I switched 1.4 to 1.8 about three weeks ago. I was so scared when I started this video but in the end I almost cried for your conclusion. Thanks, you made me a happy sunday. 😅👍

I went from the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 to the Sony f1.8 and I don't regret it at all. The size and weight completely justifies getting the Sony over the Sigma for me. The slightly wider aperture and tiny bit better corner sharpness just isn't worth having to carry that extra size and weight around.

Gerald, check the philipreeve review, the 1.2 produces much better bokeh than the 1.4 despite only 1/3 stop difference. You buy the 1.2 for the magic bokeh. Not only is there more blur, but quality is better. Way too much time spent on sharpness, not enough at typical shooting distance. Instead, bokeh was an afterthought.
The 1.8 should be first choice if only one lens.

Great video! I unfortunately can't lose the 2/3 stops to go to the 35mm f1.8 from my Sigma 35mm f1.4, because I do a fair amount of extreme low light work. But the Sony seems like a great piece of kit, especially for the weather sealing and lighter weight.

  • @Nunez87
    @Nunez87 4 ปีที่แล้ว

The more reviews I view on the 35mm 1.8, the more point in the direction, that it is the go to lens. I'm definitely getting this myself.
One thing I have to notice with this video, is that Aperture, is the perceived size of the Aperture when viewed from the front. It is NOT a way to measure or compare light. We can argue that it has theoretical stops that make it supposedly faster, but Aperture values aren't T values and they shouldn't be mixed.
Several low budget lenses at 1.8 have better light transmission than 1.4 lenses due to have less amounts of glass blocking light.

The Sigma lenses generally manage a worse T-stop than the F-stop. Probably has to do with the long lens barrels with loads of lens elements that they use to get their impressive sharpness.

Gerald, as usual your videos are epic. From someone that has tried just about every 35mm focal lens available, I have to tell you that the best ever made is the new Tamrom 35mm f1.4.. as in, optical perfection, period. Unfortunately, its not available for e-mount and using it on my a7RIII with a Metabones EF adapter, drastically downgrades autofocus performance compared to anything native.. but thats the way it goes. If you have the opportunity to try it, you'll be enlightened. Thanks for the video and insight as always.
PS - ..and I fully agree with you on the Sony/Zeiss 35mm f1.4 being tragic. I had one and was positively T H E worse 35mm lens I ever got my hands on, from any brand, at any price.. simply unusable at any f-stop. And I never touched Zeiss glass again nor have any intent to change mind :)

I'm a big fan of Sigma lenses, though since I've bought the Sony 85mm 1.8 lens I feel like I should buy lighter lenses like that one and maybe sell my Sigma lenses. I have the Sigma 20mm 1.4 which I'm selling, the 35mm 1.4 and 50mm 1.4 which I might sell as well.

Good review Gerald. Id have to respectfully disagree with some of it though. The bokeh 'quality' is significantly better with the 1.2 even if they were shot at the same aperture. Im not just talking a 100% view of a specular highlights but actual out of focus areas in an image.
Ive owned or used them all thoroughly myself in real word shooting. The Sony 1.8 has some significant flaws and doesn't really have that magic look to it. Its functional as a 35mm and mostly very sharp but lacks something. I love the size and use though.
The 1.4 has some rather 'jaggy' bokeh on many subjects but is plenty sharp even wide open.
The only negative with the 1.2 is its size. It produced easily the nicest images and ones with a real magical quality especially when printed rather then pixel peeped. Maybe you can tell how much I love that lens! (1.2) Mine is dagger sharp across the frame from wide open. I just love it :-)

Great video! I had the Sigma 35 1.4 and sold it, weight and size was a bit too much for me. Those 665g for the Sigma 1.4 correspond to the canon version. The Sony version weights 740g (no caps or hood).

This shows how good the Sony 35 1.8 is for the size and price. It's funny how Sony lenses are kinda underrated.
And Sigma did shoot itself in the foot when they decided not to make a clear distinction between lenses designed from the ground up for mirrorless mounts and the ones that were simply adapted from old DSLR designs.

HI, I see you have the 40mm art, Can you make a comparison between 35mm 1.2 and the 40mm 1.4 please??
I think a lot of persons can be interested in what to chose because all reviews say the 35 1.2 is more like a 36 or 37mm lens

Thanks for the review of the different lens. Not being a Pro with no intention of going that route, my main goal was to look for an over all lens that I could jst leave on my Sony a7 iii for the most part to handle my day to day photography needs, so I think I'm gona order the Sigma 1.4 lens especially after you commented on the new firmware update which was one of the negative comments I read & was concerned abt.

can you do "I'm Gerald Undone and you guys don't know it, but I film these videos without wearing pants". Yeah, 35MM is 100% my favorite focal length. I've been using the Tamron 28-75 @ 2.8 and just setting it to 35mm. But I've been seriously considering getting a 35mm prime. Maybe since I'm on a tripod usually the 35mm 1.4 Sigma is best. Usually any time I'm playing around on the gimbal I'm trying to get as wide as possible. I don't think I'd need the 35mm 1.8, for gimbal use at all.

I've got the Sigma 35mm f1.2 for L MOUNT (Panasonic S1) and I can confirm that the AF motors are equally noisy/busy, even in photo mode when selecting "Quick AF" in the menus (since this feature seems to always hunt for subjects, it's no surprise the motors are always active). The only lenses are are super quiet and fast with AF on the S cameras are the S PRO line, which have those linear focus drive motors and are blazing fast. Here's to hoping SIGMA releases some sort of firmware update for the 1.2 for L MOUNT, as it's an otherwise solid lens with gorgeous image quality. I just wish the AF were more reliable (I know part of this is the Lumix series' fault too, of course).
