For some reason I missed this post from you Joseph, your opening comments on light weight portability are spot on. I bought the OMD 5 Mk iii almost as soon as it was launched, and it is now paired with the 12-200mm lens. It is a go any where do any thing combination that you can carry all day with no problem.
A lot of comments were about it being a plastic body, but one has to realize that in modern aircraft and cars a significant portion is plastic, so get real people. I do have the OMD 1 Mk iii which I use for a very few tasks such as when I want to use the Pany 100-400 mm lens with the OMD 5 Mk iii being to light.

I am still getting to grips with my EM-5 Mk lll and found this a very useful and also a very fair review. Several other TH-cam reviews that I have seen have consisted mostly of complaints that it can’t do things that the EM-1 Mk ll or EM-1X can do- well of course it can’t because it costs nowhere near as much. Let’s face it -if you want a Ferrari you have to pay for it!
It is streets ahead of my old Canon DSLR system and is so much easier to carry around and reminds me very much of my old OM4Ti film camera which I still miss even after 20 years.

Excellent video, Joe. I bought an E-M5iii for the improved video function over my E-M5ii, while keeping the small and light form factor. To get a silver body version, I bought a kit which included the inexpensive 14-150 lens and have been pleasantly surprised at how well the little lens works in good light. That lens and body can be carried on a Peak Design belt clip without ever really noticing the weight or size. I walk with mine, on the belt clip, for over an hour per day, stopping only to shoot birds.

I am using the camera since december 2019 and lets go into some notes.
    Grip or no grip?
I dont need it for M5 Mk III with 12-40mm PRO and FL-600R, which is the combination i use the most. It might be needed for 12-100mm F4.0 PRO, almost surely in combination with external flash.
    1. Some notes on SD cards.
    - M5 Mk III supports UHS-II, and up to 300mb/s write speed. This might get expensive, but its worth to get at least one or two such cards - check drive modes. To not spend too much money on this advantage, consider 32gb size. Such card is still compatible with older SDHC limitations (up to 32gb) in case you are forced to use older SD card reader, but can contain up to 1800 RAW files.
    - You can of course use UHS-I card, but you will be limited up to 90mb/s write speed.
    - Even when M5 MkIII can be used as a SD Card reader, the transfers over USB 2.0 wont be above 20mb/s. Also the camera can drain the battery quite fast when connected to a PC over USB. Therefore its worth to have a dedicated UHS-II USB 3.0 SD Card reader.
    2. Drive modes
I am really an old-school photographer, as I was taking photos mostly on film. For example 60FPS vs 30FPS in electronic shutter mode is not much of a difference to me. I have constantly remind myself that I can use drive modes.
In the end M1 MkII and M5 Mk III both manage 10FPS in C-AF mode. M1X and M1 Mk III are better in this regard (up to 18fps), however all mentioned cameras shooting above 15FPS will eventually fill up the buffer due UHS-II limitations, and even when the card actually allows 300mb/s write speed.
For S-AF or MF i would recommend set and use L Drive mode to 3-5 FPS in standard mode, H Drive mode to 15 FPS silent mode - only electronic shutter is used. For C-AF or C-AF Tracking mode up to 10 FPS.
In any case, drive modes can be set to higher values, with mentioned restrictions. On top of that is not good to overuse drive mode on mechanical shutter. Other factors like FPS/IS priority or flash recharge time also do apply.
    3. AF Targeting pad Off
I turn off it as well, while i manage AF points manually. Mostly single point or 3x3 matrix. This setting goes little bit further for me...
    4. Turning off Super control panel, turning on Live Control.
Menu D > Control Settings > PASM> uncheck Live SCP, check Live control.
I prefer this style of control, it also does not support touchscreen. I just press OK, and i can change most important settings displayed in the right column, regardless if using LCD or EVF. It does not have all the settings, but Live SCP is still available throght the "Screen" button. In this mannerI can change settings while using EVF and watching the subject.
    5. Different focusing modes.
I used to attach a button to switch between AF and MF, partially because not every lens I own has MF clutch. Yet the button allowed me to switch from current AF mode to MF and back. Instead i started to use Live control, where i can exactly specify if i want to use S-AF, S-AF+MF, C-AF or Tracking.
    6. On/Off switch and FN Lever.
I switched FN lever to work as On/Off switch. First of all, its a great prank when someone wants to take your camera and take a picture and he cannot figure out how to power it up.
M5 Mk III is perfect when combined with a hand strap (or cuff). Its light enough (even with lenses with 350 grams) so you dont need to put it into camera bag when not used. FN lever as a power switch will allow you to start moving Viewfinder towards your eye, powering on the camera at the same moment, and taking the picture while using one hand.
    7. S-OVF on/off
This is good tip, i will most likely use it as i use the flash for under-exposure as well. Not sure if i place it on exposure comp button (most likely).
    8. Rec View or Preview - Off.
The LCD will then not show preview of a recently taken pictures.
    9. C1 Mode as a quick "silent" mode.
I set this as an M mode with electronic shutter only, no flash, no AF Light, no beeps. This allows me to not disturb and have this as a typical mode switched on the Mode Dial.
What i have yet look into is a possibility to configure Wifi to automatically upload the images to a attached phone/tablet immediatelly after they are taken. I would prefer this even over 2 SD card slots. Also even when Eye-FI is no longer available, there are still similar SD cards around.

Thanks for this video. I have been enjoying your stuff. Quick clarifying question....is there any way to use the touch screen to select phase detect focus points ? I didn’t realize using the touch screen targeting pad only activated contrast detect points. I would imagine the screen would be more helpful for moving subjects than using the up/down/left/right buttons since then are kinda slow to use (at least my experience with em5 mkii)

I am very lucky, this is the third time I have ventured into cameras. 1984, 2013 and 2020. Both 84 and 13 didn't last long.
This time I have a purpose and desire, that being video work for my youtube channel and presentational career I am trying to get into.
For some reason there has been a flurry of brilliant new stuff come out in the last couple of months.
EM5 V3, with the Olympus Workspace software
25mm 1.2 pro (ok that ones a tad older but it works in the rain, im UK) large app and low light,
    Rode Go
Kase K75 filter holder, however I am going for the Kase Magnetic ND filters
And more important a lot of Olympus youtube fans to help.

Great tips, Joseph! I'll be sure to try some of these when I get my E-M5 MKIII. Now you got me thinking about turning off auto review... One thing about sound though: I also dislike most system sounds and I disable those too. But I *do* want the "beep" countdown for self timer shots, so that my subjects know when to 'smile'. I don't suppose the E-M5 MkIII has this capability? Just the blinking light is not enough, as it's often difficult to see the light.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer

I use the WiFi trigger instead of the s of timer as it allows me to guide everyone and take as many frames as I like. If you’ve never tried it you might give it a go.

Always great videos... but I am on a small budget and want to move my E-M1's to newer bodies. My bodies are roughly hitting 20k plus images. Would love your thoughts on getting a E-M5 II. I do mostly portraits or model work. I have 8 plus lenses so I want to stay with Olympus. Thanks!

Thanks Joseph for you thoughts on this camera. One thing you said is that you tethered the camera to your computerI. In the UK the camera has no Tethering to computer in software, which is a disappointment.Hopeful Olympus will correct this in a later update.

Bought a used EMD1 Mii for $300. I couldn’t pul the trigger for an EMD5 Miii for ~$500. As you suggested, this body is in many ways a mini EMD1Mii. It is smaller and lighter than the 1 II. I can’t see any reason to spend more for this body vs. what I already own.
Love the 12-40mm pro lens. It live on the 1 II.

  • @WilliamWallaceRoss
    @WilliamWallaceRoss 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

Purchased this Model used and a custom grip because I have the EM5 MK1. I understand that this is a much lighter camera, like my EM10 MKIV. Yes, too many Olympus Cameras in my arsenal, but, I am having a problem selling my PEN E-P5 and EM1 because no one is shooting with Olympus in my area. Soon, I will do a complete comparison to see which ones I should try to either trade or sell, based on performance.

  • @FTezner
    @FTezner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I have the camera, and it is very capable. It would be even more capable if it worked with the Olympus tethering software, Olympus Capture. The EM5 MKII works with it, but the MKIII doesn't. That's a disappointment, and it is something that Olympus presumably could fix with a firmware update. Olympus needs to do that.

I've had mine for months now and I am not sure if you've noticed when shooting in Adobe colors the colors are cold tinted with a green hue? Also when I shoot in center weighted metering the images are always blown out, with highlights over exposed? I had to exposure shift to the left by half a stop in the menu to correct it.

IMO, with the optional grip, the EM5mk3 should handle similar to the EM1mk3 when using those lenses, for most people. I felt the EM1mk2 still handles those lenses slightly better for me, but it wasn't a big difference.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer
      @JosephEllisPhotographer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think if your primary subjects require the 40-150 or 300 I would probably recommend the EM1.2 or 1x honestly. If you add the handle as suggested already that would also be a solution but I prefer the deeper grip and trigger ergonomics of the EM1MKII for the larger lenses. Just my 2 cents.

I agree with the others that an E-M1 MkII would be vastly superior for those lenses. But with the optional grip for the E-M5 MKIII, it should handle nicely. I have an old E-M5 MkI with the HLD-6 grip and it works great with the 12-40 or 40-150 PRO.

    • @JosephEllisPhotographer

Well my choice between those would be the 12-40, I value the extra stop of light gathering vs the f4 len’s lighter weight. If I was going to go with an f4 lens it would be the 12-100 which I have and love as a single catch all lens.
