    In this episode of ‘Would I buy this again?’ I talk about the brand new OM System OM-5!

    The added feature of unlimited video record time sold me on this over E-M5 III

      I bought the original OM5 in spring 2013. Really loved that camera and would still be shooting it. Had it not been stolen along with the 17mm 1.8.

    Thank you for such an honest review. I am upgrading from the original OM-D M5 so I am gaining a lot. Disappointed there is not USB-C. Lazy? I don’t know. I love my battery grip so that is also disappointing.

    I like the built in live ND feature for capturing waterfalls etc , and HHHR shot mode would be really nice i think.. do you use this feature much in your landscapes? or just happy with the single shot output most the time? EM5iii seems like a good buy right now at the price, not sure a couple features i want in OM5 is enough to justify it yet.

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  ปีที่แล้ว

      Me, I am happy with the single shot output most of the time, I might sometimes use HHHR (or HR from a tripod) but it’s more for fun/comparison than anything else. As for ND, I’m a bit of a novice in that area - there’s no waterfalls around where I live and not too much other subjects that really invite using it. It’s something I’d love to do more of though. I’m not sure where you are, but looking at the prices here in The Netherlands, I think the difference between an E-M5 mark III and an OM-5 is about 200 euros atm. For that difference I’d pick the OM-5, I feel the internal upgrades easily justify it (for me).

    • @CamMead
      @CamMead ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bartjanverhoef thanks for the reply, seems like the difference here in NZ is a lot more, about 500 euro between the om5 & EM5iii once I did the conversion.

    Did they say the USB charging is new? Surely the E-M5 III had that?
    It has the old menus and they didn't upgrade any of the hardware. It has lots of great features but I don't know, it doesn't give me a feeling of excitement.

    I gotta be honest man, as a user of Olympus/om system, this update gives me 0 confidence in the future of this company and system. The om1 gave me a lot of hope as it seems like a pretty good upgrade. However, the om5 is literally a rebranded mark iii. I can’t believe they didn’t even bother to update to the new menus. I hope I’m wrong as I’ve spent a lot of money on m43 gear, but to me this upgrade is just very lazy. Anyway, love your content and photos man! Continue doing what your doing!

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks Dan! I agree on some of your points. I also wonder why the new menu wasn’t rolled out to the OM-5, it seems weird having different menus in the new models (one thing I love about using different series alongside each other is the seamless experience in that regard). However, I don’t think the OM-5 is just a rebranded mark III - exterior wise yes, but it offers too much inside to dismiss it as just a rebrand imo. Perhaps a comparison to how iPhones are updated is in place: I’d consider it an S upgrade, so if the E-M5 III would be the 14, the OM-5 would be the 14S (rather than the 15), if that makes sense.

    • @g-fotode
      @g-fotode ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I fully agree!
      I left m43 a few years ago and ended up with Sony during the last 3 years for Wildlife. When I heard about the 150-400 I was interested again but I was hesistating due to the spin off and the missing OM-1 at that time. When the OM-1 arrived there was new hope that OMDS is on the right track. It was an improvement in so many ways. Hence I invested into 2 new OM-1, the 150-400 and many more glass, because the bashing stopped and I was confident again.
      Now they presented the E-M5IV or OM-5 how they call it and the same rant starts again and I do not feel comfortable investing >12 kEUR into a company which is just showing that they have no money to create something new to copy the success story of the OM-1.

    • @danprocaccio
      @danprocaccio ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@bartjanverhoef Maybe the photography world just expects too much these days from camera upgrades. I deff think the om5 is a super capable camera and far exceeds anything I would need on a day-to-day basis. It's just the overall perception of the upgrade being really minor. Also, it seems really weird to not at least upgrade the menu system - to me that's the worst thing about it. That sort of decision making worries me for the company. I just want OMDS to stay competitive and to put out good products that people will like because I don't want them to go away!

    • @brucecampbell4485
      @brucecampbell4485 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The EM5iii was an EM1ii in a small body. The OM5 is an EM1iii in a small body. Same upgrade path! They are being consistent. Maybe in 2-3 years time the OM5ii will be an OM1 in a small body.
      But, they should have updated the menu system. Maybe in firmware update - I hope.

    • @danprocaccio
      @danprocaccio ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@brucecampbell4485 but that’s what worries me. they’re using the same upgrade path as the company before who failed and had to sell off the brand. at this point, omds has to nail every camera launch out of the park - they’re already coming from behind. They need to wow people with each release, or, at the very least, instill some sort of confidence in the future of the company. when you don’t include the new menu system in a camera that has your new logo on it, that’s just weird and lazy - it doesn’t instill confidence. Same goes for lack of a usb-c port. I really want them to succeed, but when I see this it sorta worries me. I do not want the death of m43 to actually happen, but I fear it will happen unless omds doesn’t have more stellar releases like the om1.

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve used/researched the camera too little to say anything meaningful about the bottom plate. From what I know and read about the E-M5 mark III and given that I haven’t come across any info that suggests it was improved: I wouldn’t. I’d really want to know more about the construction improvements (if any) before trying.

      @veikop ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bartjanverhoef Hi Bart!
      I found a latest article about om-5 in dpr and this bottomplate is mentioned:
      _The one thing that Olympus shooters want to know about is durability. The E-M5 Mark III got a reputation for being "plasticky," which was only reinforced when a number of cameras had their tripod sockets damaged when in use. Yes, the bottom plate is still plastic on the OM-5, but OMDS says it's been strengthened (while noting that third party accessory compatibility is never guaranteed)_
      So no peakdesign captureclips for om-5 :)

    This camera can be purchased with a 12-45 f3.5 lense, but do you think it would be better to spend more and get the camera with the 12-40 f.28?

    • @bartjanverhoef
      @bartjanverhoef  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You mean to 12-45mm f/4 Pro right? I think it totally depends on what’s important to you. Both are PRO lenses, the 12-45 is slightly smaller than the 12-40, but the 12-40 has the wider aperture. I’d prefer the latter, but if f4 suits your needs there isn’t any point in spending (or carrying) the extra.

    not even bothering to upgrade the USB port to USB-C says a lot about how seriously they are taking this product, and it's not good.
    with the sensor being the same you could maybe make an argument about how the old sensor is still good, etc, but there is no excuse in this world for sticking to USB 2.0 in 2022.
