A friend of mine "Shark Scrapper" in Florida goes out every week collecting scrap metal on trash day. He comes across many items that could be used for trellis in the garden, plenty of wire shelving, pet cages, mops/brooms (use the handles), chicken wire, metal/wooden fencing, the list is endless what people throw out. Anyone starting out or looking to expand for almost free could go out once a month and find more than enough supplies to make a good start for the cost of time and petrol. Also remember all the "stuff" you rescue for re-use or re-purposing was destined for the landfill. Do yourselves and the world a favour and satisfy most of your gardening needs for almost free. Take care all and happy gardening, Poo

I’m already a gardener, but I like listening & watching your videos bc you give honest & useful information, I always pick up a good tip or I’m reminded of things I know but have forgotten to do or use. For beginners, they hit the Jackpot with your channel! You do a great job or ensuring that the love, skill, & joys of gardening & growing your own food & flowers is a vital part of one’s life! You are fortunate to have grown up with a family of gardeners! And we are fortunate that you do an awesome job of sharing it!! Thank you!!
I have watched this video over ten times in the last year because it is loaded with information! I didn't want to miss a thing! Thank you for sharing all your knowledge and ideas. 🙏
I have been a gardener for 25+ years and still learn much from this video. I do appreciate all the info and work done here. It can elevate one's trellising to new 'heights' :)
I just found this video and have watched almost twice. This is a keeper. Loaded with info. My mind is spinning with ideas and it will be great to go vertical due to my back issue!!!!❤
My indeterminate tomatoes outgrew their cages so I trellised them using an old 6 ft board I found in our shed and some twine I had for crafts. I strung the twine from the corner of my garden bed to the vertical board, then over to the nearby shed. It's currently holding up 2 plants and works great! I thought about Gary saying "just use what you have" and that's what I did! 😁

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Hey Gary, don't forget to mention rolls of polypropylene baler twine. They come in long, long rolls and can be used for stringing up plants. It is tough stuff to hold hay/straw bales together. Ranchers just cut the twine off and often just drape it off a fence post. Visit one of these gents and they will likely give somebody more than they will ever need. Tie the ends together to make a long length of twine. (There are knots that will never pull apart). We get broken bales at work and I always save the twine. A new roll will last decades. Thanks, my friend. Bob
Kristin Wishon, Great idea. I just want to mention I used craft twine while growing cucumbers and one day my plants collapsed and few broke. The craft twine broke because of the rain and sun. It wasn't sturdy enough to support my plants. You might want to check that twine? Thanks. Wishing you happy plants :-)
I grew all my winter squash up cattle panels last year & gained 'real estate' for other crops. With my small garden I am learning to grow up as much up as possible. I grew onions & marigolds around all my tomatoes. I didn't have ANY tomato worms. I also planted beans in with my potatoes & had NO potato bugs! I learned the inner planting from a British friend. The bugs don't like the smells of the other vegetable. It works!

I used metal mesh to grow my squash. I reached my hand in and realized I could not get the squash through the mesh. Genius move on my part. I forgot about it until he mentioned putting his hand through to being out the veggie. Haha. My learning curve!

I bought 6 of those ladder mesh at Home Depot. Yet to put them up but man, they are a cheap option and actually more sturdy and substantial than I expected.
The are inexpensive and you can cut them too. I cut some to make a hope house for the fall. You saw the small pieces in the sweet potatoes bed. Thank you! Used green garden fencing with 2" x 4" holes. Just weaving tomato plants through holes as they grow. The look nice, get lots of air & sun. And I dont have to worry about breaking vines as I pick the cherry tomatoes. I will never go back to tomato cages!! Thank you!
Weaves work well Get your fall garden supplies! Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden shop for seeds, seed starting supplies, neem oil, TRG merchandise and more at www.therustedgarden.com
I have been using these better quality tom cone cages, but in my orchard this year, I put at least 3 ridgid 1/2 poles and zip tie them onto the cages. The wind blew one of my pots over last night and it was heavy to try to upright again. They are all in #10 (10 gallon?) pots in case I have to move them into my garage if it wants to frost early. I can get 34" "hog panels" that are damaged where I work and configure them into a circle if I need to. Thanks for presenting all these support possibilities. I keep my eyes open for good stuff almost everywhere I go. I'm a scrounger from way back. Cheers, Gary. Bob
Thanks for all the ideas! I have an old hose holder with a faucet that was just too difficult for me to repair. I was about to throw it away until you gave me the idea to use it as a low support. I'm going to use it to stake a long branch of a zucchini. One less thing going to the landfill!

For my hops here in upstate NY I took 2 20' trees that I cut, buried them 4' deep slightly angled out from each other with an eye hook at the top of each, strung a rope through those and zig zagged twine between the rope and the plants for each row. Worked out great and I was able to raise and lower the whole set of bines when it was time to harvest.
That probably looked great. For my indeterminate tomatoes, I use 2 cages per 3 plants. I put one cage in the ground the right way, then flip the other on top of it (upside-down) and zip-tie them together. Then I plant three tomatoes in a triangle around them and attach them with plastic snap rings or twine or twist ties-- whatever I have-- as they grow up the cages. They all balance each other out in weight so it keeps the cages straight up and sturdy, makes a nice tall tower of tomatoes.
Wow Gary. I am so glad I found your channel. These options are phenomenal. The soil in my backyard is a hard clay type but I am 100% that one of these options you have shown will be sufficient for me.

The A-Frame/ladder trellises are so eye catching! The taller versions could perhaps have something planted underneath that prefers shade or dappled light? Looks like you have something planted under your ladder. Great way to maximize space.

Awesome!! you have such great uses for all kinds of repurposed materials. If only I could borrow you to come help me get started, so overwhelming when you are a beginner. thank you!!
Really good ideas, and what beautiful and productive gardens!! One thing I'd like to mention is that the concrete reinforcing wire is very heavy and stiff. Several years ago, I had a roll of it delivered thinking to make tomato cages with it. However, I am a small woman, and I couldn't unroll it more than about 6 inches and definitely couldn't move the whole roll anywhere. So just a heads up that if you are not big/strong, you will need help with that.🙂

I just bought over a dozen 10 ft pieces of electrical conduit for 75 cents each at The Community Forklift, a reuse warehouse in the DC metro area. Attach netting to them, which I can make myself, and I can make both walls and tunnels on which to grow anything from beans to melons. They sell at the box stores for nearly $8 a piece. Check the reuse warehouses near you. They also have wood panels for free which I've used to make several three tier shelves for my container garden. Super easy to make using three 10x11 sheets of cardstock as the template for the 'ladder' on which to lay the shelves. I added two poles along the back on which to attach hardware cloth as a trellis.

great video! heaps of information and very inspiring. I am in the process of expanding my no dig garden on a 1/2 acre on my property in New Zealand. Everything is ridiculously expensive to buy here so these ideas are great ideas!
Great video and I really like the messages about looking for items to repurpuse, which saves money and helps save things from going into the landfill. I'm always driving around with an eye out for free stuff by the curb and have used it for the garden. I've had great luck and you wouldn't be able to tell it was used/almost trash.

Don't forget to shop your local Facebook marketplace. Dog kennels and runs can be used to enclose a small garden & trellis at the same time. Some dog play pens can be taken apart and the panels can be used individually. Look for stores closing for wire grid used to display merchandise with hooks. Some panels are 2'x6'--perfect for a trellis.

Newbe gardener and a small yard in the city I’ve had my hubby build me a green house because the skunks and squirrels are notorious diggers I found last year trying with an open garden and they destroyed my garden burying peanuts my neighbour feeds these animals but the worst of them all was her 9!!! The metal forms are for spacing concrete blocks

Amen. I ENJOY using JUNK I find laying around (for FREE) ☺️
Yep it might not be pretty but its effective

I repurposed a bent up dog crate. Took 2 sides and made an A frame for my mini cukes. Leaned one piece up against a t post for another cucumber plant.
It works!
Thats a great way to do it

Sounds great. Green beans or broad beans??
I used metal mesh to grow my squash. I reached my hand in and realized I could not get the squash through the mesh. Genius move on my part. I forgot about it until he mentioned putting his hand through to being out the veggie. Haha. My learning curve!
I make all my own trellises from scraps of wood, branches and bamboo but this video gave me so many ideas. Much love from Thailand.

Thank you! Used green garden fencing with 2" x 4" holes. Just weaving tomato plants through holes as they grow. The look nice, get lots of air & sun. And I dont have to worry about breaking vines as I pick the cherry tomatoes. I will never go back to tomato cages!! Thank you!
Weaves work well

Bob
I was a head housekeeper for years... I saved all the broom and mop handles when the brooms and mops were trashed. They work great :)

Thanks for all the ideas! I have an old hose holder with a faucet that was just too difficult for me to repair. I was about to throw it away until you gave me the idea to use it as a low support. I'm going to use it to stake a long branch of a zucchini. One less thing going to the landfill!
Glad to share. That will look very cool as a lower support. Yep cool on the landfill too.

Very cool visual! I love the idea of spacing the tomato plants OUTSIDE the tomato cages!
Wow Gary. I am so glad I found your channel. These options are phenomenal. The soil in my backyard is a hard clay type but I am 100% that one of these options you have shown will be sufficient for me.
Thank you! I have half a roll of fencing sitting around and several stakes of rebar. That circular thing is just perfect.
That works. And I like the circular design over many others.

The A-Frame/ladder trellises are so eye catching! The taller versions could perhaps have something planted underneath that prefers shade or dappled light? Looks like you have something planted under your ladder. Great way to maximize space.
Great point. And I will doing that in places.

Awesome!! you have such great uses for all kinds of repurposed materials. If only I could borrow you to come help me get started, so overwhelming when you are a beginner. thank you!!
Start small. Slowly you lean and add to it. Let me know if you have any questions.
So just a heads up that if you are not big/strong, you will need help with that.🙂
Thanks and good point.

What you are calling 'A-frames' I believe are actually laundry racks ;) The panels with the smaller rectangles are 'hog' panels, as opposed to the cattle panels with the larger squares.

Great tips and price.

I really love that you used that PVC pipe at the top of your T-posts. I use mostly branches but this would also work for me. Getting it secure at the top can sometimes be the most challenging part of making my many trellises.

Great idea

Lots of different trellis options, love the content. Also the seeds from your shop are growing phenomenal, may have to order more for an indoor garden over the winter
Newbe gardener and a small yard in the city I’ve had my hubby build me a green house because the skunks and squirrels are notorious diggers I found last year trying with an open garden and they destroyed my garden burying peanuts my neighbour feeds these animals but the worst of them all was her 9!!! Yes 9 cats that think my garden is their personal potting it’s infuriating and was a waste of all my hard work, I got freaked out about tape worm infection contaminating my vegetables from their fecies , uckkk huh, but I’m out smarting them this year as I’m learning how to grow a vegetable garden in the city and wow love your ideas and Will definitely incorporate many of these ideas thank you so much for you video and all your hard work.
🇨🇦 City girl going country❤️
Crazy and so annoying. Cats are wonderful but 9 make me wonder. People put forks upside down in beds to deter animals too btw. Prongs up.

Love the creatvity and attitude twards trying anything and everything that works! Awesome trelising! I built a new one its just pressure treated 2x4 12 inch into the ground in a line then more 2x4 connecting the verticals on top,and i have those indeterminate tomatoe nylon string reels screwed into the top of those
The reels are a great idea

I love the versatility and affordability of the ladder mesh, but in my neck of the woods (New England), there have been none to be found - sold out everywhere!
