    Great hands on guys!
    I honestly love this camera, I bought m4/3 for its compactness (I sometimes keep my E-M5 I in my coat pocket just going around town!) and this is the camera that was missing, packing all the EM1/G9 goodies in a pocketable camera.
    Honestly, though, I agree it comes out a year or two too late (it’s actually almost 5 years since the mkII, as it came out on February), so I wish I’d come with a lower price tag, around 1000. At 200£ more it’s got competition and it feels less packed with features than it actually is.

    The success of these cameras lies in their compactness and quality. The IBIS is great - Olympus has remained true to its philosophy and is not chasing Sony. Very balanced review in an enviable environment.

    The E-M5.3 is one of my many cameras, and while it's not perfect by any means, it's one of my favorites. I think it represents the essence of m43: compact size, lightweight yet packed with features and good IQ.

    Went from Olympus to Canon, Fujifilm, and back to Olympus. Love the size and there are a lot of nice second-hand lenses that you get for 50% of the new price. So an affordable and easy-to-carry-around system, perfect for an amateur.

    I'm tempted. My best experience with M43 was with the E-P5 for the size and amazing back touch screen. My biggest gripe had been the C-AF and when Olympus released the 2k E-M1 II I left the system. I wasn't willing to pony up 2k just to get decent C-AF plus loose the size of the E-P5. This camera seems late to the party but I guess better late then never. Maybe I'll give it a try...

    This is definitely a compelling new camera from Olympus. My last one was the em5mk2. I had then since switched to Fuji x series for the past several years. But, I am yet again open to the possibilities of a new camera and Olympus is one of my favorites. Perhaps this new one.
    What I'd like to know is how is the buffer? While I really enjoyed the em5mk2, i felt the buffer was noticeably less compared to the em1mk1 I owned before it. Waiting for buffer to catch up was a handicap at times.
    If generational technology does in fact trickle down subsequent model lines, I'm hoping the em5mk3 has improved the buffer to at least as good as the em1mk1, I could live with that. If not, I think I may have to reconsider.
    I have not see it yet, but, like previous em5's, I would assume there will be an accessory vertical grip that adds an extra battery as well as extra buttons and control wheels that attaches to the bottom of the accessory hand grip you showed and mentioned.

    I have several cameras for different purposes but the one that makes me happiest to use is my EM5 mkii. With the 12-40 pro lens I can bring it with me anywhere and know I'm going to get something good. But as I'm primarily a filmmaker I'm disappointed that the 4k is only 8 bit. It is SO much fun to shoot video with great stabilization on any lens with such a compact body, and I've gotten very usable HD video out of the mkii. If the mkiii were 10 bit I would upgrade, but not being able to push the color in a grade is a drag, so I'll probably stay with the mkii for photos for now and shoot video with my GH5 or BMPCC4K.

    I currently have 3 Olympus Cameras...EM1 Mark ii, EM5 Mark ii and the original EM10. I think that my next camera will be the EM5 Mark iii. I like the few additional features that the camera offers in addition to the increase in megapixels over the EM5 mark ii. Also, I had an original EM 5 Mark 1 in silver. I miss that and think that I would go silver again with this new camera. It is beautiful. Great job folks!

    Hi guys! Just yesterday I received my new EM5-Mark III. I am excited. I previously had the original EM5, then the EM5 Mark ii in addition to the EM1 mark ii and the original EM10. I like the jump to 20 megapixels and the form factor. I bought silver this time. I had the original EM5 in silver and honestly, I missed that. There is certainly a difference in weight between the iii and the ii. I carry my EM5 models with an L-bracket on my hip in a holster Think Tank bag. I was concerned that this new model wouldn't fit in that bag, but it fits just perfectly. I was a little bit surprised to see the lack of function buttons compared to the previous EM5 models. I guess that I will just have to get use to the new Custom setting on the dial. I know that I am going to love this camera and I love how Olympus continues to offer new firmware keeping all of the cameras in the Micro 4/3rds line up to date. Thanks again - Great review - Oh, and I love Moab!

    Nice video! The stabilization, weather resistance, and 4k are super appealing compared to what I use currently for a mix of photo and video. It's too bad they didn't compromise a bit on size to get the EM1mkII/EM1-X battery into the camera, especially if they intended those users to get this as a second body.

    • @TheCameraStoreTV
      @TheCameraStoreTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. But, to keep the size down, and maintain heat protection in the new circuitry, they needed to use a smaller battery. It is impressive that they were able to get the battery performance to match the Mark II battery from an engineering standpoint. But, we obviously still would want a bigger battery with a longer life even if it sacrificed a bit of the compactness.

I want to go full on mirrorless as a hybrid photo/video shooter and am torn between the E-M5 iii, the Fuji X-S10, the Nikon Z50 or the Panasonic G9. The 1 issue I have with the Olympus and Panasonic cameras is I feel the next generation cameras (maybe late 2021/early 2022) will have better sensors in them.

      I think Christ and Jordan focus more on the video output? Honestly, I would have liked a little more detail about the 1080p video from both reviews; as nice as 4k is and how Panasonic and Sony's is higher bitrate than Olympus', I can create commercial-grade stuff with 1080p if it doesn't look soft, blurred, with blown highlights. I don't know, if I was doing a review, I would go on and on about color. I felt like Panasonic and Sony cameras had this cold and sometimes greenish output (Why were Panasonic skies green?!?!), while Olympus had some of the best JPEG color of any manufacture. Panasonic apparently has made great progress in this generation, and I haven't handled any newer camera from the past few years (don't feel the yearly upgrade urge, but I'm shopping now!)

      @@evshrug Jordan does but Christ... wait Christ? Nu-uh! Just because he has a beard, doesn't mean he's the Son of God. Haha! Yeah I know, it's a typo. Anyway, back on topic. Chris focuses on stills and Jordan on video.

    • @evshrug
      @evshrug 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ssej llenrad • Haha! Well, you know, Chris is Christian which...
      But yeah, I wonder if Chris was as bored by the E-M5 mkIII As he was with the scenery he was shooting, or if he was feeling depressed by the scene and it affected his perception. He just wanted “more,” a bigger splash, and focused on what has changed rather than how the whole system works together. He spent most of the video comparing to the E-M1 mkII, a pro camera, and not till the 12 minute mark did he start comparing the E-M5III to its closest competitors (mostly alluding to it being “not enough” through the beginning but seemingly fairly comparable when he actually got down to it (not worse or better).
      Jordan’s review section is almost better, with the mention of how well it works with video, and the confidence and smoothness of the PDAF.
      Anyway, since Chris must’ve been hoping for major innovations, the tone seems more negative than if he had been just considering how usable the system is. I still found their video entertaining and fun, but this video seemed to talk more about the E-M5III as a tool and enjoyable object.

    I still have an E-M1, and agree completely with your thoughts on how beautifully built these cameras are, with great weather sealing, and how portable the whole kit including a bunch of lenses is. That said, having used a fair few other systems, the thing which holds me back from upgrading the E-M1 and going fully m4/3 is more fundamental than those - the sensor. Once they manage to get the same kind of low-noise performance as the best APS-C cameras, and match the 14-bit output of their peers, I’ll look at it again, but the improvements have been so marginal for such a long time, I’m hoping for a major step forward for the E-M1 mk3. The only other thing I wish they were able to improve more is Eye-detect AF, which really is useful and not just a gimmick feature. It’s a shame Olympus and Panasonic diverged on full Lens compatibility, which diminishes the m4/3 system a bit.

    Hi. Thank you very much for the detailed review. I currently own the em5 mark ii and will be upgrading to either the em5 mark iii or the em1 mark iii. I prefer the smaller more portable body of the em5 but I wanted your opinion on how much better the em1 would be in terms of autofocus tracking and nailing focus for shooting sailboats from a kayak or shooting skiers or teens playing soccer. I feel that there were many out of focus shots with the em5 mark ii and I'm wondering how much better the focusing is on the em5 mark iii and how this compares to the em1 mark iii. I only shoot fast moving objects maybe 20% of the time so I'm debating between improved autofocus and improved tracking versus portability. All other features on the em5 are sufficient for me. I do like the joystick on the em1 and live ND and handheld high res but at the end of the day it is really between autofocus on moving objects and portability. I would appreciate your feedback. Maybe you could do a comparison between these two cameras in the future? Thank you. KR

    That low-light MFT ‘mushiness’ is what put me off keeping an Olympus E-M10 II I purchased a few years back, that I returned due to the faulty built-in flash that didn’t work. I added a little more money and exchanged it for a Fuji X-E2. A bit of a shame really, as shots I took in daylight were super sharp and very well exposed. Even a little better than the Fuji. But again, when the light dropped, the deterioration in image quality was pronounced!

      Yeah, you've got to either make with the grain, or get some of the more expensive primes to do low-light with m43. Oddly the AF in Panasonic and Olympus is about the best available mirrorless AF for low-light useage, on par with the pro DSLR's.

    I'm trying to spend as little as I can get away with, but I'm not sure which will provide the best value between the Panasonic GX85, G85, and Olympus OM-D E-M5 MK II or III.
    I'm thinking about finally upgrading after many years with my E-PL5, I have a nice big Olympus flash and a lot of Oly experience, but paid work these days looks like video, and apparently Panasonic rules the roost there. I prefer Olympus color reproduction, though the latest Panasonic generation is garnering praise for their color. I have mostly low requirements: 8MP or better, good 1600 ISO or less, IBIS is certainly a plus I wouldn't want to be without, and good sound would be very important with video. Crisp, quality 1080p video is good enough for me. I've actually been to the locations in this video, and got amazing shots with the old 4/3rds E-500. I also owned the E-620, and loved that body style with the flippy screen and compact size (though I wish the EVF was to the side like a rangefinder). I've often found old Panasonic JPEGs to have skies with a greenish color cast, which I hate, but if that was "fixed" and TTL exposure was possible with my Olympus flash, I'd be willing to try a Panasonic body with IBIS.

    My only real knock on this camera would be the price is a bit high. You can knock some of the features not being as updated, but look at the total package compared to the APSC competitors. Really good (the best actually) IBIS, weather sealed, extremely low weight, and fully articulating screen are stand out features when put together vs the competition.

    Great preview, as a long time m43 Olympus user who recently switched to Panasonic G9 I do, once again, feel Olympus has kind of hit a wall. The camera looks fine by it self and I am sure it will produce nice images as always with m43 but most of the tech, part from the new OLED viewfinder, is reused old tech. If the pricing rumors are right, one would be much better of (if one can handle 200g more weight) with the E-M1 Mk II which would give you far higher frame rate, among other things for almost the same price. It's more or less the same tech but with some pluses to the older E-M1 Mk II. Somehow it feels as if though Olympus needed to protect the E-M1 Mk II.
    Thanks for the preview!

      Rasmus Mattsson The EVF has the same 120fps frame rate as the EM1 mkII, only the size is different. Honestly, this camera is pretty much a cheaper, thinner, lighter EM1 II, and given that that’s one of the best cameras in the m4/3 area that’s quite positive.
      Sure, I wish it was a bit cheaper - 999 it would be in a league on its own, while at 200£ more it’s got a lot of competition - but the 200+ grams more of the G9 which is the only better camera in its league are a lot to put up with, I’d say they defy the whole point of a m4/3.
      I respect your opinion, but I honestly think that this is the best specs/size ratio you can get in the market

      @@FabriSlv That's fine, everybody has got different opinions :)
      I never said the EVF doesn't have the same refresh though, just that it is slightly smaller and it's OLED instead. I think the m43 system is much about size as a complete system in which case the 100-200g extra of the G9 or an E-M1.2 doesn't make much of a difference. I know since I've been with the system for almost 8 years with most of Olympus Pro glass in my bag + some smaller primes.
      The problem with the E-M5.3 is that you can get much lighter, smaller and larger sensor cameras in terms of the Fuji X-T30 and X-E3, with larger sensor and as small lenses if you go for the F2 primes. And all of this at a cheaper price. Of course, not all things can be compared, Fuji for example lack the terrific IBIS. I can't really agree it's a good bang for the buck in this case. Unless the size is really that important which it might be, you get so much more for your money with the E-M1.2.
      And of course I respect your opinion as well! I just can't agree with it from my point of view and for what I do. :-)

      As for Fuji, on that I agree, although Fuji lenses tend to be bigger and more expensive. I actually though of switching to either Fuji or Sony APS-C but I'm quite happy with my pictures now. And the X-T30 more than the IBIS lack the weather sealing, which in Wales is as necessary as oxygen, and is (slightly) more expensive than this MkIII. Not saying that this one is definitely the best option, but my comment was rather because I don't fully get what the G9 has that is so much better than this camera, it's an honest question because I need to change my EM5.1 and they're both in the league of what I can afford. For now I think I'd rather go with the EM5.3 because of the phase detect AF and lower size/weight (I do bring my EM5.1 with me pretty much everywhere, often in the pocket of my coat)

For me the EM5MK3 is really a second camera, faithful to M43 strengths of good, but not the absolute best, quality in a package that doesn't break the bank or your back. I have a Sony A7R3, which is a great camera. But try carrying it around with lenses for a day and ask if you really need that quality to print on A3 or display on a 4k tv? My friend bought the original Olympus OMD EM5 when it first came out around 7 or so years ago, at the time I was shooting with my Nikon D80, he offered to let me use his EM5 for a day. so I took it to the beach with me. and also did some street photography, as soon as I saw my exposure change when I was adjusting the dials, I could not believe my eyes. and I loved the feature where you could touch the screen and fire the shot at the same time, I was tilting the screen, and aiming the camera to my right, and I would take pictures of people and they wouldn't even realize I was doing it. it was a great street photography feature. I felt like this camera was the future, and my Nikon D80 was like an obsolete 78 record. I really loved that OMD so much that from that day forward I was a preacher of mirrorless. but at that time I had been shooting apsc for a while, and I wanted to go to full frame, and there was no full frame mirrorless around 7 or so years ago, so I bought a new 5Dlll when that first came out, but the day I bought my 5Dlll I felt like I was buying yesterdays camera, witch was a bummer to be buying this cool new camera that already felt outdated, because it wasn't nearly as cool as the OMD, but I wanted the full frame sensor, and from that day on I was just waiting for a mirrorless full frame camera with good performance, and I waited all the way until the Sony A7r lll came out, and I finally bought the full frame mirrorless that I wanted since the day the OMD first came out, and I am happy, now finally all these years later. Nikon and Canon have joined in, and Panasonic. and since for me Olympus was the company that opened my eyes. I have always wished that Olympus went full frame. * on a side Note, I cannot even tell you have many times over the years I told people that mirrorless was the future, and how many times people told me that they will never be as good as a DSLR. and now 99% of all those people have gone mirrorless. for me it was so obvious from day one. but now everyone has jumped on the band wagon, and not to many people will every admit that they were one of the fools arguing against mirrorless being the future.
    ( Olympus Please go full frame ). they should've joined the alliance with Panasonic. there is only so much that they can do with micro four thirds sensors. but I do think the OMD is still a great camera for people who want to carry the smaller glass.
    but with my Sony I have the 28f2 / 55 f1.8 and 85 f1.8 witch are all small lenses. the 35 f1.8 wasn't out at the time I bought the 28 f2 or I would have bought the 35 f1.8. so I have full frame with small glass. but I might be buying the Tamron 70/180 f2.8 when that comes out. because it looks small and light.

At that time, this camera blow me away. This was the camera I was waiting for. The dynamic range was better than that of the Canon, and the overall operations with that EVF was just a pleasure to use. The E-M5 was my back up and a lot of times my first choice. But after that nothing happend.
      Then I tried an A7R I. Damn that thing was quirky but the images where superb. I bought it, because Olympus comes with that completely underwhelming E-M5 MKII and I needed a replacemaent for the 5D MKII. After that the Olympus gets a hard time. The A7RI and the E-M5 I and II where very similar in terms of the body and the AF system. No usable tracking with both of them. But the Sony with the Zeiss 16-35mm F4 was so so so much better in I.Q. as the E-M5 with the 9-18mm F4-5.6 that I preferred the Sony over the Olympus.
      Then I get one of the first A7RIII and after using that camera for the first time, I never looked back. Thats even two years ago, and now Olympus comes with the first E-M5 with tracking, but again with an outdated sensor, old EVF and 1200$. What a bad joke. And like you said, when I want small lenses, you get them for the Sony as well. It's just missing a small, affordable tele zoom like the Tamron 70-300mm F4-5.6, everything else is there.

A Fuji with it's little primes, isn't really much more to carry but the step up in I.Q. is huge. And when I want FF, I can take my Sony and some small pancakes with with me. It isn't that much more as they always say. I have Olympus mFT and Sony FF and when someone would ask me, I would take my older A7RI combined with the 50mm F1.8, before I go for an E-M5 MKIII and something like an 25mm F1.8. It's the same weight and size but the I.Q. is not comparable. When you see lenses like the new Samyang 18mm F2.8 pancake it's gettin really hard to argue. And like I said, when I want it compact, I think, somethink like the 1" could be more interessting then mFT. I bought the G5X MKII some weeks ago, and with it's 24-120mm F1.8-2.8 it's way more versatile then my mFT stuff. And I don't have to switch lenses, yeahh.

    I don't really see a reason to go even from my e-m10 mk2 to a e-m5 mk3 for the cost right now since my main camera is the RB67. I don't use auto focus 99% of the time since I use older lenses adapted so that doesn't matter, 16mp to 20mp doesn't mean much for me, and the only other feature (image stabilization) appears to be the same 5-axis tech. A great choice for photographers who have a reason to carry less bulky and heavy cameras and lenses.

      MFT lenses have the exact same size and weight as full frame lenses if they offer equivalent performance, because physics can't be tricked. An f/2.8 lens on MFT delivers the same results as an f/4 lens on aps-c and an f/5.6 lens on full frame. MFT is only smaller when you convert the focal length to 35mm equivalent, but not the aperture. That's a marketing trick way too many people fall for.

    • @pb8185
      @pb8185 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Landscope 360 I have both formats. While you’re definitely not wrong about equivalence, M43 does have its benefits. Regardless of equivalence, you can find sharp lenses in M43 system that is much smaller than larger formats. If you want DOF for landscape then full frame loses its advantage, as in order to get the same DOF, you have to slow down the shutter or bump up the ISO. M43 is easier to stabilize sensor, and performs so much better than full frame IBIS. This means I can do a lot more with M43 for landscape without taking a tripod.

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pb8185 Or you could just take a tripod, which will give you higher quality images than any amount on IBIS.
      Besides, especially for landscapes the advantages of full frame become more pronounced. Most of the time, landscape photography is done at the lowest possible ISO the camera can manage. Well, some full frame options go as low as ISO 64, whereas MFT is stuck at ISO 200. And it's two stops more noisy at the same ISO anyway. That means, landscape shots on a tripod on full frame will not only be much more detailed thanks to often more than twice as much resolution, they'll also be a whopping 4 stops cleaner. That difference is massive, especially in situations where the scene is contrasty and demands the raising of shadows in post.
      IBIS can be convenient for long exposure photography in a pinch, but it's more of a gimmick. Certainly not a substitute for a tripod.
      And it's definitely not an advantage in terms of noise for MFT over full frame. I can bump my ISO up to 800 on full frame and still only just produce the same amount of noise that's the minimum MFT can deliver. Meaning MFT IBIS is only an advantage in situations where it's more than 2 stops better than full frame stabilization *and* it's so dark that I need more than ISO 800 on full frame *and* the scene is static enough to allow MFT to drop the shutter speed *and* a tripod isn't practical. That leaves pretty much only shooting dimly lit still life in places where tripods aren't allowed with unstabilized glass and no IBIS on full frame. Really, really rare.

    The point you guys made about weight is a really good one, but isn’t the aps-c systems like FujiFilm’s system equally small and light without having a sucky 4/3 sensor?

    Appreciate your review. I own the EM10 mk3, which is very similar to the M5 mk3 body wise. Except for the better sensor, and that will only be different in RAW files, I see no big reason to change bodies. In fact I prefer the flip only screen of the EM10 because I am mainly a stills shooter. My biggest concern is the price. As you mentioned, this is a VERY competitive market and the APSC offerings from Fuji and Sony at around the same price point makes me really wonder what Olympus is thinking. And you have the Pana G95 in there as well. I love Olympus glass but then again you are paying a high premium for it in the Pro series. If this camera was $800, it would be more successful in my opinion. Otherwise, my EM10 mk3, and in some ways the EM10 mk2 still are very usable at a much lower price. There are some features, like the menus that you did not discuss. I hope you do in the full review. I love watching you two on location, you actually act like humans instead of BOTs with cameras like so many other YTube reviewers. Regards from the High Desert in New Mexico.

      @@khanhsup I have had an E-M5 for years. Provided that I take the (kit) lens off, it fits into my jacket pocket. The lens goes into another.

    Do you find the smaller sensor limits your ability to shoot landscapes distortion free?

    • @balboa0621
      @balboa0621 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't personally tested this, but I think the general belief is that the opposite is true. M43 tends to perform better in the corners in terms of sharpness and distortion because it is easier to over- engineer the lenses and size of the elements relative to the size of the sensor.

    "...alive and well for a long time." I wonder if Tony is watching...
    I've been an Olympus user for some time. I quite love my original E-M1, but this E-M5 Mk III doesn't interest me. Unless, Olympus can bring out a compelling third gen E-M1, I may just buy another Canon body. My old 7d is still languishing in a bag somewhere, along with a good number of EF lenses just waiting for an adapter and a new R body. Mind you, if I do buy another Canon body, it won't be long before I'm bemoaning the size and weight all over again... We photographers are a hard lot to please. :-)

      Landscope 360 As an XT2 D850 owner , the advantage isn’t the camera but in the system as a whole. If you consider lenses above 55 mm especially in the x system , the sheer compact nature of lenses such as 50-200 & 100-400 simply walks all over Fuji who’s lenses offer nothing over the full frame equivalent. When you take a system with you on a long trek, crowded trains & busses you will appreciate the m4/3 advantage

      I shoot panasonic now and use my Olympus lenses but I don’t even bother with Fro because of his negative view of m4/3.
