@@kyletaggart Fantastic thanks for responding! Im curious, why not film with a 30mm to have your face look less distorted when filming these types of TH-cam videos? Is it your preferred style or a common way to vlog for most TH-camrs?
IMO the 35 F/1.8 OSS is the best all-around APS-C lens, especially for video shooters. Small, light, OSS, sharp, bokeh, fast aperture - equivalent to a a 52.5mm full frame and is a great companion to the 16-50 kit lens. Both those lens on a 5100, 6XXX can cover most your needs in a tiny package.
@@vikrantsingh8698 I would go with the Sony 55mm for portraits. Cheaper than the 35mm with better results. The 35mm is a good overall lens, the 50mm is best for portraits
Great comparison! I couldn't really tell a difference! I went with the Sony for it's size/weight and OSS. I think it's worth the higher price tag in the long run. Auto focus does seem slightly faster on the Sony. You can't go wrong with either lens. They both look sooo good!
The quality of your videos have gone up so much this year! Ikve the music. Also I love how when you're going through the specs on each lens you split the screen and have the specs showing over the lens itself👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
My man! Thank you! I often wonder if people notice the differences sometimes and what I’m trying. Thanks for not only noticing but giving me a boost in confidence!
Hello Kyle. I had the 30 f1.4. However, I found that it misfocusses a lot on my A6000. It's not as accuarate as my 30mm f2.8. Plus it's twice the weight and size. I am looking at the 35mm f1.8 for when the light drops. Does the 35f1.8 compare favourably against the 30 f2.8?
The Sigma appears to be a bit sharper and would be a great walk-around lens. Since I already have the Sigma 16mm, it would make sense to get the 30mm and I shoot mainly landscape, cityscape. The price, for this amateur is also a factor to consider. Size, I agree for the Sigma might be a factor to consider, however, the 16mm is not light, so, I am already use to that.
Wow! Fast Auto focus, geat review. I would sacrifice the weight for the sake of price. I love sony but too much expensive. They are both top of the class lenses, but as for me sigma is worth the price.
The Sony 35 was the first lens I bought for my 6000. I was blown away with the difference in the richness of colors I was getting from the 35 over my kit lens. I own the Sigma 16 and it is terrific but I do wish it had OSS. I also chose the Sony 18-105 Zoom over the Sigma 18-50 because of the OSS and the powered zoom, even though the Sigma was reviewed as being a sharper lens. I currently do more video so sharpness is not the end all for me. I really love the Sony 18-105 when I’m outside or in a brightly lit room. Very cool lens.
Tried both, kept the Sony. The Sigma almost the same size as the 18-135mm Sony lens, eliminating the reason I got a compact APC camera. It's excellent for the $, but for me, made no sense to keep. I had not realized how big the Sigma was. You're paying for that highly compact lens from Sony, but if keeping the compact aspect is important to you, worth it.
Hi Kyle, thank you so much for explaining everything so elaborately. I'm an amateur photographer and I'm gonna buy a Sony 35mm f1.8 lens for my Sony a6000 soon.
Great comparison, thanks! I just picked up an a6100 and will be getting a Sigma 16mm 1.4 in the mail today. I think I also need that 56mm in my life, just look at that big beatiful piece of glass! When you’re shooting with aps-c I think it makes sense to pick the lenses that lets in the most light, to get as close as possible to FF performance (low-light, bokeh, lower shutter speeds). The fact that the Sigma arguably has better colour reproduction, is sharper AND cheaper makes it ideal for stills, and video if your using a gimbal or tripod.
I wanted the Sigma but the Sony was much cheaper pre-owned here in the UK in 2022 - so I put the savings towards a Sigma 16mm/1.4 - for which Sony doesn't have an equivalent 1st party lens. Sigma's E mount lens are much chunkier and have a VERY loud autofocus system which IMHO is much slower than the Sony. But like you say, the picture quality is amazing.
Very good comparison from a practical point of view. Both lenses are great. I own and have been using the Sigma for the last two years and it never disappointed me. I never felt the need for IS. Have gone down to 1/8 sec handheld and got sharp images. Call it hefty, bigger, or whatever but it is majestic to hold it mounted on my a6000. And just to add; the heft probably makes it reasonably stable at slower shutter speeds.
Really handy review, expecially 3 years on and in the EU we have both lenses at the same price. I still think the Sigma might win out though, plus the slight extra wideness in 30 vs. 35 might be better in relatively tight/cramped indoor shooting conditions (also where low light might be a better bet). Still undecided, lens window shopping is fun!
super video! I choose the sigma. The main reason was the focal length. 30mm is for me the perfect spot.. so I can use it also indoor. But honestly two amazing lenses!
I know im late to the party, but I've just bought an a6500 and took a chance on the Sony 35mm. Love it! It doesnt leave my camera (I only have this and the kit lens). Thanks for the review
I have the Sigma but I would really like to get the Sony. The small size (and yes the OSS) are the appealing points to me. I also have had the Sigma struggle for autofocus in situations that were not that dark.
I think you could definitely not go wrong with the Sigma 30 mm if you're on a budget or just looking to upgrade from the kit lens. But if you try to keep things light and you have the extra cash in the Sony 35mm is probably the direction you'd want to go. Both lenses are very good but keeping in mind your budget would deftly make your decision a whole lot easier. Excellent review my friend and as always thanks for sharing.
Hi! Found this interesting when I stood weighing between the both lenses. I went for the sigma with its better sharpness and higher f-stop value, and also more affordable. A con was the size before buying, but upon recieving the lens, this is not a problem for me. I actually kind of like how it allows for a comfortable grip/stance and the weight feels very balanced with the camera. I also like the build quality as well. Also I almost never shoot film, making the OSS and AF-noise arguments less critical for me. First few days in and I'm so happy with my choice, such beautiful shots and great potential for further improving my library! Thanks for great content in an easy format!
Your ISOs in less than ideal conditions will be way higher than when using either of these primes. For day time shooting, the G f2.8 is hands down the better lens.
Brilliant review of these lenses Kyle! For budget reason and as a beginner hobbyist, just upgraded to Sigma 30mm f1.4 from my kit lens of Sony a6000. Thanks for continuing making videos/reviews relevant to A6000 camera. By the way, what external mic are you using on your A6000? Any recommendations? Thanks!
I use the Zoom XH1. And because it was highly touted as a great mic. (I watched TH-cam reviews lol). I love it. I will one day switch to a ride mic, once I get a camera with a mic port. I have a video on the mic and how I sync my audio!
Had both and I as well prefer sony. While I do have massive respect for Sigma and I as well think that Sigma technically and on paper is a superior lens, but in practice I tend to choose something lighter and easier to carry. It is between should I bother opening my backpack, pulling out the camera and taking a shot or should I take it out of the pocket and take the shot. Funny enough I bought both lenses brand new and sony cost me 299 euro, while sigma cost me 340 euro.
I love your videos so far. They’re really good for learning the tips and tricks of this camera. I just got mine less than a month ago. It was given to me by my dad as my Connon Rebel T6i was stolen. Im loving this one so far and hope to learn more.
I have the Sigma and took it on a long roadtrip. Sad to say I was disappointed by the many missed shots because of the slower auto focus. My other Sony native lenses are way faster to focus!
Was waiting for a video comparison like this from you. Great to see and I really like your style of comparison, where you don't just give a "which is better" style. Your catering to different people by explaining strongly each lens' pros and cons is very helpful.
You convinced me to go with the Sony for my a6400 - it was recently on sale for € 299, so was en par with the Sigma - my very first prime lens ever ... and I don't regret the purchase - man, it's gorgeous! :-) ... thanks for your advise!
Recently subscribed, very new to cameras and I found a Sony A6000 for cheap at a pawn shop! Got it without knowing it had such a huge community and it being a really great camera, I’m watching a lot of your videos to learn more! Now I need a lense, and I need one that is compatible with low light to shoot shows and nightlife. Is there a lot of difference between f1.4 and f1.8? I’m really into the Sigma lense due to the price and aperture, but the Sony lense has OSS and it would really help with my handheld short films haha. Is the aperture difference between these two lenses super noticeable? And if it is, do you think it’s worth investing on the Sony lense for its OSS and sacrifice the wider aperture Sigma offers? If it really isn’t noticeable in the long run, I will invest in the Sony lense
@@south.constellation hey there! Thanks for checking out my videos. There is not a ton of difference between f1.4 and f1.8 at this focal length. The OSS would help a little bit but it’s not worlds different - plus you could use some stabilization in editing software. Id put more emphasis on technique holding the camera over relying on the OSS in this case. Later on if you do more films and get a bit more serious, in camera stabilization will help a lot. For now, I’d shoot scenes a little wider, and take into consideration using stabilization in the editing. Shoot from test shots and see what I mean, bc editing programs will crop in a bit to stabilize / smooth the footage.

Really good review. Have watched so many. This is my fav. Fast - straight to the point and not annoying and in yo face. Thanks for this. I'm on the Sigma. but in doubts as to buy the Sigma art 35mm f1,4 instead of this 30mm lens. what do you think?
Depends on the camera. If you're using an APSC camera, I always suggest APSC lenses first. The Art version is full frame, so some downsides. However if you see yourself upgrading to full frame down the line, and don't mind the crop factor, go ahead and get the art. Thanks for the kind words!
Great video comparing 2 similar lenses. I’m not sure of the value of OSS on short focal length lenses unless you shoot mainly in low light conditions where it could make a difference.
I already have the sony And i’m thinking to also buy the sigma as it’s more versatile for travelling photography. Should i buy it, or do You think it’s not Worth it in This instance? Thank you
There isn’t too much of a difference IMO. It’s slightly wider at 30mm. If you have the extra $$ I’d look into the signs 18-50mm f2.8. I’ve done a review in that and if you want versatility, that’s a great option. Not an f1.4, but worth considering. Also the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 may be an interesting lens to consider - I have a review for that lens as well. 👍🏻
I prefer Sigma 30 f/1.4 for video and photo than Sony is my personal opinion I don't have problem with OSS of Sony I have Sony a6600 . Sony lens are very expensive.
I am on the fence on the sigma lenses. Should I go with the 16mm f1.4 or the 70-300. I'm seriously considering the latter for astro and lower price but the 16mm looks better for all around.
I had the 70-300 for a short time, but I couldn't do a review. Wish I did. I would say personally, I get much more use from the sigma. I also use the sigma whenever you see my astro shots on the gram, and I love it. I do want to test manual lenses for astro, but the sigma 16mm is incredible all around. You could easily get the sigma 16mm, and if you're not happy with it, sell it for no loss, then go with the sony zoom next.
@@kyletaggart that's great to know. Is the focus ring on the 16mm very loud when shooting video? I've heard some complaints about it. BTW I appreciate all your replies and understand if you don't reply. I created one video last year and it has over 20k views. I try to respond to every question but wow! can it be overwhelming!
For what types of photos do you put away the 35mm and attach the kit lens? I just bought the Sony 35mm and struggle if I should keep the kit lens or sell it. I don’t like keeping stuff that i don’t use. Thanks for a great channel! Keep them A6000 videos coming 👍🏻😊
I rarely put in the kit lens now. I love prime lenses, so I tend to use my feet to zoom in or out when I need to. The 35mm is much shaped than the kit lens and it gives me that juicy 1.8 for better depth of field. If you like the kit lens better and the zoom capability by all means sell the 35! You could use that money towards another lens or just something else entirely,
@@kyletaggart I think I wrote my question unclear :) I love the 35mm so that one I will keep! But I'm not sure if I should keep the kit lens or not. That's why I was curious when you would prefer the kit lens over the 35mm :)
@@pe9042 I would keep the kit in case of travel-when compact size is of absolute importance,,, switched to full frame but still keeping a6600 sigma16 & sony20 pancake for vlogging purposes, 20mm pancake=same size as kit
Kinda surprised you chose based on size and stabilization. The 6500 and 6600 have Stabilization built in. Definitely love my sigma trio more than anything but I am biased
Excellent review Kyle. My copy of the sony lens have oss noise that is very noticeable in video in quiet environment. Do you have the same problem. Thank you
I have chosen Sigma over Sony for up gradation from my kit lens. As I do more photos and hardly do videos on my A6400 (Normally use tripod in that case), I hope my decision turns out to be correct. Lens is on way.
@@epochmellifluous9810 This lens could not reach me in time, so I have to cancel the order. However, I went for another sigma 18-50mm later and it is now my day to day lens.
@@epochmellifluous9810 Sharpness is good for most of the purposes, though not as insane as we get in prime lenses. f2.8 is not much of an issue for me. It depends upon use. As I primarily do bird photography, this lens is for travel or day to day photography. If someone wants to use camera primarily for portrait, I would say prime would be better.
I have the sigma 30mm with the a6300 and when using it with a Ronin SC i get jittery footage even after perfectly balancing, auto tuning and calibrating. Could the oss lens solve the issue
Could be focus breathing. Try manual focus for a shot or two and see if you see the same results. Sometimes using auto focus - depending on what’s in the shot - the lens can focus in and out and have trouble focusing. If it’s not that then maybe it is OSS. If you have the kit lens, it has OSS. Try to shoot the same shot with the kit lens and compare results.
Nice review sir..just wanna ask..i got my A6500 with ibis on it..does combination ibis and oss lens makes stabilization even better or just the same with no oss lens?
Interesting video, I am looking at these 2 lenses. but I already own a 56mm Sigma 1.4 lens. If I would shoot for the same video with multiple lenses does it make more sense to stay in the sigma range? or isn't it really noticable after color correction from which lens the shots where made? (Beginner here)
Yes, the colors look different the Sony is more close to cold colors and the sigma it is slightly warmer. You could shoot in log and then put all the same color in post or you could stay in the Sigma ecosystem. So is your call, if you dont like to color correct your footage after filming go for the Sigma, in my opinion the Sony is a better deal. Why?, because sometimes you see your photos and videos slightly out of focus with the Sigma. The AF of the Sony is Right 90% of the time, the Sigma I'll say its about 70%. Also de AF in the Sony is faster. Anyway both of this lenses are great and you could not go wrong with either.
My Sigma cannot focus at f2 with AF-S on an A6000. It works only with AF-C . This problem has been identified by many people and occures only if you use the viewfinder. I know that it sounds strange but it is so.
@@kyletaggart Body V 3.21 lensV 03 I am not the only one with this problem. The issue is only at f2, AF-S , and with EVF! It is consistently unsharp. Using screen is OK . It's crazy!

Amateur photographer here. I am thinking of getting a Sony alpha 6700 and I wanted to ask you if with the E 35mm f 1.8 OSS would be a good fit for night video shooting. I have an iPhone 15 but I want to upgrade with my night footage. Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks in advance
Not a bad combo for night shooting. Mobile vs dedicated camera have different capabilities. More advanced cameras can shoot RAW vs some phones not being able to do so. So cameras you can color grade / edit, and retain more details. But the whole process is reliant on having the skill to do so. An iPhone, can achieve nice video quality, day or night, and it’s relatively user friendly and doesn’t require a ton of skill. So it’s really about what you want to achieve. The 6700 is the latest and great Sony APSC camera, and had great video specs. I’d compare it to what the iPhone 15 can do, and what matters to you. 4K? 6k? RAW/Log shooting, etc.
@@kyletaggart I just want a significant upgrade with the low light video/photos that I get from the iPhone 15 . Plus to consider an upgrade to the a6700 is that with the iPhone I have reflections of green dots and the lines when it’s coming with a sunset or when I am somewhere very dark and there are lights… I have everywhere this problem. I believe with cameras like Sony a6700 that will not be an issue anymore, right ? Thank you so much for answering appreciated.
@@kyletaggart if I will buy the Sony camera and good lenses, it will not give me the quality that I am looking for the low light shooting ? Got the 30mm last christmas, used for £180, for studio portrait, as that isn't the job of the 16mms 1.4. Did you notice the lens good feels loose compared to the 16mm 'a hood.
I have the sigma 16mm and the sony 35/50 f1.8 set. I prefer the sony set because it's smaller. the sigma 16 takes up so much space.....I'm taking more video than photo though.
I’m a new beginner & I want to stream videos on TH-cam & I brought a Sony NEX 7 for $300 & it was like brand new in the box & it came with the kit lens 2 batteries a charger & a hood my question is the Sony 35mm fully compatible for my NEX7?
hikyletaggart glad you like the Sony. After I bought the a6600 I bought the Sigma 30mm because now I have IBIS. With the heavier a6600 and the “big” Sigma lens I felt like I’m almost holding a full frame camera (although full frame users would laugh at that statement). I returned it and am staying with my Sony 35mm. Thanks for helping me with buyers remorse (or lack thereof!). A big reason APSC users use this camera cause of it’s size. If we wanted 100% optical, image quality we would’ve went full frame to begin with! IMO, small form factor with 96% IQ is better than bigger form factor with 100% IQ.
What’s up, Kyle! Great content as always. What are your thoughts concerning the sigma 35mm art vs the sigma 30mm contemporary. Is the double the price worth it?? Cheers.
The sigma 35 art is a full frame lens, much heavier, and pricer and not necessarily designed for the a6k line. It would definitely work, but I’d stick with the APS-C version, the contemporary model. One of these days I’m gonna have to throw on a full frame lens and do a video on it. Also thanks for checking this out!
Nice video! I just bought the sony 35 1.8. Is it normal to hear some constant noise your ear is close to the lens? For my sony 18-135 I don't have this problem.
I choose the sigma for its wider fov cheaper price and slightly wider aperture. Autofocus is similar. The depth of field is quite similar. The Bokeh is almost identical.
Can I consider Sigma 30mm f1.4 as do-it-all lens? I'm on a budget but I need a kind of all around lens that is good specially for filming. Is it good for filming, low light and night filming/photography?
Yes and no, some people prefer to zoom with a zoom lens, rather than moving their feet! 30mm is a fixed focal length, so that’s up to you. It is a versatile focal length though, and f1.4 gives you low light flexibility for sure. I think it’s a great starter lens as maybe your first prime lens (if it is). It’s a great lens for the money no doubt. The Viltrox 33mm is also f1.4, and I think sometimes cheaper. Both are great options for their cost.
Hello Sir, I love streetphotography and planning to buy Sony Alpha 6000, so which lens would be ideal for that purpose ? What about Sigma 18-50mm DC DN lens ?
Hugely helpful. I have a Sony A6600 and the Sigma 56mm lens, which is amazing, but translates roughly to an 85mm and not good for indoor shots. Also, it’s quite big, especially with the hood. The Sony 35mm 1.8 is the perfect size and excellent performance. Thanks for the help!
I ended up with the Viltrox 23mm, to get a ~ 35mm equivalent For a 24mm equivalent, I don't know what to get yet. The Viltrox 16mm is heavy and weird. The Sigma is big and heavy too.
Hi friend, Year later from you review , thank you very much for the video. I just photography object like watchs, which lens you advise me to buy , the sigma or the sony, i use sometimes in the tripod so thats not a problem for me. So what do you say? I buy the 7artimas 35 1.2 menual but im not happy from him, im waiting for ttartim 50mm 1.2f . But im looking for the best for the good photo and sharp photo, i use the a6400 sony.
The sigma may be a tad sharper. (Going off the top of my head here). I primarily use the Sony 35 as a walk around lens, so having the OSS is nice. But you don’t need it with a tripod. Give the sigma a shot.
I like the Sony a7ii body because mine has 5 axes stabilizarion and the Sigma is a beast the 30mm and the 135mm are the best combo. Price quality over the Sony, Zeiss, g master, tamron etc
Hey dude, this lens (35mm sony) was my first ever choice when im looked for my first lens.. but thinks change and now i dont know what to do .. cant choose between this one and the 16-55 f2.8 from sony.. second is more versatile to me.. but price is savage too 😂 i like to take photo of street, food, portrait..
Not much of a diff from the Sony 35 to Sigma 30. And yeah the price is savage for the 16-55. I’d say focus in on a reason why you need another lens, and then find a lens to fill that need!
Are you sure you don't have these pics reversed? The Sigma photos should show more of the frame and the subject smaller, yet they seem to be the other way around. Or is it just me? After looking again, it might just be the first pic.
The a6000 only films in 1080p lol. It’s close, it’s not night and day with these lenses in terms of sharpness. I’d base my decision on purchase for whichever suits your budget better, and if you want OSS or not.
@@kyletaggart Oh sorry, I didn't know you also filmed the video with it xD I already have the Sigma in the mail, but I can't stop watching A6000 related videos 😅

I‘m going back and forth between these two and when you were comparing them I thought I’d pick the sigma but then your conclusion made some points too and now I’m back we’re I was before watching the video 😬. I really don’t need OSS but I do take photos of playing kids so I need a good autofocus and the Sony size is great! BUT...pricing and f1.4 are two great points too... argh! Still so indecisive 🤷🏻♀️😆 Thanks for your insights though. I’ll probably end up ordering both and sending one back (or not LOL)
I enjoy your face detection video; it illustrates how brighter the Sigma 1.4 is compared to the Sony 1.8. WOW!! But compactness is important as I travel a lot & has a SmallRig cage around the camera for bumps & scrapes...I guess I've to swallow the extra ~$100 in cost. OSS isn't that important due to my a6500 🖖😎
One more reason why I personally prefer Sigma over Sony is f stop number. f1.8 is great on full-frame cameras, this f1.8 thing is a little gimmicky, it's just a f2 lens in reality, Sigma on the other hand is full stop brighter at f1.4, meaning that this lens is going to produce a better quality image in the end.
Why wouldn't you also include grams in the weight description. I literally had to pause & check the weights on web. Ounces & lbs?! 🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for the vid.
Great videos, very informative. I have a sony a6000 myself and am looking for a new lens. I was looking for one of these two lenses, glad I found this vid:) For car photos, which one do you recommend or do you know another lens? Prices here are similar, sigma €350 vs sony €375. Cool soundtrack btw for the photo comparison! Thankyou for the videos.
Both would be great for car photos, but it also depends on how close you want to be. The Sigma 16mm f1.4 is also a very good lens for car photos as it's a lot wider, and you can take closer images with a wider look. I'd say either the Sony 35mm f1.8 or the Sigma 16mm f1.4. Make sure to check used on Amazon as well. The sony is $100 cheaper used right now -> geni.us/Sony35mmUsed
lets be real here i like to think the sonys are for the majority photographers theyre always easier to get way cheaper like new used or open box on amazon and the sigmas are more super photographers with more gimbles and that and making lots of money with their equipment will say face detection on both okay but the sigma idk if was .1 percent more jumpy?
Fast forward a few years and the Sony SEL35F18 f1.8 is currently £305, Sigma 33B965 30mm f1.4 is £309. Do I go with the (slightly) sharper and brighter Sigma or Sony for it's lighter weight, size and OSS?
Depends, on my case the OSS is such a big Thing for me because my camera doesn't have in body OSS. So sony is the best option for me The better sharpness wouldn't matter if you have blurry pictures, right?
I just got a Sony A6400 I am torn ok what lens to get. I intend to use the camera for making TH-cam videos. ASMR videos go be precise. So I will just be sitting in from of the caméra. I need a good lens please any suggestions I will totally appreciate it

My man!
Very cool lens.
the 18-105 is one of the best lenses i've ever used, amazing thing
I have the 18-105mm. Would you recommend also getting the 35mm or 30mm sigma?
@footballboyz15 for specific uses yes. If you wanna walk around with less weight, smaller lens.
I think I’m going with Sony’s 35mm. Ordering it now and I’ll see how good it is, thanks!
and how does it?
hi How is your experience with the Sony 35mm?
Shopping these two right now and just looked to see if you had posted yet. Literally two minutes before! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
Haha nice! I hope you dig it.
It's obvious... F1.4 vs F1.8 ... This has been happening since the old days of phtogr5.
Hi Kyle, thank you so much for explaining everything so elaborately. I'm an amateur photographer and I'm gonna buy a Sony 35mm f1.8 lens for my Sony a6000 soon.
Have you bought it? If yes, please review it for me, i have a sony a6000+kit too and i've bought sel 35mmf1.8 🙏
Sigma is better
IMO I owned both but always felt the Sony was soft wide open and the photos came out cool. I like the warmth of the sigma. I since sold my Sony.
Nice! Thanks so much for watching.
The 56mm is actually quite small! The signs trip really are fantastic. Let me know how you dig the 16mm!
Good points Raj!
@@kyletaggart Thanks and VGM to you.
I am more into photos then videos. Will it be a good buy ?
@@tushardani Absolutely.
Definitely, and can’t go wrong with the sigma. Been loving it!
Thanks so so much for checking this out preppier! And very well said. Sigma just makes such quality glass and puts a nice lower price tag. Love it!
@@kyletaggart 👍
I have sigma 30mm f1.4 great lens i. Lowlight super cinematic
Sigma is my choise
Low light
And budget ♥️
Loving your work! really helping me out deciding between all these lenses for the APSC sensor size.
Hey thanks! I appreciate that!
I have the Sony 35 on my a5100. It fits right in my winter jacket pocket. Awesome little setup you can take everywhere..
God I love that!
Thanks for great content in an easy format!
happy to help! thanks :)
Once Sony...
Always Sony
I'm sticking with the 16-55 F2.8😅
Very expensive man
sony or sigma this?
Your ISOs in less than ideal conditions will be way higher than when using either of these primes. For day time shooting, the G f2.8 is hands down the better lens.
Sony f18 35mm + A6000 very happy and love it 🥰
I have zv-e10 I think sigma is right for me because zv-e10 have active stability built in camera
Im loving this one so far and hope to learn more.
thanks so much for your support Lauryn! glad you like the tips n tricks videos!!
Thanks Jonathan! Glad you dig the style.
You convinced me to go with the Sony for my a6400 - it was recently on sale for € 299, so was en par with the Sigma - my very first prime lens ever ... and I don't regret the purchase - man, it's gorgeous! :-) ... thanks for your advise!
that sick! happy to hear it.
@@kyletaggart thank you for replying! I was definitely thinking of stabilizing in post production, but I didn’t know it was a valid enough answer to my problems. Thanks for bringing it up! I’m just a worried broke human trying to invest in the right equipment for now 😅 so I appreciate you for helping me out! Keep being awesome!
this video was extremely helpful! i got my a6000 back in november and been doing some searching for a lens before i invested in one and this helped me make a decision between the two. all your videos on the a6000 have really inspired me to get creative now that i have a better sense of using the different modes etc. thanks a bunch! looking forward to more videos on your channel :-) currently saving up for that sony 35mm !!!!!!
Nice!!! Thanks so much for your kind words!
Hi, Will this be a good fit for Sony 6400 camera? Will it improve a little quality of the pictures versus the sigma 30?
Absolutely, either lens will. 🙌🏻
I have the Sony 35mm f1.8, I am curious if it's good enough for taking pictures of the aurora borealis?
I think so! It may not be a very wide view of the sky, but you can still capture it.
@@kyletaggart thanks!! It is for the A7ii :)
Great video comparing 2 similar lenses.
I’m not sure of the value of OSS on short focal length lenses unless you shoot mainly in low light conditions where it could make a difference.
I mainly just take up close shots not big on videos so I'm thinking the sigma might be the better option kyle 🤔..thoughts ?
Can’t go wrong here really. Sigma would be just fine for photo only
Great video Kyle. Love my Sony 35mm f1.8 OSS on my a6100
I already have the sony And i’m thinking to also buy the sigma as it’s more versatile for travelling photography.
I only have the a6000. But yeah I prefer smaller and lighter. The sigma 30 is really food though.

Excellent review Kyle. My copy of the sony lens have oss noise that is very noticeable in video in quiet environment. Do you have the same problem.
Thank you
Thanks for checking this out. I do not!
I have chosen Sigma over Sony for up gradation from my kit lens. As I do more photos and hardly do videos on my A6400 (Normally use tripod in that case), I hope my decision turns out to be correct. Lens is on way.
Experience kaise raha Sigma ke saath I am thinking the same.
@@epochmellifluous9810 This lens could not reach me in time, so I have to cancel the order. However, I went for another sigma 18-50mm later and it is now my day to day lens.
@@pankajvermacs Okay, but does it hinder your low light performance due to f2.8 also is Sharpness good as it is zoom lens ?
@@epochmellifluous9810 Sharpness is good for most of the purposes, though not as insane as we get in prime lenses. f2.8 is not much of an issue for me. It depends upon use. As I primarily do bird photography, this lens is for travel or day to day photography. If someone wants to use camera primarily for portrait, I would say prime would be better.
@@pankajvermacs thankyou for your help.
Same here bro I have 6400 and moza air sigma footage is not well stablised compared to kit lens 😶
interesting,,,, so seems that ibis or OSS is highly recommended for gimbal work? :(
Nice review sir..just wanna ask..i got my A6500 with ibis on it..does combination ibis and oss lens makes stabilization even better or just the same with no oss lens?
It does, actually.
Even with the most updated firmware? Also I was at f1.4 when I had an issue.
@@kyletaggart Body V 3.21 lensV 03 I am not the only one with this problem.
The issue is only at f2, AF-S , and with EVF! It is consistently unsharp.
Using screen is OK . It's crazy!
You and Arthur both chose the sony 35mm! Now I'm searching for a video comparison which chose the sigma 30mm which I have 😂. Confirmation bias haha. Great review anyway!
Arthur now choose sigma after firmware update.
Thank you so much for answering
appreciated.
@@kyletaggart if I will buy the Sony camera and good lenses, it will not give me the quality that I am looking for the low light shooting ? I mean of course I have to learn to use correct the camera but you are telling me that those really nice pictures and videos during the night are also a result of editing and colour grading ?
Got the 30mm last christmas, used for £180, for studio portrait, as that isn't the job of the 16mms 1.4. Did you notice the lens good feels loose compared to the 16mm 'a hood.
Haven’t been using it with the good all that much. Doesn’t feel loose though
I have the sigma 16mm and the sony 35/50 f1.8 set. I prefer the sony set because it's smaller. the sigma 16 takes up so much space.....I'm taking more video than photo though.
Great information! One question, What camera did You use to make the video?
A6000. 😬
I’m a new beginner & I want to stream videos on TH-cam & I brought a Sony NEX 7 for $300 & it was like brand new in the box & it came with the kit lens 2 batteries a charger & a hood my question is the Sony 35mm fully compatible for my NEX7?
@@HowYouMove yep! Any Sony E mount APSC lens is compatible with the NEX 7. 👍🏻
Would you prefer the sony 35mm for baby and family photos Or sigma 30mm?
Sony, the stabilization will help with movement in lowlight.
On a tripod and live streaming, which one is the best?
both would work for that, I'd probably go with 30mm if it's a tighter space.
Another great video. If you had the a6600 (w/IBIS) would you choose the Sigma or Sony?
The 6600 feels huge in hand. So I’d say I’d stay with the Sony 35mm f1.8. I had the 6600 for two weeks to test and the grip/battery weight felt huge!
hikyletaggart glad you like the Sony.
I wouldn’t say normal, but it’s most likely just the focusing. As long as it’s not crazy loud or you hear grinding it’s probably just normal.
I choose the sigma for its wider fov cheaper price and slightly wider aperture. Autofocus is similar. The depth of field is quite similar. The Bokeh is almost identical.
Great Video Kyle Zoolander :) I would be on the Sigma 30mm lens side of the fence myself.
Zoolander?! Lol
How come sony’s 35mm looks wider than sigma 30mm in your test shots?
I run into people with crop sensor cameras, who pay no attention to crop sensor equivalents.
Might be worth a video?
Hugely helpful. I have a Sony A6600 and the Sigma 56mm lens, which is amazing, but translates roughly to an 85mm and not good for indoor shots. Also, it’s quite big, especially with the hood. The Sony 35mm 1.8 is the perfect size and excellent performance. Thanks for the help!
No problemo!
I ended up with the Viltrox 23mm, to get a ~ 35mm equivalent
For a 24mm equivalent, I don't know what to get yet. The Viltrox 16mm is heavy and weird.
The Sigma is big and heavy too.
Hi friend,
Year later from you review , thank you very much for the video.
I just photography object like watchs, which lens you advise me to buy , the sigma or the sony, i use sometimes in the tripod so thats not a problem for me.
So what do you say?

But im looking for the best for the good photo and sharp photo, i use the a6400 sony.
The sigma may be a tad sharper. (Going off the top of my head here). I primarily use the Sony 35 as a walk around lens, so having the OSS is nice. But you don’t need it with a tripod. Give the sigma a shot.
@@kyletaggart wow thank you very much for the fast replay im going to buy in .
I like the Sony a7ii body because mine has 5 axes stabilizarion and the Sigma is a beast the 30mm and the 135mm are the best combo. Price quality over the Sony, Zeiss, g master, tamron etc
I bought a used sigma 30mm 1.4. Haven’t gotten it yet but hope it treats me well.
Hope you enjoy! Nice little lens
A year later, sigma released 18-50 lens.. absolute game changer.
The autofocus of the Sony is very impressive
Are you sure you don't have these pics reversed? The Sigma photos should show more of the frame and the subject smaller, yet they seem to be the other way around. Or is it just me? After looking again, it might just be the first pic.
Nope, I triple checked. Remember though I’m not on a tripod. I do 99% hand held.
Yet another comment ;) Congratulations, finally a real life comparison!!! Just subscribed to your channel, love your approach!
Thanks David!! 🤘🏻
Informative video! Do you notice a hum noise on Sony 35mmm lens when shutter pressed half way to get focus?
It's kind of difficult spotting minute sharpness differences between the two photos in only a 1080p video ;-;
I have a mirrorless full frame camera. Because the Sigma is an APSC lens, will the focal length remain 30mm if I mount it on my full frame camera? Thanks!
The field of view will be the full frame equivalent of 45mm.
BUT...pricing and f1.4 are two great points too... argh! Still so indecisive 🤷🏻♀️😆
Thanks for your insights though. I’ll probably end up ordering both and sending one back (or not LOL)
haha if you can order both and do that that's a good option!
I have owned both for about 2 months now, still can't figure out which to keep :(
Now, in Indonesia, Sony 35mm f1.8 is cheaper than Sigma 30mm f1.8.. What do you think? What you preference?
Sigma is a tad sharper. Sony has OSS. Up to you!
@@kyletaggart Ok I think I will go with Sigma.. Thanks Kyle
I know you're not a technical guy but please consider using metric weight alongside your lbs and ounces.
I’ll take out lbs and just do grams and ounces from now on. 😊
@@kyletaggart thanks that imperial stuff is confusing AF for people who didn't grow up with it.
was just thinking of that recently,,,,wonder if its best to use both or just metric?
They’re both APSC lenses. Unsure why you’re saying one has a different f stop and the other doesn’t?
Why wouldn't you also include grams in the weight description. I literally had to pause & check the weights on web.
Ounces & lbs?! 🤦🏻♂️
Thanks for the vid.
Think I have in other videos. I’m in the US. Just my first nature to use ounces and lbs. 👍🏻
The sony is $100 cheaper used right now -> geni.us/Sony35mmUsed
which is better for photography ?
so you mean to say that I really should buy sigma 30mm 1.4 as my first lens?
I think it’s a great first prime lens.
@@kyletaggart what’s better under $1,000?
lets be real here i like to think the sonys are for the majority photographers theyre always easier to get way cheaper like new used or open box on amazon and the sigmas are more super photographers with more gimbles and that and making lots of money with their equipment
will say face detection on both okay but the sigma idk if was .1 percent more jumpy?
Fast forward a few years and the Sony SEL35F18 f1.8 is currently £305, Sigma 33B965 30mm f1.4 is £309. Do I go with the (slightly) sharper and brighter Sigma or Sony for it's lighter weight, size and OSS?
Depends, on my case the OSS is such a big Thing for me because my camera doesn't have in body OSS. So sony is the best option for me
The better sharpness wouldn't matter if you have blurry pictures, right?
aye u showcase ur personality well, subscribed for that and may steal that if i ever make content. Love the autofocus bit hahaha
Thanks so much!
I just got a Sony A6400 I am torn ok what lens to get. I intend to use the camera for making TH-cam videos. ASMR videos go be precise. So I will just be sitting in from of the caméra. I need a good lens please any suggestions I will totally appreciate it
If you’re using an external mic the sigma 16mm f1.4 is great for TH-cam.
hikyletaggart thank you soo much for taking the time to respond
