The master was the doctors friend in the academy but later on, they were going to reveal he was his brother in the 3rd dr regeneration story.... he was gonna sacrifice himself to save the doctor... sadly however the original master actor (the fabulous Roger delgado) died in a road accident filming a movie abroad and so the plot twist and story never got made.....

The voices coming out of the watch before he opens it are all classic TV lines from previous faces of “The Master”. Those of us who had watched DW from BACK in the day before the Rose reboot were losing our collective shit at this scene.
We suddenly knew who was in that watch and what it meant. It was so well done it gave people who never heard of The Master goosebumps - just imagine.
And Derek Jacobi to boot! Holy crap.

Professor Yana is played by iconic British actor Derek Jacobi. The costume designer wanted him to look like he'd stepped out of the classic series: waistcoat, old-fashioned shirt, pocket-watch... almost like he could have been an incarnation of The Doctor.
The new Master we see at the end is John Simm who was well known at the time for the TV series Life on Mars and 90s clublife movie Human Traffic.

If you listen closely, you'll hear the voice of the original Master, Roger Delgado, in a clip from the 1972 story The Time Monster, when Yana opens the watch. The Master's story would probably have been finished during the 3rd Doctor's era, were it not for Delgado's sudden death. The next time we saw the character, played by Peter Pratt, he was basically a withered corpse, having used up all twelve of his allotted regenerations. The Master's last appearance was in the 1996 TV movie made by Universal, where he took over the body of a San Francisco ambulance driver named Bruce, played by Eric Roberts.

    Couple of bits of Trivia:
Jack stared in a Doctor Who spin-off called Torchwood inbetween Series 2 and 3. It was aimed at an older audience and dealt in more explicit subject matter, though not always in the most mature way IMO. It was spotty quality, though many agree the 3rd Event Series "Children of Earth" was it's peak.
(Likewise, Sarah Jane had her own spin-off series aimed at a younger audience, so they were like the older and younger siblings of the main show.)
The Hand in the Jar was a recurring prop, and the finale episode leads into this one, with Jack scooping up the hand and dashing off when he hears the TARDIS landing.
Also, the little kid who referes to the Sky filled with Diamonds was a contest winner. If you were 8-16 years old, you could send in a video audition with a sample script for a chance of landing the role. I entered myself. Can't speak for my acting ability, but as the old cliche goes, I was definitelly too tall for it.

  • @UserName-vb4lg
    @UserName-vb4lg 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

I always took that line “the stars were made of diamonds” as the way they would describe a star filled sky when they’re at the end of the universe and most of the stars have gone out. It’s a beautiful description on the surface but a heartbreaking one underneath.

Jack unintentionally got long life from Rose when she had taken in the heart of the Tardis. He did not have powers before that.
And the Master is an old adversary from the original series. I don’t think it would be too dramatic to say The Master and the Doctor are archenemies. More complicated than that, but no spoilers, you’ll enjoy the ride, I think

When you said you didn't know the Tardis needed fuel at 2:10. Remember what The Doctor was doing at the start of this episode, parking the Tardis in Cardiff on the rift to fill it up with energy is the same thing the 9th Doctor, Rose and Jack were doing in Series 1 episode 11 'Boomtown', when they parked the Tardis in Cardiff and Mickey met up with them whilst it was filling up. Of course this rift that they're parked on originated from Series 1 episode 3 'The Unquiet Dead' back when they met Charles Dickins and all the ghosts were pouring out of the rift

One of the voices that you hear while Yana is looking at the fob watch when it's tryint to tempt him to open it, is actually the voice of The Master from a previous incarnation from way back in the 3rd Doctor's run. Derek Jacobi is a wildly respected and famous actor over here who leapt at the chance to do Doctor Who, he said it had always been a dream of his to be on dw and one of the big soaps.
Up until S6 there was a show called confidential that showed behind the scenes making ofs for each episode and usually guest actor interviews. Lot of fun for this one. Most of the cast didn't know how Chantho looked so she made a mad run back onto set as she was leaving so everyone would know he face.
Simm the actor you see at the end of the episode said yes to DW because his son was obsessed with it and would never have forgave him had he said no. His kid got to watch his regeneration, what you see at the end of this episode.

Derek Jacobi is an incredible actor on stage & screen & was superb in this, he also has further alternative adventures in audio stories with Big Finish as well.
John Simm plays The Master now & he is also a fine actor really playing this derangemed iconic character. Think Joker meets Sherlocks Moriarty.

Jack running at the Tardis at the beginning of the episode was the last scene at the end of the finale of season one of Torchwood.
Season one of Torchwood takes place after season 2 of Doctor Who, and during Season 3 of Doctor Who.
    You should probably watch Torchwood.
The Master is the Doctor's best friend. They grew up together. They went to the time lord academy together with a Time Lady known as the Rani.
They were all rebels and misfits together.
Even so the Master is the arch nemesis of the Doctor and tried to kill the Doctor multiple times.
The Master had nothing to do with starting the Time War.

P.S. To Rekkai @nupefromdaville : *Maybe* it's them returning from 1969 and maybe not. The show is very open-ended because the BBC may want to add stories to the canon. It's what *we* see, not necessarily what happened. Ten and Martha could have had 50 adventures or more that we will never learn about until somebody writes one, more or all in a novel, comic or Big Finish audio adventure :) Real-life wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey :)
P.P.S. to both: The "blogging" comment is really smart writing because a) blogging was relatively new at the time (there was even a Black blogging organization forming back then!) and b) the BBC had created and was writing a Martha MySpace blog! So Martha *was* blogging at the time!!!

Although I loved Derek Jacobi's brief turn as the Master, John Simm's Master (the new incarnation of The Master) is my favourite Master. His manic energy matches that of David Tennant's 10th doctor. John Simm has described them as being "two sides of the same coin." This combination of these two characters with these actors is peak Doctor Who. The Doctor and The Master have a long history together including classic Who. It goes back to being childhood friends and therefore is a complex relationship. I've heard described as once they were best friends, now they are worst enemies but have never forgotten their past. BTW Capt Jack Harkness was the first Who character who wasn't heterosexual and the first openly pansexual character on any TV show.

Now I know it's my birthday! I am so excited you are at this point in the show, Utopia throws a lot of stuff at us, calls back to a bunch of previous episodes, and leaves us on one hell of a cliffhanger. Starting with "Human Nature", Season 3 is absolute 🔥 The storytelling and acting is some of the best stuff Doctor Who has to offer.
So, I definitely understand Rekkai being frustrated with Martha giving everything away with her reaction to the watch, but I think the blame for that needs to go to the Doctor. Since Martha first met him, she's wanted to get to know him better, to learn about him, his world, and his people. Back in "Gridlock", she asked if they could visit his home planet, with the same sort of energy that Rose had when she asked to go see her father; there isn't any particular time or place that Martha wanted to visit, no personal journey where she tries to make the universe bend to her desires (not to say that Rose was trying to break time in "Father's Day", but rather that learning the Tardis was a time machine was what changed her mind from staying to going, because of the unique possibilities that presented to her), all Martha wants is to get to know the Doctor better, because of her crush on him. And the Doctor does share a little bit about hus planet at the end of that episode...but not likely much more than that. After all, when the Face of Boe tells him "You are not alone" and Martha questions what that means, the Doctor dismisses the notion that there could be other Time Lords around. Likely he didn't tell her about individual Time Lords from his past, or even if he did, he probably focused on the positive rather than the negative, as one is wont to do for those who are gone (such as Jackie painting a more flattering picture of Pete for Rose than was reality). So for Martha, seeing a watch that could mean another disguised Time Lord, she sees the possibility of the Doctor no longer being alone. She doesn't know that this one could end of being a nemesis, someone who shouldn't be made aware of the watch. And at least to her credit, she doesn't just tell him to open it then and there, she does have enough caution to try to pretend it's nothing, to tell the Doctor first. But the possibility that she, Martha, will be able to give this to the Doctor, so to speak, to be the one to tell him, "See? You're reall not as alone as you think you are!" makes it difficult for her to play it casual in that scene, because she is hoping against hope, and she's trying not to jump to conclusions until she's certain, but trying to suppress expectations means that energy will get released somehow. So although in hindsight, when we learn it's The Master, it's clear this is the kind of Time Lord who should have remained dormant, it can be frustrating that Martha got the ball rolling, I can understand why she wasn't able to maintain a poker face in that moment. I think if the Doctor had shared more, had told her the bad of the Time Lords along with the good, she would have been more prepared to be cautious, but because he doesn't share, she was working off the limited information she had, foremost being the solitude and loneliness of the Doctor. You don't go around saying "I'm the last of my people" if you're not missing the sense of belonging that comes from being one of many, of having a home and community of people like yourself.
Speaking of the watch, I think it is something that every Time Lord gets, or at least would use in this particular instance. The fact that it's a watch, which means it helps one keep time, makes it a fitting vessal to keep a Time Lord as well. At least, that's my guess on why a watch specifically, although I wonder if other timepieces would also work. The fact that the pocketwatch can be opened or shut likely makes it a better fit, design wise, than say an hourglass or wristwatch.
Oh, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned before, but showrunner Russell T. Davies also created the series Queer as Folk before he worked on Doctor Who, so there was a conscious choice to include LGBT+ elements when they could, especially with the inclusion of Captain Jack. When they first met him in season 1, the Doctor points out that he's from the 51st century, where attitudes are drastically different from the 21st century. "So many people, so little time." Although I guess Jack has literally all the time in the universe now!
There's a lot more to say about this episode and the show in general. Just gonna leave off that I was so looking forward to your reaction to the YANA reveal and I am so glad you included it here!! The first time I saw this episode, I felt the same way, actual chills that this was something foreshadowed at the beginning of the season. Such a good payoff to that mystery! Looking forward to the next one!

The Master is the third big villain from the classic series, along with the Daleks and Cybermen. He is basically the evil opposite of the Doctor. They are both renegade Time Lords who ran away from Gallifrey. The Doctor has adventures, saves people and fixes things while the Master seeks power and sows chaos.
Professor Yana/The Master is played by British acting legend Sir Derek Jacobi. He mostly does TV and theatre so may be not so well known in the US. The instant change in demeanour when he reverts to the Master is impressive.
Jack basically became immortal when Rose revived him in "The Parting of the Ways". He will revive and heal whenever something fatal happens to him and he now ages very slowly.
Buckle up for the series finale!

7:25 dudes there is a video from the TH-cam channel MelodySheep that shows what scientist think the end of the universe will look like based upon current physics. The video is called "TIMELAPSE OF THE FUTURE: A Journey to the End of Time"
The time the Doctor and the gang are currently visiting is after what the Melodysheep video refers to as "The Age of Starlight". That's where we are now within the Age of Starlight, which if the physics of the video is correct is a very very very small fraction of time within the life of the universe.
Once the last star blinks out it's not the end. The universe just keeps getting older and older, colder and colder and stranger and stranger until it reaches a point where matter as we know can't exist anymore. It's quite mind boggling. Kudos to writers for trying to explore what this could be like.
