Red, white or blue Solo cups. Cheap compared to nursery pots. I used them last year to sell my culinary herb plants. Bought white labels at Dollar Tree to I.D. the plants. I had a Mother's Day sale on Saturday. Sold out by 10:am. I could have sold twice as much. It was buy 4 get one free. I'll do it again this year. Most of the plants were done from cuttings and I bought the seed last year for the annual herbs.

@@melissabean8144 all plastic straw’s, takeaway cups like the ones you said, plastic cutlery and non reusable shopping bags have all been banned from sale. Because they end up in the waterway and alike. It’s sad that in such a highly populated country like yours that you don’t have these rules.

My parents used to sell plants every spring at a yard sale. People looked forward to it and missed it when she went into assisted living after my dad died. She grew vegetables and flowers and divided her perennials for sale. She would give kids free marigolds whether their parents bought plants or not. She wanted all kids to grow something in a garden. Thanks so much for this guide. I took notes and will be figuring exactly what to start when and get myself going. I'll watch the other videos too. Thanks again. I am so ready for Spring. Starting seeds always makes me so happy. And maybe I can pay for my garden this year and possibly expand!

Had my 1st plant sale last year during our neighborhood garage sale. I also grew bird house gourds the year before that I made into bird houses. Some of the bird houses sold for $35.00.
One thing I did was put out a sheet of paper and asked people what they wanted for plants next year. Had pretty good response to that, and a better idea of what people were looking for.
With the bird houses, I brought in about $600.00. Hope to do more this year.

I purchased most of my pepper and tomato seedlings at a garden garage sale. The seller practically had a farm in her backyard. The seedlings I purchased for $4 each were the best growers last year.

I had a plant yard sale last year and no one bought any. The sale was the first Saturday in May. I had tomatoes and peppers. They looked great but I lost money. It's a great concept but it didn't work for me. I advertised on FB even. They chose the garden centers over me. No clue. It was really disappointing.
For success don't grow anything you can buy in the nursery or store. People will not visit your home unless you do unique and lower costs than anyone else.
Thanks Gary for new ideas! I’m same zone as you. For this year I visited Amish farm supplier to stock up on the containers. Also first year I got to study what my local community values, and I’m going to grow only those this year.

Saturday I will be having my first plant yard sale thanks to your videos! I’ve plastered it everywhere and had a good response so far and even made a few presales and even orders. I sure appreciate your advice! I need some gardening tools and hope this helps me achieve my gardening goals this year!
Nice! I've just recently finished re-watching your previous seedling sale videos. I've sold a handful of extra plants the last couple years, but this year with wanting to add some cattle panel arches to the garden I'm hoping to sell enough to offset the cost of the panels and t-posts. I also found a local gardening group and having some extra seedlings means I'll have some to swap - which isn't selling but definitely could save money by allowing me to try out new varieties without buying seeds. In my neck of the woods the squash vine borer has wiped out what they will by the end of July and I started a flat of extra squash in June just to prepare, it was nice to have extras I was able to offer them free locally to a few people who had lost all their summer squash.
Great way to get money for your project. I think it will work out. A nice on the free extra plants and helping out others.

I'm so ready to go Gung ho on gardening this Spring. I'm having a hard time holding back.
I have a theory about this. Around December, I could care less about gardening. Come February, the longer days and the angle of the sun "triggers" my green thumb and I'm not even kidding. I get almost manic trying to sprout "all the things" and saving all my yogurt containers. I think it's a scientific phenomenon.

Last year, I made around $600 over the course of several plant sales and vendor events, which I do all year, just change what I offer, depending on the season. This year, I'm offering seeds along with plants. Fyi, I don't see a live scheduled for the 20th, I see one for the 19th

I was all set to do this for spring 2020 and then we all know what happened. Time to try again.
I actually started small in 2020 because of Covid. But where I live things were not so massively restricted. Mostly friends and family that year. The next year I did pretty good just tomatoes and peppers and a few other extras I had. Last year I had people coming back again. Even with someone giving them away up the street. We were out there almost everyday for a few weeks. I am probably going to limit it more this year.

I feel lucky there's an Amish family 15 minutes away from me, that sells transplants for 37.5 cents each. I give them more money because I feel that's too cheap.

I had a light bulb moment towards the end of the video… sell an assortment on one tray for a full garden variety pack for say maybe $100 ish? Some basic vegetables, herbs, fruit… whatever is in season…just a thought. Very nice episode Gary!

Very few people will pay $100 for that. Garage sale buyers are cheap, but bundles are a good idea.
Those planters pots be big help if at right price and amount. Wat about burlap sacks and plastic film to wrap root ball to propergated trees and bushes to sale or to have more trees saplings in your yard especially in process to make more butterfly n hummingbird bush hedge fencing an beautiful hardy Egyptian bush of purples columns of flowers in origin? Another thing is region and plants for some species don't grow well in different regions and weather?.
I so want to do this. Although yes, it would be great if it helped offset some of my costs - but more, it would be great to offer varieties that one just can't get here normally. There is almost no variety in my area. AND - having transplants available once the main big box stores or nurseries stop stocking. The latter is why I started seed starting. A few years back, a crazy hail storm wiped out my entire garden. It was the first/second week of May, around Mother's day. But I could barely find anything to replant. Never again.
I grew 500 tomato plants a few years ago. I grew quite a few varieties that I have had good success with. I found out people only wanted to buy “Roma”, “Beefsteak” “Pear” etc. They had never heard of the interesting varieties I had available.
It really does help with costs.
Made just over 1k last year. Will be streamlining this year, less plants for sure. Mainly because I was transporting too many flats for many days.

I've been following Gary seven years. Taught me most of what I know.. I sold plants two seasons and only made $600. I spent $700 building a warm-frame and other stuff. I worked my butt off making sure they thrived. I was proud of them.
But, really? Sure, there is money to be made, like $2 to $3/hr., maybe... Remember, $1,000 is 250 transplants, 25 flats, 35 square feet of plants.
Nah. I love you, Gary, but this is a stretch on the truth.
Well, I have made this. Plant Sale, Saturday and Sunday, and the Giant Flea Market back at my other place. All within a week. Not in one day, but it is possible. It will vary of course. I could have clarified over a period of time for the spring sale.
I did this the last two years. People appreciate it, and I can support my garden habit.

This is the first winter I did an indoor garden. I made a 6x8 green house in one of our cellars. Using 2 really good led grow lights , intake and exhaust with oscillating fan . I gotta say , Having tropical summer flowers blooming in Massachusetts winter is pretty amazing. Me and my daughter's are doing really well maintaining the space 👍with a lemon tree, sunpatients, hydrangeas, petunias, and of course there's 5 of those very popular medicinal plants in there that are getting a wee bit too big 😂. I also have a hydroponics set up that I think we'll use for the herbs. The gnats have been my only problem. I did nuke my potting soil for 90 seconds and that seemed to reduce the gnats as transplanting took place.
The indoor garden has definitely made this winter more enjoyable than previous miserable winters. I've been. Growing for years and have always wanted to do a sale. My family owns a nursery so I probably should get off my ars and start my own . Flowers and dirt are much more enjoyable than a nursing career!

Great Topic. I plan on doing this next year. This year, I am working on the infrastructure. The polytunnel greenhouse is just about ready to cover. I am, weather provided, working on making three raised beds to go inside it. My plan is to plant tomatoes, lettuce, and Red Bearded Bunching onions inside it. I will also be moving my planting table inside. It can easily hold 6 10x20 trays. I'll probably set up a second table outside temporarily. This will give me the space I need for my seed starts, and the plants I want to put up for sale. In a few weeks when I get caught up, I'll have to sit down to see how many of what plants I want to sell, purchase more trays, and however many more starting cells I need I have plenty of singles, and maybe enough four cell. I will definitely need more six cell pots, and of course seeds. I can collect some from my garden, but not all of them.
I hope you get a drone shot of your property one day. Id love to see I pic.

Hazel grow unique don't grow typical varieties. I couldn't sell them life me but guaranteed you sell unique and varieties not found anywhere else you will get customers. I did a larger post my lessons learned over last few years doing a sale.
I use a box fan on my seedlings before they go outside.

Suggest making paper pots instead of one use plastic

My biggest problem with trying to sell the plants, is I started off trying to sell 100 plants. Even at $1 a plant, I couldn't sell the full 100 plants. But I only used word of mouth. I maybe sold 20 plants, and planted about 20 plants myself. So the other 60 plants were either given away or just died. I may have to revisit this idea again. I've since moved to a more farming type community since that time and there's a need for it this year with inflation going up.

Tip for anyone growing to sell. Growing unusual varieties that you can't purchase in the store big box or nursery will make your sale successful. You can advertise unique! People don't want to go out of the way to visit a hobby gardener when, for convenience, they can purchase when at a big box store. Approach a sale with uncommon varieties to draw them in. Some examples dwarf tomatos, super hot peppers, black tomatos, oxheart tomatos, stevia herbs, just the things you won't find. It sets yourself apart from the boring and draws in customers. Create photo cards so your customers have a vision of end results along with days to maturity.
I have established customers now not doing a big sale, just growing unique & productive varieties.
Gary. you're wrong about people wanting bigger plants unless annual flowers. Bigger plants = transplant shock. Some of this advice is valuable but definitely a starting guide only. Don't sell peas, corn, root crops, or brassica's as transplants. That's setting your customers up for failure, and they won't return.

Checked with my AG dept for certifications. For what I'm planning none is needed. I'm basically overbuying on seeds and supplies and hope to break even. That means break even so my personal garden costs me nothing and everything I pick this year is free to me.

This will be my first year selling at our new house. I used to sell out when I lived in an apartment. I had people ripping down my signs because I was the cheapest in town😂. I only charge $1-$3 a plant. My tomatoes are only $1 and people loved it. Selling my tomatoes paid for my costs of supplies. Then everything else paid for my time.
That is perfect. I would definitely go to $2 and do 3 for $5. Still the cheapest in town. Have fun and enjoy your garden.

How much do you think I should price the ultra-hot pepper plants? They took forrevverr to germinate. They are in 16 oz styrofoam cup.
$4-6 would be a starting point. 16 ounces is a lot of soil, you might have even bigger plants that you could get more for. But each locality has different buyers.

I wish I could do this here in Hawaii. A lot of stuff is really expensive compared to the mainland, but plant starts are not. I can go to a bit box store or green house and get plant starts for $1.50-$2.

What do you grow in July for plant sales?
Oh I would mostly grow flowers. Marigolds, zinnia, and cosomos. Basil, Dill, Parsley. For August I have the cool crops ready for people to plant fall gardens. In some cases you would do that in July too. Kale, Broccoli, Cauliflower etc.

I have just used a bagged potting mix that was on sale. All kinds of different stuff. Just dont use starting mix, its to expensive.
