- In this video, I show you how to fix the ABS and Stabilitrak error on a 2014 Chevy Impala. The process is the same for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 Impala and Malibu.
Causes of of the problem are the sensor or sensor wiring, or more likely the magnetic encoder ring on the wheel bearing hub assembly.
I walk through all of these possibilities and clear the code!

I have 2011 impala. Had this problem a few years back. Paid a shop to fix it and got took. Gonna do it myself now as it has appeared again.

Thank you sooo much for this video. Just save me alot of money. Luckily i did have a scan tool with abs feature to tell me at least which wheel it is. Never would have thought that. I will be changing the others now as they are probably going to be in the same crappy condition

Yep! I have za 2014 Malibu LT. W/ 80k on it. Abs and Service Stabilitrac light came on. I have a foxwell Nt301 but doesn't do ABS stuff so just ordered the Innova 6030p great price for a ABS. Scanner! And it's aUSA based comp. ! Let you know how it goes!!! Thanks for the info!

Did you figure out what was wrong by chance? My impala is doing the same thing. It kicks HARD when trying to change gears and the PRNDL doesn’t light up like normal.
Great video!! My ABS light and stabilitrak light have been on a while (ignore it, it'll go away lol) but now its chiming a lot and I can feel vibration when i press on the break and console displays "Stabilitzer initializing". Hoping to find a local honest mechanic to fix or see if the Mr. can figure it out. Our friend already did diagnostic and confirmed error code was C0040.
It should either be a sensor or a wheel bearing. With the right scanner, it’ll tell you which wheel is the problem.
A replacement wheel bearing is around $100. I posted a video for changing the wheel bearing on this vehicle.
@@HowtoandReviewsOfficial The scanner said it was the right front wheel causing the problem and oddly enough, I kept losing air in that tire as well but replaced both front tires a few weeks ago and no more leak. Also, I already watched your video on how to change the wheel bearing and even found a local distributor that sells the Timken one. Thank you again!!!

Had service stabilitrak and service brake assist go on after driving through 12 in puddle. Wiped thd reluctor rings off, and fixed it. All it cost me was one paper towel.

Thank you for making this video. I keep encountering this issue with my 2015 Impala. I appreciate you taking the time to provide a detailed explanation to resolve the issue. OAN: Recently, my speedometer in the center dashboard disappeared. So, I can't see how fast I am driving without looking at the MPH circle on the right side of the dashboard. I assume it's a sensor that may be out, but I'm not positive. I may need to check the fuse box behind my coin holder under the steering wheel. But I haven't had any luck opening it. Any thoughts as to why this happened?
I have not experienced anything like that. I know the displays can do goofy things when the battery starts going bad. I hope you figure it out!

A basic OBD2 code reader will not show it; they only show check engine light codes. I brought it to a friend at a dealership to scan it for me where the tools can scan all diagnostics
A portion of the rears are visible from under the car. You can jack it up and rotate the wheels to see all of it.
The fronts are nearly impossible to see because of the dust shield.
I would definitely recommend trying to visually see it, or getting it scanned, before just tearing them all down.

Can this also affect the power steering as well. All three conditions happen to my 2015 impala simultaneously…ABS, stabilitrack amd Power steering disabled as well as rear camera warnings
My 2014 is doing the same thing. Did you find out what was wrong with it?
@@TrayveinLewis several videos link this problem to the wheel speed sensors not being able to read the magnets on the wheel bearings. Because the corrode and fall off over time.
It apparently disables everything they relies on computer information delivered from the wheel speed data. Which makes sense. ABS, power steering, and stabilitrack.
Going to hopefully change mine next week if the weather holds out. But a nice side effect is, without power steering my forearms are nicely developed 🤷♂️

No, it would not. If the check engine light is on, it is an additional issue other than the wheel speed sensors.
Do you know if penetrating oil will block the sensor? I just replaced the hub due to noise now the abs light is on.
My personal opinion is that it will not block the sensor. The sensor is magnetic. The electronics are sealed and not exposed to the penetrating oil.

I have a 2010 Pontiac G6 Gt & the light just came on as well as the engine pwr reduced. How much for will a service station charge me?? I'm a paraplegic & can't do it myself. I'm not very good at mechanics since they started putting computers in cars..lol
I doubt mine is this, I just changed out all four wheel hubs. And cleaned each sensor. Is it hard to replace the sensors
I think tracing the routing of the wires would be the difficult part. The actual connection is just a plug, and it’s straightforward.

Mines related to the TCM, the connector for it will not fully engage causing on to it causing these issues plus no illumination with PRND and stuck in 3rd gear and lights up the dash with stabilitrak/abs/parking brake.
@@curedham2963 mine is doing the same thing which is actually the root cause. It’s infuriating. I have an OBD II code reader to remove the error code so I can still drive it. What they want to fix the TCM and the speed sensors within is ridiculous.
I am having the same problem with my 2014 impala.. it comes and goes.. have you fixed yours?? My prndm lights either won't light up or light up wrong and shifts hard then I kill the car for a while and it may or may not go away

If all of the speed sensors and pickup rings are functioning properly, and there are still stabilitrak and ABS errors, I think it would be the result of computer issues.
So I changed Both wheel bearing and abs sensor but the stabilitrak comes on whenever I turn the car right or left.
Is this why my 2015 does not pick up normal? When i hit 48mph it slows down.
I don’t think so. This would only effect the stabilitrak and antilock brakes.
On my 2014 the stabilitrac seems to govern my speed. With it on, I cannot go over 46-48 mph. But I am wondering since when I put it on computer, it tells me that something else is wrong.
See this is my problem in my 2014 Impala....i changed my shocks struts and swaybar links and I was in regular mode for like a week....now I'm back in limp mode and can't accelerate past 49 MPH...and the stabilitytrack service light is back on...
So my dash light went dark my gear sometimes jerks after putting transmission fluid as well as the lights staying on the dash as you named the reason for that so I’ll check it out but how can I fix the other problems
Hard to say in this era of vehicles were the computer controls everything. The best thing to do would be to get it connected to a scan tool and check the faults.

I think this is definitely the place to start. This is the cause/solution for ABS and Stabilitrak warning lights.
The power steering issue could possibly be related or it could be separate. The power steering is controlled electronically (there is no power steering fluid). I am not sure if it is tied into the wheel speed sensors or what specifically would cause it to stop working.
I had the same thing just happen. Did you get the ABS issue fixed and the power steering resolve itself?

The power steering going out is 100% related to this. For some reason when one of your back bearings go it cuts your power steering off. Very stupid and dangerous but, this is what happens with this car.
Where can I get a wheel bearing for cheap?
I purchase them from rockauto.com. They seem to have the best price every time.
I recommend not purchasing the cheapest, weird brand name, you can find. In my opinion, you will regret it a couple months later when it is junk and needs to be replaced again. Go with a reputable brand. I personally use Timken and recommend them.
How do you know which hub need to be replaced
You can bring it to a shop and use a scan tool to determine which sensor is the issue, or jack it up and do a visual inspection of the pickup ring on each hub. The rears are pretty easy to see, but the fronts are not easy.
does this issue cause the PRNDM not illuminate?
Not that I m aware of. I have delt with this abs/stabilitrak issue 3 times and the PRNDM lights were never effected.

Mine was a neutral safety switch and the tcm. 1500 bucks at a shop and it fixed it with no problems ever since

Would this work if my car isn’t starting?
This would not be the cause of the car not starting. And if the car is not starting, fixing this error will not make the car start.
My 2015 impalaLT has abs and traction light on reset faults came back changed out sensor too the right rear in which coder detected problem still exists and when faults are shown I lose my electric power steering next I’m thinking rear hub

A bad wheel bearing should not result in difficulty turning.
The beginning symptom that you will notice is a humming or growling sound when driving, especially when turning because the bad wheel bearing is loaded with additional weight.
So I should start by replacing my steering pump

When this issue happens why does car stall out or not able to accelerate? Meaning my light comes on while driving then all my sensors go to 0(RPM, MpH and engine tempt shows C), then cate sound like it’s out of gear and won’t accelerate?
Mine does this gauges start doing a weird back and forth and stabil track light abs and check engine lights comes on.. couple days later everything back to normal (all lights check engine abs stabil) are cleared..
Mine just started doing this. Hope someone answers your question.

So I started on my driver's side took everything apart the hubbaring the sensor cleaned it all up cleaned out the ring the ring wasn't broke but still put it all back together took it for a test drive the problem continued when I got back to the garage I started to take apart the passenger sign I noticed it was a lot hotter burning hot and that's because the problem it was causing was creating more friction on the brake Disk because it was activating that was trying to adjust the speed on that wheel and so when I took that apart and cleaned it and put it back together and took it for a Test drive And everything cleared and it was working perfectly well But if you're driving it around and it's causing you that problem fill the temperature on each wheel how do they are that's the problem

My problem returned, I have started looking for ground wires that are loose, I didn't find any loose ones but the starter ground wire I loosened it up and tried to remove it, then I tighten it up, the car is doing better after that, but I will continue looking for ground wires and report back.

That would very likely indicate a bad hub assembly, but not that it is the cause of the error.
Stabilitrak service light on. Car won't start or stay on pretty much all electrical won't work but auto start works. But won't let me put in drive or anything??
I would start with testing the battery. The electrical system was doing some goofy things on this vehicle when the battery went bad a couple years ago.

Yes, all four wheels have a speed sensor and a pickup ring on the wheel bearing.

One more thing, the technician told me that if you lose ABS or stablitrack, your power steering will automatically be disabled. Just like me, i lost power steering when these 2 lights came on, once the error was gone after replacing the speed bearing power steering came back.

When I hit a hard bump this comes on and off and turns locks off and on then goes off
Those hard bumps are shaking something that is loose or a weak connection.
My car gave him the abs focus and stabilitrak, I checked the ring of the right rear tire and it was missing parts, I changed it and it remained the same, I checked the other rear tire and it is still missing parts😭
I hope changing the tire on the other side fixes everything

Yes, it is a possibility. That was the cause both times I encountered this. The magnetic pick up ring deteriorated.

Interesting. I have personally experienced the reduced engine power warning. However, that was the result of fuel to air ratio issues. Not related to wheel speed. Completely unrelated to stabilitrak and ABS issues.

Mine did the same thing today . It said service stabilitrak, with a check engine light plus said power reduced.

Yes. Mine in the same as well. When in reduced engine power, the engine will not let me go over 46-47mph. And it also just sucks that gas down. I don't want to take it to a dealer because of the cost.
