The scene at the end is a remembrance service, which are held on the second Sunday in November, known as Remembrance Sunday.
The poppies symbolise those who gave their lives in service for the country and are sold every year, with the proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.
The poem the vicar is reading is the third verse from a poem called ‘For the fallen’ though it’s more traditional for the fourth verse to be read out at services all over the U.K.
“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
    We will remember them.”
At 11.00 on Remembrance Sunday it is usual for the majority of the country to fall silent for two minutes.
The two young men likely ended up serving together in a Pals battalion. To encourage volunteers the Army allowed people to join en-masse on the understanding they would stay together. It was not unusual for former pupils, workmates, sometime villages to join together as a pals battalion. The unfortunate consequence was that in a single action an entire community could lose all of their serving menfolk, and many towns and villages through the U.K. have memorials to those that were killed.

@@HuntingViolets yes, it was called Armistice Day . In the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand and many Commonwealth countries the name was changed to Remembrance Day after WWII. 11 am commemorates the time the peace treaty was signed in Versailles. Throughout these countries, the same traditions exist of gathering at the war memorials to host a service to remember the war dead. Like the UK, these countries entered the war as soon as Britain did so losses we very high (and people often enlisted with their friends and neighbours). My husband's grandfather just barely survived . He lost his leg at Vimy Ridge, lay for hours wounded in No Man Land until he was found by the stretch bearers. Parts of his leg had to be amputated several times due to gangrene (no antibotics then). There is a statue of him in local museum to commemorate all the wounded men (he did live until his 80s although he was unable to return to farming due to his disability) .

He is currently nominated for a television BAFTA for Best Male Actor in a Leading Role in a Comedy for _Good Omens._ (Please react to _Good Omens.)_
He did win a Welsh BAFTA for _Doctor Who_ in 2007 (which is this season, I think) and a Scottish one for _The Escape Artist_ but was never nominated for a the regular BAFTA before the _Good Omens_ nomination.

One little touch that I love about this episode is that you can tell john smiths feelings for Joan are still in there and that's why the doctor asks here to travel with him. The doctor would never know if he actually liked Joan or if it was johns feelings and Joan would never know if she liked the doctor or if it was just because he looked like john. You can see she was tempted and she had to find a reason to be angry with the doctor to refuse to go with him that's why she asked him if anyone would've died if he never came, great acting.

The Fury of the time lord is something to behold.
Curious if you understand the significance of the red poppy they wear at the end? I've noticed a lot of Americans seem confused by it usually.
There was another comedy series in the 80s and 90s called Blackadder, each series and special was based in a different time period but featured mostly the same actors playing similar roles as it followed their DNA through the ages when it resurfaces. It also meant you could watch the series in any order without having watched the previous one.
The last series though Blackadder goes Forth was set during world war 1 following a Captain on the front lines and his squad concocting schemes to avoid going over the top which was practically a death sentence at the time. The final scene of that series accidentally became one of the greatest scenes in British TV history in its tribute to the fallen of that war. Unfortunately some Americans who see that scene becomes confused why because they don't understand the significance of Poppy's.

The way nurse Redfearn fell for John Smith was beautiful and the “death” was heartbreaking. The interplay between them both was outstanding. The way Tennant flipped from John Smith to the Doctor in the scene in the spaceship was also outstanding, literally like it was 2 completely different people. Now that’s acting. Freema was also fantastic, showing empathy in the face of the racial abuse she received , demonstrating that the character understood that in this time that was acceptable behaviour and an appreciation of the horrors the children would soon face during WWI.
Superb characterisation of John Smith and Nurse Redfearn and a great supporting cast including the great performance of Harry Lloyd as Baines. For me, it’s hard to imagine that they don’t have it in America as I grew up with it but if you didn’t already know the ending scene was set around remembrance Sunday/Armistice day a real event on the 11th day of the 11th month in the UK where we take two minutes silence (one for each world war) and remember our fallen soldiers. Lest we forget

It was understandable but at the same time disappointed Joan turned down the invitation to travel with the Doctor as a companion as i feel they missed a trick having a companion who is not from the modern day and i thought having a nurse companion from pre-World War I would had been a nice experimental thing to see her reaction to alien planets or the modern world of today it would be a huge culture shock for her i know there's Martha but there's no reason why the Doctor couldn't have two companions.

Yes the Doctor did go to Asgard as well.
Few people realise this, Doctor Who Comics in the 1980s was published by Marvel UK, which placed the Doctor Who Omniverse in Earth 5556 of the Marvel Multiverse.
In the comics the Doctor Teamed up with Earth 616 Fantastic Four to defeat Death's Head.
The Doctor also travelled to other universes in the Multiverse.

Thing that always confused me about this story is how did the Doctor get the god-like powers to do the things he did to The Family of Blood? Could he do that all along? If so, why didn't he do it right from the start and not need to become John Smith at all?
Why hasn't he done this to any of his other foes? Why hasn't he trapped the Daleks in a mirror for all time?
The more nonsensical parts of the plot do not dim the shining performances from the leads and guest cast. Hynes delivery of "on a whim" is devastating.

Yes. It is hard for Martha, and I've read/seen so many essays about these two episodes from Black viewers that make me feel even more mixed than I was already. Some different viewpoints here, though. I really didn't like the romance in this, and then Ten asking Joan to come (yeah, I'd like a companion from a different time, but still). It was wild that he'd discussed it with Martha ahead of asking (I would have liked to see what that was like -- and yet they hadn't discussed Martha's love declaration till after) and that Martha even offers to try to convince Joan to change her mind. I fee that if she would have come, it would have been more about Joan learning not to be racist and other things, and Martha would have gotten less screen time and care from the show, which I would not have liked.
