Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio Highway Assist Level 2 Autonomous Driving: How It Works

  • Here's a brief video demonstrating the level 2 highway assist function available on the 2020 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio models. This feature is available on the Maserati Levante, Quattroporte, and Ghibli, but the steering wheel button layout for activation is slightly different on these models versus the Giulia and Stelvio. However, the function works the same on all models - only on registered divided highways (limited access w/designated off/on-ramps), and it will only work in mostly clear weather (daytime or nighttime) in which the road lines are completely visible to the windshield camera and the radar is not obstructed by snow, dirt, or heavy rain. The system will also deactivate in bright sunlight if the windshield camera's view of the road is obstructed by glare. These circumstances are relatively rare on short journeys, but do occur over the course of several hundred miles/kilometers, so the driver must be aware of the road conditions at all times and be ready to take control of the vehicle should the highway assist function deactivate.
The highway assist feature will also recognize when another vehicle in front wanders into the Giulia/Stelvio's lane of travel, and will gently slow the car until the windshield camera sees the lines or the other wandering vehicle moves back into its own lane of travel. This is a safety precaution.
The highway assist feature will also bias the vehicle towards the side of the lane away from another vehicle that is being passed/overtaken. However, this will mainly work when the Giulia/Stelvio is following another vehicle that also biases itself away from the vehicle being overtaken/passed in a neighboring lane of travel.
In general, this highway assist level 2 system is easy to use and eases stress on long highway drives, but it requires the driver to remain attentive in case the system deactivates due to environmental factors, such as poor weather or the windshield camera's inability to read faint or missing lane markings on the road.
Please place any questions or comments related to this video in the section below. I hope you enjoy the video!
All intro and outro (B-Roll) footage was recorded and driving was performed on a closed road on private property.

Thank you for the video...just got a 2020 Giulia Quadrifoglio and I had a rough idea of how to make the HAS work, but this is better. Also, no one mentions that this needs to be done in “D” or Auto mode, doesn’t seem to work in manual. Really, with a Quadrifoglio driving day to day...who wants to be in anything but Dynamic Mode and Manual.

Same system in the new Grand Cherokee L apparently. The one big question I had before buying was if it will bias itself when following and unlike the “salesman” you answered it. I guess I owe you a commission on the car I buy, but I’m not paying for no maintenance plan. Lol. Thank you.

Car reviewers TheStraightPipes complained in their Stelvio 2.0 test that the lane keep gets confused by turnoff lanes if you're in the right lane and it shuts off. Since this happens every exit, they say you can't really drive it in the right lane on highways. What has been your experience?

I have the Guilia it occasionally gets a little confused, but 90% it works just fine.

but why would I want that my car drives itself?! would be more stressed than driving by myself. what's the point here?

Does the traffic jam assist work properly? I mean as far as I understood, when the tja is activated, the car should stop and go all automatically in a traffic jam, following the car in front of you. Yet, what I observe is that it does not get going alone after standing still for a couple of seconds... Is this supposed to work like that?

Most of the rest of FCA vehicles do this, hit resume or press on accelerator and it will continue the cruise control parameters and speed you up. With alpha I expected a bit more autonomy here though.

Say you accidentally steered out of your lane somewhat fast, would it correct it for you or simply not go that way?

It only beeps … and pulls back a little but doesn’t keep you in your lane if your going to another lane ..

seems pretty useless needing to have your hands on the steering wheel the whole time.

I thought so as well....one trick i've learned is if you have nylon pants on and let the wheel rest on your thigh...it stays connected...much better than having your hands wastefully resting on the wheel...dont try this at home...
