I use both, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and the SEL35F18 at my A6000 and I can confirm what many others here are saying: The Sigma is much sharper at wide open aperture. Unfortunately this test doesn't show that. Even at f/1.4 the Sigma is brilliant in the center, while the Sony is much softer at f/1.8. You have to stop down the Sony to f/2.8 to have the same sharpness. So if you want to have high extraction with high sharpness for brilliant portraits, the Sigma will give you better results.
The only big advantage of the Sony is the size. But to be honest, if I had to use f/2.8 instead of f/1.4 for the same sharpness, I would go for the Sigma and accept the 3cm longer lens.
There is a well known F2.0-autofocus-bug of the Sigma lens. AF-S is not working properly between f/1.7 and f/2.0 when using PAL (f/1.4 is fine). When using NTFC the problem is between f/1.4 and f/1.7. That's why many US users don't recognize that there is a problem but just think that the lens is not so sharp at open aperture. But it's a bug which Sigma knows well (they don't have a solution yet). Solution: The problem is completely gone if you use AF-C. Then the lens is also very sharp at open aperture. If you want to use focus and recompose, there are some tricks you can do to make it work with AF-C (back button focus or using one button as AF/ manual focus switch).

Your comments were actually better then the video to me :) I was considering both lens and using in a A6500 i won't miss the OSS and i assume also because the focus system on the A6500 is amazing that more shots would be usable and not only 70% then again that i can only know after i try :)

I had both of these in my hand just yesterday (thanks to Hunts in Cambridge MA for getting them for me to look at) and the size difference made it a no-brainer. To me, the whole idea of the 6000 is the size. The Sony lens keeps the package small. The Sigma lens is more than twice as large. Just not what I wanted.

Since the testing description was silent on this issue, please be sure to confirm that you were either testing autofocus accuracy while on a tripod on a fixed object or that you were using AF-C. Why? There is a measurable difference in depth of field between F1.4 and F1.8, especially when the subject is closer to the lens. Any minor swaying will cause the image to come out as soft or not as sharp. This is especially true when shooting portraits at F1.4. You need to nail focus on the eye (notice that I said singular) and you just won't be able to do so with any consistency if shooting in AF-S. A lot of the complaints about focusing accuracy stem from this lack of understanding of wide aperture lenses. Most people can get away to some degree with sloppy technique with wider angle F1.8 lenses, that just won't get you through the day at F1.4.

  • @johnadams9044
    @johnadams9044 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

The Sigma 30mm f1.4 suffers from too much annoying AF noise. Also, it displays excessive chromatic aberration. Returned it and purchased the Sony 35mm f1.8 and am very satisfied with it.

It would be great if you could do a follow up now that 1) you have an A6500 with IBIS and 2) the Sigma has had a firmware update that is supposed to minimise manual focus/AF issues. I'm tossing up which one to buy to use for mostly photos (portrait and street photography), but some video as well. With an A6500, the lack of OSS in the Sigma might not be an issue at all and it appears to be a better lens apart from that.

I am UK based, and left for my holiday home in Europe, taking with just my a6000 and Sony F4/18-105 G.. Amongst others, I left behind my super A mount Sal35f14G, as with the LA-EA4 attached its to darn heavy. So here I am away from home and need to make a short break to Boston MA. Wanting to travel light, taking the bulk of my 18-105 is a non starter. So I hunt around, and find two of your videos that impressed me. Now thanks to your videos I have a Sony 35mm F/1.8 winging its way from Amazon Germany, and I am truly happy. So happy, that I had no hesitation in subscribing to your TechnologyMafia site.

Hmm... I have the Sigma and on both of my a6300's I can use the in camera corrections to get rid of the barrel distortion. Works on my 16mm Sigma as well. You shouldn't need some 3rd party software to do this. Perhaps you're working on an older firmware? However, there are no firmware updates for the 16mm and it works.

I finally start to get the big picture.
The Sigma lenses seem to be a dream and would love to have one, BUT I cannot tell you how AF sometimes super important is.
Picture this: IF YOU have nephews or family you wish to photograph and CAPTURE THAT MOMENT, AF is sooooo important.
I love vintage lenses and manual focusing, but coming back to the row above: until you focus or you wait for a slow lens to focus (AF),
you would have lost so many nice moments and cute faces of your family members.
See? It just depends WHAT you are shooting.
There is NO perfect lens, out there, that is super fast, super sharp and super good in low light and with OSS on it, unfortunately.
If you the guy who stays there with his tripod, lights up a cigar and shoots stars or landscapes or buildings, go for the Sigma.
If you my guy, with crazy little bunnies hopping all over the place, go for the faster AF lens.
Sony stands out pretty good, as well. Nobody will zoom 100%, 200% in your picture, to see if it is sharp.
Nobody will see the less saturation (which, I like and you can anyways add more saturation in your picture profile in camera),
BUT I do not want to stay and correct barrel distorsions. I want to send the pictures through wi-fi.
And usually, my sister in law wants the pics copied on her HDD, as well, before we leave.
So, I think I would go for the Sony...

I just ordered the Sigma 30mm f1.4 for my a6500 on Amazon. I was between both lenses and this video helped me choose which to buy (and backs up what I read about both of them). I got my a6500 with the 18-135mm and while it is a great walk-around zoom, I want to really see what the sensor is capable of with a sharp prime lens.

  • @maereanm

Sigma 30mm f/1.4 uses the Phase Detect auto-focus capabilities of the body/sensor only in the center rectangle of the rule of 3rds.
Use the Sigma only in AFC (Auto Focus Continuous) Zone (that center rectangle). This way the focus speed and accuracy is as good as the Sony lenses (like the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8). The focus accuracy will get very close to 100%.
Don't use the Sigma in AFC Wide as it may focus in the outside rectangles of the rule of 3rds where it switches to Contrast Detect and will start hunting for focus (taking maybe a full second to focus).
Also, Sony Alpha 6500 can be configured to favor good focus instead of releasing the shutter as soon as possible ("Priority Set in AFC" to be set to "AF" instead of "Release").
This option is not present on a6000.
The sharpness of Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is just awesome.
Sigma is sharper at f/1.4 across the frame than the "Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8" is at f/2.8.
    Take a look at www.dpreview.com/reviews/lens-compare-fullscreen?compare=true&lensId=sigma_30_1p4_dc_dn_c&cameraId=sony_nex7&version=0&fl=30&av=1.4&view=mtf-ca&lensId2=sony_e_24_1p8&cameraId2=sony_nex7&version2=0&fl2=24&av2=1.8
Sony Zeiss 24mm is much softer at f/1.8 than the Sigma at f/1.4 which is a shame considering the Sony's $1100 price tag.
Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is what I always have on the camera.
Sony Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 just sits there in a corner of the room and collects dust.
a6500 at ISO 6400 gets the same image quality as a6000 at ISO 3200.
Adding the f/1.4 from the Sigma, you can get a low light monster in the form of a small and light form-factor.
    Which is awesome.

Yesterday, I used that combination at ISO 320 giving me 1/250 second at f/5.6 to shoot a group of five people standing in a row outside. I used single shot, AFS, wide area with face detect turned on. The camera showed focus squares around several of the peoples faces but the focus would go in and out. It ended up with the row of subjects just ever so soft with the background more in focus. What do you think went wrong...

I bought the 35mm to be used with an a6000 as a walkaround lens, but returned it mostly due to 3 issues:
    1) The 52.5mm focal length was way too much to be used in many scenarios. My main reason to return it.
    2) Poor stabilization for video shooting, actually the worst I´ve tried in a long time, including those of cheap, compact cameras.
    3) Perfectly audible noise while shooting videos indoors, quite probably stemmig from the OSS working 100% of the time.
I´m now considering this Sigma to be used with the stabilized a6500, but I´m not sure about the focusing noises you mentioned. I wish you would´ve let us know how it sounds...

Nice :) and do you think there is any difference in image quality between this Sony 35 1.8 oss for apsc and Sony fe 35 mm 1.8 for full frame? There is about 13 years difference, so I'd like to know, if I will upgrade from oss to fe on my a6400, if I could have better image (for video). Thank you

I would like to see how the older Sigma30f2.8 would compare to these two. From what I've read so far the 2.8 Sigma is better for landscape since it's sharper at infinity compared to Sony and the Sigma 1.4.

I have the sigma 30mm, for walking around town lens its a little big imo...however I took some shots of people on the street and the photos were impressive with the sigma...in my use case Im considering getting rid of the sigma 30mm and going with the sigma 56mm 1.4 and using it for portraits and some street photos and maybe pick up the 35mm sony later on...the size of the sony lens is very compelling for spending alot of time out and about , I hate bulky cameras and why I went with the sony A series

Just a comment about this comparison, Sony lens vs Sigma, and I'm seen the same thing on your other Sony vs Sigma review:
I think the sharpness, AND the color difference may both be from internal stay light flaring in the Sony. It definitely looks like internal lens flare to my eye. They're actually both resolving about the same (ignoring a few failures to focus), but colors on the Sony are very slightly washed-out and lower contrast than the Sigma, which is a clear indication of internal stray light. It could be better lens coatings by Sigma, or better non-reflective internal metal surfaces, or a little of both.
In any case, good job Sigma! Now when are you going to make native E-Mount lenses? Especially for Sony full-frame bodies like my a9?

Just what i expected. Plus the Sony in Indonesian price is about the same as the Sigma so i'd get the Sony then. The bokeh quality isn't that much different as i look into your photo image, only brighter on the Sigma end, so not much reason to go Sigma anyway. Thanks for the review!
PS: I wonder though, is it true the Sigma doesn't auto correct the barrel distortion in camera? Because if i need to do post editing everytime i shot with Sigma lens, it's very time consuming and unfortunate. I have read that Sigma already fixed the distortion with newer revision of their lens so which lens did you use? The old revision or the new?

    @massspec2285 5 ปีที่แล้ว

the difference between f1.8 and f1.4 is 2/3 of a stop. but f stop is not a measure of light being transmitted! so, don't be fooled by the f stops when you comment on light gathering capability! you need to check T stops for that. the sigma has a 1.8 T-stop while the sony has a 2.0 T-stop. hence, the sigma has ONLY 1/3 of a stop of an advantage in terms of light gathering capability. go and check the dxomark lens database which lists empirically found T stop values for each lens. f stop together with focal length will only give you idea about the dept of field, in other words, the 'bokehing' capability.

So I’m stuck between the two. This will be my 1st prime lens and I’m a beginner so I don’t want to make a regretful decision. I like the Sony because of the size and of course the good images it produces. I guess I’m trying to “grow” on the Sony lens but ultimately it looks like the sigma gives you the crisper sharper image which is what I want. I like the fact that you have a lower Fstop number and can use a lower iso to get a better picture. But then I heard the lens doesn’t have OSS. Which dealing with a slow shutter to let more light in might cause camera shake which could make it harder to get that better picture. Now I don’t do video now but eventually that’s my goal I’m just doing photos for now but I don’t want to get the sigma but then regret not having oss but I want a really good picture!!! Help please!!!!

Starting at about timeline 5.00, you state that you cannot explain the lack of grain with the Sony lens as conpared with the Sigma. One possible explanation "might be" that this Sigma is a bit sharper than the Sony (at least in this pair of images it looks that way) and thus the Sigma might be picking up the grain that the Sony is hiding...

Hi! Nice review! Sincerely, I prefer the Sigma 30 image. However, having to do mostly wedding video the question is: in the AF-C the engine is noisy and it feels a real problem for recording a good sound if you do not have an external microphone? I am traveling to Norway in 2 days and my main purpose would be to take pictures of streets, scenes/landscapes, Christmas lightings on the city streets, buildings, food entrees inside restaurants (could be in low light) with or without background blur, some portrait pictures of me with background blur, also some pictures of me in the back drop of fjords. All these photos would be on the instagram. So defintely looking for clarity, sharpness.
    Questions:
    1) Camera is Sony A6000 or Nikon D3400?
    2) What one lens do you recommend? Standard Kit lens 18-50 (f3.6-f5.6) on Sony or 16-55 on Nikon or prime lens 35mm 1.8 or prime lens 50mm 1.8 or prime lens 30 mm 1.4?
Also, should I just get the body and use prime lens instead of standard kit for all of these purposes or do I need both (standard and prime)?
    Cheers.

The ISO settings were different (2500 vs 3200) when you compared the 'hotel parking' sign pictures for sharpness. Doesn't seem like a fair comparison, the higher ISO picture is predictably 'noisier' which will affect the sharpness of the picture taken with the Sony lens.

    • @ArthurR
      @ArthurR  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

sharikmarius Right, that's part of what I was explaining. The camera adjusts ISO automatically in most modes, so if you are casually shooting, the Sigma lens will have lower ISO values, making it sharper.

Just stumbled upon your video. Good stuff, however: On your first comparison (not that I am a huge fan of Sigma), it's not really apples to apples. 35 mm at 1/8 and ISO 500 is not the same as 30mm at 1/4 and ISO 320. You are getting more sky and overexposing at the same time. If you step forward to get roughly same composition as on Sony shot with Sigma and either dial down ISO or dial up shutter speed, you'll get less haze in you picture. This is just IMHO, I might be wrong, but not by much :)
