    Wow! You hit some sort of nerve with this video it seems.
    I just wanted to thank you for giving such detailed information on how to start selling plants. I've been wanting to get into selling plants as I always plant way too many but because I am a person that must know every detail in how to do something before I do it, selling has never worked out for me. This will be my goal for the year. Thanks again for all the info.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      LOL I know. So possible to do too. Ive done it. IF you start small you get the hang of it. 10 of the low containers I showed in the video hold 31 plants. Thats 310 plants of different varieties of cukes, zukes, squash, beans, and peas. The cost is about $70 for the containers. Gross at $2 X 310 is $620. I would just lay the container out with holes in bottom and plant outdoors. Frost days UGH. Move them in... other wise they grow right there. It works. Have fun.

      Depending on what growing area you live in, you can also buy seeds that grow well in your climate. For me, I buy a lot of seeds that like moist soil and are more cold hardy as I live in the PNW. Good luck on your growing (and selling!) adventure!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are low. 2$ a plant really gets people to find you to start. $3 a plant is fair. Today I would charge $3 a plant with a discount of 4 for $10. All depends on your goal. Good luck.

    Thank you for this info! I have been wanting to do this so will try next year - I had a client of my business give me 5 4' grow light setups so I'm thinking I'm ahead of the game.
    Just a note for some - check with your state Ag office to see if you need a license. In OK you can sell produce at a farmer's market with no license; however, if you want to sell the actual plants that grow that produce, you must have (as of this year) a $26 'grower's license' ... that on top of state, county & city taxes for the sales - so save your expenditure receipts too.

    I work in a grocery store and they get crates of green beans in with handles that they just throw away. They are about 18 in tall 18 in wide and 24 in long. These are ideal for transporting plants in and out of the house or somewhere else. They hold about 15 of the large solo cups . Also prior to Valentines day every floral dept gets hundreds of landscape type pots that are about 2 gallons I guess, needless to say I have more of these than I will ever use. very good video Gary!

    Humidity dome should ONLY be used in germination. Do NOT put a clear tub over actual plants outside as you eliminate airflow around the plants making the potential for disease thrive in that environment. The entire purpose of 'hardening off' plants is to expose them to wind to strengthen their stems which that humidity dome also prevents. Instead of a humidity dome limit the exposure to outside in the beginning gradually increasing daily.

    Great idea in using roasting pans and totes to move plants around! Moving all those plants out of the basement and outside takes a lot of trips when the black trays only hold about 15 Solo type cups. I do put a plant marker in each cup. That way the customer has it to mark the plant when they plant it. I bought 500 markers for $15 last year, comes out to only $.03 each.

    I am in 9b/10a and I'm guessing that will impact when I decide to hold a plant sale, since personally I put tomato plants in the ground two weeks ago. Last month was when the 'good' local nursery started ramping up all their spring/summer rotation of plants.
    There must be a 'Goldielocks' spot for each region for holding a plant sale, right?

    In the state of Florida, in the county I live in, people are not allowed to sell plants at yard sales unless they have inspection and license with the Department of Agriculture, not just a retail license is needed. But people do sell plants at yard sakes, especially when they are moving. I guess the Dept of Ag is concerned about spreading insects, disease and invasive plants. The licenses are not too expensive for small sale nurseries They could fine people without a license for selling just one plant.

    I love your videos!! I think I have watched too many of them at this point, and the information is leaking out of my brain. Are there any herbs/plants that I can plant in a big tray and just put them outside to grow? I am in zone 5 (NE Ohio) and it's early March. Last frost is usually in May. I am running out of space under my lights, and I want to grow a lot more plants. Thanks!! Love the videos, sincerely!!

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much. LOL. So the issues is the mix will freeze solid. Or it is so cold seeds dont germinate till the right temps come. So you arent really getting anything early. You can seed just about any herb and leave the trays out during the day and bring them in at night. That would be the compromise.

    Some great advice here. I think the thing about where to sell them really depends on your location though. I’m in Texas and if we waited till May to plant tomatoes it would be WAY too late and they’d just end up dying in the extreme summer heat before you ever got a harvest. I think because everyone watching is going to be located somewhere different it is more helpful to to say the things like “start these things X amount of weeks before you want to be selling them”

    I did not know that there were vegetables that are not plants...... on the other hand it would be nice if besides stating how much you made you could also say how much you did spend in order to have your place ready to plant... I'm pretty sure if i had to buy all those thing from shelving to cups to seeds, fertilizer, etc. I would spent more than 1.000

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  ปีที่แล้ว

      You say vegetable plants. As we arent selling vegetables or random plants. You spend about .20 cents a plant at most. And you can reuse many materials, lights are good for 10+ years

    I have 128 tomato seedlings, and will be growing herbs, cat nip, and marigolds alongside my photography prints as a new business. The tomatoes will be 5mo old. I spent around 800 bucks though in total for photography and my garden since last year, so I really wont make profit until next time. Or until I have enough produce to sell later this summer.

Do you have any sense of what % if the cost of good goes to potting soil or if there is a way to keep the potting soil cost down? I feel like that is where the bulk of my growing expense goes. I also feel like people will need to pot up themselves so do I really need to add compost and all of that?

    Gary, does the state you live in not require a license to sell plants? If not, you are lucky. In most states it is unlawful via the U.S. department of agriculture. I keep seeing everyone posting to sell plants on their sights. Everyone should be careful. Speaking from experience. This goes for seeds as well. In my state, Oklahoma, a state permit is needed for every single location you sell. People may think this is crazy, but it cuts down on spreadable disease and pest.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer is I dont know. Ongoing sales and distribution might be different than a plant yard sale. But I just dont know. The seeds are sold in States. So you are growing what is already present.

      @@THERUSTEDGARDEN I hope everyone reading will check with their local Dept of Agriculture or EPA. I’m pretty certain this law also covers yard sales. It is the sale of plants period in my state, for a good reason, spread of disease and pest from one area to another. When you get into shipping seeds that you have saved, this is interstate transport of seeds. I was a little surprised when I actually learned all the rules for selling plants and seeds. I’m seeing almost every channel recommend to people to have sales etc. please tell them to check their state laws, you don’t want a government agency on your case.

      @@noniemarley7012 Exactly - (I posted same above) I found out when an aquaponics supplies store asked if I had a license to sell plants (I was wanting to grow out house plants and they carried the trays and pots). So I called the state and paid for my license (this happened right after the state passed the "pot law" - they thought that 'pot' license was what I wanted ... really was a funny conversation) - but I paid my $26 and got the license to sell garden veggies & house plants.

    I have an indoor grow set up. What would you suggest planting now so I can make money over the winter? Or should I just be patient and prepare to sell starting next Spring? Would people buy potted herbs during the colder months perhaps as house plants? I currently have a 48" x 72" full of healthy plants I can simply propagate but am thinking people will not want them in the off season...

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the issue would be how would you sell them in the winter. Usually spring is best cause people are ready to buy and plant and you have a lot of demand. I would make a lot of the perennial herbs as they can even go out early and just grow and get ready for a big sale in spring.

    I plan to try selling some of my left over plants and if I get enough interest I will up the game next year I'm thinking I need sell them for $2 minimum or it will cost me more then I will make when you ad it up for pots,soil,seeds,fertilizer,lights,power I would lose money at a dollar.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      $2 is great. Youll find plenty can be made at that price. Good idea to test it out too.
      Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for your seeds, seed starting supplies, package seed deals, oils and my new LOGO'd journals and harvest bags. THANKS! I have coffee mugs too but shipping is SO MUCH for them. Working on that.

    I noticed you said to start cucumbers, squash, etc directly outside and bring them in at night. I already started my cucs under grow lights, just getting first true leaves. Can I transition them now to outdoors instead of under lights?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can put them out. Its a timing thing. You just want them growing 4-5 weeks, after germination for the sale.

    Thanks for this! I’ve been looking for ways to sell plants. Your video is thorough and super helpful. Just a couple questions, how many plants do you recommend starting for your first plant sale? Also how do you poke holes in the cups? I’ve tried using scissors but the bottoms keeps cracking like a spiderweb.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cups should always have holes. Really depends on how many people you think will come buy. But if it is busy at all you can go through 200 plants like nothing. Heat a metal nail and poke holes. It stinks but works on plastic.

    Thanks yor the great info as always! I started gardening on 2017, but what I have been doing with 100's of plants is to place it in front of my house with a note saying: "take it, is free" . This season I'm not much into it. I didn't germinate too much. Just a few more than I need.

    Gary, I did forget to ask one more question about this video and the other one about selling herbs. After a few weeks of growth, do you fertilize any of these? Thanks for all the time you put into these videos.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally after 2 weeks of growth very very very diluted water soluble fertilizer
