@@bang5284 they're still 7th gen consoles and have to be mentioned, specially cause despite how different they are they had HELLA compatibility with their bigger counterparts, PSP and DS had a big amount of features to interact with PS3 and Wii, for example use you PSP as a PS3 controller, use it for remote play before cloud gaming was a thing, or on the Nintendo side transferring Pokémon from the Wii to the DS, even Gamecube and GBA compatibility was a big thing in 6th gen
Hands down the best generation. All 3 companies had something unique to offer. I find myself going back to my PS3/Wii catalog before touching the 360, but there's still so many amazing games from that gen.
Here’s a nice story:I’m too young to experience gen 7 but somehow, I did. I owned and played a ps3, I played a Wii at my friends house, and I played the 360 when I was VERY young
I actually grew up with all 3 of these consoles and i still have them all to this day. I by far used the ps3 and wii more than the 360 as a kid, but wii sports and Littlebigplanet were great games. Nothing will ever be as nostalgic to me as coming back to LittleBigPlanet 2 again was a few weeks ago.
After 7 all the online garbage went too far (games being unplayable without internet and games being broken until you downloaded a huge ass update), I know my Wii will be working for decades while my Switch will at best be handicapped in the future!
For real though. I was so excited when they announced Super Mario 3D All Stars but guess what? Without first installing a patch you won't je able to play it AT ALL! The moment I saw that shit I threw the game on ebay. Sold it for more than I bought it though so no financial damage to me but damn.
I grew up playing Portal 2 and Minecraft on the PS3 with my older brother and friends and I remember it being such a blast. (PORTAL 2 IS PEAK GAMING AND I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL STANDING)
This was the first generation that I feel like I really followed the life of consoles, sure, I've had contact with other consoles before, but I was able to enjoy both Wii and PS3 practically from start to finish. It was a good time.
I've been thinking about this a lot. Best generation ever. This video deserves a lot of views for being so elegantly concise yet hitting so close to home (though each of these machines could easily be talked about for HOURS) All those identical late 2000's/early 2010's hairstyles crack me up.
Sadly i didn't grew up with these consoles when they got released. I got my hands on Playstation 1 and computer. I saw PS3 & Xbox360 only around 2011-2013 at my friends house.
It’s crazy that we’re now at a place where the console wars are over. These two were at each others throats and Nintendo just had the whole world by the balls both console and handheld.
The 7th gen was a last console generation, after that everyone started making a simple PC based architecture which eliminated visual uniqueness of each of the systems. In 8th and after, exclusive games start to become multiplatform and gaming started to feel less special and more for everyone. Now if you have a good PC, there is no reason to have a console, back than there were so many games and experiences you could not get on PC. It's like gaming become a black/white/gray SUV that flooded modern traffic: ugly, boring and everyone drives one.
the xbox one was more intended as a multimedia system than anything, hopefully the brand dies soon it sure derserves it. the ps4 started decent, but sony as a company is just as trash, it just can't afford as many failures as microsoft.
Well… what about the Wii U, the PS Vita and the 3DS? Those were considered quite nostalgic by most people, even though those consoles are a part of the 8th Generation.
@@DaREALReddie Vita and 3DS are portable, the rules are a bit different there =) Wii U pretty much existed because of the compatibility with Wii, there are a very few games specific to the system. Nostalgia is a terrible thing that blurs people minds and causes them to be aggressively protective over something instead of being analytical.
To be honest, I thought it was a little short myself, but I was also scared of creating a mindless yap session. If I do something similar again, I'll likely make it longer. Thank you!
32-bit era means something pretty different for PC gamers. The hardware went 32-bit in the mid-1980s with the 386, but games that actually required it didn't show up until the early 1990s, with stuff like Doom using 32-bit protected mode DOS. Similarly, while the Athlon 64 came out in the mid-2000s, games didn't start requiring a 64-bit OS until much later. It'll be decades before we have to make 128-bit processors. I doubt I'll live long enough to see it.
The 5th gen was so weird. Not only did you have the big 3 but you also had Atari, 3DO, FM Towns Marty, PC FX, Amiga 32 and a boat load of other crazy devices.
and the generation where they went beyond games into social media, all consoles have a web browser, and more including food delivery and contributing to help fight disease, the next generation shoved DRM and online advertising into the games.
@@Electro096 agree, and they focused on stuff other than apps games as well, but not excessive advertising, addicting games that cost money for DLCs, and excessive DRM.
The first console i played on was my dads old n64 and my moms old wii and i loved mario 64 so he got me a dslite with mario 64 ds and it was so fun (it was at the time the wiiu and 3ds where out)
Wii feels more like a 6.5 gen console with 7th gen features. Xbox 360 Arcade was kind of the same 6.5 feel. I say this because they weren’t quite HD consoles.
Honestly dude. It started in 2005 when the 360 first came out. Like, the 360 was a monster and still is the best Xbox console to date. I didn't get an Xbox 360 till I was 19 in 2009. Man.. after finally getting my own, it was such an amazing time. I still play my PS3, Wii\Wii U and 360 today more than modern consoles. Better games, simple gaming Consoles. That's all you need. Today, it's just insane how bad gaming has gotten {outside of the PC and Switch in my opinion}

Did the PS3 and Xbox 360 have downloadable patch updates to games? That, DLC and other games that require online access (there were a few), would make them no gos for me. The Wii has its own problem as it would constantly freeze on me.
Yes both definitely had patches and a ton of DLC, especially past 2010. PS3 in particular also takes a long time to download and instal patches since both downloading and installing were separate steps. Both consoles are still worth owning but they are about as online dependent as a PS4 or PS5.
Xbox one came out I picked up a 360 used played halo gears and fallout. Found love those three but besides those nothing else. have had the Xbox one branched up beyond what was available on Nintendo at the time, but still mainly focused on playing the Wii U then picked up my switch and my series X and play both but the switch gets more game time

Everything peaked at Gen 7, I will say the Wii was special but I'm glad the Switch isn't aim at the elderly anymore, My mom's Wii rots away in her garage for some reason she won't even give it to my sister but oh well I have my own Wii and Wii U. Really do miss the Wii weather and news and those demos you can download to your DS. As for PS3, man I miss the games it had and Playstation home.

Pretty interesting that in the end the 360 got last place, xbox has never been in 2nd or 1st. Pretty impossible for them to be better than PS or Nintendo but it was interesting.
The total hardware sales get mentioned a lot, but Xbox was raking it in for software sales and especially Xbox Live subs. $60 a year extra from 46 million subscribers.

The one game I wish I played in the generation of the Wii was Sonic Colors .when I was basically getting to the Wii U which I never could get one cuz my mom would let me..l I started playing more of the Wii library and my girlfriend when we were younger I was still a kid before we ended up fully dating as teenagers got me this game I'll never forget her in my best friend for doing that for me she's still a childhood person I'll always love and dear for letting me play Sonic Colors. Do not play the Sonic Colors Ultimate Game it is bad just stating the facts everyone
Gens 6 and 7 were practically the only times where all 3 big boys had something to offer, be it in terms of sales or quality. Even the handhelds were great. The GBA was pretty decent (if repetitive due to all it's rereleases) and the DS and PSP were absolutely amazing, with droves of casual and hardcore games alike. Gen 8? Xbox One was a slog to start and had practically no physical media, Sony _did_ fail with the Vita (even if it's pretty decent nowadays with it's backlogand whatnot) and the Wii U was painful for the first half of it's life (and still is in a lot of ways, now that the servers are down. The 3DS was GOATed, though.) Now/Gen 9? Honestly, the Switch is very good, but 1. It's flawed in many ways - terrible joy-cons, Nintendo's most mediocre sports games (+Paper Mario: The Origami King, and possibly more), IP burnout (albeit this is just me, but 2 Zelda games + re-releases, 2 Mario games + re-releases, 4+ Pokemon games counting Z, and 2 Splatoon games, to name a few), droves of shovelware, and just a fuckton of saturation in general (seriously, there's so many games on it that playing and even affording a decent chunk of the worthwhile ones is almost impossible if you don't make ridiculous amounts of money and time, since they keep coming out, keep getting more expensive, and never go on sale). 2. It's so "in between 8th and 9th gen" that it hardly constitutes as either. As for the rest of Gen 9... This is probably just a me thing, but neither of them are nearly as compelling as they have been historically. Exclusives feel lacking compared to legacy consoles, and while some objectively amazing games have come out for them, many of them like BG3 and a ton of indies aren't exclusive. In fact, this is a problem to the point where many games are still coming out for *Xbox ONE and PS4,* like Sea of Stars, Fall of Porcupine, and Freedom Planet 2 (FP2 even came out within the last month). If this generation is so non-compelling that so many devs are falling back on the previous one, that's a problem. You either have way too many games and terrible hardware or a couple pieces of machinery that serve no purpose other than to play interchangeable games and $3/4/500 of wannabe computers to put below your TV, since (besides a few exclusives each) they don't have anything more going for them than PCs (unlike historically, where the droves of exclusives and much lower cost gave them plenty reason to exist). Anything before gen 6 is pretty archaic overall and lacks the design perfections the future would hold, even if many master pieces like SoTN, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and Chrono Trigger (as some personal faves) stand the test of time. But hey. That's just an opinion. -A GAME OPINION!-
I used to play a lot of the Wii but I hated dealing with the batteries so I mostly just play GameCube games. I have fun memories of joining Facebook groups to get friend codes to play smash brothers brawl with people. tatsunoko vs capcom was a lot of fun for the only fighting game on the Wii and Mario kart Wii is probably one of the best Mario karts. Most of my Wii games are super kidsy. I don’t play my Wii anymore. Once I got a PlayStation 3 I just kinda hated a lot of my Wii library. When I got my PlayStation 3 It came with Uncharted 3. So I just play demos until I discovered PlayStation Home. The first games I bought on the PlayStation 3 are Final Fantasy 13 and Mugen Souls. My early library was ass. I fell in love with Dead or alive 5 and Tekken and that’s when I truly got into online gaming
The 7th generation was the last time we saw a true console "war." Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo were ruthless in trying you win you over with quality games. Even the handhelds were fantastic in that generation, and even mobile phone games displayed considerably more effort than the garbage available today.
The last great generation for me. All the AAA franchises I liked were at their peak. Online and split screen multiplayer coexisted peacefully. Everyone had a mic, for better or worse. Each console had a distinct personality with different aims and goals. Each consoles UI had very distinct design language, the XMB and Wii Menu were elegant. 360's started great with the blades and went downhill from there. Every generation since has been more and more disappointing.
So many ppl grifting on this nostalgia rn. I love it. The generation was great bc I was in my late teens early 20s not bc of the consoles but ok go off.

That was the last time Nintendo was as powerful as the Xbox and PlayStation what took me away from Nintendo was no achievements Xbox took me away and PlayStation almost lost me like Nintendo did but years later Sony add trophies 🏆 Nintendo still doesn’t have achievements still not more powerful then the Wii

My gaming goes back to the original game board and the NES my family had the NES in the house so I was born October 19 90 so I grew up. Nintendo picked up all the Nintendo home and handheld and a PlayStation one, but only played three franchises on that PlayStation one tomb raider, Spyro crash.

The one game I wish I played in the generation of the Wii was Sonic Colors .when I was basically getting to the Wii U which I never could get one cuz my mom would let me..l I started playing more of the Wii library and my girlfriend when we were younger I was still a kid before we ended up fully dating as teenagers got me this game I'll never forget her in my best friend for doing that for me she's still a childhood person I'll always love and dear for letting me play Sonic Colors. Do not play the Sonic Colors Ultimate Game it is bad just stating the facts everyone

Gens 6 and 7 were practically the only times where all 3 big boys had something to offer, be it in terms of sales or quality. Even the handhelds were great. The GBA was pretty decent (if repetitive due to all it's rereleases) and the DS and PSP were absolutely amazing, with droves of casual and hardcore games alike.
Gen 8? Xbox One was a slog to start and had practically no physical media, Sony _did_ fail with the Vita (even if it's pretty decent nowadays with it's backlogand whatnot) and the Wii U was painful for the first half of it's life (and still is in a lot of ways, now that the servers are down. The 3DS was GOATed, though.)
Now/Gen 9? Honestly, the Switch is very good, but 1. It's flawed in many ways - terrible joy-cons, Nintendo's most mediocre sports games (+Paper Mario: The Origami King, and possibly more), IP burnout (albeit this is just me, but 2 Zelda games + re-releases, 2 Mario games + re-releases, 4+ Pokemon games counting Z, and 2 Splatoon games, to name a few), droves of shovelware, and just a fuckton of saturation in general (seriously, there's so many games on it that playing and even affording a decent chunk of the worthwhile ones is almost impossible if you don't make ridiculous amounts of money and time, since they keep coming out, keep getting more expensive, and never go on sale).
2. It's so "in between 8th and 9th gen" that it hardly constitutes as either.
As for the rest of Gen 9... This is probably just a me thing, but neither of them are nearly as compelling as they have been historically. Exclusives feel lacking compared to legacy consoles, and while some objectively amazing games have come out for them, many of them like BG3 and a ton of indies aren't exclusive.
In fact, this is a problem to the point where many games are still coming out for *Xbox ONE and PS4,* like Sea of Stars, Fall of Porcupine, and Freedom Planet 2 (FP2 even came out within the last month). If this generation is so non-compelling that so many devs are falling back on the previous one, that's a problem.
You either have way too many games and terrible hardware or a couple pieces of machinery that serve no purpose other than to play interchangeable games and $3/4/500 of wannabe computers to put below your TV, since (besides a few exclusives each) they don't have anything more going for them than PCs (unlike historically, where the droves of exclusives and much lower cost gave them plenty reason to exist).
Anything before gen 6 is pretty archaic overall and lacks the design perfections the future would hold, even if many master pieces like SoTN, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, and Chrono Trigger (as some personal faves) stand the test of time.
But hey. That's just an opinion. -A GAME OPINION!-
I used to play a lot of the Wii but I hated dealing with the batteries so I mostly just play GameCube games. I have fun memories of joining Facebook groups to get friend codes to play smash brothers brawl with people. tatsunoko vs capcom was a lot of fun for the only fighting game on the Wii and Mario kart Wii is probably one of the best Mario karts.
Most of my Wii games are super kidsy. I don’t play my Wii anymore. Once I got a PlayStation 3 I just kinda hated a lot of my Wii library. When I got my PlayStation 3 It came with Uncharted 3. So I just play demos until I discovered PlayStation Home. The first games I bought on the PlayStation 3 are Final Fantasy 13 and Mugen Souls. My early library was ass. I fell in love with Dead or alive 5 and Tekken and that’s when I truly got into online gaming
i grew up with all these consoles although i never liked the wii at all and i think the 6th generation is objectively the best gen
The 7th generation was the last time we saw a true console "war." Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo were ruthless in trying you win you over with quality games. Even the handhelds were fantastic in that generation, and even mobile phone games displayed considerably more effort than the garbage available today.
The last great generation for me. All the AAA franchises I liked were at their peak. Online and split screen multiplayer coexisted peacefully. Everyone had a mic, for better or worse. Each console had a distinct personality with different aims and goals. Each consoles UI had very distinct design language, the XMB and Wii Menu were elegant. 360's started great with the blades and went downhill from there.
Every generation since has been more and more disappointing.

That was the last time Nintendo was as powerful as the Xbox and PlayStation what took me away from Nintendo was no achievements Xbox took me away and PlayStation almost lost me like Nintendo did but years later Sony add trophies 🏆 Nintendo still doesn’t have achievements still not more powerful then the Wii

My gaming goes back to the original game board and the NES my family had the NES in the house so I was born October 19 90 so I grew up. Nintendo picked up all the Nintendo home and handheld and a PlayStation one, but only played three franchises on that PlayStation one tomb raider, Spyro crash.
The Wii U and 3DS got me through that generation mostly with the occasional game on Xbox one
