  • In this video I show my experience with EEL Battery Company. The promises they made led me to order some of their cells for testing. Here is what I found.

The contact info for my preferred supplier is Jenny Wu. You can reach her at Jennywu896@gmail.com and please mention my channel. I will get a small commission on the sale. I have other videos on my testing of the cells from her.

Ray, thank you so much for introducing me to this company. I have been dying for the opportunity to pay a premium price for substandard cells. Really this company’s wonderfully fluid warranty process only heightens the adventure that is DIY battery building. I cannot wait to start pouring my money down their drain.
In all seriousness good to see you, happy early Fourth of July, glad you had a good vacation, and look forward to seeing the finished products. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing the journey with you vicariously.

Ray, thanks for the honesty and information. I went through Jenny based on your input, and I couldn't be happier. Extremely timely responses and the batteries (32) CATL280 showed up in less than a week! Im opening the boxes now and so far they look absolutely perfect. I hope all 32 cells look as good as the first 6 Ive looked at. Thanks again. (I did tell Jenny that I learned about her services through your channel).

Open and honest from the get go as always Ray, that is why I am a subscriber.
Thanks for posting, this was great information - I too have been "playing Chinese Roulet" ordering in batches of 16, waiting two months for the 'other shoe to drop', so far I have been happy with my purchases. I have worried over each order until the cells actually arrived safe and sound, and tested as advertized.
Like you noted here, I have found that any company willing to talk to me, share test data, answer questions over an extended period of time, seems to help avoid any shady suppliers who don't have the patience. Knowing a company is actually a manufacturer (not just a reseller) also avoids some issues.
Keep em coming: Your honesty and open approach is so refreshing on the net.
    Robert.

Ray, I very much appreciate you having as objective to share the knowledge rather than make money with TH-cam. It's something special. (Also, I think not many can afford to do things like this, because usually people have little money so if they are on TH-cam it can't not be about money, unfortunately, Unfortunately only few of us is comfortable enough economically in order to make TH-cam videos without money in mind but just to sharing the knowledge and such).
I'd say don't feel strange about reviewing products and such. As long as you try your best to be honest about them - why not, you can review any product (in fact, maybe you "should" review products, maybe you are the right kind of person to do that, because in fact you'll be honest about them unlike most others that often are either paid to advertise a product, or they're trying to do the review in a way that those watching it will want to click their affiliate links (to Amazon, to Aliexpress) and buy that...).

Ray people trust you because you are straight up objective and show everything you are doing which is greatly appreciated. You take the time to explain what you are doing and why. The value of that information is off the charts. I have learned a ton of great information and could have found it no where else.
The battery market seems to have divided into to groups. One, is the server rack battery approach and the other is building individual cells into a battery of your own configuration. Rolling your own is a big commitment to time, knowledge, and equipment for testing-charging, etc. As you say there is a much greater risk to buying individual cells.
My goal is to build an off grid system for my house here in Florida. Buying individual cells and making my own batteries appeals to me, plus I can do it incrementally. I think it will be much more satisfying to roll my own system. To that end, if you find a good company you trust we will trust them also. I know that puts pressure on you, but since we know you are honest and wouldn't pull the wood over anyone eyes your best assessment is good enough. In the end you aren't responsible for the behavior of any company and you assessment can only be made from your experience with them. It is a sample of one so don't let that weight too much on you. Just be you, give us your best take and let the good times roll. :-)
The batteries didn't test as you expected, it is what it is. Now we know.
Thanks again for a great video. BTW I will be in the Great State of Texas next week visiting my sister who lives in Copperas Cove near Killeen.

I've bought 64 cells from Docan in the last year, all perfect and in use working fantastic. Did you ask the company how they performed their tests on their cells? If you have a different method to them, your tests would probably be different. A cell advertised as 280ah that gives you 280ah is in my view, a 280ah cell. I’ve just ordered 16 230ah prismatic for my first build from Docan Technologies and hope they are 230ah when tested but I’ll be testing them using their test procedure written down by the battery manufacturer. The cells are currently about 12 months old. About 9 months at time of testing. The LF280K series hasn’t been out for too long. It isn’t like Andy’s issues.

Be aware that EEL has sucked before in Germany due to under performing cells they had delivered. Still a lot of issues with suppliers like those with QSO or Quishou most recently published by andy from the off grid garage who had recorgnied bad comments about their delivery quality.
His video is from 17th of June 2022 and he accused the supplier to have not solved issues with their battery deliveries.
If I will buy I will try most likely Jenny Wu by mail and hope for the best cause on will prowse diy forum I did not find bad comments about her sales performance and delivery, quite the opposite as you had told us too.

Hi again Ray. Thanks for the video. As always your honesty and integrity is very much appreciated. If I remember correctly the batteries from Docan ship from a warehouse in Texas. Am I correct? I’m planning on another set of batteries that will be funded, hopefully soon, with a sale of some property. As you are well aware of the geo-political nonsense that’s going on right now could make acquiring pretty dicey. I’m hoping that I can get the batteries before everything gets sideways. I’d be curious to know your thoughts on this as regards getting these batteries if things should go south. Best regards from Arizona. 🐢🌵

Email Jenny at jennywu896@gmail.com and she can answer your questions about pricing and availability. As far as geopolitical forecasts, I have been studying history most of my life. I am fascinated by watching it unfold in real time. I don't wish to make judgments except to say that it always seems scary to those that have fear no matter the decade. 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, etc, all had their perceived evils that threatened our way of life, whatever that means. Go back further and it gets worse.
I refuse to live in fear and I will continue to prepare for potential risks to my actual survival without placing too much emphasis on my ability to know what those are. The things that actually wreak havoc in our lives are usually things that we didn't see coming.
In the meantime, my happiness is harmed by seeing others as evil and threatening and I am better served when I can be empathetic and spend my energy and time in service of the needs of others.
Well my coffee needs a refill and I need to get moving. Good day and thanks for subscribing.

    • @EKTIMP

Hi Ray I would to add something about this company.
I bought 16s 302ah, and at this time 9 of 16 have been tested with the same charger as you.
      Results for the 9th cell : discharge : 287,00ah ; charge : 287,20ah, tested with cutoff at 1A.
So Bad news for consumers who are interested to purchase 302ah or others because it is not what it is written into the title of the product. It is like I received a 280ah instead of a 302ah. So, people must be informed about this before buying to this company.
Thanks to you Ray for your good job.

Hi Ray, I've just stumbled upon your channel while researching LF280K Batteries.
Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with suppliers. I've been wanting to build a battery for my kayak and thought 4x LF280K Batteries would give me a much better battery than just buying the typical trolling motor batteries available. I'm considering a motor between 500w-1000w and want a battery that will give me plenty of range. Top speed is not my priority, rather long range. Do you think these 4x LF280K to give me 280AH 12V is a good choice? They work out more expensive than a 100AH trolling battery but much greater AH for the money. I'm not sure what the peak draw is on them at present, but will research further before buying.
I have some experience with 18650 cells, but much prefer the LF280K for convenience of building packs.
I'm also very interested in solar and energy storage, so I'll definitely be looking at more of your content and subscribing to your channel!
Thanks for sharing the knowledge, and keep on building!

    • @RayBuildsCoolStuff
      @RayBuildsCoolStuff  ปีที่แล้ว

If you’re going to use the battery for a trolling motor you probably want a pre-built 12 V battery that is waterproof. I thought I had found a good kit for building this is a DIY but the supplier ended up being untrustworthy. I think most of the 12 V batteries that get built are built with 120 amp BMS that can pretty easily give you 100 A continuous. That will more than handle your 1000 W draw that you were considering. It would give you that rate for about 3 1/2 hours. I don’t think your trolling motor is going to use 1000 W though. It’s been a long time since I had a trolling motor but I’m pretty sure they draw a fraction of that. That’s more along the range of a circular saw.

@@RayBuildsCoolStuff Thanks for the reply Ray.
Yes I'd be sealing the batteries in a waterproof box with circuit breaker and bms also. I have a sealed compartment inside my sit on top kayak which I think would be an ideal location for the battery. I would imagine I'd be using peak power very rarely, and maybe only in 10-15 second bursts.

@@barrymcmahon469 in case of a thermal event what is your plan for getting it out of your boat and how will it vent so it doesn’t build pressure? What is the plan for a capsize or sinking? How will you secure the cells during sudden movement so they don’t damage the terminals? These are the design questions I would be thinking about. In an open boat I would have a tether that allowed me to toss it overboard if a problem occurred. I have a friend that used to have a dive boat that did trips offshore. He had a table where people charged batteries while the boat was underway. He kept the table in his direct line of sight. Several times he saw batteries overheating while charging and toss them over board. A fire on board his boat was not something he was interested in being a part of. This chemistry is it known for starting fires but it does have a tremendous amount of energy that can be released if something goes wrong. These issues can be designed around but they do need to be addressed.

@@RayBuildsCoolStuff I know ventilation valves are available for marine battery boxes. I would plan to secure the batteries together with strong strapping and make sure they are a snug fit when inside battery box. I am a little unsure of fitting the battery inside the kayak for the exact reasons you've pointed out. The other option would be to have it strapped securely in the storage area where I can keep an eye on it and toss it over if any problems were to arise.

Did you find any grade A suppliers? I certainly got the impression you only found cheap grade F. What were your capacity tests? I see you saying that you tested your previous cells, but I don't remember seeing any results. I do notice Doncan is no longer advertising "grade A" EVE cells, rather "top grade".

Hi John, all we have is opinion. I will soon share mine in a video on the subject. I have shared test results from the suppliers I have used. I'll try to get a video out on this in the coming week. I have shared most of my thoughts in the comments section in the past but it is a poor way to communicate them. A comprehensive video will be better. Of course, it will be my experience and my opinion for that is all we have.

I have been buying and using 18650 cells for years now and one thing I found and suspect also applies to these cells is, the big commercial buyers will always get the "best" cells purely because of volume. That doesn't mean we get bad cells just that you need to keep in mind that Grade A is a valuable grade, grade B are still good batteries just not perfect, even grade C can be perfectly useable.
As Ray pointed out in the video it's not so much the quality it's the promise of the quality.
I'm sure he has plenty more to add due to his experience, waiting with baited breath.......😉
