I'm not sure if you guys read these, but just in case, I'm 71 years old, I was about 13 or 14 when Paul Simon wrote this song and it's always been a favorite. When I heard Ya'll "Disturbed" do this cover, I actually had goose bumps from head to toe. by the time it got to the end ,I had tears in my eyes. You "Disturbed" have brought a great deal of justice to this great hit, and will carry it's legacy for many, many years. Out of the millions of views of this video, I'm sure at least 1000 are mine. The words to the song, mean as much or more now than when written, so many years ago. Even though I'm not a Metal fan, I will always cherish your version. To say this old man is obsessed with this cover, would be a gross understatement, Carry on, and God Bless ya, and THANK YOU, from a Fan, In Tennessee.
This was one of the favorite songs of my dad, and thanks to it he discovered Disturbed, which then became one of his most favorite music bands ever. He passed away 12 days ago, after 6 weeks of fighting Covid-19. And this song played at his funeral. I love you, Dad. And I miss you so, so much.
Im sorry to hear that.. I know the feeling, the pain never fades, but in time you'll become numb and it becomes easier but the man who raised me has been gone for 7 years now and i still cry every time i see his photo in my wallet or talk about him even this post actually took a good 15 min to fight nack tears but i wont let his name be forgotten in my lifetime it was Billy Carl Tresner So i hope you are handling your loss better then i did but i remember the ancient Egyptians believed that we all die twice. The first death is body. The second one. is the last time someone speaks your name.
This song brings me back to lonely nights staring at the stars while deployed in Iraq in 04.... the sounds of gunfire and choppers overhead overlapped by the sounds of silence in my own head while watching the stars wishing for a peace I couldn't observe...... thank you for this masterpiece...
Ohl Matthew what an experience you so many soldiers all over the world had to go through. Hope and pray these effects are less than lessened over the years for you and everyone else who lived through war like my moms family moved back to Greece in twenties and stayed throughout world War II in the 40s. She went to three wars the ones the Italians. The Germans and then the Civil War made by the communist up till 1949 when they were brought back to America because they were natural born citizens by the state department.. Mon still had those nightmares up till the 60s. Now she's gone and those nightmares are gone too. And my dad was drafted when he was 35 years old and had a heart attack during the blitzgred in London that partly disabled him. I wish you more peace over the years take care brother thank you

I lost my elderly mum just over 4 months ago. I used to play music to her regularly of which she loved this song by Disturbed. She was 92 yrs old and had vascular dementia. Makes me cry when I hear this song but I know she is around in love and spirit.
If she was 92 years old I can tell you right the fuck now, she did not like the that group of players. Simon and Garfunkel was who played this song. Not that shit crap remake of garbage
so very sorry for your loss. I lost my mum 2 years ago and it's as fresh today as it has ever been. Think of the happiness your mum felt in those moments you shared, let that joy into your heart and feel the happiness she must have experienced. You gave her that.

@@DevourmentDay Please let me take this opportunity to express my most humblest and sincere apologies to you. I had no idea that making a light hearted comment about 1 man's voice in 1 song would have such a profound affect on you. I am mortified that I hurt your feelings and totally disregarded your wealth of knowledge. Knowledge you so gracefully shared with all of us. We are all much better people because you were able to list your favourite singers. I hope this apoloy has improved your quality of life. I sure hope that a comment from an obviously uneducated person won't always work you into a tizz. You take care now.
For my people, my city, coffins parading in army trucks ... without the greeting of their loved ones ... only tears in solitude. I love you Bergamo ... we will rise stronger than before
My brother worked in Italy, i went to pick him up in Rijeka,Croatia, when he crosssed border there. He Is well, and doing fine. Now we are quarantined, and i just wanted to listen to this song,,,
His voice is so incredibly soft and powerful at the same time. I remember when I first heard this version on the morning radio. It was a couple of months after my father's sudden death. My dad had been a Simon and Garfunkel fan. I listened to this cover and had to pull to the side of the road as I was bawling my eyes out. It was cathartic. Thank you for helping me grieve with this song.
Sorry for your lose! Live every day like dad is behind you, and make him proud because of you. I can't even imagine to lose someone from my close family, but I am fightting with my own... because I don't have time for them and I know I will regret once.
@@Gwen34900 wow Gwen I don't know how to say something here.. I feel deep in the painful area of my body the depth of what you said but you and your father.. I can't express any more into words the feeling in my soul can't be explained adjust know that music brings back so many hurts and loves
He’ll always be there.. The sudden pick up of a wind gust, that’s him flying by, you may hear his voice from time to time, smell his scent… He’s talkin to yah buddy..
Experienced. That is the only word to describe hearing this song. You don’t “listen” to it. You don’t dance to it. You EXPERIENCE it. S&G gave us the poetry, David Draiman gave us the warning.
We played this at my uncles funeral after he passed on Christmas Eve. He loved disturbed. I miss you Uncle Mark Edit: thank you for all the love you guys, y'all are the greatest. Edit: happy birthday uncle mark. The family got together and listened to this song. We love you.
When I was a teenager back in the 70's I recall my dad saying that in 20 years the young people would laugh at my music just like I laughed at his. Now 50 years later I see kids listening to Led Zepplin and wearing Pink Floyd t-shirts and singing "Sound of Silence" I gotta say, Dad (RIP) you know I love you but they don't laugh at our music, they just remake it.
It's 2024 and I'm back at this song, trying to have energy for a new year. All of my friends are enjoying new year, and I'm sitting in a room next to them crying, trying to convince myself that I do not want to die today, I didn't eat in 2 days, but this song gave me hope again and I will try to do better.Thank you for this beautiful song, it was a shit year and the next one i hope to be better. If everyone feels the same as me, let's try to be positive and see the new year as a new chance. Happy new year
I hope you know you matter, your loved, and cared for. You're needed in this world. I hope you find peace within yourself this year. I know it's hard, but hold on, love, you aren't alone, even when you are. There's a world full of people that understand how you feel. 🫶🫶🫶
I hear you. Lost my mom in September. Sister hasn't talked to me. My daughter and my grandkids won't talk to me. I wish I knew why. All I have is silence.

I hear many versions of songs from many different bands. You guys absolutely freaking nailed this!!! If my 73 year old mother who’s loves Simon & Garfunkel loved this version so much she cried then hats off to ya!! You won her over which was impossible. My mother and I now have a song we crank up together on our way to church. Thank you so much. 👍👍

I'm 66. I was a 6-year-old girl when the debut album was released with this song on it. The song has resonated throughout my life and then when I saw this video I was struck dumbfoundead in so many ways. I watched it again tonight and it reminds me precisely of a book we were assigned to read in grade 10 english. A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter M Miller. A post-apocalyptic novel. If you even read the description you will see what I mean. So many of us from that time period are commenting here because we know what life was then, what it is now and what it will be in the future. 😢
fourirons213 that just proves that even these heavy metal guys that yell through 90% of their song are much more talented than the bubble gum pop crap and hip hop and r&b where 100% of their music is auto tune. This is coming from a guy who grew up listening and still listens to country.
It's fun to see how many of them can actually sing. The dude from Slipknot can sign his fucking ass off too. Check out Stone Sour.... his other band. It's sorta like this on some tracks.
David may never really know how beautiful and powerful his voice is. This version brought meaning to the song, I lost my sister to cancer, may God bless those who have fought, lost and won the victory of this dreaded disease.
This version of Simon and Garfunkel's song echoes the times in which we now find ourselves... Dark, disturbing and full of rage. I love David's voice, absolutely flawless.
I'll respect your privacy, Pardon me for writing in your comment am impressed by your personality. I admire your kind demeanour. I mean It's quite impressive the way you expressed yourself, and I can tell you are an easygoing person someone worth spending time with. sorry if this sounds weird, but I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friends.
If you like THIS version...go find the one from Conan O'Brian's talk show. If at all possible, play it through a really good sound system...one that'll rattle your bones a little. I simply can not get past that first lift without sobbing uncontrollably. Very few pieces of music can do that to me. I'm not going to do it tonight, because I've had a long day and, truthfully, it's a bit exhausting to listen to and watch. But, damn, when I need an emotional cleanse...David Draiman, on that night, sick as a dog with a high fever, (as the legend goes) threw a performance that belongs upon Mount Olympus...but it was given to us mere mortals!

Hello, darkness, my old friend. I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping, Left its seeds while I was sleeping. And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains Within the sound of silence. In restless dreams I walked alone. Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp. I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night And touched the sound of silence. And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more. People talking without speaking. People hearing without listening. People writing songs that voices never share. And no one dare Disturb the sound of silence. "Fools," said I, "You do not know: Silence, like a cancer, grows. Hear my words that I might teach you. Take my arms that I might reach you," But my words like silent raindrops fell And echoed in the wells of silence. And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made. And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming. And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls And tenement halls. And whispered in the sound of silence."
Easily the best version of this song. In fact... this particular video is probably the most artistic & powerful music video ever produced. Absolutely masterful. What a horrible place the world would be... without music.

And the sign said "The prophets have written on the subway walls and tenement halls". Reminds me of when Bob Dylan went to the Vatican. The ushers kept him from approaching Pope John Paul II (now St John Paul II). The Pope put his arm out to block the usher and reached out for Dylan saying "Let the prophet come". He knew from the words and soul of Dylan that he was a prophet. True story. I think this version of Songs of Silence is really speaking to peoples souls. It does mine.
Not a huge fan of disturbed. Like a few of their songs, but most of them felt generic over the years, but holy crap this blew me away. Glad to see that he gave the song the respect it deserves, while still making it his own.

I turned 67 this past year, and I well remember summer afternoons in the hayloft, with my tiny little turquoise transistor radio that my older Sis had bought to me....listening to Simon and Garfunkel. This song shook me then...and this version shakes me more. It is pure perfection.
Paul Simon who wrote this song (and who wrote all the songs-lyrics and music for Simon & Garfunkel) apparently saw Disturbed performing this song on a late night show and contacted the band saying he was very impressed by their "powerful " performance of this song.
I think that most artists don't get upset, when they see another band doing one of their old songs. If anything, it should be flattering to know that your message is still relevant, even if the actual way it is sung, gets updated to a more modern beat and rhythm. In most cases, it is easily recognizable as derived from the original, with many of the basic patterns of notes and melodies being maintained, if slightly altered in tempo and range. This song is a perfect example of that and it goes to show, that another artists vision of the song, can even improve it, from the point of view of the younger generation and sometimes, even the original generation of listeners. However, there will always be those who prefer the original. I like both versions, but Disturbed's version is better, in my opinion. I think the power of the voice behind the message is what Paul recognized. The message was given strength.
Trent Reznor from NIN said the same thing to Johnny Cash about the song "Hurt." At first Reznor was a little put out because of how personal the song was to him but after he heard Cash sing it and saw his video for it he told him this is no longer my song it's yours.
I'm 62 years old. I had become a Disturbed fan with Down with the Sickness and Paul Simon had been my main man since I was 10. I was so effing ecstatic when you covered this fantastic Simon and Garfunkel song!
Same here. My dad always played Simon and Garfunkel and collected Paul Simon's work there after. Always my fav then in my teens I discover Disturbed and just fell in love with their sound then they do this song..Fell over the moon with this one. I love love love this song💖💖💖💖

June, 2024 as the world burns, literally and figuratively. I was 15 when the original came out and have loved it all my life and so was very surprised, at the age of 76, how much I liked this version. I was fully expecting to hate it until I got the message from him. Here's why :::;;; politically, I've seen practically nothing change politically in my lifetime for 60 years. Paul Simon gently, politely asked people to pay attention to what's going on around you. But no one has listened for 60 years and so Disturbed comes along:: and they're not softly ASKING you to pay attention, they're fucking ORDERING you to listen, to pay attention, they are tired of people still not listening to what's going on around them 60 years later. He's pissed, it shows, and I agree. He's telling you/ us to pay attention to what's going on••••••right fucking now.❗❗

I’ll be honest. When I first heard that Disturbed made a cover of this song, I was highly sceptical. I love Disturbed, but hearing that they were doing a song by Simon and Garfunkel left me thinking that they were going to end up butchering the original. But then I went in and listened to this song and, let me just say, I was blown away. I’ve now heard this song more times than I can count and everytime I hear it, it’s just as amazing as when I first heard it. I will always love Disturbed, regardless of what other people say.
Couldn't agree more! I usually hate covers, along with movie remakes. This is the exception! There is so much power and depth, so much more than the original. I'm old, remember the lyrics to most S&G songs lol. Hate to admit that I prefer this but I do! Listen to it 2 or 3 times daily lol. Amazing voice and the video is wonderfully dark, just perfect
Beat my opiate fentanyl addiction. Carried this song for a long time. This one hit hard and did its job. Love and respect to all of you. Always hold on. Always.
I feel you. This to me is God himself thru Disturbed warning us. There are battles before us and there will surely be loss and pieces to be picked up. But in the end...He sends help. God has already helped you. I too need help. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, this is astonishly powerful. I've been a hardcore Paul Simon fan my entire life and know next to nothing about Disbturbed, and this is easily the best cover I've ever heard of any of his songs. Definitely in the top five of covers, period. Like others have said, it gave me goosebumps and left me with tears in my eyes.
I feel this song so much right now. I lost my mom almost 3 years ago. And then, I lost my dad not even a full 6 months later. And I miss them so much. And my wife and I, have had problems. And she left for a lil' bit. But, she came home to me. And I'm tryin' so hard. To not have a breakdown. But, it's difficult to keep myself goin'. When, I don't understand what God's plan is for me. Especially, goin' through so much in the last almost 3 years. And I'm still hurtin' inside. And I'm tryin' not to push people away that I know love and care about me. That keep me goin'. It feels like I'm goin' outta my mind at times. And I'm just tryin' to hold on.

Jesus Christ is the love of your life. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: Matthew 7:7 ✝🌅 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. Disturbed absolutely rocked this song. This song sends chills down your arms everytime and brings a tear to your face one of the most powerful songs ever made
It's just a matter of taste. The message itself, instead of original or a cover, is beautifull. And there it's end at the songwriter. Songs like this...is just a tribute in my eyes.
I don't disagree with you, but the original was also awesome. There are a LOT of covers floating around and I find this one I would put on my playlist, whilst most others I would not bother with.
Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."'
@@Spectrum_Country1028 Best wishes to you, to be able to break through that silence, and make progress in communications. If you've never heard it, listen to a song called "Father and Son", by Cat Stevens. It might help you, and your father. Best wishes
I can’t believe this is going to be 6 years old this year. I feel like this song has only been around for 3 years but at the same time it’s a classic that sounds better everytime I hear it
@@outdoorswitho5 it most definitely is not. Much like Johnny Cash singing Hurt, sometimes a new performance transforms a song into something better. This is one of those songs.
Forgetting Iron Maiden? Honestly though David is a fantastic baritone singer that doesn't get nearly enough credit for his voice, early on he made some comments that rubbed people the wrong way and until relatively recently a significant amount of the metalhead community wrongfully wrote him off as a cheesy prick. Fantastic singer and especially these days a really cool guy who isn't afraid to admit his mistakes, mad respect for David.
I don't understand why everyone makes a big deal on where they came from. who cares where you heard it. it's all about loving a truly great remake of a beautiful song and disturbed deserves all the respect and recognition.
Oh shit...I got a whole new meaning out of this cover. His intensity and deepness brought more of a frustrated and angry feel for the state of humanity. I just love how the lyrics are so applicable decades after this song was first written - I have a feeling it will be applicable for years to come.
Liz Xu. I couldn't agree more. Paul Simon rolling into New York at the youbg age of what. 21. When he witnessed and took in, and then wrote of his experiences. Yes more anger and frustration in the state of humanity decades later, sad in itself. When I first heard of this remake I didn't think I would care for it. I was wrong and can't quite listening to it again. Perfect tribute to a genius's work of art.
There will be a time when we'll not sing any songs but still be as frustrated about the state of humanity as you were while listening to this song. That time is near. I only hope that I don't make it to that time ever.
This was my dads fav song, he loved S&G and he passed this pass January, I felt broken as I was the one who found him. Maybe two days had passed and this video showed up in my feed, God did I cry and I still get a big lump in my throat when I hear it. This is so beautifully done, I love his voice, you can just FEEL the emotion. It has forever changed the song for me but in a good way, I love this version. And I like to think my dad sent this to me to say "I'm still here, listen for me in the silence" ❤️
To me, this song is about a lack of empathy and in our silence we can't share empathy or don't. This sound is more true today than it was in 1966. Neon God is the media on TV, radio, social media and their negative opinions on truth music. If we can't listen, nor communicate with each other without some form of empathy to hear it. We hear music but do we really listen to the lyrics as much as we should?
Sherman McClesky You really need to learn what it takes to be a "Rock" or "metal" This rendition has no focus on drums guitar and at best a good voice that borders on screaming like a petulant child,
Metal is defined by who ever listens to it. Metallica is seen as metal by most but is seen as rock by "post core black metal alternative" types. Honestly I see it as if its heavier than Ozzy then it's metal.
I only wish my father got to hear this before he passed away. He loved S&G, with this being his 2nd favourite song (I Am A Rock his favourite). He was also a big, big Opera fan and particularly enjoyed Pavarotti. He would have loved, loved hearing this cover and I can see him now, eyes closed, conducting the music, with a joyous expression on his face while he experienced the music with all his senses. Makes me want to smile and cry at the same time.

I'm always skeptical when it comes to S&G covers. I tend to regard them as ... almost sacred, not to be messed with... but, this cover - I love it. You totally GET the song. The feeling, the emotion, the meaning, everything. This is truly a magnificent interpretation.
I couldn't disagree more, but repsect you opinion. For me, I think replacing the very REAL and subtle meditation on REAL death, wth the performative (almost pantomime) faux-edgy and faux-dark metal cosplay aesthetics, and straining to seem all doomy.... is absolutely not getting it at all. At all. It's like if Michael Bay directed a remake of 'Apocalypse Now' . I'm sure the intent is heartfelt, but it cheapens the song with overcooked gurning and melodrama.
Definitely one of the most dramatic and re-interpreted covers I have ever heard. It really brought the lyric to its peak with raw emotion. Excellent vocalist!
@Grim Reefer He's actually on the border of screaming but if you go find a live version (I know you probably won't) and watch his breathing - he's singing and in full control the entire song.
Grim Reefer I think it's beautiful and compelling. The contrast to the original really speaks to the message of the song, imo. It's a perspective thing I guess.
I'm a fairly big music snob, especially when it comes to covers. Simon & Garfunkel are iconic. David Draiman gave this song absolute justice. I've always adored the original (and still do), but Draiman's version is chilling. It gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it, and that takes a real artist. Thank you for creating this amazing rendition, David. Incredibly beautiful.
+Wednesday Camille I need to listen to this and see the video every few days, since I discovered it a few months ago. You describe my own reaction quite well. Such power!
+Wednesday Camille yes I could almost "cut and paste" your post...as an old skool S'nG' fan...I feel there are certain songs, certain things in life, that you just don't fu## with...unless you do it very, very well. And yes! DISTURBED does these classic -remakes like they were meant to in some cosmic prophecy fortold. This is what they do, and they do it better than anyone...LAND OF CONFUSION was more about hard driving power, here in SOUND OF SILENCE - the errie, yet beautiful, haunting sound blended niceley with the power of the vocals/power of the words with beautiful creshendos of cybals and timpani...:)
I've always thought the original version was so perfect that I never liked any cover, even live versions didn't hit the same way, but this... holy shit. It brings all the power and sadness of the original, but then takes it home, it's as if S&G's was a pleading for people to listen to the warning, and this starts off with the sad recognition that nobody did listen and then explodes into a desperate anger that nobody ever will, and all the hope from the original is now lost, replaced by... silence. And the visual... the musicians and the writers so close yet so far, the completely dead and abandoned world, once again just reinforces how there is no hope, nobody takes the warning, and all these years later it's all the same, it's all worse. I have goosebumps all over and tears in my eyes, I don't remember the last time a song moved me this much.
I honestly cannot stop watching this video. The singer is so intense, yet comforting in some way. The song has always been a favorite of mine but this version blows the original out of the water. So much power and such an awesome message.
Listening in '24. ""Fools" said I, "You do not know, Silence like a cancer grows, Hear my words that I might teach you, Take my arms that I might reach you", But my words, like silent raindrops fell, And echoed in the wells of silence, And the people bowed and prayed, To the neon ORANGE god they made, And the sign flashed out its warning, In the words that it was forming, Then the sign said, "The words on the prophets are written on the subway walls, In tenement halls" And whispered in the sound of silence

I'm so sorry your loss. ❤️
He now resides with the profits and God almighty.
Im sorry to hear that.. I know the feeling, the pain never fades, but in time you'll become numb and it becomes easier but the man who raised me has been gone for 7 years now and i still cry every time i see his photo in my wallet or talk about him even this post actually took a good 15 min to fight nack tears but i wont let his name be forgotten in my lifetime it was Billy Carl Tresner
So i hope you are handling your loss better then i did but i remember the ancient Egyptians believed that we all die twice. The first death is body. The second one. is the last time someone speaks your name.

My condolences. RIP.
This song brings me back to lonely nights staring at the stars while deployed in Iraq in 04.... the sounds of gunfire and choppers overhead overlapped by the sounds of silence in my own head while watching the stars wishing for a peace I couldn't observe......
thank you for this masterpiece...
I hope you well, my friend!
I wish you more peace over the years take care brother thank you
Oh dear friend George, your history is even worse. I hope you live well these days...
Sad that humankind still has to fight wars I pray for all of us

Hello! 🙌🏼🥳🙏🏻
Hi
I lost my elderly mum just over 4 months ago. I used to play music to her regularly of which she loved this song by Disturbed. She was 92 yrs old and had vascular dementia. Makes me cry when I hear this song but I know she is around in love and spirit.
I'm sorry for your loss. This is a beautiful song to remember her by
If she was 92 years old I can tell you right the fuck now, she did not like the that group of players. Simon and Garfunkel was who played this song. Not that shit crap remake of garbage
I believe she's still around you. She still loves you.❤
Sorry for your loss, may she be resting in peace, may her memory bring you more smiles than tears.
so very sorry for your loss. I lost my mum 2 years ago and it's as fresh today as it has ever been. Think of the happiness your mum felt in those moments you shared, let that joy into your heart and feel the happiness she must have experienced. You gave her that.
The range of this guy's voice is incredible.
If i could sing like this I would charm little old ladies and scare little children

You just blew my mind.
Well friends, that time may be upon us......
I don't think this was meant to be an actual prophecy but, each time I hear the words it sounds more and more like a warning for today.
It was a warning from long ago but revisited bc the first time no one heeded the warning
It's how prophecy is made most of the time. Unintentionally
Insane coincidence right when I read over the word "prophecy" in your comment, he sang "and the prophets". Coincides like are so scary
@wilpse Its marveling and scary when it happens. 'synchronicity". Peace

Experienced. That is the only word to describe hearing this song. You don’t “listen” to it. You don’t dance to it. You EXPERIENCE it. S&G gave us the poetry, David Draiman gave us the warning.

Amen!!!
I'm a 2000s kid, and yes accurate but I prefer your version. I wish I was born in the 70s.
I think you're just like your father - generalising "young people" as if it's a single person.
Absolutely.
My grandson wishes he was born late 60s...early 70s.
This song choked me up, because i sort of interpret the lyrics from the perspective of a WW1 soldier walking among fields of poppies.

I love the calmer voices of these heavy metal guys. Idk what it is but it just sounds sooooo good.
fourirons213 that just proves that even these heavy metal guys that yell through 90% of their song are much more talented than the bubble gum pop crap and hip hop and r&b where 100% of their music is auto tune.
This is coming from a guy who grew up listening and still listens to country.
biker932012 Never thought of it that way. There are a few bands out today that are truly talented but they're very hard to find.
It's fun to see how many of them can actually sing. The dude from Slipknot can sign his fucking ass off too. Check out Stone Sour.... his other band. It's sorta like this on some tracks.
stone sour is amazing
fourirons213 yes it put me to sleep
I still can't get over how damn good this version is, not something at all I expected from Disturbed.
Or literally from any other singers!!
Well, he WAS classically trained according to him. He just feels most comfortable doing metal I guess
That’s right.
David may never really know how beautiful and powerful his voice is. This version brought meaning to the song, I lost my sister to cancer, may God bless those who have fought, lost and won the victory of this dreaded disease.
i know right
lol
This version of Simon and Garfunkel's song echoes the times in which we now find ourselves... Dark, disturbing and full of rage.
I love David's voice, absolutely flawless.
I'll respect your privacy, Pardon me for writing in your comment am impressed by your personality. I admire your kind demeanour. I mean It's quite impressive the way you expressed yourself, and I can tell you are an easygoing person someone worth spending time with. sorry if this sounds weird, but I can tell you're a very positive person. If it's okay with you, I'd love to be friends.
Which is why Disturbed's version is so perfect. Unbelievable!

I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping.
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence.
In restless dreams I walked alone.
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp.
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking.
People hearing without listening.
People writing songs that voices never share.
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know:
Silence, like a cancer, grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you.
Take my arms that I might reach you,"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming.
And the sign said,
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whispered in the sound of silence."

But then Dylan openly said the he has a deal with the lord chief of the otherworld 🙃
Dylan sold out...caved to the enemy that controls the earth. Peace though.

Paul Simon who wrote this song (and who wrote all the songs-lyrics and music for Simon & Garfunkel) apparently saw Disturbed performing this song on a late night show and contacted the band saying he was very impressed by their "powerful " performance of this song.
I remember he told disturbed once that "this was his song now, not mine"
@JamesRichmond yeah and David was crying it got emotional
Nowadays , nobody can just cover a song in a late night show without asking the copyright question .
This story seems a bit constructed ...
I'm 62 years old. I had become a Disturbed fan with Down with the Sickness and Paul Simon had been my main man since I was 10. I was so effing ecstatic when you covered this fantastic Simon and Garfunkel song!
Agreed. 100%
Same here. My dad always played Simon and Garfunkel and collected Paul Simon's work there after. Always my fav then in my teens I discover Disturbed and just fell in love with their sound then they do this song..Fell over the moon with this one. I love love love this song💖💖💖💖
I read that Paul Simon was really pleased with this cover. It's amazing!

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence

You're absolutely right. I love it.

Sad to say but I actually like this version better than the original and I'm not one for remakes.
It's an awesome take on the original. In fact it's better.

Wow, this is astonishly powerful. I've been a hardcore Paul Simon fan my entire life and know next to nothing about Disbturbed, and this is easily the best cover I've ever heard of any of his songs.

Edgy is a compliment. "Normal" is boring.
This is the most beautiful rendition of this song I've ever heard. SO much more intensity and feeling than the 'gentle' original..

It's just a matter of taste. The message itself, instead of original or a cover, is beautifull. And there it's end at the songwriter. Songs like this...is just a tribute in my eyes.

Garfunkel once summed up the song's meaning as "the inability of people to communicate with each other, not particularly internationally but especially emotionally, so what you see around you are people unable to love each other."'

@@outdoorswitho5 it most definitely is not. Much like Johnny Cash singing Hurt, sometimes a new performance transforms a song into something better. This is one of those songs.
Wow, mixed opera-like singing and a metal vocalist's voice combined...so it really is possible 😮
Most properly trained metal singers can actually.

Oh shit...I got a whole new meaning out of this cover. His intensity and deepness brought more of a frustrated and angry feel for the state of humanity. I just love how the lyrics are so applicable decades after this song was first written - I have a feeling it will be applicable for years to come.
Liz Xu actually the fact that it will still be relevant decades later is what makes it so haunting.
Liz Xu agreed
There will be a time when we'll not sing any songs but still be as frustrated about the state of humanity as you were while listening to this song. That time is near. I only hope that I don't make it to that time ever.
Liz Xu to be fair it kinda pisses me off that this song is still relevant half a century later
As a woman who grew up hearing my parents listen to Simon and Garfunkel…this is how a really man makes this song great! 😍

It's rock songs like this, that kills the myth that rock stars only scream, but they don't really sing. Very well done.

Sherman McClesky
You really need to learn what it takes to be a "Rock" or "metal"
This rendition has no focus on drums guitar and at best a good voice that borders on screaming like a petulant child,
L.S. Pig Sorry not metal NO guitar solo. just screaming.
john smith metal doesn’t necessarily need a guitar solo and it’s not necessarily screaming either. It’s just aggressive sounding music

I'm always skeptical when it comes to S&G covers. I tend to regard them as ... almost sacred, not to be messed with... but, this cover - I love it. You totally GET the song. The feeling, the emotion, the meaning, everything. This is truly a magnificent interpretation.
the Bangles did a hell of a cover of hazy shade of winter in the 80s
This song was my intro to Simon and Garfunkel way back in their '60s....it meant so much to me then but this is a transformation...POWERFUL!!!!
Agree
I couldn't disagree more, but repsect you opinion. For me, I think replacing the very REAL and subtle meditation on REAL death, wth the performative (almost pantomime) faux-edgy and faux-dark metal cosplay aesthetics, and straining to seem all doomy.... is absolutely not getting it at all. At all. It's like if Michael Bay directed a remake of 'Apocalypse Now' . I'm sure the intent is heartfelt, but it cheapens the song with overcooked gurning and melodrama.

This makes you want to run away? If I may ask, why?

This is brilliant, awesome and otherworldly! I was in my teens when this was first released. This is better!

This is one of my favorite Simon & Garfunkel songs. This version that you do is the icing on the cake. So *EPIC* it gives me the chills.
