    At my Spring plant yard sale, I sell herbs and flowers suitable for making teas and heirloom tomatoes. And I have the sale on the second Saturday in May. I live in a small mountain town. The local hardware store sells all the vegetable starts and a good supply of herbs. But they are completely out of stock , except for a few scraggly tomatoes, by the first of May. So I sell slightly larger plants for those people who couldn't get their veges in April, or want a few more. This way I'm not competing with the business in town.

    Regarding pricing your offerings: something I heard on this same topic (different industry, but same philosophy) is to remember that you ARE NOT your target market! The market YOU are in is the one where you are doing the work yourself; your BUYERS' market is the convenience of someone else starting the work FOR them

    Loved the video! This type of thought process is so helpful. This info is what no one usually talks through. I love plants and garden videos but the thought process of the business side is so helpful and not really clear on other videos.
    What I am getting while you talk about this is inspiration. Thank you so much for figuring out a teachable way to talk through your business process without making it overwhelming. 💚

    Great advice! It's always nice to grow for cheap or give away to friends and family but when you grow for profit keeping your set price is the hardest advice we give but have trouble following. I struggle alot of selling to friends that think because we know each other I should give it to them. You are correct on saying it's not fair to other farmers it definitely de-values everyones product.

    Big box store prices arent comparable to local nursery or small plant sale prices. They are able to purchase supplies at a MUCH larger scale cutting their costs dramatically in comparison. They also normally dont offer as many organic or heirloom varieties at the commercial level. They are able to use machinery and less hands on time and time is also money. So, I never expect to get Walmart, Home Depot ir Lowe's prices at my local nurseries and would be silly for anyone to expect that. Half the plants at my local Walmart is usually dead or dying, so of course I wouldn't pay more than the $1.97 they price it at. Ans they usually sell the most basic options.

    Very good information! I used to go the last hour of craft fairs/sales because vendors don’t want to take lots of items home. I was thinking of hosting a plant table by the side of the road in my town for house plants/extra seedlings. I ended up giving them away instead and already was sent an email asking for more free plants. Please get a card reader! I rarely carry cash in the quantity needed for sales. Personally if I set up a table this year it will have to be cash only and in a drop box honor system with a sign donations welcome, otherwise I have to get a permit from my town. HOW’S THE BABY? Kicking in the bloopers? 💕

      Baby Is doing great and just cooking away! I know a local flower farmer that has great success with drop box/honor system flower bouquets. It’s worth a shot!

    Super helpful! I love growing all the things and usually start so much that I give them away but I have been thinking about selling out of my yard.
    My biggest struggle is, I don't know what to charge...how do I go about pricing plants?

    • @BerkeleyFarms
      @BerkeleyFarms  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d take a look at what your local nurseries are pricing. Consider that your product may be worth a little more than that.

  • @carolinegathercole8473
    @carolinegathercole8473 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Think the most expensive part of the set up is the pots.
    They seem such a waste and is a continuous expense, also, when people plant their plants they throw the pots away.
    Trying to think of an alternative such as cardboard toilet roll inserts or pots made from newspaper, not sure if that would put people off buying from me.

  • @americansupertramp

    Soooo, you all talk about price fixing? How about that. Shady way to do business. Sherman Antitrust Act

    • @stellaluuk2713
      @stellaluuk2713 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If someone undercuts everyone else then the result is people think they are worth less and sales at a reasonable price become difficult. The goal is to make a bit of money and there are some costs, seeds, soil, water, pots, your grow light setup.
