I am an Olympus Visionary, and the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III was loaned from Olympus Malaysia. My opinion is subjective, and this is a user experience based review.
I have tested the E-M5 Mark III in various shooting conditions, fast paced tennis tournament, night street shooting, insect macro photography and even birding, which I do once in a pink moon.
Special thanks to many friends who helped out with behind the scenes footage:

After four years of extensive use, I have become a dedicated Em5 Mk2 fan and now a dedicated Robin Wong fan. Love your approach Robin. As a 70+ travel photographer I ditched all my heavy Canon gear and get remarkable stills and video from this fun-to-use camera. Just returned from shooting in Georgia and Armenia. Wow! I always shoot with a lightweight tripod and reckon it gives me total control and ultimate clarity. Biggest criticism is the start-up lag, especially shooting in RAW. Has that been improved? I am an Aussie by birth but grew up in Penang through the 50's. Still love Malaysia. Keep up the good work.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Thanks. I don't feel any lag during start up though. Maybe there was that half second or less delay but that was the SSWF cleaning the sensor. And if I am working with anything crucial the camera is on all the time.

    • @langhamp8912
      @langhamp8912 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I used to own the em5.2, and recall the start up time can be almost eliminated by making sure the camera is in single shot sing focus, with quick sleep off. Then, holding the button down when powering on almost instantly results in an in-focus shot.
The Pen F has the same "problem", but again you can get an instanous shot by using the single shot single focus method.
Note that you do have to turn on the camera once to charge the sensor. Once done the sensor stays charged even when off.

Been following your blog for years now and IMHO you're one of the best photographers out there and I do love how you make your reviews, no fanboyism, no click bait, with actual output of how the camera will perform, and less BS! I still think your Pentax 645Z review is one of the best. Hope that you get more TH-cam subscribers because you deserve it.

Dear Robin, I bought the original EM5 after reading your articles. I loved it, and I loved the fact that backpacking in the mountains it was so light and small. I just gave that one to my granddaughter after the EM 5 iii came out, after reading and watching your articles on it. The improvement in dynamic range is significant and was one of the primary reasons for my change. I am quite happy with it, and I appreciate your help in getting both of these properly set up to start!
With the 25mm 1.8 it is almost as portable as my iPhone. Thus, I can carry it with me most of the time. I don’t miss full frame.

    Hi Robin
After having the OM-D-E-M5 mk 3 for a year for every day photography its great. I have the M1 mk 3 as well but it hardly ever goes out. I have paired the M5 mk 3 with the Olympus 12-200 lens and it has enabled me to take great images on long hikes without the weight associated with the M1 mk3 and 12-100. Yes I use the M1 mk3 for indoor work and if I have need for that little extra, but in reality it very rare. I do take the 25mm 1.8 with me if I feel I need the extra sharpness.

I've been using mkii for all of my videos in the past 2 years, never regret upgrading to the mkii whatsoever. This mkiii can be a good upgrade for my kind of work, since it is capable of shooting 120fps in 1080p.

Hi Robin, thanks for a helpful user review and some excellent shutter therapy along the way. When the specs were leaked, like a lot of people I was disappointed that construction would be plastic. However, having got hands-on with the new camera today I can only say that the build quality feels solid and high quality. I'm looking to replace an original EM5 with a small, light camera for street work and paired with the 17mm f1.8 this should do the job very well.

Hi Robin, I made just a test and used the E-M5 Mark III via Elgato Link Cam Link 4k as a webcam - with full risk it stops during the meeting - and, interestingly, the battery worked for 123 minutes! So I was able to use one battery load for 2 hours. Olympus put a 30 minutes restriction on the camera for video recording because if there is more than 30 minutes of continuous video recording the camera is treated by customs import authorities as a video camcorder and they charge higher customs for video recorders than cameras and camera sellers of cameras want usually bypass these higher customs and put these restrictions on video recording. (That it records only 29 minutes is said also in the specifications, as I just learned.)

Thanks for a very thorough review with example photos, much appreciated. Since fw 3 on the E-M1ii, I have been shooting with my E-M1ii, leaving the E-M1X and E-M5ii at home. If the video CAF is good on the E-M5iii, I can live with the small battery, single card slot, no headphone jack, smaller and lghter, just fine! Looking forward to more of your videos in the coming days.

Great review. What do you think of this camera for making hobby travel videos. Not vlogging with me in the view, but street scenes and landscape ? Which wide angle prime or short zoom do you recommend ? I have two good digital mirrorless cameras that take great photos, a Canon and a Fuji but I want to do more video.

On my E-M10 Mark II I used to assign a quick access to manual focus to a Fn button.
I can't do that on my new E-M5 Mark III. The option doesn't appear. Is it possible get that shortcut on this camera?
    Thanks.

Hi there, I was wondering if you might be able to advise me on two cameras.
I really like the Pen E - PL9 and the
OM -DE - M5 Mark 111, however I'm not sure if one really out weighs the other..
I love landscape photography but would like to just have a good allrounda..
The pen is affordable, but is it good enough for landscape as well. Or should I really save for the M5 Mark 111 ?
Really would appreciate your input. Or anyone reading this really lol

The EM5 III is not a mini EM1 II, I´m happy to own both cameras but I´m glad about the fact that the EM 5 III has the panorama function. When I hold lectures a panorama view with animation makes a lecture more livebel. And the EM 5 III is so light and it fits perfect in my bicycle bar handle bag.
Robin thank you for your enthusiastic viedeos!!!

Does it? The EM10 Mk IV has continuous panorama photo but I've heard this EM5 Mk iii does not. Or do you mean a different kind of panorama?

Thanks for this, seems like a possible alternative to my plans of maybe getting an E-M1 MK2 at some point.
Do you know if the STF-8 is fully supported on this camera (including focus stacking (which doesn't work with the MK2) and focus bracketing (which is supposed to work with the mk2)).

I have not had the chance to test the STF-8, so I don't have any info on that. Lemme see if I can check for any available info.

Hi, it's been 3 years since this camera release. Question about this camera handling, yes Robin does show this camera paired with 300m F4 Pro. But I,m wondering how is this camera hold with 12-40mm Pro with an example Godox V1 flash? Would this combo still be comfortable or just get EM1ii. My main usage would be street and travel but occasionally I would be the photographer for my office's event.
Any opinion is so much appreciated. Thanks.

I felt e-m5 iii accumulates heating around the grip which wasn't found in E-M5 original, guess it is due to replaced metal body to plastic.... Happy with the performance but heating makes my hand quite uncomfortable...

A comprehensive review, Robin - always love your perspective. Don’t heed the haters! I have the E-M5.2 and upgraded later to E-M1.2 due to AF system (for wildlife), body size for larger lenses and more dedicated buttons (amongst others). The E-M5.2 is a great camera, but it looks like the M5.3 is the camera it should have been, addressing all of my issues with the M5.2. I see you found a few things not to like, but overall this appears a superb package. Keep up the good work 🤙

Robin Wong so what didn't you like? Battery life is lasting longer on the Em1 mk 2 and "the x", as you said, snd the headphone-jacket and the myset is a feature of the flagships as well. Something else you miss? The camera seems to be so practical to me! Small, lightweight but a powerpackage.

I'm glad they're sticking with their "small size and weight with top features" roots. I think they stand out in a crowded market of "bigger, bigger, bigger". The population around the world is aging and it's those older photographers I'm seeing changing to M43 in various groups and forums I stray into online. M43 is definitely not dead :)
