After the tragic romance of Rose, and the unrequited love of Martha, Donna is just what the show needed. Someone who can really give the Doctor the business and keep him humble so he doesn't fly off the rails.
He needed a "mate".😂
That final scene with Bernard Cribbins makes me cry with joy every time.

The best thing about Donna is that she's not romantically interested in the Doctor. That's what makes her such a great companion and this is a wonderful season!
The "Rose reveal" was huge. Season 4 is very strong -- especially the back half -- so buckle up.

Bernard Cribbins was brought back as Wilf (from the last episode) when the actor who played Donna's dad passed away before the episode began shooting. Wilf suddenly became her grandfather.
During shooting, rather than before actually. Howard Attfield did film at least some of the scenes on the hill before he passed away and those are included as bonus material on the DVD set. IIRC, the episode was dedicated to him as well.
Wow never knew this! Terrible to hear that about the actor, the show would have felt so different without Wilf
One of the great things about this episode is that they immediately drop 3 mysteries on you; the bees are disappearing, planets are disappearing, and Rose showing up.
Fun fact: the cat flap was invented by Sir Isaac Newton, who also less famously discovered the theory of gravity.

The return of Donna! Donna is considered one of the top Doctor who companions in the series entire history so I can’t wait for you guys to see why this season. Also Catherine Tate and David Tennant become really good friends after filming this season and have went on to work in multiple projects together in the years since.
Now that you know Donna is back, just going to say, many people were apprehensive with her return, but the character arc is one of the best in the series.
That moment at the end there is one of the best scenes in the entire series as far as I'm concerned. It makes Donna so endearing with how happy and genuine she looks waving down at her grandpa, and he just can't contain his pride in and excitement for her. Just top-tier stuff.
I think with her first episode Donna spends a lot of time being in "me" mode (I mean, it WAS her wedding day, some of that is to be expected) so that last scene in this episode is touching because it shows us who Donna cares about most, outside of herself. It helps her feel more relatable and more matured from before.
Series 4 is without a doubt some of the best of Who. So excited for this

Bernard Cribbins playing Donna's grandad in such a way, he's one of the rarely characters in Doctor Who everyone agrees he's sublime in that role. Fun fact, Bernard, as a person, was so special, David and Georgia named one of their sons after his character Wilfred.
I have been waiting since the Runaway Bride for you to see Donna again. I remember you not liking her in that and I thought just you wait. lol.

Bernard cribbins (wilf) is a nation treasure in the UK and has been around for 70 years (recently died sadly).. he's essentially a comedy actor but done straight stuff too... he's even had a number 1 single..!!
Strongest season of all time for a lot of fans. You’re in for an incredible ride… yes there’ll be a lot of humour… but the drama and horror are stepped up a notch too.

The way I heard it David Tennant and Catherine Tate had a lot of fun working together on “Runaway Bride.” Tennant subsequently made an appearance on one of Tate’s comedy specials and they had even more fun doing that - clips are worth a look, actually, if they’re still on TH-cam. So for the next year Tennant kept saying to anyone who would listen on the “Who” production how awesome it would be if Catherine Tate came back, but she had her own stuff going on so no way would she be interested, they thought. At the same time Catherine was telling everyone who would listen how much fun she had on “Who” with Tennant, but surely they wouldn’t be interested in having her back, yadda yadda. Someone finally got sick of hearing one or the other going on like this so out of frustration they made a call, found out the other would be delighted to reteam so the “Who” show runner built the fourth season around Donna Noble, and everyone lived happily ever after. 😊
Penny Carter, the reporter who was tied to the chair, is a remnant of the companion that was originally being planned as the season four companion if Catherine Tate hadn’t come back. The show runner has said he liked Penny Carter but he wasn’t sure how to make her different enough from Rose and Martha to be most effective, but he had no such problems with Catherine Tate.

I don’t think you recognised him, but Donna’s granddad, Wilf, was the same old man the Doctor met when he beamed down to Earth in the Christmas episode you’ve just watched, Voyage of the Damned. Played by the same actor, Bernard Cribbins. The reason why he was drafted in as Donna’s granddad is because the actor who played her dad in the Christmas episode she was in, The Runaway Bride, died from cancer between the making of that story and this one. Donna’s mother is played by the same actress who played her in The Runaway Bridge. You guys are gonna love Wilf as the season progresses.
The character, Penny Carter, the journalist who was tied up for most of this story, was originally going to be the name of the new companion. It was only when Russell T Davies had the idea of asking Catherine Tate if she would like to come aboard the TARDIS as a companion (to which she agreed to do), that the Penny Carter character was dropped.
Catherine Tate’s performance as Donna is gonna blow you away this season. She is funny, smart but also dramatically she will get you in the feels a lot!

This is the second reaction I've watched where they didn't seem to make the connection between the man working the newsstand and grandpa.
@@mortimerbrewster3671 TBF Brit's of a certain age would all know and recognise BC whenever they saw him. In the Titanic expisode he was just a bit part, and it is not surprising overseas (or possibly younger Brits if they have never seen BC) viwers would not take note of the new svendor.

Tennant and Catherine Tate have played the Doctor and Donna in quite a few audio spinoffs. They also appeared on stage together in Much Ado About Nothing.
Their version of Much Ado is one of my favorites of all time.
Season 4 is easily my favorite revival season ever. Just completely solid, not a single episode I don't like. So exciting to see you two get to it!
Had a blast watching this reaction lads, that ending is one of my favourite endings in Doctor Who, the joy from Wilf is so contagious, cant help but smile!

I LOVE DONNA! She's the best companion of all time in my opinion, including Classic Who.
Catherine Tate is a famous comedian (as well as a Shakespeare-trained actor) in the UK, and everybody was hyped when she became the companion! She and David Tennant are great friends in real life -- they have done a lot of theatre and even musical performances together -- and their platonic chemistry really shows on screen.
I love ALL of the companions so far, but Donna is a gem for sure. and I think the best part is how they interact, and how different the relationship is between them.

You are right about Catherine Tate being a more comic actress, she had a sketch comedy show that ran for several years. You should check out her Red Nose Day sketch with David Tennant. She does get plenty of opportunities to show her more serious side as well in this series.

I've been waiting for this reaction!! I am so glad that you got over your initial annoyance with Donna (which a lot of people shared; the character was *supposed* to be annoying), and recognize how just meeting the Doctor once changed her so much. She's my favorite companion of all time and Catherine and David just shine together. Season 4 is one of the best, start to finish, and I am so excited for you to watch it. There isn't a bad ep in the bunch.

Donna Noble is my favourite modern Doctor Who companion (along with her grandfather Wilf) and she has a great arc and this season has some of my favourite episodes. Catherine Tate not only excels at comedy but she shows her dramatic acting ability as well in this season. (She went to drama school for 3 years.) If you get the chance, check out the sketch Catherine and David did for one of her Christmas comedy specials where he plays the ghost of Christmas present.

Fun Fact, Bernard Cribbins who played Donna's grandad, was the Doctor's companion in the 1966 movie Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D. its not considered canon as it was a made for cinema movie based on one of the early stories of the TV show and starred Peter Cushing as the Dr.
Donna can be jarring at first but she is one of the most unique companions to ever climb aboard and I love her with Tennant so much! NOT having the underlying Doctor / Companion romance question is also a freaking relief.

The best series, and the best companion by far. That isn't to say others to come aren't good, because they are, but Donna and Wilf, tv heaven. I love this episode so much, and from what you asked me before, this series has the third episode in my top 3, and many others in my top tier list.

Season 4 is just pure joy, can't wait to see how you react.
I think everyone agreed that Donna started as "too much" in what was supposed to be a one-off appearance (Catherine Tate had an incredibly popular sketch show at the time and was incredibly busy). The biggest contrast to losing Rose you can imagine.
You can see in this episode how the events of The Runaway Bride has changed Donna, but there's still a lot of the brash powerhouse underneath. You'll also get to see that Tate is not just an excellent comic actor, but an enormously skilful dramatic actor too.
Finally woo! Best Tennant season for sure. Cant wait for you guys to get to Moffat's era. I'm excited for your Dot and Bubble reaction too!

If she had not been freaking out that entire time would not have been believable.

To give Donna a little bit of a benefit of the doubt from her first episode, it was her wedding day and it EVERYTHING was going wrong. Even the most aimable person can turn into a bridezilla/groomzilla. That being said, it doesn't just come out of nowhere, so I'm sure Donna still has that in her.
The finale of this season is still the best so far!
The way they humanise Donna in her season was fantastic. You realise her "annoying" gobby aspects are just a defense and she's really a down-to-earth and kind person.
This is my favorite season of DW. In terms of quality of episodes and emotional punches, it’s the best. Catherine Tate displays both her comedic and dramatic talents, she’s amazing.

Of course, Catherine Tate normally writes her own stuff and is known for her chameleon-like ability to play multiple characters, but RTD just got her, recognized her abilities, and wrote for her beautifully.

For me Donna is the every girl stand in for a companion. We don’t all want a boyfriend in the Doctor. We aren’t all sexy blonde teens or gorgeous smart infatuated med students. Donna is regular. Ordinary. And it sets up a lot of opportunities to tell us that everyone is special.
