Behind the scenes, though. You need to research some of the stuff Christopher Eccleston went through during this. One season in, and the BBC took credit for something they refused to be involved with. Only for Chris to quit, then have lies about him printed everywhere. Even refused to be in the 50th anniversary as it all left a bad taste in his mouth. Chris did so much, but was goven so little. David was handed the silver platter, and they kept giving him more.
If you do want to support Eccleston more though. Look for the Ninth Doctors Adventures by Big Finish Productions.

    Bad wolf explanation:
The company that ran the game station was called bad wolf. There’s nothing special about that. But rose sending the letters from that moment all the way across time and space came full circle and brought her there in the first place. She couldn’t just write something different, because it was already fixed in time that she saw bad wolf in the past and that’s what helped her get there. Confusing, but welcome to doctor who 💀

Syntell and Rekkai: You will soon hear a phrase that everybody in geekdom uses [USING INITIALS AS TO NOT SPOIL :)]--"WW, TW"--and it comes from "Doctor Who." :) So weeks from now, perhaps by the end of the summer, you will use it to explain "Bad Wolf" to yourself :)

It’s basically the “bootstrap paradox”. The only reason to use the words “Bad Wolf” is that those were the words she had seen that led her to that point. But the only reason they were there to begin with was because she’d put them there in the TARDIS empowered state.

Thank you, gentlemen. And I've made a note of "be teachable", that was so aptly put.
It might've been mentioned by someone else (although I couldn't see it when I skimmed through this video's comments), but although regeneration is such a core concept of the show, and has allowed it to evolve and continue over many decades, it wasn't originally part of the show's premise. Sadly the actor who in the mid-1960s played the very first Doctor (William Hartnell) was suffering from increasing ill health after three years in the role. Someone on the production team had a genius moment and thought of a sci-fi solution to a real-world problem.
When you were talking about Hollywood contracts, Patrick Stewart came to mind. I'm sure I've read that the only reason he agreed to sign on for "Star Trek: The Next Generation", which meant a seven-year contract, was because he didn't expect it to last as long as that. British actors just aren't used to signing up for shows for that length of time. And you've probably already realised that our shows typically have shorter seasons, too.
There were a *lot* of production problems behind the scenes during this season. It's a difficult show to make anyway, but it was an especially steep learning curve for a team learning from scratch, and mistakes were definitely made. Christopher Eccleston has only started to give an explanation in public in the last few years, and while he's avoided going in to full detail he's been clear that he felt certain things (especially in the first production block, i.e. episodes 1, 4, and 5) had reached an unprofessional level. He didn't feel his concerns were addressed by the producers, and their working relationship never recovered. There have been rumours of minor cast members being mistreated by a director, and even rumours of safety concerns, but I don't think anyone has ever come out in public to state clearly what happened. Apparently a huge number of reshooting proved necessary, requiring lots of overtime that caused an overspend. To add insult to injury, the BBC then screwed up how Eccleston's leaving was handled, and they made up a completely false quote on his behalf that he ended up threatening legal action over.
Of course nobody knew while they were making Series 1 how successful it would be. In the end everyone's wildest dreams were exceeded, with the show becoming a flagship drama for the BBC. But because they didn't know if there'd be a second season I feel this season has a special flavour to it. Despite all the problems I think most of the people involved in making it must've felt something like "if there's only this season, let's make it the best we can". As it was, the BBC quickly offered the production team a renewal of two further seasons plus two Christmas Day specials. I think it's different in the US, but in the UK a mid-evening TV slot on Christmas Day attracts a large viewership, so the BBC clearly had confidence in their new show, even if they were nervous whether the audience would stick around for this up and coming actor called David Tennant...
Sorry for the long comment, but especially after Syntell mentioned in the previous video about having worked in the industry, I'm hoping at least some of this is of interest. 😀

Yes! You made it!! Welcome to the fan club! Glad to have you.
This episode, this show, is all about what Rose said, about not being a bystander, but doing your part to take part and that's an even more powerful message today. All it takes for evil to prosper, is for good people to do nothing. The wolf is at the door, and too many people sit back and invite the crazy into their lives, they adopt wild theories and believe what powerful people want them to swallow, simply because it is easy and convenient to switch off and tune out and accept you have no impact. But you do. Every day everybody can make small differences. At the very least we can learn to sniff out BS and call it, not fall prey to it. Shake others out of the cult mentality. The cults of personality. Doctor WHO has always been my favorite show, from when I grew up in the 80s to now, because it keeps on being progressive and positive. The Doctor was my hero as a child because he could walk into any situation, see the right and the wrong, and make things better without guns or blowing stuff up (all the time, I mean, yeah, sometimes he does blow stuff up, 😅).
Again, really glad you both are insightful and thoughtful and picking up what the show is layin down. It is refreshing. Too many reactor channels just watch but don't go deep to think about and question what they saw, and it is fun seeing you puzzle it out. That said, re-watch the moment when Rose takes the words and throws them across time. it could have been any words, but Bad Wolf evokes a sense of menace and knowing herself, she knew it was kind of the thing she would notice. Also it is a chicken and egg type thing too. She knows the words she's supposed to throw, because she's already read them! Reminds me of a Doctor WHO book I read where the 7th Doctor brings the Isley Brothers to a 2010 wedding to play and they accidentally hear Summer Breeze before they wrote it. So now did they really write it? Or did Time? Dun Dun Dunnn 😂
Oh and one final thought, you cracked me up with the whole "Hard head makes soft @z" cause that's something my best friend Treena says all the time!

    Great chat, guys.
Bad Wolf is a bootstrap paradox - in as much as its origin is in Rose’s embodiment of the time vortex. It allowed her to scatter breadcrumbs across time and space, so she could return to this point. All the Bad Wolf clues were intended for Rose to become tuned in to the trail, so that at the opportune moment, when she and Micky saw the writing on the ground, the circle was closed, and her destiny was revealed.
Its deep - as Rose brandished the ultimate power so justly, she established too that The Tardis, for the first time - was sentient and had a sense of its own purpose, as a force for good. The scene where she reduced the Dalek fascists to dust provided a fitting ending to the arc.

Fun fact: The Doctor and the Whoniverse exist in Marvel canon.
Marvel used to publish comic stories for Doctor Who, they’ve even drawn a doctor into some panels like in an X-Men comic and the TARDIS across comics. That’s why it’s cool whenever someone compares Bad Wolf to Phoenix.

The "new teeth!" comment works in establishing this is the same character with the same memories. However, for those of us who had grown up with and followed the Doctor through the Classic era from 1963, it was a little jarring; remember that Eccleston was the ninth version so this regeneration was the ninth time he had experienced the physical effects of the process so it shouldn't be a surprise.
Another great performance from Billie Piper.

Had an unexpected 12 hour shift at work today, and the only thing about it that bummed me out was the idea that I would have to wait a few hours more before I could watch this episode, I was looking forward to your reaction that much. And I was not disappointed, this was another fantastic reaction! Love your discussions and insights as always. What Rekkai noticed about the Doctor being us and Rose being the ideal version of us (meaning humanity) 🤯 such a profound observation, I hadn't thought of it like that before!
Regarding Syntell's question about Bad Wolf: I actually interpreted your question to mean "why Bad Wolf?" And the in-universe explanation has been provided by other commenters, how that was the name of the station, therefore those were the words Rose used to guide herself there. But I think there has to be a behind-the-scenes literary meaning behind it, right? These are two words that are scattered like breadcrumbs throughout the season, not just for Rose but for us the viewers. So, why Bad Wolf? I don't actually have an answer, but here are my thoughts as possible explanations.
So "Bad Wolf", for me, conjures up the idea of a fairy tale, like a children's story. The two in particular I think of are Red Riding Hood and The Three Little Pigs. In RRH, the Big Bad Wolf disguises himself as Red's grannie in order to trick the girl and eat her. In TLP, the Big Bad Wolf huffs and puffs until he blows their houses down. In both stories, the wolf is the antagonist. Why would Rose, therefore, have a moniker that associates with villains? Maybe because the Bad Wolf is the antagonist from the view of the Daleks? A warning to them that the Bad Wolf is coming for them. They may think Rose is just a normal human, but underneath, she is the one who will bring about their destruction, lulling their suspicions by appearing like a harmless human, until the moment when she strikes. She is the Bad Wolf who huffs and puffs and blows their entire fleet into dust. Yes, Bad Wolf is the message that leads Rose to that place and point in time, but it's also a threat, a promise, to the Daleks across time and space that something is coming for them, teeth bared.
Anyway, that's my theory (and also that it was a way to throw viewers off course, associating the phrase with a fairy tale antagonist so that they would be surprised that it meant Rose upon the reveal). Dunno if it's right (or logical - I am somewhat tired as of this writing!), but hopefully it make sense!

I'm not sure if you already know this, and it is possible you guys have already taped the next episode: but if it's "no" to both of those, there is a so-called "minisode", between this episode and the Christmas Special, called "Born Again", which can be found right here on TH-cam.
There are more minisodes, especially in later seasons, and they're not all necessary to watch, but I would most definitely recommend watching, and reacting to, Born Again. It makes the transition between the Ninth Doctor and the Tenth Doctor, and the exploration of Regeneration (both in terms of plot as in terms of Character), a lot better and a lot more seamless than if one jumps straight into _The Christmas Invasion_ from _The Parting of the Ways_ .

The Bad Wolf thing is a type of bootstrap paradox. If you go back in time to kill your grandfather, then you’d never have existed, thus no one goes back to kill your grandfather, thus you would be born. It’s a loop, with no real beginning or end. The TARDIS exists outside of time though, and so can then create Bad Wolf as herself. It’s best not to think about it too hard, LOL.
The best part of Doctor Who, which there are many, is the conversations it sparks. Maybe you learn to view a topic in a different way, or whatever. But the best thing is to keep your heart and mind open, and always let yourself grow.

    • @kyrauniversal
      @kyrauniversal 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

That's what I keep saying. The Bad Wolf doesn't mean the "End of the Universe." It means to look out for those who are going to cause it. The TARDIS needed Rose as much as Rose needed the TARDIS to help her.
To look at things from the TARDIS' perspective is tragic, but quite telling as to how equally war-torn she is. She IS The Doctor's Wife.

Remember what the Doctor said to the lone Dalek in Van Statten’s vault when he said about his involvement in the demise of both the Time Lords and the Daleks in the Time War? “I was there! I saw it happen! I made it happen!” No spoilers, but this gets brought up again in a certain story in a future season, and once you see it, you will look back to this episode and understand why the Doctor didn’t go through with using the Delta Wave!

I really liked bad wolf for Rose. There's a strange horror that the Doctor committed genocide to end the time war. For Rose it's not even a question and in a way it's justice. Since Rose is human and generally doesn't have the powers of the time lords or the daleks, in a sense when she commits genocide it's actually self-defense for humanity. It is just but it's bad because genocide is always bad.
That said the bad wolf reference comes up in later seasons and I think it ultimately makes sense.
I kinda also think about how wolves live in packs and what would be a bad wolf? Rose puts the Doctor ahead of her mom and Mickey (her pack) to venture out... There's a selfishness in that.
I also like to think about the TARDIS because I think it has opinions of its own. It saved that slavine lady. It agreed they needed to help the Doctor. I feel like the TARDIS is often this character who we don't know but who cares and responds to appeals. The TARDIS is good and it wants to help. It is more powerful than just about all beings in existence but it never tries to use that power to dominate others. It is able to understand so many perspectives.
Anyway I think Rose had to leave herself a lot of messages to get herself to go back for the Doctor. She had to make a huge chalk representation to get herself to actually notice. So she scatters the words everywhere just to get her own attention lol.
Anyway I love your deep takes on everything it's great. You really delve into the meaning of everything and you are both wise, wiser than me.
PS I'm not an old dr who fan... The season you are watching was my first real exposure to this show though I saw a couple episodes as a kid on PBS when the TV reception worked and that probably started my interest. Welcome to your first regeneration and yep just like that :), when a Time Lord's old body wears out, dies or gets fatally injured beyond repair they regenerate and becomes new, we've had 8 different Doctors previously so Eccleston was the Ninth incarnation and David Tennant is the Tenth incarnation of the Doctor, the idea of regeneration originated in 1966 when the First Doctor actor William Hartnell was too ill to continue the role.
As for the Bad Wolf stuff to explain it's an entity that Rose Tyler briefly became after staring into the heart of the Doctor's TARDIS and directly into the Time Vortex, the Bad Wolf scattered her name throughout time as a sign to herself that she was linked to the Ninth Doctor, creating a looped ontological paradox after surrendering her powers as the Bad Wolf, all Rose could remember was "singing" in her head, Indeed, by one account, musicians were able to call down the power of the Bad Wolf across time by playing that ethereal piece of music.
This is also the Emperor Daleks second appearance or reintroduction if you will since 1967.
It was ashame Lynda was killed off it's controversial I know but I personally would had preferred her to Rose as the ideal companion.

I think your idea is great that Bad Wolf is like Phoenix/Dark Phoenix (the Phoenix Force retcon, not the original): Rose and the immense power of the time vortex that the TARDIS uses merge and "she creates herself" as Bad Wolf.
It's a paradox, she's seen these words 'bad wolf' following her on her travels and then scatters the words across time for herself to see as a message that she can get back to the Bad Wolf space station. I think it's supposed to be a bit of a mind-bender.
I've always wondered if she changed the name of the station from Satellite 5 to Bad Wolf as part of that message or she chose the message Bad Wolf because that was the name of the space station? Mind bender.
My opinion is that they've kept it a bit vague what 'Bad Wolf' is and how much of it is Rose and how much is something powerful universal force, because the Bad Wolf destroys the entire remaining dalek race and thus commits genocide (much like Dark Phoenix did with the D'bari... that's why the Phoenix Force was created as a retcon, otherwise Jean Grey committed genocide).
