  • The Marathon is earned, not given.
I've spent the past 4 months building and training to run a 2:50 marathon. In this video, I take you through my full marathon race weekend and show you everything from the days leading up to the race and the race itself. This is not the story of an elite runner. This is just the story of a regular guy who loves to run and test his limits. This is a story of perseverance and giving your all no matter what.
Thank you all so much for the support you have shown on this series, it means the world to me.

Nico, this brought me to tears. This outcome is far more inspiring than if you would have perfectly hit your goal. You don’t inspire us with numbers - you inspire us with your faith, perseverance, and commitment. This only makes me want to continue following your journey. We don’t resonate with a number; we resonate with your character.

I’ve been following your channel for a while now and it inspired me to run my first marathon last weekend in Cincy at the Flying Pig. My goal was a 3:30 and I was on pace to hit it until I cramped unlike anything before in my life at mile 22. It was so emotionally draining to go from euphoria to devastation in a split second, knowing the training and months of preparation wouldn’t be rewarded with the time I was hoping for. Bottom line, I finished race, as did you. It’s just a number after all. It pails in comparison to the lessons that running teaches us, and you relay these lessons in such a compelling way. Your content is beyond inspiring, and I thank you for sharing your journey with all of us. Best to you and take some time rest.

As a 34 year old mom who just started running, I really loved this. Seeing an elite runner who also has to face the mental battles of running was really encouraging to me. Nico you are one hell of a runner and what you did in that race is nothing short of incredible. Even tho you came up short of your goal you still hit a PR by a bunch. And the great thing about pr’ing is that you just did something you have never done before. So be proud of that and proud of the fact that you battled yourself to finish that race. Ik for sure you’ll break that 2:50 barrier next marathon.

I completely understand the nervous feeling, but what I realized is that once you start thinking about the pain of a race, you have to just stop thinking, no matter what, because if you think too much about the pain then the race is over before it even begins and you will have no mental drive

Im not the type of person to usual comment but this one hit me really hard. I don’t think I’ve ever been able to relate to a video so much. Theres so much pain and beauty in running and the highs are so high but lows are bottomlessly low. You’ve found such a beautiful way to capture that. This video truly brought me to tears. As a runner training for a race, we’ve all had such lows and you never know what all the training leading up to the race will amount too. No matter the result, be proud of what you’ve done. You’ve touched hundreds of thousands of lives around the world. Congrats on the race, be proud of that 2:52!

You're a huge hero, Nico. You inspire thousands of people to start running and to always push forward towards your goals. Once I heard one phrase: "You can be strong from the neck down, only if you're strong from the neck up". And you validate this phrase completely.
You're a big example of passion, consistency, hard and smart work and, of course, mental toughness.
I'm personally from Russia and you're one of the very first runners, who's inspired me to run more, pay close attention to recovery and nutrition. Honestly, everything you does, achieves in your life means a ton for me.
The last thing I wanna say is I'd like to see you achieving more, more and more in your life and getting better every single day. My congratulations. Further more.

I ran the Eugene race this last year as well and I am in your video just before mile 25! Ironically I also ate dinner at the same place and same time the night before the race. I remember running with you on the course around mile 25. I am 51 years old and was trying for sub 2:50 as well and ended up 2:51:39. I have run sub 2:50 barely twice before in 2021/2022. If you cut that much time from Chicago to Eugene, you will get that sub 2:50 sooner rather than later. I find that it took me getting close to running sub 2:50 to really understand what my body needed to feel like to push past that point and hit my goal. My goal for my next fall races (Erie/Indy) is sub 2:48. Thanks for posting this video and good luck at your next race! I see a big PR in your future. Trust your training, and believe in yourself.

I’m a big runner myself and I know that I’m not always going to be at my best but when I watch your videos it makes me feel like I’m not alone. I’m 14 and nationals was the 2-3 weeks ago. I was going to give the 3000m my all but then I realised that I would be in the back half of the race so I decided to throw all of that away and pace my friends on the Victorian state team on pace to break 9 minutes to at least get close to the medals. I did that and 2 of them got silver and bronze medals. They are thankful for me to throw away my dream of being my absolute best and then to help them get a national medal. This is because I thought of you and the way you get through a bad run or race. I love your vids man. Please keep running you will definitely get that time very soon. My dad always says to me “Your time will come when you least expect it.” Please take this, and use it. Love you man keep running. Congrats on the time.❤🎉

Congrats Nico! Your an inspiration and such a kind human being - i really cried the last minutes of the video because i know the feelings man... i preped 4 Months for my race end of april just to get injured 4 weeks prior, run just 12 miles the whole april... the week before the race was so hard, but i kept the hope up, maybe just maybe som painkillers and a good day - i saw a small chance to get through the race even tho it was 32 kilometres and very hilly - and yeh i started and finished: the best run of my life hitting 2:54h in the end and it felt like a miracle, i cried for minutes on my own after the finish line just as you did - the next race is yours and you will hit sub 2:50h for sure!! Keep the vids coming and keep your beautiful character :) Greets from Germany!

I'm not one to write heart felt comments but the fact that you try to read most of them gives me hope you might come across this one. Nico, I used to love running as a kid, at the age of 13 I had made it a habit to run 6 miles every morning without fail for a year straight. I was an ambitious kid. Long story short: life happened. And I forgot what it felt like to truly love running like I once did. My heart was really in that sport growing up and I had lost it all. Years later I'm now 19, and I'm trying to heal my relationship with running and this video was a beautiful reminder of why I fell in love with it in the first place and what my life could potentially look like if I gave it one more shot to becoming an athlete like I once dreamed of being. You're content has an effect on people. Keep it up Nico.

Nico, I just wanna say thank you. That video was so inspiring. I'm a Junior in High School who's been running track and xcountry for awhile now. My main events are the 1600m (4:40) and the 800m (2:00.37) and hoping to break 2 at Regionals in about a week. I really related to you in this video when you talked about pre-race anxiety and fear. I go through the same thing every race, more for the more important races. I know the amount of work I put it but I put so much pressure on myself to do better, get that PR, worrying about injuries, but most importantly that I'm gonna fail myself. Our 4x800 just qualified for states and for the all american Nike and Adidas National Championship. Wish me luck! Imma be going through the same anxiety stuff, probably more now than ever because this will be the most important race of my life. Over the summer while I train for xcountry, I'm hoping to be doing a half marathon and maybe a full one towards the end of the summer.
Thanks again and looking forward to hearing a response, would mean a lot!

You did great! Sometimes we fail to meet our goals because life doesn't work the way we want it to, that's why we try harder again and again until we achieve it. Probably you are not celebrating the goal of the 2:50 marathon, but you should be celebrating the fact that you are able to run a marathon, that you are able to run, walk, and be alive, there are people out there that can even stand or don't have legs so we should be thankful for everyday, especially because not a lot of people can say that they have run a marathon. Keep up the good work!

Great Job!! I haven't ran a full marathon yet only done one half(1:37) and am 15 so don't plan on doing one till college but you have inspired me to be a better runner. So thank you and great job once again. And maybe one day you'll be coaching someone like me in the future and they'll be going for 2:50 or even just running there first marathon. The coolest part after you finished is when you went up to Sophie that was beautiful and just hearing everyone cheering you name and everyone coming up to you congratulating that was truly God's goodness. And Im watching from Indiana.Wow this is totally not my 3rd time adding to this my next half is in November this will be my second one going for anything under 1:37 maybe 1:35 or even 1:30.

    Nico,
Your character and your fortitude is resilient. It's been very easy nowadays to fall into the trap that a statistic should define someone. In reality, those are just measurements. Character is the only true test of performance. And you my friend, crushed it. You pushed through when you experienced the lowest of lows. You served that commitment to yourself. A commitment to push through despite any obstacles. A drive to make it to the finish line when all else was not going your way. And you did it. It is not always about hitting the goal but loving the process. The growth you experience from the process triumphs whatever the outcome may be. Every setback is a another step forward. You are amazing and don't let anyone else tell you different. You trusted yourself when your mind doubted you the most. And you pushed through and accomplished what many would not be able to do. I have been recovering from an injury recently from a running accident and I know the feeling. I was training super hard for a race and this injury completely wrecked all my progress. As I am easing my way back into training, I know that I made a commitment to myself from the start that I will bounce back. I will continue to put in the work and effort because no failure and no outcome will define me. My character and my actions will speak for who I am. And just like you went through your lowest of lows in that race, I am going to serve that commitment to myself that I made in the beginning: keep playing the game. Work ethic doesn't determine sucesss. Success determines work ethic. And success is not giving up. You accomplished something incredible and we will all be here every step of the way. I believe in you, forever and always.
    Best,
    Max

Thanks for this Nico….what an inspiration. I ran my first marathon, Honolulu 2 years ago to celebrate my 50th…have run 5 more in Australia since. I get it….”stay in the fight”
My wife is running her first marathon in 8 weeks. I no longer need to find words to inspire her and keep her focussed. I will simply play your clips to her mate.
Stay in the fight and enjoy the 2:50m when you get there…something tells me there’ll be some type of party with your support crew

I ran this marathon in 2009, with only one other marathon, the Portland marathon under my belt. I bonked so hard at mile 18 that I ended up having to walk and limp for miles and finished a full hour slower than my previous Portland time. It was hotter and my nutrition was off for sure! I was glad to finish, but it was the hardest race I ever finished. There was a crazy amount of "sidewalk" miles, which is hard on the joints. Asphalt is more forgiving than cement is. Also, I found out 14 years later that I had a poorly developed hip, my entire life, that I ended up having replaced last summer. I love watching these videos, and you are inspiring me to start my running journey again. I love the whole BPN team, so inspiring. Thank you (Medford, OR)

You Fkn got it right man. You stayed in there no matter what dug through the dark forest and came out at the end that’s what running is about you can’t always be a pace maniac you just have to go your hardest and not let it break you and you did that and u were only 2 minutes off you should be proud as hell for that time it’s an unbelievable time good shit you killed it

Its always about the journey and not the outcome. Never stop pushing to be the best you can be. You don't set a big goal inside of your reach, you push yourself past anything you'd ever believe you could achieve. Keep grinding and keep pushing yourself to be that person you see on the other side. You will become the person you are meant to be whether you become the person you strive to. Hell, you might be greater than what you set yourself to be now. Never focus on a time too much, I hate myself for it but i mind blocked myself out of my PR 5k time for 4 years and I hope to break it soon, just put in the work and believe in yourself, that's all you can control.

Wow Nico - I have tears all over my face watching this. This video really hit me deeply. You wanted this so badly and gave the 16 weeks of training and the race everything you had. You fought for it. And you came super close! What hit me the most was seeing everyone coming to you at the finish line. Nico, you were not doing this race alone. So many people were cheering for you - wanting you to win so badly. And that's what happened - you won. You did not quit - you gave it everything you had and did not give up when things became hard - that's winning. And like you said, that 2.49 will come. This was just an attempt. Nico, I'm proud and I hope you are too! You rock! G1M

This made me cry. Like really hard, thinking about the metaphor for life that is running. How we work so hard for so long to feel happy and achieve our goals. Race day is just a tiny moment in life that has too many uncontrollable factors. The journey of the training block, traveling for the race, feeling the energy of other runners during training and at the expo. Finally, lining up on race day morning. That’s what really matters-all the struggles, joys, milestones, and fear of the unknown leading up to it.

Omg this brought me to tears. I share all those same emotions, I felt like i was watching a video about me. Pre race nerves; anxious/scared, equating success to a specific time etc. it’s so scary setting a goal and chasing it. I think just doing that in and of itself is a huge accomplishment, whether or not we achieve it. Super proud of you brother, keep chipping away. It’s going to come
