  • Dwarf Fortress is an iconic game. It is a management, simulation, story generator, rpg, and then some. It is utterly unique and is now on Steam. In this review, I will give the game a grade based on the categories of Fun, Controls, Systems and UI, Story, Visuals, Audio, and Style. I also will make a determination on if you should buy the game, based on the type of game it is, the difficulty, value, and replayability.
    Let me know how you would grade Dwarf Fortress in the comments! Do you agree or disagree with my grade?

    TBH I still prefer the pre-Steam SoundSense additions to the soundscape, as they add so many more audible alerts (& are mostly verbally amusing, too, while not being so repetetive they become a pall) :)

      @@DrIncompetent I'd be careful using StoneSense (note, not *Sound*Sense!), especially when it comes to minimising and maximising the window. It's rather crash prone, and has been that way for as long as I can remember.

    Excellent review! In spite of obviously being a dedicated fan of the game, I think you managed to remain objective! As for the stories in Dwarf Fortress, there are some issues with the Steam version compared to the pre-Steam one. An important part of the classic Dwarf Fortress was the ability to export world data, and use third-party utilities to examine them. While that could give you info that you probably shouldn't be aware of, it also massively increased the immersion by making you more familiar with the world you were playing in. What's the use of creating hundreds of years of events when you to a great extent never will be aware of them as a player? Heck, you're not even informed what deities your clan worship, which feels like one of several glaring omissions in the game. The Steam version eventually received an export function, but it only exports some of the data compared to pre-Steam. Hopefully, this will be fleshed out further later on. Ultimately, I hope to see some way for the dwarves to research history, geography, and other world-related topics in the fortress' library, which would feel much better than using a third-party utility.
    Also, I would recommend anyone playing Dwarf Fortress to use the third-party utility DFHack. Yes, it allows you to cheat, but hopefully most are able to refrain from doing so. However, it also fixes a bunch of bugs and glitches, and expands the UI - including adding features that should have been there right from the start. It's also required in order to use various mods and third-party utilities. For instance, I really wouldn't want to be without Dwarf Therapist - sure, the Steam version has made it slightly less necessary, but I still feel that it makes it much easier to get a grasp of how your dwarves are doing.
    I would give the game a high rating as well; I've played it off and on for years for a reason. It does miss some important features, however, and the recently released "beta" of Adventure mode was more like an alpha, with lots and lots of features missing. For instance, you can barely survive as a carnivore at this time, as the Butcher function hasn't been added yet. However, when the full Adventure mode is released, I expect to spend many frustrating, infuriating, exciting, and hilarious hours with it.

      I am with you! I tried Adventure mode on stream and... I didn't encounter a single living unit... I just wandered around all over the map finding nothing but trees and rocks and such... Haha, needs more time in the oven!

    I was a fan of the ascii versions, and back about 15 years ago I coughed up $40 to support the project (the game had no price tag). Because it was just such an amazing labor of passion on their part, and the project had depth you wouldn't see out of a commercial game, and absolutely no compromises were being made, and the community was fun and dedicated. This was before Rimworld et al. and, believe me, DF has depth these skimpy little Johnny-Come-Latelys can't shake a stick at. Just the DF bug reports occasionally had me busting a gut laughing.
    It's the difference between an Old Master oil painting where every lick of paint adds liveliness and drama and that richness is in every part of the scene, and the composition and illumination alone seem beyond the ability of anybody today without using every tool in the Photoshop kit - compared to some asshat painting a whole canvas one color and having the gall to stick it in a gallery.
    You know how kickstarter game projects always promise the moon and beyond, and then when the rubber meets the road it turns out those jive turkeys can't code their way out of a wet paper bag, and they deliver a completely disappointing version (if they release at all)? DF is actually doing it. Slowly, but surely, they are actually making that incredible game we want. That game we'd agree was actually worth the $60 AAA title price tag. That game that's so good it raises everyone's expectations and makes them realize most games coming out are shit.
    Protecc this team at all costs.

      This is so well said! Yes--it's truly a case of amazing and dedicated devs finally getting the resources they need to realize their vision. Maybe DF 1.0 someday??? Maybe??? haha

    The old UI as was was better. Once the keyboard controls are learned fastest is the navigation through the menus conversely to a mouse-only controls, for a game like Dwarf Fortress. Thankfully the new UI has shortcuts.

    • @DrIncompetent
      @DrIncompetent  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Haha, you know what--I kind of agree. Maybe it's just because I memorized all the old keyboard shortcuts so the new UI feels a little off, but I do like that they tried to make some more mouse-and-keyboard friendly stuff.
