I dedicated this song to my mom once, I always wished she would feel this way about exiting my life. She was an alcoholic, she was a damaging part of my childhood. I never felt this as an amorous love song, I heard it as the goodbye I always needed from her. In the end it was, she always remembered hearing this song dedicated when she lived in another city, she heard me….through Whitney. I’ll always cry when I hear it.

Dolly Parton wrote that song for Porter Wagner, the man who helped launch her career, to get his blessing to move on to bigger and better things.
