To add to what you said, I think S5 Episode 12: The Pandorica Opens, S9 Episode 11: Heaven Sent and S10 Episode 11: The World Enough and Time are also among the best cliffhangers especially the former and the latter DW have done. S9s I would say is one of the most hopeless I’ve seen the doctor and is regarded as one of the best episodes made in television

I don't think it is really true that Martha was hated, just that people were still reeling from losing Rose. The same thing happens whenever the Doctor regenerates - most people hate the new one at first until they get used to him, then they just get over it.

    • @HuntingViolets
      @HuntingViolets 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

There are people who still hate Martha -- I run into them online sometimes. And it's a rare comment section where someone doesn't rip on her, even if they wouldn't say they hate her. "I just don't care for Martha" - "Martha is my least favorite companion" - and so on. Freema Agyeman has also talked about racism she's experienced from the fandom. There is a series of posts on Tumblr about racism in the fandom towards Martha. It's a rare comment section on her episodes that doesn't contain some petty nitpick on her. Martha is to me the best and people are appreciating her more these days, and I'm happy for that, but there are still some people who dislike her and a lot of it is racism. Because Martha is amazing and she deserves all the love.

I like how you called them little upgraded Daleks because originally the BBC couldn’t get an agreement with the Terry nation estate (the original designer) to use the Daleks image in the new series so they came up with a toclafane in place of the episode “Dalek” was probably gonna be used as a stand in. But of course he got sorted out so the spheres got used later.

Of course it’s why the Daleks appear so much, the contract they have says they need to every season in some capacity, even if they aren’t big bads for the finale stuff, they just gotta be there.

Like David Tennant, John Simm is a really wonderful stage actor too. I've seen him in Hamlet and Elling and he was fabulous. There's a terrific TV thriller mini series from 2003 called State of Play, in which he's one of the leads, and it's something I rewatch every few years because it's so so good - only 6 episodes and worth checking out if you see it streaming anywhere! The last few years he's had his own detective show called Grace, which has been pretty successful and I think the fourth season is later this year. And then there's a pair of shows from around 15 years ago called Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes, which I can say nothing about that isn't spoilery other than - definitely worth checking out!

Sure, this episode predates the Avengers movie by nearly 5 years... but flying aircraft carriers have been prominent in sci-fi for a while. The SHIELD Helicarrier first appeared in Marvel comics in 1965, and the British sci-fi show _Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons_ had the SPECTRUM Cloudbase (a similar design) back in 1967.
A lot of these things have existed in parallel for a long time - Doctor Who started in the same year as the first Avengers comics.

28:00 actually, Kristen Ritter is so the opposite of Jessica irl, this take caught me off guard a bit. I know a lot of action/super hero actors end up playing a fantasy, high morale version of their real life personalities, but Kristen is like a stereotypical valley girl in actuality… bubbly, high pitched voice, def not the alcoholic doom and gloom emo investigative journalist she is in the series😅 Not to take from Tennant’s performance as indeed a great villain is an essential, but the villain wouldn’t hit so hard if we didn’t care for the protagonist in the first place!

Soon after it finished, John Simm was chosen to play the Master. BTW Like many British actors, John Simm sometimes gets lead roles, in British shows but not in American ones, He also does a lot of theatre...he's not a "bit player" in the UK. Okay. Let's try this again, shall we?
At the end of this season/Series (right after the finale), there is a so-called "Minisode", like there was after the Series 1 finale.
This one is 8 minutes long, is called "Time Crash", and is well worth watching. It can be found under this TH-cam "watch code" (the bit after watch?v= in a TH-cam URL): 4I76p1cZbq4 (can't post direct links to TH-cam comments). That is, if you don't mind watching it in 240p, although I suspect that was the original quality when it first aired.
The Christmas Special, on the other hand, is called "Voyage of the Damned", and is 72 minutes long.
As such, the Christmas Special and the Minisode are NOT the same thing.
The Minisode goes before the Christmas Special, right after the Series 3 finale. I really do hope you guys watch it, as (in my opinion at least) it is brilliant.

a lot of stuff about the doctor and his past, the show has purposefully only hinted at over the years-what's the show’s title again? but his name is an interesting one.
though more recently it's been suggested the doctor chose his name way back, back in the classic series the show played it for years that even the name we do have for him was all a misunderstanding that he just rolled with.
in the very first story, the doctor's new companions-to-be mistook who the doctor actually was-but then lacking anything better to call him, just went right on using "the doctor" up until they left. but before they went, they introduced him by name to the next companion, and so on.
all through the original black-and-white era, the writing is very deliberate so that people who know him just introduce "the doctor" into new situations, without his usually needing to say anything about who he is. in the rare occasion he identifies himself, he says something like "they typically call me 'the doctor.'"
it's not until deep in the second doctor's era that we ever in so many words see him say "i am the doctor," and unambiguously self-identify by the name everyone had been assigning him for like five seasons already.
it was like, "all right, everyone keeps telling me i'm this 'doctor' person and they keep assigning me all these attributes that they think 'the doctor' has-so why not just embrace it? okay, fine, i'll be the doctor then; from the way you describe him, he sounds like someone worth being."
i mean, it's subtle-but if you watch closely, the writers really went out of their way for years, across several production teams, to keep up this thing of, "no, people just keep calling him 'doctor,' but we don't really know anything about who this guy is beyond what people accidentally project onto him." like, the character was a total enigma even in dialogue almost until the show moved to color.
again, it's still... vague, but these days the implications go a slightly different direction, with the doctor having chosen their name well before leaving home. even then, the show barely does more than suggest that, so a definite statement could just as easily swing things back the other way and put us back with him shrugging and eventually just leaning into this persona that had been sculpted for him.

I am so glad you're enjoying these episodes ao much, the hype for the second half of season 3 is well-deserved, the storytelling and acting just does not slow down!
I absolutely agree, the Master is a superb villain, and a really good choice for the Season 3 finale story. We needed a villain who would make things personal for the Doctor. Season 1 has the iconic Daleks, who are indeed threatening and scary, with their one-track drive to exterminate all other life in the universe. And season 2 upped the ante by adding Cybermen to the mix. But if season 3 was just the Toclafane, it would start to feel boring, have an enormous arm of metal monsters terrorizing humanity again. But with the Master, he is specifically doing this to mess with the Doctor, messing with his Tardis, targetting his companion and her family, and rubbing the Doctor's face in his failure to protect the planet. The fact that the villain is another Time Lord is another aspect that twists the knife for the Doctor; finally he's not the last of his kind...but at such a cost.
Cannot wait for the next episode! The next episode is the one that truly cements Martha as my favorite Companion, she's brilliant throughout but as Rekkai noted, right now everything comes down to Martha... I feel like the two-parter of Hunan Nature/Family of Blood serves as a bit of foreshadowing for this story, that Martha finds herself on her own again, the Doctor needing to rely on her to save the day.

Btw she can’t realistically go back in time and change it, it will create a paradox(preventing the things that causes you to go back) especially since this is likely a fixed point

You're selling John Simm VERY short. Simm is one of the UK's finest actors and has had many starring roles over the last 30 years. But not that many genre shows, so you may not have had much exposure to him.
