Front Load Washer Repair - Not Draining or Spinning - How to Unclog the Drain Pump

- Video showing you how to clean out the drain pump on your Front Load Washer. You will want to do this if you have a front load washer that is not spinning or draining.
Most of the spinning issues with front loaders comes from the pump having debris in it. A dirty coin trap will cause a slow drain or no drain and this leads to a no spin.
Here I show you how to remove it and get your washer spinning again.
I will be making a video on how to remove the entire front panel in case you have a machine that does not have the removable lower panel like the one in the video.

The washing machine used in this video is a Frigidaire Front Load. This repair will work for Kenmores, Maytag, Samsung, GE and any other front load washer. They all work basically the same.

I have no idea what drives a person to create such helpful videos but I sure am glad for your generosity sharing this info with me. I was really not looking forward to trying to figure out why my washer wouldn't drain. Now I'm confident I can do it. Thank you very much.
Ok, finished the job and all worked out well. My washer (Maytag Neptune with glass door) has the pump & boot at the rear of the unit with a large trap door on the rear. Two screws to pop the door off and it's all right there. Still, your video was very helpful and allowed me to make quick work of it. Found that if I moved the machine to doorway to our garage (short distance) I could put a tub behind and below it (garage is a few steps lower than house) and allow the washer to drain through it's hose into the tub. This way the job had little leakage.

Very good video with clear explanations. The hardest part with any of my DIY repairs is finding the appropriate repair manuals which often don't exist for public consumption. Just did this. The machine made a loud hum but would not drain. This video was a great tutorial. Since the washer didn't have a front panel, I did have to take off the top and entire front panel (there's a youtube video on how); not hard actually. Talk about clogged trap. I removed a folded dollar bill, $1.68 in change, a 5" wide heart shaped fabric decal, a few paper clips, a bobby pin, and a bit of chewed up scotch brite (the final straw, I believe, based on its location). Put it back together and ran a trial load. Bingo! No leaks, machine ran complete cycle. At 73, this girl is strutting.

Well this video was everything I needed! We ended up ordering a new drain pump, although I’m still not sure that was necessary - the reason I replaced it was once we got in there we didn't find any blockage or objects, but our impeller wasn’t spinning freely as you showed in the video (although there didn’t seem to be anything stopping it - there WAS some slight resistance). Here’s the thing: the replacement pump was the same! So some pumps might very well NOT have fully-spinning impellers, in case that’s helpful to anyone.
Our washer is a 2009 Frigidaire/Electrolux front loader, analog, FTF530FS. And it's working again!!! Thanks for the video!

Bill I can't thank you enough. This was the only video I watched before attempting to fix my washer. I had gone as far as to pricing washers already. My boyfriend and I thought our washer was toast! thank you for this video! I was able to clean my own out and now it is working great! Found 6 Bobby pins, 3 hair ties, $1.79 in change...then of course dirt and dog hair. It was disgusting but I did it and I couldn't have without this video.
Just did this myself and your video was invaluable. I had almost $2.00 in change in the trap, and a garment label jamming the impeller from spinning at all. Biggest pain was dealing with the water going everwhere and all the wet clothes. One super handy tool was a hand pump and bucket for removing all that water from my Speed Queen front loader. Plus a bunch of cleaning towels to mop everthing up. I also used a box fan to dry everything after getting it back together (without the kick panel installed).

Great video! I cleared undies(wife's) from the boot, and a 2 inch slimy plug of lint and hairpins that was completely blocking the coin trap, and 43 cents... and a guitar pick.

Brilliant video. Thank you so much. We have a vintage washer in Spain with no user-facing filter, drain or indeed removable cover for access of anything. Finally, using Stonehenge technology, we turned it upside down and located all the parts shown in the video and found three Kleenex tissues (at least) clogging the pump. It's now working a treat. You are awesome! I was able to fix our washer based on your instructions. I have one of the Frigidaire Affinity washers (with the silver control knob and buttons) where I had to remove the entire front panel. It took a little effort and a quickly drawn schematic to keep track of where screws went and where wires plugged in ... but I did it! And yeah... there was a 2008 quarter, a hair tie, a portion of some underwear, hair and just nasty/gritty gunk.
Also you are correct... if you remove that 3rd portion of pipe up to the far right (in your video @ 3:47)... holy cow is it insanely hard to get back on! I was fighting with it for about 10 minutes. All in all... you saved us a big repair bill or buying a new washer. So much thanks goes to you and this video!

I've been in the business for approx 35 years.
This washer is why they changed the access to the front so the consumer can clean it out.
That said, when I do these, because I've grown to hate spring clamps, I use screw type hose clamps when I am refastening the hoses.
It saves time because the spring clamps have an attitude and fight back and spoooiiiing awayyyyy.lol
I have to do this tomorrow so, I'm ready with the screw clamps.

My own appliances are mostly WP and my washer is a top loader.
NO electronic controls either.
I could not get one of the spring clamps back at all! Used screw type clamps after an hour of trying to keep calm.
one very very important note. Like everybody else it was very difficult to reconnect the rubber boot to the pump. I spent about 2 hours trying to get it to work. my hands are killing me. Went to the local Ace hardware store to buy a different type of clamp. the kind dude recommended a pair of small channel locks. duh! A small pair of channel locks worked perfectly it held the clamp open around the lip of the boot as I reinserted it onto the pump. problem solved. Use a small pair of channel locks. Thank you for making the video. Also may there be a special place in hell for the GE engineer who designed such a customer unfriendly method of cleaning out the trap. and to think GE makes jet engines. God save us

This video provided spot on instructions that allowed us to repair our GE WSSH300G0WW washer. We found lots of strange junk in the coin trap and caught in the impeller. Once that was cleared the washer has worked perfectly ever since.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! As a single mom I just bought a used washer and of course a week later it stops working and all I could find were the ones with the little door on the front but of course my washer didn't have that. This video was so perfect and easy and I was able to fix the washer all on my own!! I also found $2.26 and a lot of junk inside the drain pump.
23 coins, a house key and a button, not to mention all the muck completely filling the coin trap. You my friend are a life saver and a pocketbook saver as I was ready to spring for a new $500+ machine. However, can't say I'll go through that again; at 72 years old I just don't have the patience any more. But many thanks along with big hugs for your help. Now to put a load in to see if it's back to normal.

Another washer saved by a great video. Our Amana stopped draining and we thought it was all over. Took off the back cover and pulled the two hoses connecting to the drain pump and hello hair clog! A repairman might have just replaced the pump on account of the nD code on the display but all it needed was a little TLC and the washer is back to normal. Also gave us an excuse to clean out behind the washer and dryer because WOW stuff accumulates there when you're not looking! I found about eight spiral bound notebooks, a new in package dog leash, and a whole unopened container of laundry pods!

You just saved me a bunch of money! I was gonna go buy a washer and dryer set, then I saw your video! I can't believe how much crap was in the catch thingy in the boot! I almost gave up immediately, since 1 of the screws on the front panel seemed to be stripped..but I bought a better screwdriver and was able to remove the screw. It was a little hard for me to get that green clamp to fit over the boot and other thing. But I was able to do it while reminding myself the cost of a new washer would be. My 10 yr old washer drains and spins like it's new again! I was hoping I could show a pic of the crap that was in that thing. I have to admit, I am really proud of myself for attempting and completing the task! Thanks to you!!!
My dad was about to call the repair man when I found your video. Me and my little brother fixed our washer together. It works now. We didn't have the right tools to disassemble the front. I had to remove the back part and work from there. It was difficult with the horrible angle but we did it. We found 60 cent and baby wipes. I'm going to have a talk with my family about sorting through their baskets before doing laundry. Thank you so much.

I've had to do this half a dozen times, it never seems to get easier. Today I busted blood vessels in both my thumbs because of those freaking spring clamps. Ugh! I came to look up what pliers were best for removing and replacing those stupid things.
My front panel doesn't come off but since my arms are smaller than most men's I just take the back panel off and work from the back and the bottom with the washer laying on its front.

thank you thank you thank you for this excellent video. my husband and I fixed our machine tonight using your video. it was making a horrible grinding noise and wouldnt drain. in fact it hasn't drained well for months. coin trap was so clogged. not it runs amaizing. the only difficult part was trying to clamp the boot back onto the pump. took both of us to get it on.
Many Thanks, ours was a bit different, (In between the coin trap hose, and pump there was a plastic coin trap). I found that a paint tray liner fit under to catch the water BTW. But most importantly I made $8.43 on the deal! {The job only took 30 min. so I'm claiming $17.00 an hour}. Plus I found my missing rewards card from Auto Zone, and a key neither of us recognized. Thanks again! And my wife says thanks too.

Bill, I truly owe you some thanks! I have almost no mechanical inclination, and your video walked me through everything after our washer quit on us ( at 11:30, the night before a family vacation). After I unclogged everything, I found a piece of metal stuck in the motor as well! Getting the clamps back on wasn't easy, but it runs like a champ now. Thanks again!

I happen to have seen this video too late. I had to go to the pain of figuring it out myself. For any newbie, follow the step by step, this description was very crisp and clear. Thanks for your video. I cleaned out my drain trap like I have done lots of times cause my front loader wouldnt drain but this time it still wouldnt drain. After i watched your video I put my finger in the pump to check if the fan blades spin and found an object trapped inside just like you said might happen. As I type this , my washer is at work washing my stuff.

Hey so I have the A 10 code. Did everything as suggested by many also replaced the washer drain pump. Even after doing that, I still have the A 10 error. What else should I be looking at?
I also think my previous drain pump might have been good but doesn’t matter now that I got a new one.
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.

I figured it out. The rubber boot connected to the drum before it connects to the drain pump had a sock in it.
Finally have my machine up and running. 😎
Edit: After the drain cycle I still noticed my clothes being a bit wet. I replaced the motor drive belt in my front load washing machine and it solved the issue.

This was almost exactly my washer...just didn't have the strainer in the tubing before the pump. $1,25, a button and 2 bra underwires were in the tubing and a plastic bread tab was in the pump. YEs, the spring hose clamps were the biggest pain. Saved myself a repair bill thanks to you
So I'm out of town on a job when the wife calls screaming that the washer wont drain or spin...I tell her honey what do you want me to do I'm 1700 miles away, call the appliance repair man....she then says "I NEED THE WASHER TONIGHT THE KIDS UNIFORMS FOR THE GAME ARE DIRTY!" again I say ..."what do you want me to do...I know nothing about washers....and I'm also 1700 miles away....She calls me some choice words and hangs up....I shrugged my shoulders and got back to work......At around 2am (my time) I get a call from my wife saying ..."I'm so sorry babe I didn't mean to sound so bitchy...I got the washer working"...I'm very surprised and asked her HOW????....She then tells me she found your video and followed the instructions you gave and was able to get the filter cleaned out and everything put back together without any leaks or problems. She did 3 loads after she got it fixed and she says the the machine is running better then ever. I just want to thank you for even taking the time to make this video and also for making it so easy to understand. My wife is not mechanically inclined so if she can do it anyone can do it....You saved me a lot of money and also got my wife to apologize which in my world is priceless. Thank You!!!

Now for my comment. I cannot imagine a wife her husband and screaming at him, but that's not for me to judge. On the other hand, Kudos to her for taking control of things and handling the problem. I bet she felt very liberated and proud! My dad, a mechanical engineer, raised me. That being said, I typically only call my husband with a problem AFTER I have the solution and have taken care of it. The last thing he needs is someone nagging him while he's working! I'd think it would deter a man from answering his wife's calls.

If you have a front loader you have to learn to do this. It's not a matter of if the drain pump or boot will get clogged with something it's when. Plus, it's going to happen more than once. It's not very difficult to do just a little frustrating hooking everything back up if you haven't done it before.

Thanks. I got 0.90 cents. I am an automotive engineer. What a poorly designed Maytag machine. If this was a car, the manufacturing plant would kill me for bad access to the components and difficult assembly. Poor access for no reason, this could be much bigger so that a normal sized human can get their hands into the work space without have to be triple jointed. Stan D.

I had taken everything apart to clean 15 years of accumulated smutz, then had trouble getting everything back together correctly. And unfortunately, I did remove the boot from the pressure tube, painful. I had to use stainless automotive hose clamps to complete the assembly. Works likes new.

I fixed our Miele W3725 front loader by watching this fellow. We had an error display "drain error" and our clothes always came out wet. I removed the panel on the front LHS, unscrewed the plug (it's best to do this when machine is empty) and removed the drain plug and cleared it (pulled out hair clips, 10 cent coin, sticks and fabric) screwed it back in, turned it on and she works perfectly. Saved calling a serviceman and had it fixed in 5 minutes.
Thanks for being here for us who cannot remove and haul the washer 60 miles one way to the shop ( if they will work on it right away so you don't have to make another trip) and pay BIG DOLLARS for an easy fix

We watched this and found we were lucky on our LG washer as it had a door and a filter catch that we only had to open and clean out a mess made from the backing that came off a rug and plugged the drain off. Love the LG washer and kudos for making this helpful video.!!!!!!!!Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since retiring I work on washers and dryers in my garage, I too struggled to get the boot coin trap out. The hardest part for me is getting the top of the boot back on the machine. There is a special hell for the engineers who design these machines.

Bill, thanks a million. I just cleaned the drain catch thanks to the confidence of purpose that your video gave me. Among other things in it was a plastic doggie poop bag (the main culprit), coins, hair pins and the like. You saved me hundreds of dollars and the inconvenience of having to schedule a service call. It turned out to be a simple repair too, the front lower section tilted out with the help of a screwdriver, then it was just unscrewing the filter. I caught most of the water so it wasn't too much of a mess. Thanks again, you are a good teacher.
