I do not think or I fact I know you could not explain that any better than you did. Kudos to you for putting the time and thought into it. Certainly helped me.
The coaching tip to push your bicep into your chest really helped me tremendously create some lag and get in good position. I’ve never heard anyone mention that tip . It really worked and gave me a feel have not felt in my swing transition before Thanks a lot !
Jonathan, I've watched hundreds of videos from various instructors and this is probably the best description of the swing sequence I've seen. This video and a previous one really helped me understand "swinging from the ground up." Not sure I can actually do it :) but its a great description.
Thank you JKM. This is the clearest explanation of proper rotation though the downswing I’ve ever encountered through online or in person instruction. Excited to use your suggested drill to really ingrain the correct sequence.
Pressure-turn-arms. One thing that might be obvious but is not explicitly said, is that that rotation is actually done with your feet and the pressure you built. It is not roatating with your hip, but with your feet really pushing the ground. Understanding this really started to change how I move.
I feel sorry for anyone that plays golf and isn't subscribed to this channel. Jonathan is the one instructor on TH-cam that is putting out correct swing information video after video. But what do I know I'm just a washed up D1 golfer that played @ Clemson University and now a club pro reliving his glory days lol😂😂. At least I still have my sponsors 😂😂😂.
Your videos are very helpful. I find it very useful to remember what Hogan said about the downswing: just move the hips and the shoulders and arms will follow. I also like the way that you explained the left bicep and pect connection in the downswing. Thanks!
Great explanation. For myself I wait to start downswing that my backswing is complete and from there moving as a block creating NO separation. I’m also lacking wrist action on top of this “move” explaining my lack of distance especially with driver. The added feeling of the bicep on the peck is a nice feeling to "kind of" insure this is happening. This is a must for me to achieve in the off season. Thanks!
Agree completely with your technique here. For me, this is how I am able to generate whip starting at the top of the backswing....with loose hands. As I start to move in the opposite direction, it allows the club to start the whipping motion into the downswing. My challenge is to keep arms and hands loose.....and it really helps with long clubs.....generating the power and contact needed to get real distance.
AWESOME Drill JKM! I'm a 10 handicap and I've struggled with sequencing the hip rotation my whole golf career. I have a bad habit of sliding the hips laterally and no matter what I try it keeps coming back. This drill has helped the most out of any I have ever tried. It's got me striping the ball consistently and it's only a matter of time before I'm in the low single digits. Big Thank You to you!!!
Enfin !!!
Great stuff! At 9:47 in your video, it seems that your hips stall, and your trail heel has barely raised, the trail leg getting straighter to start a powerful release by the look of your right hand and arm rolling over your left arm. Again bravo! 👏
I’m yet to master the sequence of timing with this key move in the golf swing. I start this at the end of my backswing, but will try your drill to see if it helps! This year I got back into golf after a few years away from the game. (Crazy I know!) I’m addicted like never before, and apart from one lesson with a pro, I have re tweaked my swing by watching TH-cam instructors like yourself. And you are one of the better ones to follow imo. Long story short, my biggest gains have been by sound advice about getting my weight forward and clearing the hips on top of staying straight and not laterally moving in the backswing, have all improved my game immensely. I now get sweet compression on my irons! And one bit of advice you gave once has always stuck with me, and that is at your completion of your golf swing, you should be able to lift your right leg ( for right hander) and be able to balance on your lead leg! I often do this at the range😆. Anyhow thanks for your continued advice and helping us amateurs get better at golf.
Also, the infamous “STEP Drill” … that helps with this sequencing too, right? That is where you step forward slightly just before reaching the top of the backswing … emphasizes the “feel” of pressure into the left leg, AND initiates the downswing rotation. When you said you’ll share a drill, I thought for sure this was it 😉 More good stuff, as always, Jonathan 👍🏻 Keep up the good work.
Great tip! I was trying to straighten my back leg which kept me from getting on my front leg early enough, completely messed up my swing! Pressure, load, rotate and swing.
The last point is so key ie letting the chest rotate into the arm. Most people try to stop the chest to create separation rather than the arms. Doing these loads the muscles as late as possible so that they release closer to impact.
Great interpretation of the transition. If I could master this split second move I’d be 4-5 shots better, IMO. Been around scratch for 30 years, I still get impatient starting the downswing.
For me, I like to feel a slight sway forward (overloading my left need too) until I'm in the slot (arm parallel to ground) at slot position, I pop my left hip hard or as fast as possible. I feel like if I do pop my left hip prior to reaching the slot position then I spin out of my swing. So I'm right there with JKM 100%. Great video on this motion.
Great video and explanation. After watching many videos and how to's I understand what needs to sequence, but performing it properly is still impossible. I hope your drill helps. I will let you know if it works. Thanks.
Great video. You do a great job of explaining concepts, in ways that are very digestible and easy to understand. I really appreciate that you talk about feels and subtle nuances and you seem to seek to leave nothing for misinterpretation. My one question is: amidst the focus of getting separation between lower body and upper body, what would be an ideal feel for the head? Is the head a stable fulcrum or pivot point that only moves or moves forward following the release?
The head will definitely move more forward after release. As your body continues to rotate your head will move forward. You don’t want to keep the head totally behind the ball into the finish
another good video from JKM....there is not enough time in 12 min. to discuss all the details how important this is to pullers who only partially rotate, and right hand throwers who don't rotate at all. I have been recently hitting the ball without spin just using my hips as the engine (I confirmed this at the LPGA tournament in California talking to some Korean players)
There's a lot of mention of shifting weight to the front foot, but how is that physically accomplished? Lift your left foot? Push off towards the target with your right foot?
This really clicked for me when I stopped thinking about it and just swung the club freely without hitting a ball. And the harder you swing, the more you will see your hips naturally firing/turning and that is the feeling you take to your swing.
Great lesson! Big fan and love the content. Question about "pressure - turn - arms" - is the arms part very active? Or passive and you're just letting it pass through?
Excellent vid. From the slow motion of the videos I have a feeling that the rotation of the hip pauses at the moment of impact, does it really happen? Thanks
J, I tried your drill and on the downswing I tend to come over the top. Can you make a video how to incorporate swallowing the club with pressure turn hands?
I have long respected you as a very good golf teacher. I can't help feeling anxious about any kind of dipping or as you put it "pressure" building in the left leg on the beginning of the downswing. My personal concern with this advice from you as well from others is how to return the clubhead to the correct height at impact, fearing thin and fat shots.
This is Erv, Irene's husband. I have double hip arthritis and cannot rotate my hips more than just a few degrees. I have swings that hit the ball very straight but I hit behind the ball 25% of the time because I cannot shift my weight well. I have tried pre-weight-shift swings such as having my knees well-forward at address while trying to have my upper body well-back at address, but this shortens my swing tremendously. I like your mini-swing idea and will try that. I am 69 years old and besides maybe trying over 300 swings in my life, I have gone through a hundred teachers thoughts and you are the best teacher I have ever seen! I wonder if you have any ideas of how a person with limited hip mobility should swing?
Hi! You can change things in the way you set up to the ball to help give you some extra mobility in the hips. Flare out your feet, set up with a more open stance and change your knee flex more
That sequencing is the toughest thing to learn for sure. I know I do that squat move too late because I don't do it until I get to the end of my backswing where I pause slightly. It seems so natural to do it that way. I have been consciously trying to do it before I get to that pause but its freaking hard to do. That drill is great because you sort of do the pause at Position 6 & then do the squat move as you bring the club up. Should one also stop quick as in the swing hard-stop quick drill? This seems to be similar, or does that matter.
Is it possible to have your sequence as reaching 100% of your backswing, then maintaining that position while applying pressure on your lead leg, followed by hips then arms?
I literally had this exact question in my head when I was browsing youtube..as in, what is the order of operations for the downswing..like exactly. These algos are creepy man.
Hey man, can I just say I'm so glad you stopped blurring out the logos on your clothes / gear. It was so annoying seeing a big blurry rectangle in the middle of the screen on your previous videos - especially when you were trying to show something that relates to the chest / shoulder area. On another note: great video - appreciate the video.
Good explanation but you all be careful about getting your lead arm pinned across your chest in the rotation. It may not show up in your iron swing but with a longer driver it can cause your club to push out of plane and make your swing too steep.
How do you stop your head from shifting towards the target as well when you are pressure shifting? My tendency is for the upper body to over-shift too much.
I can't get enough of this mans teaching. A real talent for clarifying the sequence of the swing.
This man is Shohei Ohtani, but golf
I do not think or I fact I know you could not explain that any better than you did. Kudos to you for putting the time and thought into it. Certainly helped me.

This video is gold. Exactly what I have been looking for regarding hip rotation. You sir explain it in a really easy and clear way!
I love how you explain th movement. You explain well and you are very clear. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Thank you JKM. This is the clearest explanation of proper rotation though the downswing I’ve ever encountered through online or in person instruction. Excited to use your suggested drill to really ingrain the correct sequence.
Thanks for this 👍
Ive needed this explanation for a couple years now. I’ll spend the offseason on this

What an outstanding video again. Plus this drill is great - I used this last time I fixed this problem (that I have again!).
Great drill. Ball contact when done right is outstanding. I’m still working on it to become second nature
Your videos are very helpful. I find it very useful to remember what Hogan said about the downswing: just move the hips and the shoulders and arms will follow. I also like the way that you explained the left bicep and pect connection in the downswing.

You really do a fantastic job explaining these subtle but important golf techniques!

It is so important to know what to do and then sync it all up. TY for the work you do.

JKM, I've been searching for a solid explanation of the down swing! Ty, it was my missing piece...
Thanks for the in depth instruction of the body turn. As a senior golfer I just hope I can have the flexibility to mimic your body rotation

Great lesson. Thank you so much.
Great video!!!

Head dipping during start of downswing is totally fine
Great video - as always!
Could you do a video on the arc of the swing after impact? How Low is it supposed to be? Does it go under you left shoulder?
Thank you Jonathan!!!
Thank you very well explained and a great drill. Have you moved studios? 12:06 12:06
Yea for a while I had to ask permission to use certain places for a certain period of time.
🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 all I can say! God bless you
Very good video and very good sound
I really like your videos. How much tension is in your arms, wrist and grip as you are bringing your arm down after the back swing?
Very clear explanation. Thank you Jonathan. I am a beginner, i would like to ask if all swing should have hip rotation?
Yes all swings have hip rotation
This is Erv, Irene's husband. I have double hip arthritis and cannot rotate my hips more than just a few degrees. Yes you can definitely combine these two drills
To add your left arm is pinned into left chest then it releases like a sling shot as u rotate from left side.
Amazing video! I need to try this. Would this feel also work with driver?
Yes 👍
Hi a question! If you do everything right, does it feel like the power came from your hips and not the arms?
Does this apply to driver as well? Great video and explanation
Yeap!
In the drill with half swings, are trying to hit the ball as hard as you can or as fast as you can?
Is it OK to move into your lead side earlier like at 50% of your Takeaway?
Does the pressure shift down onto the left side begin from the right hip? right glute?
what is causing that pressure shift down?
Is it possible to have your sequence as reaching 100% of your backswing, then maintaining that position while applying pressure on your lead leg, followed by hips then arms?
Should always start just before you complete the backswing
when you start the hips, does that feel like a light squat?
I literally had this exact question in my head when I was browsing youtube..as in, what is the order of operations for the downswing..like exactly. These algos are creepy man.
Haha just making videos on common topics from my students
Hey man, can I just say I'm so glad you stopped blurring out the logos on your clothes / gear. It was so annoying seeing a big blurry rectangle in the middle of the screen on your previous videos - especially when you were trying to show something that relates to the chest / shoulder area.

Very nice gofl swing...
How are you moving to lead side. What body part or what feeling are you having to move to left
for me personally I feel like my back pushes into the target during my downswing
@@JKMGolf also how are you moving that pressure? What are you feeling on that part? When you say pressure and down are you pushing front foot!
When the club parallel to the ground, the knee is not close to the target ?I thought their club parallel and hip a bit close to the target line
Thank you!!
Good explanation but you all be careful about getting your lead arm pinned across your chest in the rotation. It may not show up in your iron swing but with a longer driver it can cause your club to push out of plane and make your swing too steep.
Do you give video private lessons?
How do you stop your head from shifting towards the target as well when you are pressure shifting? My tendency is for the upper body to over-shift too much.
Hips needs to lead slightly ahead of the chest
Ringing out the towel
That is the missing part of my swing. A lot more distance
You completely shift to the left before you post up.
I would just point out your hips move 'correctly' as a result if your femur ! Overuse of words hip rotation is confused with hip swivelling.
he is the best coach!
