  • After months of speculation, rumour and intrigue, Olympus has finally announced the much-anticipated Olympus OM-D EM5 MkIII - the latest in the beloved EM5 series that broke the mirrorless market mould when the original EM5MkI was first released back in 2012.
    In this preview, newly-minted Olympus Ambassador Jimmy had the privilege of putting the EM5 MkIII through its paces. Does it do justice to the legacy that is the EM5 series? Watch to find out!

    The original E-M5 was my first m43 camera, but every m43 camera I've bought since then has been from Panasonic. This is what I've been waiting for, a compact but well specced camera from Olympus that is a significant upgrade and successor to the E-M5. Just too bad they changed the battery and removed vertical battery grip, I love that feature.

    Very happy the E-M5 mkIII has finally been released! Very good first look video Jimmy, thank you. Things I’m excited about 4K, 120 FPS in 1080p and phase detect AF (to use with my Four Thirds 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 and 150mm f/2.0 lenses). Things not so excited about, battery, same 20 meg sensor as very other MFT camera and Trupic VIII processor. Thought it would have been a brilliant time to into a Trupic IX processor to give it something unique. Looks like an “E-M1 mkII Lite” which IMHO could make it the prefect Vlogging camera.
    BTW- Did you ever do a video on the Olympus DSLR Four Thirds 150mm f/2?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Michael! Wow you have the 150 f/2!!! I haven't done the video yet, I don't have one but would like to source one. In fact, the 20 meg sensor and processor is the 'tweaked' version of the EM1X. It's not exactly the same as the older TruPic VIII as found in EPL-9 or EM1 II. I personally think the reason that no Trupic IX is that if a new processor is employed, it will outperform the 'current' EM1 II on the market and it won't make sense at all for Olympus. So I am guessing the first camera to use Trupic IX will be the new EM1 III in the future and EM1X II. Vlogging camera, yes, it's a great kit to do that due to it's light weight and small size!

    Hi, would you recommend this over E-M1 Mark ii? I'm still thinking about which one to choose. I've been using my Canon 80D in the last 5 years mainly for travel photos and videos, but it's just a bit bulky for travel, so I need a mirrorless camera that's compact with in-body image stabilization and amazing face detect focus. Also, do you know if I can still mount my canon lenses to E-M1 Mark ii and E-M5 Mark iii cameras? Or do I need to get an adapter? Thanks.

    • @adamvaz9097
      @adamvaz9097 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I enjoyed your video. Very helpful. I'm considering getting either the OM5iii or a fugi xpro2 or xs10. I like the Olympus a lot (I have a stylus1 and love it) but wondering if it will be as capable as an apsc for shooting indoors and at dusk?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, if you are comparing the EM5 III to XPro 2 and XS10, the EM5 III has better AF and much better IBIS. But like anything, shooting indoors need a fast lens, so invest in some pro 2.8 or better still 1.8 or 1.2 lenses, that will help drastically. Couple with softwares like DxO PureRAW, you are getting the same if not better results in higher ISO (3200 - 6400). IBIS is much better than either Fuji cameras too and being an EM5, it's light, similar to XS10 and much lighter than XPro 2. Lenses wise, M43 lenses are generally cheaper than Fuji APS-C lenses too.

    This is definitely a compelling new camera from Olympus. My last one was the em5mk2. I had then since switched to Fuji x series for the past several years. But, I am yet again open to the possibilities of a new camera and Olympus is one of my favorites. Perhaps this new one.
    What I'd like to know is how is the buffer? While I really enjoyed the em5mk2, i felt the buffer was noticeably less compared to the em1mk1 I owned before it. Waiting for buffer to catch up was a handicap at times.
    If generational technology does in fact trickle down subsequent model lines, I'm hoping the em5mk3 has improved the buffer to at least as good as the em1mk1, I could live with that. If not, I think I may have to reconsider.
    I have not see it yet, but, like previous em5's, I would assume there will be an accessory vertical grip that adds an extra battery as well as extra buttons and control wheels that attaches to the bottom of the accessory hand grip you showed and mentioned.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The buffer has been improved from Mark II but I don't have the official figure of the buffer size, however, the UHS-II SD card slot is now faster and it means that if you use a fast SD, you can shoot longer or get to shoot quicker. The new grip no longer has a second battery bay and just a trigger shutter button and front dial. The reduced size will mean you can still reach the four-way control from vertical position.

    Looks like a fine improvement to a good camera, although usually the 5 is the camera that brings something new to the table that's put into the 1 afterwards and this one is merely playing catchup with the already existing e-m1 mk 2. Anyway. Did you test the wifi speed ? Until now, my tests of the wifi speed show the wifi module selected by Olympus has been dismal on all the cameras I've had so far (never tried the e-m1 mk 2 nor the e-m1x). Is it better now ? Because a multi seconds image transfer time is simply not acceptable. I almost wrote "anymore", but it never was in the first place, really.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate. It was but the focus has now shifted ever since the 1X is here. Now, the 1X series is going to be the one that showcase new capabilities (perhaps the 1 series, like the forthcoming Mark III) but the EM5 will be the shrunk version of the more powerful pro 1 series. Many forget that reducing size is a huge undertaking for any camera manufacturer. So it's a testament for Olympus to manage to squeeze an EM1 Mark II into the EM5 foot print. Heat management for instance. There's nothing wrong with that and I think the EM5 III is a great camera for the masses finally that's powerful, capable and more importantly fun!

    • @ordinosaurs
      @ordinosaurs 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Red35Photography : certainly. Although I've since noticed a very worrying detail : the pass through connection at the bottom has now only 7 pins instead of 25 on the mk2, meaning there won't be a power grip, nor a headphone jack. Gone also are the b-fn1 and 2 buttons of the portrait grip of the mk2. To me this is a huge deal breaker.

    I like the video quality I get out of my E-M5 MkII, but the AF-C is shyte. One reason I want to upgrade to the MkIII is better AF performance, and of course having the option of 4k. Another thing I didn't like about the MkII was that you could not change any settings with the dials while recording. You COULD do it on the screen, but that's too many steps and tapping on a screen is definitely inferior to a twist of a knob. Basically, I'd like to have ISO controlled by one of the dials, and be able to change it while recording... can the MkIII do that?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      the new PDAF is magic! There's a new ISO button and you can change it if you use manual movie mode. I haven't personally tried changing ISO while recording but will report back later but you can definitely change shutter speed and aperture during recording in manual mode so I suspect you can change ISO also.

    Battery with lower capacity, no audio out, micro usb, no 4K/60, no power bank operation, no joystick, no multi-touch screen, poor EVF resolution. - The Panasonic GH5 is far superior in video and already more than a year old. The Fuji XT-3 is probably the strongest competition on the photo and video side. I understand that Olympus wanted to make that camera light and small but effectively this is now an E-M1 II in a lighter body and some functionality stripped, almost at the same price. - Where is the innovation? They just reused 2-year old technology (sensor, processor, even buttons) from the E-M1 II. - I am an Olympus user and will probably get one sooner or later or wait for an E-M1 II successor with a new processor. However, this is not the model to attract new users when the Fuji XT-3 at the same price is superior in almost every point apart from IBIS.

    Dear Jimmy, may I ask you / suggest a video? Nobody did that on TH-cam and I think there is a Demand for it (just please consider it):
    Video about difference between f/1.4-2.8 when it comes to lenses for TH-cam (the differences in bokeh when it comes to record a video in, for example a room (camera on desk, distance 1,5m to a person) or while vlogging outside (hand distance) and so on :). That is a huge topic among starting youtubers but nobody recorded such thing so far. So you need to be a bit blind when choosing, for example, 24mm f/1.4 or 1.8 or 2.8 (or maybe even 3.6 - you get the point). What do you think? Does it make sense?

    You said best compact m4/3.
    Would you say best compact all-rounder camera overall? Of course, there’s some amazing cameras of similar size on the market now with APS-C and even FF sensor, but they do become bigger with the lenses and often have some drawbacks like poorer IBIS or weather sealing or heavy crop on 4K video. Do you think that as a compact all-rounder this EM5 mkIII is in a league with those cameras?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simple answer - YES. A mirrorless or compact system camera should be small and capable, allowing the enduser to enjoy what they love, capture beautiful photos whenever and wherever they can. EM5 III can do just that, and now, it's a capable video machine with one of the best AF systems on the market in a tiny body. Olympus IBIS is the BEST and I am not saying it but all other reviewers say the same thing for the past 6-7 years.

    • @FabriSlv
      @FabriSlv 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Red35Photography I agree on the IBIS but I did look a bit more in depth at the specifics and the video capabilities look way less interesting now: the bitrate for the slow motion is very very low, and even that for the 1080@60p and 4K@30p are a bit bad, from what I've read. Also it lacks the 4K shot of the Panasonic G9 and some of the features of the EM1 mkII.
      It's still a pretty good camera and probably my next camera, but don't you feel like Olympus could've done more at that price? It's more expensive than a g9 and a a6500!
      It's like it could've been ground-breaking like the mkI and mkII but they decided to "just" do a great new model, and with the limitations on the video side it's less an all rounder than I thought.

      Michael, thanks for the info. But I have to disagree if this is the reason for crippling a great camera with potential. So, just a few small areas of the globe are going to ruin a sought after feature for the rest of the world? The very least common denominator is just not justified in this case. Sony cameras are time unlimited now. How are they doing it? Panasonic has made firmware in the past for different regions to get around this problem. I'm sorry to hear that this crippling excuse persist. If Olympus uses this very common excuse to do another arbitrary crippling, this is another camera that I will have to pass on because of our friends in South Africa. This sounds a little absurd to me. More than likely, they just want to cripple this camera to protect a future camera.

      It's only the top plate that is polycarbonate. It harks back to the old days of the Canon AE-1 when everybody criticised it because it has a polycarbonate body. Well, 40 years later, most cameras do use polycarbonate on the body and nobody complains. Indeed, polycrbonate is as good as metal for some camera body parts, being very strong and impact resistant.

      @@TL-xw6fh I'm under the impression that the whole body is made of plastic. The literature is suspiciously quiet about this issue. Even still, it may be tough, but it is not as tough as metal. I once dropped my plastic Nikon D90, and the body cracked. Now, I'm of the belief that dropping any camera would damage it, metal or not, so the toughness aspect is a bit of a moot point for me. The real difference is the feel. If you pick up a Nikon FM2 and compare it with a Nikon F100, you'll know what I'm talking about. A better example would be to compare the Sony A6000 (plastic) to an A6400 (metal). Not many people would say the A6000 feels as good.

      @@robiulahmed Yes, modern cameras do feel more plasticky. I still love my OM-1, 2 and 4 with the all metal construction (still have them!). However, I'd drop one of them and the prism cracked and I had a dent on the top plate! I guess a metal top plate does not absorb the impact load very well :(

      @@TL-xw6fh Yeah. Ultimately, I don't think any camera likes to be dropped.
