Honestly, it's this guy's fault. He got social engineered. Seems like he didn't have 2 factor authentication. TH-cam already has a system in place, this guy just kinda did the big dumb thing.
@@SECONDQUESTthis is false. TH-cam's 2FA is only for writing the session token. So stealing the session token supercedes this authentication. Yes, this is a problem with learning about the social engineering, BUT TH-cam does need to improve security with the session tokens.
Unfortunately the sad thing is there's no real permanent solution to stop these hackers. Hackers will always find and create new methods to get around their security measures as they are persistent. Sure youtube can put up more newer measures but that only covers the current tools that hackers use They will never know any new methods hackers will come up with in the future. By the time they find out about it it will always be too late. The damage would already have been done by that point. It's just an endless uphill battle with hackers. The best they could do is just to adapt as it happens.
I didn't even know you were hacked, but this video showed up just now and I'm happy you're in control again, instead of having those guys take over. I've been with your videos for years, literally since *I* was a teen, now I'm an adult myself. It's been crazy to see your growth, hoping things only go up from here!
Same here although I will say this, anyone can fall for something like this and that includes very smart people as we are flawed and will always miss something so the best way to not miss something as often is to know how people will trick you into doing what they want you to do

Yeah, I've been getting a few of these fake sponsorship reach outs myself - they always send you an archive file with a password for "security" that houses a few "assets" and then a "contract agreement". In the cases I've seen, the file extension is usually a windows screen saver extension. Opening this or even just having it on your PC will usually spell very bad news. Good rule of thumb is that legit sponsorships will never make you download a sketchy file like this, and contract agreements will usually be on a website or a google document and not something you need to download. It's very concerning how legit some of these people can appear at first. Sorry this happened to you and I hope you are able to recover from this!

I remember this happening to Nathaniel Bandy a while back. They got in using an old email address that was completely disused. He got the channel back of course, but he also lost a large amount of subs and terrified that the channel could be screwed. When I saw the channel got hacked, I felt the same thing I felt when Bandy was hacked. Glad you got the channel back and everything seems to mostly be intact.
I remember that. What I did when I saw the live stream was open the channel, because the @ handle stays the same, and it showed Bandy's name. So I put two and two together and stayed subscribed, hoping he would get his channel back.
@@Outside998I figured it out because I saw it happen right as it occurred, so they didn’t even change the channel name as of that moment. Plus I would’ve never subbed to a channel like that anyways, so I knew it was some sort of hack even if I didn’t catch the channel name being unchanged.
So sorry you had to go through this, Andy. Hope the recovery is at the very least steady. I may not be here all the time to watch all your stuff, but when I do come across you even after a while, it doesn't get old. Thank you for doing what you do & doing the best that you can, and I wish you & your loved ones nothing but the best.

Yeah, I was watching that too. On the one hand I was heartbroken that a genuinely great creator had gotten taken over like that. Man, i never saw the livestream but i noticed something was up when i went into a playlist and noticed a video was gone. Im glad you got your channel back these glitch videos were a cornerstone to why im even interested in stuff like programming.
One of the first and most important things I learned during my Cyber Security classes: Everyone can fall victim to social engineering. No matter how much you know about that topic or how good you are at detecting it, there is at least one sort of social engineering out there that can and most likely will get you at least once in your life.
Had it happen to me once. I’ve always been the one to sniff out cyber scams, and still never fallen victim to one. But, in my personal life, I fell victim to a car repair scam that left me $600 poorer, and my car with more damage than before(at least it still drives fine). It. Can. Happen. To. Anyone. And the more complacent you are in thinking you’re not vulnerable, the more you up your chances of being preyed upon. Be safe out there. Peace.

Great to see you back. One thing to be wary of, from my understanding, the Titan Key wouldn't have protected your channel from a session hijack attack like this, but obviously more security is always more better, but as ever, stay safe! Can't wait to watch your next video!
@@AStartShow Yeah, Linus Tech Tips ended up finding out what happened, or at least had a solid theory. Basically the hijack used your active cookies and sessions to bypass ALL forms of 2FA and then at some point, either through your computer or more likely copying the credentials and info because I'm willing to bet you probably have 'auto-fill' and all your passwords saved to the browser, changed the profile info and thus locking you out then carrying out the rest of the attack. I believe in his situation he was stuck with constantly resetting the password to no avail and it wasn't until he reset his cookies/cache that he could go through with it and get his stuff back, you'd have to check it out for the specifics but it IS possible that the attacks have been made a bit more advanced. if you haven't cleared your cookies and cache yet, might not be a bad idea to do so.
@@Ballade90 I feel like more protection on the end of session cookies Needs to happen because this is the way a lot of people are getting hacked, people that shouldn't have gotten hacked. It's just a HUGE vulnerability.
@@AStartShow The amount of people that have their e-mail and password saved so they can auto-login is insane. It is so insecure. You really should manually type in your e-mail address and password each time you login. Much safer. Glad to see you're back!

Been here for a long time, used to have your content playing on shuffle while I worked, but the algorithm kinda hid you away from me for a while. Thank goodness you managed to get your account back, and recover the old videos. Commenting on videos, even just a couple of sentences, hugely boosts the frequency of videos showing up in the suggested feed, and rewatching old content pushes even the old videos more often. With long form content it can be a real slog, but major props to you for managing to maintain it for so many year's! Heres to many more to come! 🍻

I remember when you first started your low poly series, and it was something so exciting to me! Seeing the chronological order of the models, how they evolved over time in sync with technological developments or things to do with performance and such. It helped to spark a lot of my interest in game development and the behind-the-scenes side of things. And then... you just, disappeared from my algorithm. Long before getting hacked, but zi hope that TH-cam's terrible algorithm gets you back into my feed, you amazing man!

Son of a Glitch is my favorite channel and to hear what happened is devastating, but I’m glad that you have the keys back to the castle. I remember when you just disappeared for your break and was worried something happened to you like you may have died and I was worried not just because that would mean that there would be no more content but just also due to following you for so long it always felt like seeing a friend so for something to happen to that friend and not hear from them is worrisome and I remember the day you uploaded I was glad to see anything knowing you were alright.

I'm so glad you managed to get your channel back. I remember watching your stuff when I was younger, and I even have a pretty specific memory related to your videos. When I was 9 or 10 I was watching a Son of a Glitch episode on the living room computer, only for my mom to walk in right as the intro started. I was so scared that she'd think it was a swear word and that I'd be in huge trouble, but she just laughed and said it was a cute pun. Luckily I'm 19 now and don't need to worry about getting in trouble over something like that.

You’re quite right about subscribing and bells not working right, I’ve not seen your content show up in my subscriptions or recommended have not shown up in a year. Glad you got the channel back.
The subscription tab works just fine. Some people will have it show up there faster than others just because of how things are sent around to servers but within a half hour generally everyone sees it. Just stop using the home page. It is completely worthless. You have no right to complain if you're telling TH-cam that they can tell you what to watch instead of just demanding they show you what you asked to see.
You have to make it so it says all videos as there are 3 different bell icons, also there is a bell or something on the top right on phone and PC that will show all the videos that have posted within the timeframe, so it is likely that your videos are there, if it says 9+ then maybe you should check it to see what has been posted
No idea what the other two commenters are on about, but you're right -- when I subscribe to someone, I want all their videos to appear in the subscriptions tab. That's the whole point of subscribing!!

Hey, I feel for you. I once had a video with over 1 MILLION views, and I deleted it because of copyright, but now I can't get anyone to watch my vids. After a while, I looked into it, and found that it will recommend videos to subscribers, and if they don't watch it, then they assume that the video is bad. After a while, I ended up quitting, but you're still here making videos, which is really impressive. I even remember watching you videos early on! So honestly, just thank you for this, and hopefully you get to 1Mil subs!

And that's a tech channel that fell for it. If they didn't know what was going on it's no wonder this happens to other channels.
One of the first and most important things I learned during my Cyber Security classes: Everyone can fall victim to social engineering. No matter how much you know about that topic or how good you are at detecting it, there is at least one sort of social engineering out there that can and most likely will get you at least once in your life.
Case in point, even Jim Browning fell victim to a scam that was targeted at him specifically, conning him into deleting his own TH-cam channel.
Had it happen to me once. I’ve always been the one to sniff out cyber scams, and still never fallen victim to one. But, in my personal life, I fell victim to a car repair scam that left me $600 poorer, and my car with more damage than before(at least it still drives fine).
It. Can. Happen. To. Anyone. And the more complacent you are in thinking you’re not vulnerable, the more you up your chances of being preyed upon.

Great to see you back. One thing to be wary of, from my understanding, the Titan Key wouldn't have protected your channel from a session hijack attack like this, but obviously more security is always more better, but as ever, stay safe! Can't wait to watch your next video!

@@AStartShow Yeah, Linus Tech Tips ended up finding out what happened, or at least had a solid theory. Basically the hijack used your active cookies and sessions to bypass ALL forms of 2FA and then at some point, either through your computer or more likely copying the credentials and info because I'm willing to bet you probably have 'auto-fill' and all your passwords saved to the browser, changed the profile info and thus locking you out then carrying out the rest of the attack. I believe in his situation he was stuck with constantly resetting the password to no avail and it wasn't until he reset his cookies/cache that he could go through with it and get his stuff back, you'd have to check it out for the specifics but it IS possible that the attacks have been made a bit more advanced. if you haven't cleared your cookies and cache yet, might not be a bad idea to do so.
@@Ballade90 I feel like more protection on the end of session cookies Needs to happen because this is the way a lot of people are getting hacked, people that shouldn't have gotten hacked. It's just a HUGE vulnerability.
@@AStartShow The amount of people that have their e-mail and password saved so they can auto-login is insane. It is so insecure. You really should manually type in your e-mail address and password each time you login. Much safer. Glad to see you're back!

Been here for a long time, used to have your content playing on shuffle while I worked, but the algorithm kinda hid you away from me for a while.
Thank goodness you managed to get your account back, and recover the old videos.
Commenting on videos, even just a couple of sentences, hugely boosts the frequency of videos showing up in the suggested feed, and rewatching old content pushes even the old videos more often.
With long form content it can be a real slog, but major props to you for managing to maintain it for so many year's!

I remember when you first started your low poly series, and it was something so exciting to me! Seeing the chronological order of the models, how they evolved over time in sync with technological developments or things to do with performance and such. It helped to spark a lot of my interest in game development and the behind-the-scenes side of things.
And then... you just, disappeared from my algorithm. Long before getting hacked, but zi hope that TH-cam's terrible algorithm gets you back into my feed, you amazing man!

Son of a Glitch is my favorite channel and to hear what happened is devastating, but I’m glad that you have the keys back to the castle. I remember when you just disappeared for your break and was worried something happened to you like you may have died and I was worried not just because that would mean that there would be no more content but just also due to following you for so long it always felt like seeing a friend so for something to happen to that friend and not hear from them is worrisome and I remember the day you uploaded I was glad to see anything knowing you were alright.

I'm so glad you managed to get your channel back. I remember watching your stuff when I was younger, and I even have a pretty specific memory related to your videos. When I was 9 or 10 I was watching a Son of a Glitch episode on the living room computer, only for my mom to walk in right as the intro started. I was so scared that she'd think it was a swear word and that I'd be in huge trouble, but she just laughed and said it was a cute pun. Luckily I'm 19 now and don't need to worry about getting in trouble over something like that.

You’re quite right about subscribing and bells not working right, I’ve not seen your content show up in my subscriptions or recommended have not shown up in a year. Glad you got the channel back.
The subscription tab works just fine.
Some people will have it show up there faster than others just because of how things are sent around to servers but within a half hour generally everyone sees it.
Just stop using the home page. It is completely worthless. You have no right to complain if you're telling TH-cam that they can tell you what to watch instead of just demanding they show you what you asked to see.
You have to make it so it says all videos as there are 3 different bell icons, also there is a bell or something on the top right on phone and PC that will show all the videos that have posted within the timeframe, so it is likely that your videos are there, if it says 9+ then maybe you should check it to see what has been posted
No idea what the other two commenters are on about, but you're right -- when I subscribe to someone, I want all their videos to appear in the subscriptions tab. That's the whole point of subscribing!!

Honestly I'm surprised YT hasn't put in a filter for these types of streams cuz it's very easy to search up affected channels with how prevalent it's been. Same goes for any and all scams that upload the same videos.

Hey, I feel for you. I once had a video with over 1 MILLION views, and I deleted it because of copyright, but now I can't get anyone to watch my vids. After a while, I looked into it, and found that it will recommend videos to subscribers, and if they don't watch it, then they assume that the video is bad. After a while, I ended up quitting, but you're still here making videos, which is really impressive. I even remember watching you videos early on! So honestly, just thank you for this, and hopefully you get to 1Mil subs!
