      Next step is Olympus Stylus1 or XZ-2 for daily carry.

    This camera does not have great technological advances and in fact, it comes a couple of years late, but it brings together a series of features that other brands have forgotten to implement or have done so halfway. Canon: 24p, variable display (M6MII), viewfinder (separate, really?) 4k with full sensor and autofocus, IBIS, sealed. Sony: Variable and fully touch screen, IBIS (6400 does not have), price (6600 is more expensive), sealed Fuji: Variable screen, IBIS, up to 29 min of recording (XT30 is limited to 15 in 1080 and 10 in 4K), sealed (XT30 is not). On paper it is the most balanced camera on the market, it would be necessary to see what the reviews are like and if people lose the fovia to small sensors. I would buy it

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This camera costs as much as the X-T3, not X-T30. And you've conveniently forgot to mention that all the competitors you listed have one stop better subject isolation and noise performance, significantly better dynamic range, in some cases substantially higher resolution and offer much better autofocus.

    • @Viguileras
      @Viguileras 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key word is balance my friend, and yes, certainly these sensors suffer from some more noise but nothing that with a good photographic technique can not be compensated; We will have to wait for the tests to see how it behaves. If M4 / 3 were so bad there wouldn't be so many happy people

    Great review. I shoot on a GH5 (amongst others) but recommended an EM5ii last year to a beginner because I knew it would suit their food photography needs. I feel though in this modern market that Olympus and Panasonic have to be more realistic about their pricing and actually need faster product rollout cycles. I was looking forward to seeing this camera but after 4 years there's no way I could recommend it now in relation to the competition. I hate that they've made it cheaper feeling too.

    As always a well balanced review. Thank you for that. I suppose like many of the manufacturers they have to make distinctions between models. Overall there is enough here to attract EM-5 MKII owners to consider upgrading. I have the EM-1 MKII and am replacing my PEN-F with the EM-5 MKIII as my “Everyday carry everywhere “ camera. This will give me at least 90% of the M1 MKII features in that ultra lightweight small form factor. I could put this camera and my 5 primes into a very small shoulder bag and not notice any weight or bulk at all!

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      How is this a signal that MFT is still alive? They literally re-released the E-M1 II in a smaller body. If anything, this camera displays how little Olympus is willing to invest in R&D which confirms that MFT is on the way out.

    • @IvanRiveraStagea
      @IvanRiveraStagea 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@youknowwho9247 It's a trickle-down product, so it is kind of expected. The XT30 is derived from the XT3, the G95 from the G9, etc. The fact that there is still top-down product development is a sign of life. The M43 system might not be in its best state, but it is still alive. Sony's release of the IMX492 sensor is also another sign of life, as there is still sensor development for this system.

    • @IvanRiveraStagea
      @IvanRiveraStagea 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@youknowwho9247 While the three cameras you mentioned are excellent, great IBIS is a large selling point for M43 if the shooting situation allows for lower shutter speeds. I maintain both full frame and M43 systems because of this. I think most m43 owners entered this ecosystem knowing its limitations (at least I'd like to think so).

    • @youknowwho9247
      @youknowwho9247 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@IvanRiveraStagea Fair enough. Although I see little reason not to just use a tripod. Produces sharper images than any IBIS and is called for in most static scenes anyway. I can see two situations in which I'd want great IBIS - dragging the shutter to show movement and static scenes in places where tripods aren't allowed.
      Then again, from what I've heard the IBIS in Nikon's Z cameras is good for 4-5 stops as well.

    This camera and the EM1 mark II make Olympus very attractive for a mix of photo and solo video work like I do. Right now I use two M50 bodies and a M5, so Olympus stabilization plus solid 4k would be very appealing. It's too bad they didn't go with the battery in the EM1 mark II. The M5 mark III's initial price does feel a bit much but that's usually how camera companies do things. Another negative right now is that the 12-100mm is their only general zoom with IS that gives the extra stabilization. I really wish they make something at 9 or 10mm with IS that is compact (either a shorter zoom or primes).

    This camera does feel like a step-down from its predecessors in some more weird ways aside from the obvious plasticiness (yes I just made up that word).
    No more flash-sync port, loss of customizable buttons around shutter/front dial, and the new grip (ECG-5) is no longer compatible with HLD-6P, nor does the grip feature the headphone jack seen on HLD-8G for E-M5 II.
    It seems Olympus wants to make the 5 line into a smooth transition between the 1 and 10 lines. This does streamline the overall product catalog, but omitted some quirky (and welcomed) characteristics that makes the 5 line unique.

    Using a pro lens makes it similar in size (and price) to a full frame from, say, Sony. If size was not an issue, would you pick m4/3 or ff? m43 will get you longer zoom but ff gets you a bigger sensor and (my guess) a better low light performance, maybe a better dynamic range if you can use it. I'm still using APS-C camera from Sony and wanted to go either the smaller camera route (m43) or larger camera because they have better zoom lens selection compared to my non-stabilized A6000 (can't do a handheld shot at 1/10th of a second without getting blurred picture, and using a short shutter with high iso results in a crapton of noise).
    Maybe I should just stick to smartphones, I'm not a pro and pictures are for family album only...

    I don't have an issue with plastic if it's used in the right places. I agree it doesn't "feel" as nice but when used correctly it can be a great way to save weight. That being said, the camera should cost less than it does. I'm an EM5Mkii owner and if I were to upgrade I would get an Em-1Mkii.

    You guys are a bit harsh on this camera. I think it's a nice offering because all of the other brands leave out or mess up some feature and ask you to compromise, while this has a side flippy screen, phase detect AF, uncropped 4K, IBIS, a small size, weather sealing, and a wide range of quality lenses! For the enthusiast the only missing "feature" (which by far isn't standard in competitors), is a headphone jack. This camera seems to tick more boxes than others in it's class.

I eventually went with the M1 but I still think the M5ii would've been better. It wouldn't be much of a debate now. There is no compelling reason to buy the E-M5iii over the E-M1ii. I'm a fan of the way the EM5 series looks; I can get away with some stealthy street photography and hide the camera in my coat pocket when needed. It's almost a fashion accessory. The PDAF is something I'm keen on, as is the rock solid IBIS, but otherwise it feels like it brings not a whole lot. I'm indifferent to weight; though the size matters to me. MFT has few advantages over full-frame so I feel like it needs to exploit what benefits it does have.

    Although I like the sensor-processor-af upgrades as well as the overall features that make this camera quite complete, in this regard it is no better than latest releases from Canon, Sony, Fuji and Nikon. I say that with a little disappointment because M43 used to be an innovative system at this price range. Right now many aps-c models have caught up in features/size and price/feature ratios. It's a too long topic for a comment of course, but my point is that IMO such M43 bodies are mainly worth if you want a compact system (I mean you should own more lenses than kit zoom to really appreciate the size factor). Which for many is a very good reason. Like it is for me. The other point is the price, a little high. Adding very little puts it in competition with very capable cameras.
    Overall I like it a lot, don't get me wrong. My fear is that it doesn't take much to make it look average if a direct competitor will feature 4k 60fps or a new high performance sensor or whatever technological advance one may think. My wish is to see Olympus do it first, to innovate.

    • @koolkutz7
      @koolkutz7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Olympus (and others) have hit the buffers for now in terms of tech innovation. Until we see a radical new sensor design such as an organic sensor or maybe RGBW sensor plus global shutters then we are stuck with new releases merely tweaking what already exists.

      @@youknowwho9247 I shoot with an E-M5 Mark II with a 25mm lens (so a 50mm MFT equivalent) and can handheld with an acceptable sharpness up to 2 seconds. I can't even claim to have the steadiest of hands so provided that I can already do that with an older model, I believe 5 seconds is definitely possible when given to the right hands. I've seen some in DPReview forums and even in Robin Wong's older blog entries. Olympus may be lacking in a lot of respects compared to other brands but IBIS is definitely their strongest, and some people like me prioritize that (if not also the small size). Then again, once other companies finally figure out an IBIS implementation that's better or even up to par, then that's likely (and sadly) could be the nail in the coffin for them if they don't keep up with every other else.
