you left out he wrote a top selling book on solar power and has a website so people can get more current information. This is why I try not to make stupid comments about a subject I know nothing
Where's your data? Where are your specific references? Can you say "empirical"? Oh sorry...."years of experience"...."read into a ton"...."have tested"..."Google?" .How 'bout books published, huge numbers of followers, exploding website, try advanced degrees maybe? Yeh, rock solid data there...You have certainly sold me. Will simply does it the old fashion way. He proves it.
Great rebuttal to these misplaced comments. So many folks are quick to correct when they have partial information. I appreciate your thorough understanding and help clarifying these folks erroneous information.
Honestly, as a new guy to this stuff, I appreciated this video because it addresses some of the issues people bring up that I have not read in any literature. But they are self proclaimed experts. I don't have the knowledge to dismiss their claims so seeing this helps people like me remember that everyone thinks they're an expert until they meet a real one. Thanks Will.
This is the perfect level of 'face planting' that our society needs more of these days. You're not being outright mean or nasty, but nor are you subscribing to the overly gentle politically correct agenda that continues to allow people to remain misinformed and thus continue to misinform others. You're a beacon of light. Keep it up!
Love seeing guys that just got into this topic because of their e-scooters and new RVs pushing back on guys that have literally lived this specific topics for years. Keep it up Will!!!
Just having built my own three 24v 120ah 8s batteries for my sprinter RV I have noticed that when floating at 28.4v then putting a load on them the voltage drops to 27.1v almost immediately ... Then it will hang there for a long time UNLESS I am running the A/C unit or I have a Large tool ie; 220v Mig Welder or my table chop saw running (Ihave a 6kw 240v invert)... but if I am just camping w/ small loads I could probable go a week of rain w/ no problems... The voltage drops some when I first enable the system but hangs at about 26.5 - 27.1 for a very long time... May I state that I am a complete novice and have built my system by watching and listening to will. The majority of my system was purchased from Electric Car Parts in Utah... (Thanks Carl) ... Will Prowst has been a godsend and his videos are pretty right on... Many Blessings , SMR
Your methods are sound, proven and consistent. The findings are easily repeatable, good scientific methods applied here. I trust your findings, as I have seen your earlier videos where you have honed your methods. You are my "go to guy" for allthings solar. Keep up the good work.
AnotherDayInParadise well these guys thought they were smart was the real issue 🤣 if I asked a stupid question which I have Will was so nice with his answers. I love that he can get Savage if needed 🤣🤣🤣
Ignorance is a lack of specific knowledge and is certainly appropriate in this case. Be sure you understand the meaning of the word, not the common misconception of ignorance implying low intelligence.
You tell em Will, I hate when people jump on and start babbling bullshit, and in the first few words you know that they have there battery chemistriestrys mixed up, or just have no idea what they are talking about at all!!!
In my 30+ year career as an aircraft controls tech and then mechanical engineer and building automation the first thing you do is ignore anyone that starts off a comment with "In my 30+ year career...." 😉 Keep kicking ass and doing what you are doing (helping us all get a little less dumb). It is greatly appreciated.
You’re getting so big, you’re gonna get a ton of “experts” chiming in. You’re an eccentric man which makes you so captivating and refreshing from the rest. Your methods and knowledge is sound.
Eccentric ... definately not . Will is on a mission to help people learn what he has learned . He educates himself buy fact checking and doing actual testing. If the commentors were to do what they say , they would destroy their own batteries . They are fools who would have everyone make the same mistakes as them.
Will you rock! The minute I saw your first video, I was like: THIS GUY HAS DONE HIS HOMEWORK AND CONTINUES TO DO HIS HOMEWORK! You are humble, funny, accurate, up front but also and more importantly HONEST! People who truly follow you get what you're about, enjoy all of your work, and appreciate what you're contributing. You've taught a lot. Keep up the good work.
I'm going to tell you strait up what I like about what you're doing. You have facts and you're not expressing an opinion, and when you do give an opinion, you say its an opinion. A fact can't be disputed. It stands on its own merits. I never argue with my opinion because my opinion is worthless. Only the facts matter. The worse thing someone can do is to try and provide credibility to their argument by telling me they are an EE. and they know what they are talking about. I will relish the opportunity to tell them they should seek compensation for their lack of an education. Disputing the manufactures recommendations and specifications isn't smart unless someone can show test data measurements that conflict with the manufactures data sheet. The only exception to this is UL laboratories safety recommendations, if there are any. They have the final word and shouldn't be ignored under any circumstances.
Hey Will, first of all: Really like your videos, how you explain things and bring the important bits and pieces to the viewer! As a doctorate student in the field of safety of lithium ion batteries, I can affirm that you do have a good understanding and structural approach on the topics. Built my own small solar farm (as a hobby the past weeks) and was lucky to find your channel, especially about some stuff where I needed more info on (MPPT vs PWM, real life data on inverters etc). For the C-rate topic: The rated nominal capacities for cells are measured for a certain current/C-rate, of course with a higher discharge current the capacity decreases slightly due to the DC-IR drop, but I think you also mentioned this. Keep it up, you're putting out great content and dont let those comments get you down!
I had the impression these commenters were challenging data/testing. They are not haters. It's always good to challenge. Ask Steve Jobs? And Will, you are coming across as arrogant in this segment.
Dear i m 100 percent satisfied with ur this video...lifepo4 3.65vpar cell at max and 2.5v per cell min limit ...i have atleast 4year deep research on lithium battery
David is correct, always challenge, always question. It is good practice and it how you learn. But I also agree there is no arrogance in Will’s statements and I can think of no video he has done that he has arrogance. He explains calmly and with evidence his point of view. He also states , nicely, to go out and read the legitimate documents that are out there, which shows he wants you to prove him wrong if you can do so with scientific data. As usual Will, wonderful job.
David Sutherland the problem is the comments he responded to were pretty clearly not based in the knowledge or experience that would make them qualified to question him to begin with. If you’re going to question someone who is an expert in the field, you’d better know what you’re talking about.
Very good Will! I really appreciate how you call out arrogant and cocky/disrespectful language, this type/tone of language often comes from a position of ignorance. I also like how you ask for people to show you proof that what they say is correct, shows that even with your vast knowledge in this chemistry you still have an open mind. Spot on!
Not only do your comments make sense from my own research, they also accord perfectly with my real world experience using this battery chemistry. You are simply doing these tests with a lot more precision. Top work. I’ve just become a fan of your channel.
@@rilufuzz OK, I didn't know that. Sorry. I just call it Li-Ion. Like when I disassembled a laptop battery, those 18650 cells had Li-Ion on them so that's why I call them that.
I really like how your rebuttals are data driven and explained so well. No arrogance or anger on your part. Thank you for your videos. You have no idea how much they have helped me!!
Will, thank you for reading all the comments. Even the bad ones ,blasted out of the water, teach those of us that wish to learn. You have been and will continue to be the best source for unbiased info on lithium batteries on the web
Thank you for your patience, and thank you for sharing. I learn a lot from you and it comes across in your enthusiasm while you teach us. Thank you for all you do.
I love how calm he is talking down to people hahaha. Miss his voice and the long-ass streams he used to make, glad he is doing fine. Really smart guy and everyone should take his advice when it comes to lithium batteries.
Love it. Call them out by name, and then intelligently respond to each. Most people just want to regurgitate some random bit of data that they collected from some random source...yet have no knowledge, experience, or understanding of a subject. People have lost their desire to actually learn. I come here to LEARN. When a source teaches me....then I return. 48 years old, business owner, engineering background, and still desire to learn about my field and other topics that I find interesting. Why does everyone need to be a know-it-all. Learn to LISTEN
I'll admit I don't know the first thing about ANYTHING you talk about. I watch because I see the passion you have for sharing your knowledge. Maybe one day it'll get through my think skull. There is nothing greater one can do in this world than to share knowledge.
Will you saved me literally thousands. The links from your website helped me find a deal on used 250W panels, a pallet of 10 for about 20 cents a watt. They're shipping now and I'll let ya know how it goes after setup. Even if only half work that's an order of magnitude cheaper than renogy. Bought your book on amazon as a thank you for this and all the other good info. Will post a review when it arrives. Keep up the good work and thanks again, you're really making a positive difference for a lot of folks.
Update: got the panels today and they rock. They’re not pretty but man they perform. Rated for 37.6 Voc, actual measured 31 V in 6 pm shade on a cloudy north Texas day. About $450 for a pallet of ten plus shipping. That’s 2.5 kW fellow sun warriors! Go to Wills page and follow the eBay links at the bottom.
When watching (and enjoying) your educational videos I may only understand about 10% of what you are saying, but I have complete confidence in you. Clearly you know what you are talking about and, whenever I need to learn about solar charging and batteries, I turn to you first. Thank you, Will. Keep ‘em coming!
consider doing these more often. I love reading the comment section and sometimes take my info from there because they speak with such 'authority', like they're in the know.
Yeah, when you are learning you don't know what's wrong, and usually you go to the comments to try and learn more. Fortunately will DOES know what he's talking about, but it's unfortunate for people that don't know him and read wildly wrong comments like these. One thing I've learned over the years is that some people just know enough to get themselves into trouble... And they tend to be vocal trying to show off. Running around telling people to charge to wildly incorrect voltages, or bringing up irrelevant effects that can cause you to waste money on unnecessary batteries isn't something a new person can recognize.
First: Thank you for your great work here on this channel! I learned a lot about LIFEPO4 and checked A LOT of facts from different sources! Your work is really great and don't worry about those comments.... It's usually the same all over the net! Please continue the great and very informative work of yours! thx a lot and greetings from Austria
Will Prowse don't let those arm chair "professionals" stir you up. I have followed your videos for a couple of years now. Your love for solar and all that goes with it is second to none.
Soooo frustrating when comments like those are made! I deal with messages and comments like that daily and I sympathize. Thanks for this video! Hopefully it inspires some to do more research before posting. Yea, 0.2C discharge rate for capacity testing is the standard for Li-ion chemistries and it’s not hard to learn that with a bit of reading.
Will, you're proving that the saying, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing" is alive and well. Your annoyance with the instant experts shines through in this video - good on you for responding quickly and effectively. Your videos are the best.
Hi, your are spot on with what you are saying in this video and the processes you use to test these batteries. Some people confuse lithium with lead acid and even think all lithium chemistries are the same. Ps, I am an electronic engineering that designs commercially available chargers for all different battery chemistries, thus if I was wrong about this stuff I would be in big trouble. Keep up the good work 👍
Thank you for making this video. You have done a great job of providing useful and valuable information to your viewers who are interested in learning how to assemble solar systems with battery storage. There is no question that you know what you are doing and have put in the time and effort to learn every aspect of the chemistry as well as the safe and effective use of your tools and testing equipment. Keep up the good work and keep making great videos.
Aastan Hi, Shall I feel offended? I’m from the NIckel Cadmium age.... (ROFL) And I love the school lessons from Will! I follow his video since a long time and really learned so much that I build my own Energy Storage System out of a salvaged Volkswagen Hybrid Batterie. Will, go on as you are. You do great! Regards from Germany
@@Aastan I was thinking that myself! When I ran rc cars and I bought new sub c cells to solder together you had to charge/discharge them a few times before they would put out the rated mah capacity.
Hi Will Thx for the vid. Being a Complete beginner with solar is confusing with all the misdirection on the subject. Having someone thoroughly knowlegable doing beginner videos is great. A separate playlist for beginners is top shelf.
Hi Will - Nice video addressing this issue. I think some of the comments may be innocent in nature and wanting to learn, while others are made out of ignorance or even lazyness. There are so many different chemistries on the market now, it is naive to assume they all work the same. A common message I often give to my younger, less experienced engineers is READ THE DATASHEET. It is remarkable how many people disregard this basic information. Personally I really enjoy watching your videos and find them instructive. I particularly love it when you do a tear down and debunk the claims of some of these "fly by night" vendors. People seem to forget that if something is too good to be true, it usually is. Praise the good guys and call out the rats. Keep doing what your doing man, you are helping us all.
Mahalo, I'm learning and appreciate your straight forward testing with pro and con. Totally trust your opinion. A few years ago, with wrong advice from a local solar dealer on setting up a small solar system, caused a fire in my bus. So now I do my research, double check, and remain cautious on any product on the market. Again appreciate your honesty, and knowledge on these elements and products via your testing.
Hi Will i am just a old bloke in Australia 62 and have found your channel to be extremely informative upfront and honest so i am a big fan of your Vid's as the older i get the Greener i am becoming so we might have something left worthwhile for the grandkids. Hope you are well, cheers
Almost. A God wouldn't have felt a need to call them out by name and would have simply addressed the misinformation. He handled it with a degree of patience and politeness, but there's still room for improvement.
Hey Will, just for your readers (not that they will really care what I have to say) I sent your links to our CTO (solar power company) and he gives you five stars, "really smart". I have worked with this CTO for over 10 years and trust his input and evaluation. You are golden.
Glad you did this and explained the value & virtue of science based testing. Sad to say, but been seeing an uptick in folks that believe in what I call "conflation science" by not respecting the context. Or the crazy argument unless 100.0000% of science agrees there is a legitimate difference of opinion . For chemistry based science it is very well established and testable through microscopic physiology analysis (dendrite migration / computer chip fails). With some science there is by necessity speculation because direct testing is not possible due to scope & scale i.e. supernova's, blackholes, calibri-yau space, etc.
This is one of my favorite videos, where everyone thinks they are an expert on social media and always have to be snarky about it, I love that you corrected them with the "facts" and "science", in such "anti-science", "anti-factual" or "alternate facts" times LOL thanks Will for your videos :)
I been watching for over a year now, and you REALLY know your "stuff". I got interested in this topic because of one of your videos. Continued joy and success.
@wrpiii, now that you've got a year under your belt, navigate to the Endless Sphere forums. This is where actual engineers go to work on their off-duty projects. BMS design, testing using actual standardized protocols, and a couple of decades of real-world performance testing. Spending a year there will show you just how 'amateur hour' most lithium info on youtube really is.
I love these videos. It's a nice way to keep people from falling for disinformation while giving the rest of us a refresher and deeper understanding of everything you've been studying and learning. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Mr. Prowse. Your videos are like condensed versions of whole books and courses in a very well prepared, produced and delivered manner. You are the go-to guy for anything solar related and batteries. It's like college level classes I can in the comfort of my home on my computer. You're a great guy for educating us and putting up with the ignorant haters that seem to troll on TH-cam.
"You have a right to your own opinion, but not your own facts". Will - I think people underestimate your intimate knowledge and expansive knowledge on this topic. Likely because of your age. However, you have a gift to not only "Geek out" in the details, but a sign of a real expert is someone that can put complex information into Layman's terms, and we all appreciate that, especially me! Don't let ignorance upset you, the fact that you came back to disprove ("educate") may have won you new fans, since you took the time to have a conversation, which is more of what we need collectively. Thanks for all you do, Will.
Touché Will! Henderson, NV is lucky to have you. Another smart move with climate and no state income tax. Here in Utah we could learn some things. Well I’ve got your configuration on my kitchen table and I’m buttoning up as we speak. My 400 watt panels are mounted not plugged in on my 1 1/2 inch pvc pipes ( portable stand to be used at the cabin or RV) we have 4 feet of snow on the ski resort we live on and a scheduled plan to BLM near Vegas in 30 days. You rock and my wife says your so dang cute too.
I like this guy more and more! Way to explain without being negative, that's more than most can accomplish. My old brain has learned a lot from you, thank you.
Hey Will, I'm one of your forum members who bought the 280ah cells for $482 to my door from alibaba, (Xuba web site). I learned how to setup a lifepo4 battery by actually following your build guide lines carefully and my battery works great, so far, I;ve only been working on it for a few weeks. Your information is right on if you read it carefully. If there are any confusing parts of the assembly, testing and programming the forum is a big help. Setting up the BMS program is a little tricky but that is because of the poor documentation of the BMS ... it takes a little trial and error to optimize for the way I want to use it. (give up a little capacity for more charge cycles). Anyway you're a great teacher and we appreciate your hard work. jjb (aka ...tomtilly)
So I bought a Lithium 200 amp hour battery off of Amazon for $1,300 to use with my two 200 watt panels. With 400 watts of solar and 200 amp hours of battery my van will have plenty of power 😃 . Thanks Will for the awesome information on how to set this up! My costs were less than $2k.
Incorrect these ones need soaking in water to replenish the boiled off juice from running them at low discharge, its best in salt water as this really excites the molecules into a chemical reaction.. Warning the battery may get very cold during this period so give it some love.
I've literally never once doubted anything you've ever said. You provide all information and facts. You do all tests to spec. You are transparent about every single little thing you do. I've literally watched all your videos. It's crazy how ignorant or misinformed people are.
We really appreciate your videos, please don't get upset by these people who clearly don't know what they are talking about. I've personally learnt a lot from your videos, it is very hard to get these cells here in Pakistan, but I still found a way to get them for my EBike as they are much safer than lithium ion. I'm running 24s1p. thank you so much for making these videos bro.
Hey Will, thank you for all the FREE knowledge and information you share with us! I would suggest those who are critical should start watching your videos and LEARN before commenting.
Nice Will, this is why I watch your work I trust your knowledge I'm a beginner and could tell the people in the comments were obviously talking about lead acid or didn't know what they were talking about I personally appreciate the amount of effort you go to to educate your subscribers on how to build, buy, and maintain a system safely for years to come. Thanks Will.
Will, half of northern ca without power this is a great time to put your videos on Facebook advertising for these counties without power. Hundreds of thousands of people don’t have power for the next few days. I already put your video on my Facebook the one that is DIY solar system. God Bless
@@__WJK__ Same thing. Many dads (I am one myself) get pissed because of "How many times have I explained this?!?" kind of anger. It's a form of frustrated disappointment. I totally get why he is unhappy. He dedicates so much time trying to educate people on his love of solar power, and STILL gets dumbass questions that a similar google search would clear up. Nothing wrong with questions, it's when they come at you like they know more about something which they clearly don't.
10/10 video. People trying to use their Google search knowledge against a person---who I consider---that is an expert in the field. It's hilarious. The Dunning-Kruger effect at its best. Love all your videos, man...I've learned a lot.
Thanks for answering all the research questions we have while looking for our mobile 12v solar system. . Your easily understandable methods and teaching is what us non tech folks really need. Thanks a lot, well done.
LOL! Oh Will, this is why I love you and your channel! A young man with integrity and a genius mind who applies himself consistently to the facts and isn't afraid to call out arrogant know-nothings, by name. And we can see by the thumbs-down that you hit the mark squarely, ha! You're the only one I trust to learn about all this stuff. As always, a true and excellent teacher. Well done!!!
Way to call out these people. It's amazing that they do not know the chemistry and/or discharge. Will I have to give you props on your educational info. Keep up the good work young man. Your work with this chemistry is unprecedented.
A lot of people make a confusion between chemistry of Lipo or LiIon with LiFe, also they got stocked in Lead Acid era! You're doing a great educational job too!
I built my own 150ah "24v" 8 string battery with a Bluetooth BMS by watching your videos. I run my whole garage of it :) Thank you for all the excellent information.
Having worked with Many LifePo4 batteries you are absolutely correct!!!! Given the option I never charge them above 3.5v per cell. If I can set the max charge voltage, I usually only go to 3.4 volts. Most of the DAMAGE is done in the last 0.2 volts for virtually no significance capacity loss. 3.5V is at least 98-99% capacity.
I appreciate the beginner videos linked. I only started watching your videos lately and didn’t know where to start. You should link them in all your videos.
"Because we're not getting rated capacity guys what are you thinking" pulled a chuckle outa me for sure. Way to make an extremely mature and calm "stfu" video for the doubters. Keep showing us the way good sir

I don't have the knowledge to dismiss their claims so seeing this helps people like me remember that everyone thinks they're an expert until they meet a real one. Thanks Will.
Answered with logic and reason, not emotion. Well done.
I wish I could like this comment a thousand times.

This is the perfect level of 'face planting' that our society needs more of these days. You're not being outright mean or nasty, but nor are you subscribing to the overly gentle politically correct agenda that continues to allow people to remain misinformed and thus continue to misinform others. You're a beacon of light. Keep it up!
You are so kind. That was the most gracious debunk I have every witnessed. Thank you! Civility is not dead.

Ignorance in a comment section? NEVER!!! 😂😆🤣
The more someone knows, the more they realize how little they actually know. Ignorance is a constant, ever changing, state of being.
You tell em Will, I hate when people jump on and start babbling bullshit, and in the first few words you know that they have there battery chemistriestrys mixed up, or just have no idea what they are talking about at all!!!
Dunning-Kruger in full effect lol.
In my 30+ year career as an aircraft controls tech and then mechanical engineer and building automation the first thing you do is ignore anyone that starts off a comment with "In my 30+ year career...." 😉
Keep kicking ass and doing what you are doing (helping us all get a little less dumb). It is greatly appreciated.
wow, right off the top name-checking ignorant viewers. gotta love this guy. 😀
I wouldn't ever question you. I'm not that smart, but I'm smart enough to know you are.
You’re getting so big, you’re gonna get a ton of “experts” chiming in. You’re an eccentric man which makes you so captivating and refreshing from the rest. Your methods and knowledge is sound.
Douglas Harley, Please.
Eccentric ... definately not .
Will is on a mission to help people learn what he has learned . He educates himself buy fact checking and doing actual testing.
If the commentors were to do what they say , they would destroy their own batteries . They are fools who would have everyone make the same mistakes as them.
Eccentric?? No way! He's smart, articulate, and enthusiastic; not eccentric. He is my "go to" expert on the topics that he covers.
Will dont let the haters get to you when you get this big the bigger the haters
@TRUST CHRIST OR GO TO HELL! Grow Up!
Spot on!

The 55 dislikes on your video so far are the ones that got taken to school! Amazing job explaining and educating us with FACTS 👍✌😁
Never argue with Will. His knowledge is really good.
He is trying to be a good teacher, which is what I absolutely love about his videos.
I don’t know why anyone would question Will’s battery Prowess! Your presentation and knowledge is obviously NOT superficial. Keep it up Will.
You're the most knowledgeable expert on lithium cells, solar and inverters I know of even 2 years later.
"Watch my beginner videos!" HAHAHA!!! Too good
Will Prowse don't let those arm chair "professionals" stir you up.
My favorite battery guys' views align, once again!
Hi Will
Thx for the vid.
Thank you for all the great information you've given us. Keep up the well researched and accurate reviews !!!

Good one Will. Throw it "nicely" straight back at em.
Thanks for being one of the few that maintains their integrity, Will!
I love these videos. It's a nice way to keep people from falling for disinformation while giving the rest of us a refresher and deeper understanding of everything you've been studying and learning. Keep up the great work!

Will, don't lett these idiots affect you. You have great knowledge of thees battery's and systems. keep up the good work with educating us. Tb
I was told you need to top up the electrolyte with some distilled water. :)
By injecting it with a metal syringe :)
Incorrect these ones need soaking in water to replenish the boiled off juice from running them at low discharge, its best in salt water as this really excites the molecules into a chemical reaction.. Warning the battery may get very cold during this period so give it some love.
