    One thing I really noticed on rewatch here is that Donna’s mum comes across as this really tough domineering figure but once the world goes to hell she’s the FIRST to give up while Donna and Wilf try to remain hopeful. Donna not listening to her Mum putting her down that one time saved the world, who knew 🤷🏼‍♂️

    Oh the end of the episode gives me *chills* specifically right at the end where The Doctor is asking Donna 'what did she say', leading into the Bad Wolf reveal.
    Wilf's line about "Labour camps, that's what they called them last time." is just a gut punch.

    The beetle is said to be part of the Trickster's brigade. The Trickster was recently namechecked as being part of the same pantheon that Maestro and Sutekh belong to and originally a recurring villain in the spin-off series The Sarah Jane Adventures which was aimed at younger audiences.

  • @MJE-riffs

    Rose possessed by heart of TARDIS is the Bad Wolf. She creates herself. She spreads the words throughout time and space as a message to herself. I think it is cool and makes sense that Bad Wolf would exist in the points in their stream beyond the Eccleston “Parting of the Ways” episode.

    • @Persewna4
      @Persewna4 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Yes, I love the idea that Rose as the Bad Wolf, having all of time and space in her head, saw those moments agead and placed the signs there, knowing the Doctor, in the context of his personal timeline, woukd understand the message. Rose looking after her Doctor throughout time and space

    Donna's dad Geoff Noble was played by Howard Attfield in The Runaway Bride and it was originally planned for him to return in this season, he even filmed the allotment scenes for Partners In Crime. However he was terminally ill and sadly passed early into production of the season. RTD recast British comedy legend Bernard Cribbins as Donna's grandfather (I don't remember if this was the plan when he appeared in Voyage of the Damned but I don't think so).
    There are a few slight references to Sylvia (Jacqueline King) and Donna being recently bereaved, but this episode really tracks Sylvia's descent into utter hopeless grief, despair and depression. She's probably the harshest of the 'companion mums' so far, but this episode really made me feel for her.

    • @Look_Over_There
      @Look_Over_There 18 วันที่ผ่านมา +7

      @@OldManFerdiad I feel like there’s a generational trauma situation going on with Sylvia. She’s very insecure and she takes it out on Donna, in the runaway bride Donna acts very much like Sylvia until she meets the doctor and Wilf moves in. It makes my think Sylvia probably had a mother just like she is to Donna or worse.

    • @OldManFerdiad
      @OldManFerdiad 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      @@Look_Over_There totally agree. I do genuinely think Sylvia loves her family, but maybe hasn't learned how to express that. She does worry about Donna, but it expresses as nagging and criticism.

    • @notallwhowanderarelost4797
      @notallwhowanderarelost4797 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@OldManFerdiad You’re right, it was not their plan when he appeared in Voyage of the Damned, but fortunately they were able to just make him the same character instead of an identical cousin or whatever. The character even had a different name, but since we didn’t learn his name in the episode it didn’t matter.

    • @Persewna4
      @Persewna4 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@notallwhowanderarelost4797 I love that they did incorporate that into the narrative, even making it a point here when the Doctor notes that he met Donna, then Wilf, then Donna again, like he couldn't quite escape her social orbit.

    In seasons 3 & 4, they dealt with the tight filming schedule by giving us “Love and Monsters” & “Blink” where neither the doc nor the companion was utilized. Going forward they started splitting them up- giving us both a companion lite episode (ie “Midnight”) and a doctor lite episode (like this one).
    “There’s something on your back” has been coming up since the Pompei episode.

    A big part of Brexit was based on rhetoric around immigration and racism, so you shouldn't feel bad in making that link. But, there were lots of over factors, such as David Cameron's government cutting a huge amount of public spending and making people lives feel measurably worse, and people rejecting the government's position of remain in the referendum as protest. Euro-scepticism has been a big part of UK media discourse for decades, mainly pushed by secretly funded right wing lobby groups based on Tufton Street in Westminster, such as the Institute of Economic Affairs. There's also an argument that the online rhetoric was amplified by Russia in order to weaken the UK and EU.

    So.... a couple of things:
    1.) Donna is a different kind of companion because in the first time in a long time, she is the first one that is there for the journey and the friendship and she has become the Doctor's best friend because she doesnt demand anything from him. Especially, if you remember at the end of "Midnight", after the Doctor survived the tram ride, she was there and gave him all he needed: a hug and an ear.
    2.) Bad Wolf - We found out who and what Bad Wolf was at the end of Season 1. Rose is the Bad Wolf.

    Ive been thinking about this episode a lot since the devils chord. "what are you" very similar to this episode at the end. and how 73 yards is kind similar to this story as a what if... ok whoever rose was had everyone shook..... i have to think the original plan for Ruby was that she was Sutekh... how else could we explain everyone being so terrified? so now my head canon is RTD initially planned Ruby to be Sutekh but Millie was so likeable and adorable that we just couldnt pull the trigger on that one so they re-wrote that part of the story and gave us a lack luster ending to the Ruby Sunday mystery and equally a weak end to Sutekh himself.

      is it even though? was just thinking about 73 yards today and its pissing me off even more lol. its so BAD!!!!! like i thought it was decent.. until the Ruby reveal ruined it. Ive heard people say the lack of explanation at the end of 73 yards is what makes it work. but we find out in the end the old woman scaring the ever living CRAP out of people.... its just older Ruby making people petrified of her. Basically torturing ruby her whole life by making everyone she ever gets close to, even her own mother, even kate.... abandon her.. and what could she have possibly said that was so bad that it scared everyone? that her mom disowned her? "shes ordinary" or "shes been traveling with the Egyptian god of death who will bring about the end of all life" either way none of that would make your mom abandon you like that..... this episode does a much better job of showing how an ordinary person can make a difference. one simple choice. dont meet the doctor, the doctor dies because you werent there to help him snap out of a moment of anger and rage, everything changes

      73 yeards is nothing like turn left, dont sully turn left. Turn was cleverly doen and thought out. 73 yards was so full on inconsistencies and lazy writing with no real point.

      @@SoTOreo if you spent maybe a moment to think about the episode instead of criticizing it based only on the face value, you'd realize why everyone reacted to the old woman like they did. The old woman Ruby and young Ruby are creating, entangled in, and the result of a paradox. I'd imagine that coming face to face with the very center of a paradox would be too much for the human mind to handle. I'd also imagine that a paradox is fragile, and needs to defend it's stability. Ergo, an inexplicable but overwhelming urge to _get the hell away from her._

    If Midnight is my favorite episode, then Turn Left is my next favorite. David Tennant and Catherine Tate give such great dramatic performances in their respective episode. I think this episode is a favorite-upon-rewatch type of episode, knowing what it leads into, and getting this insight into Donna's life in a unique and revealing way. It's like "Father's Day" for Rose, where the Companion's family takes a key role, and in seeing them with their families, we understand the self that they tend to hide. Rose reveals how much her lack of a father weighed on her, to the point of creating a paradox just to get a chance to grow up with one. Turn Left shows that, beneath the moxy and shouting, is a woman who doesn't believe she's special, who has been beaten down by that thought that the only way to silence it is to be loud and seemingly self-centered. The scene where Donna asks her mum if she's always been disappointed in her and Sylvia mumbles "yeah..." always makes me tear up. No wonder Donna wants to travel with the Doctor, because when they're running, she doesn't have time to doubt herself.
    Oh, also Bad Wolf was season 1, Torchwood season 2, season 3 had the Harold Saxon hints, and season 4 was Rose. That scene at the end of the episode always gets me, it's such a gut punch for the Doctor that Rose might be back.
    Cannot wait for the last episodes of this season. I think you're going to enjoy it!

    Brexit was a complicated thing. I'm coming at it from the angle of being very pro Europe and having voted against it (to be clear upfront).
    It was campaigned for for a long time by people who are effectively the modern successors to the BUF (British Union of Fascists) and the National Front - anti immigration, racist, anti-unionisation, anti-welfare, anti-NHS, etc (if you compare policies across the decades, they're nearly identical).
    And there was a big tax change - the EU plan was to make overseas tax havens for rich Europeans a thing of the past. Those who campaigned most strongly against the EU were very rich.
    And there was a whole manipulation of social media by web bots and overseas actors (this is still going on - it happened before the election last week, they were everywhere, pushing the same people). Plus an organisation called 'Cambridge Analytica' that used social media data illegally. The leave campaign was also funded by some very powerful world actors - US billionaires, Putin, etc (the fully unredacted report into all of this has yet to be released, but that the interference happened has been proved pretty much beyond doubt).
    At the same time, David Cameron, (PM 2010-2015) imposed 'austerity' to deal with the residue of the 2008 crash. He failed. Because of his policies, services were cut drastically, and the economy got worse. So people felt pushed to the limit, particularly in working class areas - services went down, taxes went up, they slashed NHS spending so waiting lists got longer, they reformed the welfare system so people had to wait 6 weeks to get help (or to take out a loan you can't afford), and if you lose your job and have a mortgage you get nothing for housing - same time, social housing was sold off and not replaced, and rules for landlords relaxed, so rents sky-rocketed while conditions plummeted. And that created perfect ground for the right to blame it all on immigrants - and Muslims. It fostered feeling that had been on the decline till then. And it all came bubbling back up.
    It hasn't really gone away. If anything its got worse - the irony of Brexit is that the EU funding for deprived areas was cut completely, and never replaced. So things have got worse for those who really can't afford it to get worse, and immigration gets the blame again (the stop the boats thing, dehumanising the refugees and blaming the individuals instead of the trafficking gangs really to blame).
    But the left and centre banded together to get rid of the right - for now at least. So hopefully things will slowly improve for a while. And they're already talking to the EU like adults, rather than disdainful children. So fingers crossed...
    (Sorry, longer than I intended it to be - like I said, complicated. But in essence you were right.)

    On Brexit, you sort of are right in that, during the campaign a huge proportion of it was about immigration. The Pro-Brexit side essentially twisted the truth and lied to the public.

    What I always liked about RTD is that he made a cohesive universe that kept building for 4 seasons, even without the spin offs he would still build upon previous seasons. Even here there's a mention of the Trickster aka "god of traps" in the new Ncuti era (and a great SJA villain, that NEEDS to come back) So despite current criticism of "wokeness" and stuff, I hope season 14 is just the start of that again and future seasons get bigger. You couldn't do this episode or the finale to season 4 as a stand-alone thing and I feel that and the Tennant-Tate duo is why most feel season 4 is near perfect.
