Install Pump in Kenmore Elite Front Load Washer - OE Code

  • You got a OE code on your Kenmore Elite Front Load Washer? "OE" is a "Drain error " and it is initiated by your washer not having fully drained in 10 minutes. Sometimes it's caused by a clogged filter but the last 3 times I've seen it, I had to replace the drain pump on my Kenmore. A few years back we posted a video on how to install a pump in a Kenmore elite front load washer. It seemed to fit a need and we get comments from time to time that asked us questions like, thanks for posting, you have me the inspiration to do this myself. I'm here to say, if I can do this, so can you. To install this pump in our front load washer, it's going to take about 2 hours. Mainly because you may be seeing these things for the first time and your being careful. This is my 3rd go of it and now I can do this relatively quickly. This is certainly not something I enjoy doing but where we live, in Monterey, Virginia, there are no repair folks for approximately 1.5 hours. And getting them to come fix an appliance is not cost effective, if you can get them at all. Below is a list of the tools I used to install this pump, along with a link to a couple items that made this job much easier. Buy the pliers. And please thank me in the comments. I wish had bought them for my first and second pumps I've installed in this Kenmore Elite Washer.
    Tool List
    Needle nose pliers - if not these something with a point on them
    14 & 10 mm sockets - deep or shallow doesn't matter
    Short and Long extensions
    1/4" drive for the sockets - You can use a larger drive but may prove difficult
    Philips head screwdriver
    A razor knife
    The pliers (link below) for the ring around the front gasket
    My favorite headlamp (link below)
    As far as part number goes, check inside your door for the part number. You may or may not need the serial number. Look up your part at this site
    www.partselect.com/Kenmore-Wa...
    Put in your part number. In my case, our washer is a 79640512900. About the middle of the page you will find a box to put in the part description. I entered "pump", and found the pump I needed. In one of the photos is the parts diagram. This can be very helpful. Look for the pump. It's called Washing Machine Drain Pump and Motor Assembly. And now you have the part number, in my case it's 4681EA2001T. Take this part number and plug it into Amazon. You will notice that you will see multiple version. Choosing the cheapest one may not be the best idea but in my case, it worked very well. I did have to make a small modification to the cover on the pump. For me, it was worth ordering from Amazon and getting the part faster and cheaper than sears.com.
    Links to the pump I used, the pliers and my headlamp.
    Pump - amzn.to/3gLcdd2 (be sure to check your part number)
    Pliers - amzn.to/3N6Hl2R (please thank me in the comments!)
    Headlamp - amzn.to/3SyWbAh

    My (09) Kenmore Elite is like yours and had the same 0E code. So since my older son is more mechanically inclined we used your video in finding where all the screws are and how to get at the pump, that was a big help!!!
    We got the pump out and saw the impeller was broke, so we verified part number from several online sites along with my washer model number and ordered new pump and gasket along that special ring tool from Amazon, I got all three items for $100.00 in 4 days. For some reason most of the gasket prices was $100.00+, I managed to find one for $45.00, pump prices was around $25,00 - $45.00.
    I called an appliance repair place and he quoted $450.00 - $550.00 for fixing pump only, so it does save a lot if when folks like you put a video out showing how it's done, thanks for posting!!!!!!!!!!

      @@MillGapFarms Oh, we do have a junk drawer! But the spare screw goes to live in the barn in the wood shop. Maybe it will get used sooner!? @@MillGapFarms Any tips on the softener? Where in the water line does it go? We have a drilled well and lots of iron & manganese in the water.

      @MillGapFarms  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Please accept my apology Ms. Wilder. I did not see your comment. Our water softener is in our basement and is installed before the water splits and goes to the hot water and the cold water to the house. There are some kits that you can buy on amazon that will tell you the harness of your water. Here is a test strip that will help you understand your water better in regards to hardness. amzn.to/3L8v2CW This version tests a little more and it might give you a better idea as to how much iron you have in your water. amzn.to/3Sj9rMb For the best understanding do a water test at your local health department or independent lab. Again, I apologize for missing your comment. Thanks for watching our video and posting your question. Kevin

    Thanks for sharing! I ordered the part you posted, with full trust in you (lol I didnt even check) pump has been replaced and washer is fixed. That rubber gasket ring was definitely a pain in the ass. It did just come right off though with a little tug of a needle nose pliers. Getting it on was the difficult part. I just used 2 hard plastic scrapers and used them to slide the bottom on while my wife held the sides in place.

Any chance you have a quick tip or how-to video for accessing a washer underneath a drier without removing the drier? • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Carmen, Thanks for watching and asking your question. It sounds like you are using these as stackable units. We don't as you can tell from the video. There is a comment where a gentleman shares that he did it from the bottom. I think that is totally possible. Of course you have to get to it. If your washer could be pulled away from the wall (guessing it's against one) you could lean them backwards against a wall and work from the bottom. I would try this myself but before I did, I would make sure to secure the bottom so it doesn't kick out towards the front farther. Something that holds the units from moving is necessary. In my mind, the units could kick out and land on their back. Most likely damaging where the hoses go. Then you've got a bigger problem. The next time I need to replace our pump, I'm going to try to access it from the bottom. No need to take off the gasket if I don't have to. I think you would need to be adventurous to change the pump with the washer on top. If you do it, take a video or a photo and email to us. www.millgapfarms.com. I would love to learn for your experience. Thanks Kevin

    How did you come to the conclusion it was the pump and just a clogged filter?

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching our video Tonyromano4341. The first time I got the "OE" code, I tried to clean out the filter. It had scale from our hard water but no major clogs. Then I did what I thought was the next step, install the pump. After getting the pump off it became apparent that the impeller was broken, or at least not working correctly. Every time I do this, it's the same thing. The impeller breaks on the shaft some how. I have lost count as to how many times these pumps have broken on us. I have been keeping one on the shelf for a couple years now. To the credit of the machine, we do a lot of laundry in it. Between living on a farm, two kids we have a b&b we operate here and it's not uncommon to do 5-6 loads a day. Not every day but 4 to 5 days a week we have multiple loads going each day. I don't put a lot of faith in the pumps. LG and Kenmore use the same pump. Thanks for your question. I hope this helps. Kevin

      There is certainly more than one way to get this done. Would you mind sharing that video in the comments of this one. We could all learn from that. Thanks for watching! Kevin

    2 faceplate screws is all you need to remove

      Hi Americanpride1100, Thanks for watching and offering advice. I've only done this 4 or 5 times so far... and one time about 3 weeks ago. How can you access the faceplate screws with the top on? Having done this a couple times, I can now do it in less than an hour. The first couple times, not so much. I would love to learn how to reduce that time even further. Thanks Kevin

    You don’t need a tool for the front spring u can pop it out with a screwdriver I’ve done hundreds I use a needle nose to put it back that tool is for 5he rear spring

      I have popped out the spring with a screwdriver. And it seems the devil tested me on the needle nose pliers... a couple times. So I bought the tool and it was worked flawlessly ever since. I would love to see how you are using you pliers to get those back on. That would be one nifty video that I would be glad to post for you. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts. Kevin

    You skipped the whole process of taking the door off 🙄

    • @MillGapFarms
      @MillGapFarms  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Daniel Shinsky for watching our video. I don't think in this video that I took the door off. I think I took off the front pane that included the door. I watched the video again and I don't see the need to remove the door. In fact, down in the comments for this video a viewer suggested going through the bottom and not taking off the door and gasket. I'm definitely going to try that next time I need to change out the pump. Thanks for watching and leaving your comment. Kevin
