend on him so he could enact his revenge on the Zabi family for killing his dad! That sort of shit does tend to be difficult to get over, though, I can't imagine why... Although, I did always find it strange he bears such little ill will towards Mineva Zabi... Plus the loss of Lala...
Yeah to be honest I feel he should have had the same Ill will toward Garma with the amount he gave to Mineva. Mostly because the Older members would have been involved with his father's Assassination making Garma a perfect Puppet to take over what was his father's.

In short. Most of Char's characterization in Zeta and in 0079 shows him as a total piece of shit who doesn't want to be. A broken husk of a man who by the time you get to Char's Counter Attack is so desperate for love that his last words are crying for someone who he thought might always love him. He's pathetic, and tragic, and if you look at him through this lens, a manchild, you start to get why he teases Amuro and lets him know whats hes doing.

That balloon thing happened in real life an army used them to confuse drones and aerial surveillance leaving large balloons shaped like tanks while they retreated
The use of inflatable decoys is actually a tactic that dates all the way back to WWII, being used to trick airplane photography since it's hard to tell the difference with the quality of cameras at the time at the altitude that they took them. It absolutely makes a lot of sense in this setting as well for the same reasons, space is so big and you can get sightlines from so far that it'd be hard to tell if they were fake ships unless you got real close to em.

Honestly, the most interesting thing to come out of CCA was how that story was adapted in the Super Robot Wars games, where they mostly try to fix most parts of the narrative that most of the fans can't stand like Char's motivation for why he did his heel turn, Amuro not bothering to wonder WHY Char would do this or the whole reenactment of the Lalah Suun incident with Quess, Gyunei and Hathaway. Personally speaking though, I just got the feeling that Char was just burnt out by the time of the movie. Now I know that in the movie Char gives some reasons why during his big speech and with his alone time with Nanai where he just seems to be burnt out and wanting this whole song and dance to end but still it seems to be implied. Also the ending is the biggest pile of Bullshit ever. Speaking of SRW as cool as the Sazabi and Nu Gundam are, the Nightingale and Hi-Nu Gundam top them in my opinion.
It's also rather jarring how the plot relies on a bunch of people going "sure, let's give this guy another asteroid, what could go wrong?" Anyone with an inkling of Char's plan should be trying to kill him, including his allies. No one seems to understand that actions have consequences apart from the ones they want.
One part that really confused me about this movie is the time skip between the last time we see char in zeta and the next time we see him legit doing a major heel turn. Like what happened in between ? He just laid low through all of zz and just fucked off for 6 years then came back out of nowhere ? With a huge force mind you.

There's a reason why Char, the anime villain, has been loved for so many years, he's not just a cool and strong rival. He has a pathetic inner conflict that he wants to hide behind that mask, he regrets and cries, he makes mistakes, he's not perfect enough to play the role of the human Newtype his father showed him to be, but he keeps trying to be strong and good. It's impossible not to love him.
So glad this is back. I’d seen CCA after watching the Gundam trilogy and loved it. It helped me to see how Gundam really is the Japanese equivalent of Star Wars. I mean I believed it since I’d seen 2 giant Gundams there and loved wing as a kid. But this in light of MSG and Zeta and thinking back on how Japan has grown it made sense. I never did see ZZ but once I finish that I plan to rewatch this with new eyes. The Sazabi and Nu Gundam are incredible!
Going through the U.C. universe for the first time in release order, just started 08th team. I watched Char’s Counterattack for the first time about a month ago. I can’t believe they killed off the godfathers of Gundam, Amuro and Char, that way. It seemed so anticlimactic. I actually didn’t even realize they died or disappeared or whatever, at first. I had to rewind and watch the scene again, and was still confused. I’ll miss the Char from Zeta, he was so cool.
Aww it’s good man, it’s nostalgia. That’s our whole community! Lol. But I have mixed feelings about Char’s CA bc I really wanted Char to get it right. I think it MAY be bc Zechs/Milliardo was my intro to the archetype and his ending was happier.

I'm glad you re uploaded this. Watching your perspective on a franchise I fell in love with so long ago has been a real delight. I didn't see this originally, and despite it being an old work of yours, it's still really good. This was in fact the first Gundam anything I ever watched. From a rented tape from a Japanese video store in San Diego that we copied using 2 VCR's...1989 I believe. The drama between the characters, much of it hinted at because we hadn't seen other Gundam work, drew me in. Even now it's one of my favorite movies ever, even though ad I got older, I could see the flaws in the movie much more clearly. I think Tomino has a serious problem with intellectuals and philosophical cults of personality, and Amuro literally dumps this on you during their man to man duel. Quess is admittedly a bad character, but I think Tomino at the time didn't want to give up on presenting the deluded follower...a very much realistic, of not very likeable type of character. Zeta gave us 2, in Reccoa and Sarah, and Quess fills the role here. What is puzzling is what Lalah's spirit sees in him. Probably seeing the nobility of his goals rather than the means. Lalah was very much the opposite of Nanai and Quess in that Chars was devoted to her rather than the other way around. Lalah remains the follower done right...not deluded...but definitely devoted.
I love how they're in space, they have cities in space, they have giant robots in space, they're able to do wireless communication between robots in space, meanwhile they still have telephones with cords. I was taken aback I think when I saw Char's origin at one point A guy uses a cell phone if I remember correctly.
Just watch CCA this morning. Finally fulfills my desire to have watched it after I saw the really cool commercial late night when I was in like third grade on Toonami. At that point I only seen bits and pieces of wing, was in progress of watching G Gundam on Toonami, and was playing Gundam battle Assault 2 on PlayStation 1. I remember thinking the commercial it was so cool this dude is going to drop an asteroid on Earth. And I always loved playing as the Sazabi on Battle Assault 2. Full Circle completed. My conclusion after having watched all of the universal Century stuff now where Char played a part, is that he is just as a weird guy as I thought he was. He should have stayed as Quattro vagina because that was my favorite favorite version of him.
"I'm not sure how to feel about her [Quess'] character..." Well, the theater *I* was in cheered when she finally ate it back two years ago, so I think that sums it up for me.
I started watching the channel after the original video was delisted so I am so happy to see this. CCA was the first gundam anything I ever say, and it made a very strong impression. I liked that even without having seen any of the shows I was still able to follow the plot easily. Even after seeing everything leading up to the movie, still feels like Char doesn't care about the environment anymore and is just looking for one final duel with Amuro. Can't wait to see more of your reviews, and hopefully this one doesn't get yanked by Sunrise.
I hope since you covered Macross you will cover the Movie Do you remember love. Its basically a retelling of the orginal but its so well done and the amimation is godlike espesically for 1985
Char's Coutnerattack is a good movie overall. The animation is gorgeous, the character are beutiful, the mobile suit designs are also gorgeous. Yes, the dub is hilarious at times.
Oh so much this. The RE-GZ and Jegan are my two favorite mass produced models but they can keep'em if it means we get Quattro development and not a regression into a stupider version of Char.
The guy left his sister alone in the darkest moment of her life, groomed Lalah because he needed "emotional support" (also because he wanted to make a weapon), lied to Garma for years mantaining a fake friendship that had only the purpose of killing him for a pitty vendetta that Garma himself was not even involved, ran away from his responsabilities with Axis and left Haman to do what she wishes, let Kamille suffer despite the fact that Amuro warned him multiple times that something bad would happen, didn't came back to check on Kamille after an irreversible damage that was his fault, didn't came back to try to stop Haman also. Char is not a good guy by any metric.
Right now I’m going through watching the series and coming back here for the retrospective. These videos are great brotha keep that good 💩 comin. I’m about to watch double Zetta And then return to to CCA then back to this video
So glad to see this back up since I hadn't found youyr channel yet the first time around. I think Char's Counter Attack was the second thing I watched related to the UC and I wish I could remember my initial thoughts on it better. I know I was still much more of a Gundam Wing fanboy during that time, so while the action was great, I didn't remember the movie super fondly. It wasn't until I was doing my complete Gundam runthru about 6 or 7 years ago that I really found an appreciation for it. I do hope we'll get an Outlaw Star video, that was another one of my favorite things while I was growing up and watching Toonami. I haven't rewatched that outside of the Cartoon Network reruns.
I'd like to briefly defend Char in this instance even though I think this movie damaged his character so much that he feels like a different person entirely. Like you say he's definitely manipulative, but I don't think in the manner suggested here. I think for example that him sleazing with Nanai and Quess is basically trying to get them both to fight harder for him. He tells Gyunei that he doesn't love either of them. He just wants Neo Zeon to win. But when Quess tries to get with him, he sees how much effort she puts into being an MS pilot and how her newtype powers develop as a result, so he sort of encourages it. At the end I think that's made more clear when he doesn't mourn her death, instead going on about how his love was always Lalah. Not only that, but he wanted to basically have someone that would genuinely treat him like family. The one good thing that they did with his character was making him pretty much refuse to kill Amuro. He could've chased down he ReGZ at the start and probably destroyed it pretty handily, it's probably one of the weakest Gundams of its time. Instead he chose to evacuate Gyunei even though his Jagd Doga wasn't unable to return on its own. He also prevented Quess from possibly shooting Amuro. He also leaks the psychoframe tech to Amuro in the first place. And when he sees the Nu Gundam on Axis uncrewed while Amuro goes into the tunnels, he doesn't destroy it, even though Amuro would have 100 percent blown up the Sazabi if their positions were reversed. At this point it's because Amuro is probably the only person who comes close to understanding Char. Listening to their final words as the Nu Gundam tries to push back Axis, they're both almost in tears trying to show each other their philosophies, knowing neither of them will change their minds. Other than that though, I hate what CCA did to Char. Sick mobile suits though
The fight with Amuro was pretty much the whole point of the movie. Everything else was just an excuse to force it and Char wouldn't have been satisfied with offing Amuro easily. But again, even that's been warped since Char originally believed it wasn't about the mobile suit but the pilot. Tomino had to break the character in order to force this last fight and it's a real shame.

I honestly really dislike Quess, if you removed her completely and just gave Hathaway different reasons for his arc they could've put more emphasis on Char's and Amuro's rivalry which is really more what I came for. The movie feels like it has a few too many characters in it.

Just an absolute waste of time to even have her in the story, which she played an irrelevant part of as you said, the story would’ve not only been fine but better without her.
I don't condone dropping acid and watching anime, but if you do watch Chars Counterattack and the Yhwach vs Yamamoto episodes of Bleach TYBW. It won't change your life, in a major way, but damn do colors go brrrr.
I HATE Chars Counterattack with a passion. Zeta did a good job of fleshing Char out and showing him as an anti-hero... Then CCA just turns him into a generic villain looking for a rematch. Char motives here didn't make a lick of sense, not just his idea to "force humanity into space", wich could attributed to a mental breakdown, but the whole Newtype theory theorized by his father Zeon Zum Deikun: 1) Newtypes can't be the next step of evolution for humankind, because for evolution to happen you need natural or sexual selection, something that kills off the oldtypes and only leaves newtypes alive, or something that makes newtypes more attractive to the other sex, we can exclude sexual selection, wich leaves with natural selection, the only thing that could come close would be war, newtypes are better at fighting, so they tend to survive more than old types, but this would contradict the whole point of Zeon's theory, since newtypes are simply better killers, not heralds of peace and understanding; 2) the fact that "gravity weighs people's souls" i mean,WTF? If anything the lack of gravity would lead to severe health problems and malformations, not to mention that colonies have artificial gravity in order to mitigate those issues. In my opinion all the problems of the Universal Century were caused by the Federation's decision to grant autonomy to Munzo/Side 3, this lack of supervision and governance allowed power hungry factions like the Zabi and Ral families to assert more dominance over Munzo's internal politics, and in order to give legitimacy to their power they pushed the crazy ideology of Zeon Zum Deikun.

When I first saw CCA, I had not seen Zeta or ZZ, so it's watchable without those … it's just much better if you HAVE seen them and have some idea what is up with Amuro. Quess I just hate. What is it about Gundam making women as dumb as a fking stump? That said … Hathaway isn't much better. I want to view them both through the lens of "they're too young to be on a battlefield and it's tragic that they're there at all, but … no. I have not seen nor read the Hathaway stuff. I've been spoiled on the ending (which wasn't much of a spoiler-it's Gundam UC after all), but I can't help but go into them thinking that Hathaway has gotten better than he deserved for Hathaway's Flash to even take place.

One part that really confused me about this movie is the time skip between the last time we see char in zeta and the next time we see him legit doing a major heel turn. Like what happened in between ? He just laid low through all of zz and just fucked off for 6 years then came back out of nowhere ? With a huge force mind you.

There's a reason why Char, the anime villain, has been loved for so many years, he's not just a cool and strong rival. He has a pathetic inner conflict that he wants to hide behind that mask, he regrets and cries, he makes mistakes, he's not perfect enough to play the role of the human Newtype his father showed him to be, but he keeps trying to be strong and good. It's impossible not to love him.

So glad this is back. I’d seen CCA after watching the Gundam trilogy and loved it. It helped me to see how Gundam really is the Japanese equivalent of Star Wars. I mean I believed it since I’d seen 2 giant Gundams there and loved wing as a kid. But this in light of MSG and Zeta and thinking back on how Japan has grown it made sense. I never did see ZZ but once I finish that I plan to rewatch this with new eyes.

Going through the U.C. universe for the first time in release order, just started 08th team. I watched Char’s Counterattack for the first time about a month ago. I can’t believe they killed off the godfathers of Gundam, Amuro and Char, that way. It seemed so anticlimactic. I actually didn’t even realize they died or disappeared or whatever, at first. I had to rewind and watch the scene again, and was still confused. I’ll miss the Char from Zeta, he was so cool.
Undoubtedly the best Gundam movie!
Each Gundam have unique silhouette and colours schemes so it’s easy to tell them apart.

Have you ever watched the dub for the MSG compilation movie trilogy? It's hilariously bad, especially the first movie, though part of that is also due to the script, they add a bunch of cheesy one-liners that DO NOT fit in Gundam.

I'm glad you re uploaded this. Watching your perspective on a franchise I fell in love with so long ago has been a real delight. I didn't see this originally, and despite it being an old work of yours, it's still really good.
This was in fact the first Gundam anything I ever watched. From a rented tape from a Japanese video store in San Diego that we copied using 2 VCR's...1989 I believe. The drama between the characters, much of it hinted at because we hadn't seen other Gundam work, drew me in. Even now it's one of my favorite movies ever, even though ad I got older, I could see the flaws in the movie much more clearly.
I think Tomino has a serious problem with intellectuals and philosophical cults of personality, and Amuro literally dumps this on you during their man to man duel. Quess is admittedly a bad character, but I think Tomino at the time didn't want to give up on presenting the deluded follower...a very much realistic, of not very likeable type of character. Zeta gave us 2, in Reccoa and Sarah, and Quess fills the role here. What is puzzling is what Lalah's spirit sees in him. Probably seeing the nobility of his goals rather than the means. Lalah was very much the opposite of Nanai and Quess in that Chars was devoted to her rather than the other way around. Lalah remains the follower done right...not deluded...but definitely devoted.

I love how they're in space, they have cities in space, they have giant robots in space, they're able to do wireless communication between robots in space, meanwhile they still have telephones with cords. I was taken aback I think when I saw Char's origin at one point A guy uses a cell phone if I remember correctly.
Just watch CCA this morning. Finally fulfills my desire to have watched it after I saw the really cool commercial late night when I was in like third grade on Toonami. At that point I only seen bits and pieces of wing, was in progress of watching G Gundam on Toonami, and was playing Gundam battle Assault 2 on PlayStation 1. I remember thinking the commercial it was so cool this dude is going to drop an asteroid on Earth. And I always loved playing as the Sazabi on Battle Assault 2. Full Circle completed. My conclusion after having watched all of the universal Century stuff now where Char played a part, is that he is just as a weird guy as I thought he was. He should have stayed as Quattro vagina because that was my favorite favorite version of him.

I started watching the channel after the original video was delisted so I am so happy to see this.
CCA was the first gundam anything I ever say, and it made a very strong impression. I liked that even without having seen any of the shows I was still able to follow the plot easily. Even after seeing everything leading up to the movie, still feels like Char doesn't care about the environment anymore and is just looking for one final duel with Amuro.
Can't wait to see more of your reviews, and hopefully this one doesn't get yanked by Sunrise.
I hope since you covered Macross you will cover the Movie Do you remember love. Its basically a retelling of the orginal but its so well done and the amimation is godlike espesically for 1985
Char's Coutnerattack is a good movie overall. The animation is gorgeous, the character are beutiful, the mobile suit designs are also gorgeous. Yes, the dub is hilarious at times.

The guy left his sister alone in the darkest moment of her life, groomed Lalah because he needed "emotional support" (also because he wanted to make a weapon), lied to Garma for years mantaining a fake friendship that had only the purpose of killing him for a pitty vendetta that Garma himself was not even involved, ran away from his responsabilities with Axis and left Haman to do what she wishes, let Kamille suffer despite the fact that Amuro warned him multiple times that something bad would happen, didn't came back to check on Kamille after an irreversible damage that was his fault, didn't came back to try to stop Haman also.
Char is not a good guy by any metric.

The best Gundam movie from the UC timeline.
So glad to see this back up since I hadn't found youyr channel yet the first time around. I think Char's Counter Attack was the second thing I watched related to the UC and I wish I could remember my initial thoughts on it better. I know I was still much more of a Gundam Wing fanboy during that time, so while the action was great, I didn't remember the movie super fondly. It wasn't until I was doing my complete Gundam runthru about 6 or 7 years ago that I really found an appreciation for it.
I do hope we'll get an Outlaw Star video, that was another one of my favorite things while I was growing up and watching Toonami. I haven't rewatched that outside of the Cartoon Network reruns.
I feel like id enjoy this movie more if we had more contex for the gap between ZZ anf CCA
In defense of the federation in ZZ they were kinda busy trying to put down a rebelion on the asteroid pezun.
I'd like to briefly defend Char in this instance even though I think this movie damaged his character so much that he feels like a different person entirely. Like you say he's definitely manipulative, but I don't think in the manner suggested here. I think for example that him sleazing with Nanai and Quess is basically trying to get them both to fight harder for him. He tells Gyunei that he doesn't love either of them. He just wants Neo Zeon to win. But when Quess tries to get with him, he sees how much effort she puts into being an MS pilot and how her newtype powers develop as a result, so he sort of encourages it. At the end I think that's made more clear when he doesn't mourn her death, instead going on about how his love was always Lalah. Not only that, but he wanted to basically have someone that would genuinely treat him like family.
The one good thing that they did with his character was making him pretty much refuse to kill Amuro. He could've chased down he ReGZ at the start and probably destroyed it pretty handily, it's probably one of the weakest Gundams of its time. Instead he chose to evacuate Gyunei even though his Jagd Doga wasn't unable to return on its own. He also prevented Quess from possibly shooting Amuro. He also leaks the psychoframe tech to Amuro in the first place. And when he sees the Nu Gundam on Axis uncrewed while Amuro goes into the tunnels, he doesn't destroy it, even though Amuro would have 100 percent blown up the Sazabi if their positions were reversed. At this point it's because Amuro is probably the only person who comes close to understanding Char. Listening to their final words as the Nu Gundam tries to push back Axis, they're both almost in tears trying to show each other their philosophies, knowing neither of them will change their minds.
Other than that though, I hate what CCA did to Char. Sick mobile suits though
The fight with Amuro was pretty much the whole point of the movie. Everything else was just an excuse to force it and Char wouldn't have been satisfied with offing Amuro easily. But again, even that's been warped since Char originally believed it wasn't about the mobile suit but the pilot. Tomino had to break the character in order to force this last fight and it's a real shame.
My fav Gundam movie, I wish I could find it somewhere. I recorded on vhs back in the day. I love a good war mech movie.

I honestly really dislike Quess, if you removed her completely and just gave Hathaway different reasons for his arc they could've put more emphasis on Char's and Amuro's rivalry which is really more what I came for. The movie feels like it has a few too many characters in it.

Quess was absolutely the worst Gundam character I’ve ever had to deal with not just in the UC but across all the continuities I Don’t think there’s a character as shitty as she is. Just an absolute waste of time to even have her in the story, which she played an irrelevant part of as you said, the story would’ve not only been fine but better without her.

I HATE Chars Counterattack with a passion. Zeta did a good job of fleshing Char out and showing him as an anti-hero... Then CCA just turns him into a generic villain looking for a rematch. It's his midlife crisis, new hair do, new flashy sports car, and new bad attitude. You mean to tell me he just let Kamille go? Didn't try to help him, just let him be a vegetable? He didn't work with Amuro to fix the system? Just nah, burn it all down.
I love the action and mobile suits designs though... which is far more than I can say about the train wreck that is Unicorn.

Char motives here didn't make a lick of sense, not just his idea to "force humanity into space", wich could attributed to a mental breakdown, but the whole Newtype theory theorized by his father Zeon Zum Deikun: 1) Newtypes can't be the next step of evolution for humankind, because for evolution to happen you need natural or sexual selection, something that kills off the oldtypes and only leaves newtypes alive, or something that makes newtypes more attractive to the other sex, we can exclude sexual selection, wich leaves with natural selection, the only thing that could come close would be war, newtypes are better at fighting, so they tend to survive more than old types, but this would contradict the whole point of Zeon's theory, since newtypes are simply better killers, not heralds of peace and understanding;
2) the fact that "gravity weighs people's souls" i mean,WTF? If anything the lack of gravity would lead to severe health problems and malformations, not to mention that colonies have artificial gravity in order to mitigate those issues. In my opinion all the problems of the Universal Century were caused by the Federation's decision to grant autonomy to Munzo/Side 3, this lack of supervision and governance allowed power hungry factions like the Zabi and Ral families to assert more dominance over Munzo's internal politics, and in order to give legitimacy to their power they pushed the crazy ideology of Zeon Zum Deikun.
You've come to your conclusion because you've fundamentally misunderstand both the movie and real science.

When I first saw CCA, I had not seen Zeta or ZZ, so it's watchable without those … it's just much better if you HAVE seen them and have some idea what is up with Amuro. Quess I just hate. What is it about Gundam making women as dumb as a fking stump? That said … Hathaway isn't much better. I want to view them both through the lens of "they're too young to be on a battlefield and it's tragic that they're there at all, but … no.
I have not seen nor read the Hathaway stuff. I've been spoiled on the ending (which wasn't much of a spoiler-it's Gundam UC after all), but I can't help but go into them thinking that Hathaway has gotten better than he deserved for Hathaway's Flash to even take place.
