    We had to find an emergency replacement refrigerator a couple weeks ago and found a great deal on a used Samsung fridge. Too good of a deal apparently because within 24 hours of connecting the water line the icemaker had a chunk of ice big enough it actually broke some of the plastic. It didn't come with a warranty but has a return policy and I was afraid I was going to have to return the fridge. I called Samsung and it took a bit of back and forth but eventually, they did set up a free service ticket for me. I really hope this fixes the issue. Thanks for the video.

    Appreciate the fix. Decided to call Samsung and they confirmed a known issue and will replace all the parts in this video no cost. The fridge is about 4 years old and out of warranty but they will honor the repair.

    Note : call Samsung! This repair is COVERED!
    We picked up the food grade silicone from a local appliance shop & I cleaned surfaces with alcohol then sealed. We defrosted / unplugged the fridge for 24 hours then caulked the inside and outside of the ice maker housing on the bottom left.. (long side that meets the left fridge wall). I pulled out the ice maker and auger assembly to do this. Let it cure for 24 hours then reassembled and turned on.
    Note: take the bottom back panel off & use an extra fan to add cooling until the fridge reaches correct temperatures.
    Since doing this I do not have any water in my ice maker dispenser! Works great & worth the 48 hr inconvenience!

      I also had a tech come and fix mine and so far I haven't had the freezing up issue anymore. Unfortunately I don't know how long Samsung will be fixing the issue for free. My guess is that at some point they will stop. This way people know how to fix the issue in the event Samsung no longer is willing to cover the costs. At the end of the video I do tell people to contact Samsung first. Glad to hear you got the issue resolved.

    A lot of unnecessary parts are being replaced to fix the ice maker that will not work again in a few months or a year depending on you climate. Your first video was a good start, you need to keep the moisture out of that compartment which is almost impossible on these Samsung units. There is no reason to replace the MB unless the unit has no led's on the front control panel, and also no need to replace the auger control unit... this is wasted money. Replacing the ice maker itself isn't a bad idea depending on how old the unit is, the finish on the plate will wear off after time. Here is the problem: There is no way of sealing the ice bin or the shute completely, Bad design plain and simple. The ice bin should have been in the door and away from the ice maker itself, and a rubber flap should be on the ice maker compartment that closes when the left side door is open and then opens again once the door is closed. Bad engineering!

    • @HomeRepairHub
      @HomeRepairHub  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So this is the Samsung recommended repair and so far I have not had any ice build up. There are actually 2 issue with the ice maker. The first was the compartment not being completely sealed, which is resolved with the silicone. The second was that the ice maker was not stopping once the ice bucket was full. This is the reason the Auger and CB are replaced. The sensor is replaced on the Auger and the CB is updated. Based on a comment I got the other day I believe Samsung is still offering this repair free of charge, though I can't guarantee that. I would suggest contacting them. I agree it is a lot to replace and can be expensive if you have to do this yourself. I also agree its bad engineering.

    • @victoreklund
      @victoreklund ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree. Of course it's bad design. How can someone design an Ice maker with no seal to the outside air as soon as you open the fridge door. Of course warmer air is going to rush in every time you open it. It's so stupid. I wish someone would make a replacement unit with some kind of hatch or rubber lid function that opens and closes when the door is used.

      reach who? The Samsung tech? You can either call them just google Samsung support, I think its 1-800 Samsung or something like that, or you can IM them on their website. That is one of the issue that causes the icemaker to freeze up.

  • @tomfriedman6711
    @tomfriedman6711 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I spoke with Samsung this morning. They said the "ice maker program" is for refrigerators 2012 and newer. It does not apply to older models.

    • @HomeRepairHub
      @HomeRepairHub  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did not know that. I assume you could change out all the parts yourself. Though I would verify that the replacement parts are compatible. I am guessing the reason they fix 2012 or newer because there is a compatibility issue with some of the parts, though I don't know that for sure. Samsung usually works through a local vendor to fix each fridge, so you might be able to contact an appliance store in your area that does repair work for Samsung and they might know more. If I ever buy a fridge with an icemaker again it will be a side by side. Good luck.

    • @HomeRepairHub
      @HomeRepairHub  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would hope so. Though I don't know. With a new one you should have a warranty and if you have issues with frost on the ice maker or the ice maker freezing up make sure you contact them. I would assume they would come out fix the issue, as it seems like Samsung at least has a valid fix now. I haven't had any issues since I did the video.

      My personal opinion is to go with a side by side model vs the french door style. It is my understanding that the newer Samsung fridges use a different type of ice maker and don't have this problem. That being said I don't know much about them. I will be purchasing an extended warranty on my next fridge.

      www.samsung.com/us/support/service/refrigerators/ice-maker-service/. Here is a link to some of the ice maker issues. I would assume that Samsung has a document somewhere but I don't know where it is. This is the repair the technician who Samsung sent out performed. He is the one that informed me that this was the fix that Samsung was doing for the ice maker issue on specific fridge models. At the end of the video I recommend calling Samsung to see if your fridge would be covered and to determine if the fix will work for your model. For any official documentation I would contact Samsung. I can tell you that the changes made by the technician fixed my issue but I can't guarantee they will work for all fridges.

    Why replace PCB and auger?

    • @HomeRepairHub
      @HomeRepairHub  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is the Samsung recommend fix. One of the issues, was that the icemaker did not stop making ice when the bucket was full. According to the technician that replaced mine the PCB needed to be updated and the auger has the sensor which needed to be changed out. I was able to get Samsung to replace all the parts at no cost. I suggest talking to them first and see if they will cover the repairs.

    • @HomeRepairHub
      @HomeRepairHub  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the fix done in May and everything has been working without issue since. I believe the big change was the auger and the control board. I think the main issue was that the ice maker would not stop making ice when the tray was full. This I think is what cause the ice maker to get stuck. So if you haven't had that done it might be worth calling Samsung again and seeing if they will come out and fix it. I have heard from many people that past fixes have not worked, but this one seems to actually fix the issue.
