      Great point of reference and a great explanation about the AI. I hope to one day own a self-driving car (though it may not come for many years) but that mainly comes from the interest in how they work and do their thing to keep the roads safer.

    • @sebastiane7556

    • @CyborgNinjaJesus
      @CyborgNinjaJesus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +46

      I remember a quote from someone at Mercedes saying that there's too many variables on those situations, so probably they'll go with saving the driver and the people in the car because those they have more control over.

    • @sparkyails123
      @sparkyails123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      If you have a problem with what the AI would do then you have to ask what would you do in the same instance. We all experience situations like these all the time, and there are hundreds of thousands of people dead a year to show for it. Lots of these accidents happen because of HUMAN error. Now I am not stating that self driving cars are going to make all of the death go away, but they may help reduce the number of fatalities every year. We have to at least give these vehicles a chance.

    • @dunhillsupramk3
      @dunhillsupramk3 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      that choice should be the driver/owner to make not a car company or idiots on some comity.... anytime you buy a new car with lvl5 it should ask you the question and whatever you choose then the car will follow... (we know 100% of ppl is going to choose themselves, myself included)

    • @sparkyails123
      @sparkyails123 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @dunhillsupramk3
      Wait doesn't that make your point mute? Why give the choice to the consumer of the vehicle, then if any deaths occur they can and will be placed on the head of the owner of said vehicle. Even if they are not the ones currently in the vehicle. If the car is programmed to avoid an accident at all costs then the but there is a crash. All evidence will be viewed to make a decision afterwords. Also if both or one of the vehicles in a crash or viewing a crash can be used in a court of law to find the one at fault even if its a hit and run.

    • @JosueC730
      @JosueC730 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nope. It's not because you can handle a situation better than a computer. It's because the humans won't purchase a car to never be able to drive it. Driving might always be assisted or completely autonomous depending on the user choice, but it's the computer that will still save lifes in both cases.

    I'd really like level 5 vehicles without user controls available to be banned before we even get to that point because if the vehicle gets hacked which, if they're as useless as current cars with internet access, they will be, then you're outta luck.

    • @dollgen
      @dollgen 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We already have a large dependency on systems which are theoretically able to be hacked by remote users. This doesn't mean we should stop using all such technologies. Obviously care should be taken, but outright banishment is far too extreme.

    • @danielhebard1865
      @danielhebard1865 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bigger issue is the very real possibility that a foolish populous will vote to make anything under level 5 illegal. If driving your own car is eventually banned, I can assure you that many people who love to drive, myself included, will become criminals.

    • @Shipprofile08
      @Shipprofile08 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      that would be an easy fix. I would just program the car to only download updates for its software or GPS maps while at the house connected to wifi (like how you can set your phone to update its apps while only hooked up to wifi to save data) or have the car only hook up to the internet when it requests for an update to its maping system (lets say you drove to a new state and the car didn't have the maping info for that state) but down right banishing it so it doesn't get hacked is not the answer!

    I think the biggest problem with level 5 autonomy is moral situations, for an example, the car has two options, run over a deer or run over a baby. From a human perspective it seems obvious, you run over the deer. But from the cars perspective it's different, the car puts itself and you over anything else which means the car will evaluate which will do the most harm to the car and you, and in that situation the car will drive over the baby for minimum damage. To overcome this issue you have to program every single scenario and outcome, which is almost impossible with modern technology. Of course someday we will see the level 5 autonomous self driving vehicles but I think it will take a couple decades.

  • @deathab0ve

    This is version 2 for anyone wonder. Not the original plan for levels of car autonomy.
    V1 went more like this
    0: Nothing.
    1:Lane and speed assist on highways with large supervision.
    2: Lane and speed assist on backroads as well with large supervision.
    3: minor supervision and GPS navigation added.
    4: No supervision or driving wheel needed.
    5: All cars in existence and the Grid can communicate with one another. Removal of stop lights and stop signs.
    I don't know why the finalizes version didn't add a step 6 for what 5 is in the original plans. They basically just fleshed out the plan. Linus doesn't go into complete detail as there is actually a lot of technical stuff as well. I didn't touch on it either.

    Hi my name is Edna I hope you don't mind me sharing a bit about myself and why these cars are going to take a very important roll in my life in the coming future.
    I was died nosed with cancer in the eyes at 18 months old and thats how I lost my sight.
    While I grew up during my ten-aged and early 20's I always wished that there were such cars that could drive on their own.
    When I got to my late 20's I heard about the self driving cars and self gurgle driving cars so I truely got interested in learning more about these cars then I started doing some research on TH-cam and gurgle, the more information I found out the more interesting it became and the more determine I feel about guying one of these cars to get me around independently and then I'll be forever happy and free.
    Now that I'm in my early 30's I'll bee looking forward to year 20,20 when these cars are out on the markent.

    very interesting
    as someone who drives on a lot of rural roads that a person isn't quite sure are roads, i would never want a car without the ability to take manual control, however for the daily commute or store trips on normal roads a level 5 would be nice.

    After driving my Kia Cadenza for about six months, I am happy with the DA features, but I foresee a very long curve ahead befor adoption of this technology becomes the norm. The main difficulty I see is the lack of readiness of our current highway systems, and the lack of maintenance and poor choices made by those who are in charge of spending our tax money wisely to make safe roads.
    In my car, there is a camera to read the lines in front of the car to keep it between the lines, but so often lines just disappear from lack of maintenance and then I must take over myself for awhile. So my car is quite advanced and excellent, but my roads suck big time. Then there are the seasonal differences, such as no lines when it is snowing heavily or even after plowing when it isn't done correctly.

    IMO:
    At least 20 years until commercial (but not necessarily affordable) versions of Level 5 vehicles pop up in the marketplace.
    10 years until all Tesla vehicles are Level 4, and a lot of other manufacturers have Level 4 versions of their vehicles available.
    Also, 10 years until most of the new cars you can buy, have Level 3 options available (for those vehicles that are priced _accordingly_ even if it's their base (non-autonomous) version).
    Just an opinion. Don't attack me people.

    • @MarkNorville
      @MarkNorville 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is not really a level 4 car though, it is not capable of driving in different areas, the data is being used to make it safe as possible in that area, and mapping every nook and cranny so it would be like driving on a nascar circuit, e.,g a ring, and then taking it to another race track such as Silverstone where the roads bend, it could not learn fast enough. Google are basically cheating at one area.

    • @Yamyatos
      @Yamyatos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Where is the problem? Even tho, Taxi would become pretty niche. Since a level 5 car doesnt need a human, you could always just tell your car via an app to pick you up and drive you home. Taxis would exclusively be for people who dont own a car themselves. But jeah, they would be self driving. Because why wouldnt they.. it's a lot safer.

    one debate is the Trolley Conundrum. If two fully autonomous cars are to collide, but only one can make a maneuver to save the lives in one of the cars, which one will be sacrificed? A car full of seniors, or a car with one budding and prospecting scientist making advances in improving human life.
    Although I don't find this argument fully convincing as both cars should be able to prevent the crash completely, it is a moral debate that does still need an answer.

    If you buy a model 3, mod it and then break it, are you gonna ask Tesla to fix it?

    • @jur4x
      @jur4x 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Why not? After all, if I'm paying for repairs, what's the difference how it got broken?

    • @cpufreak101
      @cpufreak101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tesla has their repair info locked down to their own network of repair centers (literally, even an independent shop can't get so much as what PSI the tires should be inflated to) so it kinda does matter, as they can refuse to fix it if you broke it cause of the mod

    • @mandalada6354
      @mandalada6354 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jur4x an issue of accountability. If you take apart your car and put it back together with stuff missing and stuff added unprofessionally, Tesla service providers could break the vehicle even more while fixing it because not everything is where it should be. Then Tesla would have to compensate in some way. On top of that it's a risk to the servicers. As someone who is tranied to fix a Tesla, I know how it behaves. Even when something breaks, as a professional I would know that it should behave in a certain set of parameters. If you suddenly change how the car operates then as a repair person I am now at risk of the car doing things it shouldn't and potentially harming me. I hope that answers your question.

    • @jur4x
      @jur4x 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Justin Noker. Well there are no official Tesla service centres anywhere in Russia, Ukraine and other ex-USSR countries, and yet people do get their grey imports repaired. And not just tyre replacements. Though, I've heard that some garages in those countries had find a solution for replacement that battery relay that was problematic on early Model S cars.

    • @Yamyatos
      @Yamyatos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well "not knowing how it works" is a hard statement. We know how the science behind it works and we know what we are doing. "We" as in computer scientists or software engineers. However it is true that a neural network is too complex to truly know "how" it works. You can imagine it as an array of numbers per layer, with multiple layers of different sizes being linked after each other. That's what a neural network is. You then put something in and get something out. We know how we build these networks, how we train them, how they "learn" and so on. However, it is hard to tell which number in which layer has which role in making which decision. That's like trying to figure out which neuron in your brain is responsible for you liking cheese. So yes.. we have no idea. Just like we have no idea how our brain works, since it is basically the same thing we are talking about (just that the brain is still a lot more complex and, well, biological).
